April Quarterly Meeting The membership of the Green Building Council of Greater Columbia met on Thursday, April 22 for a Quarterly Meeting. Our guest for the Earth Day evening was Leroy Strickland who spent the past 20 years developing a new construction technique using insulated panels normally found in commercial freezers. Leroy brought a demo home to Seawell’s for the meeting and gave a presentation on the technical specifications of homes built with this material.

May After Hours at Hampton Forest The Green Building Council of Greater Columbia held an After Hours event at the Hampton Forest neighborhood in Columbia on Thursday, May 20. Although attendance for the event was light, those that came had a great time. We met at the community pool and theater and enjoyed drinks and food. We then took a tour of the latest phase of green homes being built in the neighborhood. Representatives from builder Inspired Communities were at the event to tell us about the construction of the homes and development of the property. We also presented them with their latest green home certifications in the Build Green Greater Columbia program. Inspired Communities now has 28 certified homes in the program, making up more than 65% of the homes in the program.
Mungo Construction Wins National Green Building Award The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) has honored Mungo Construction for the 2010 Green Project of the Year for Rosewood Hills in Columbia, S.C. “This community is a great example of green building done right while also done affordably,” said Eric Borsting, chair of the NAHB Green Building Subcommittee. “This should be an example for other builders to look to when constructing energy-efficient and earth-friendly housing in their own communities.” A Mungo Construction designed and built neighborhood, Rosewood Hills is a partnership with the Housing Authority of Columbia and consists of LEED for Home certified affordable for-sale and rental units. The project is an example of the Mungo Construction philosophy of “Do What Makes Sense” that employs the basic principles of “building green” -- identifying the needs and desires of their customers, leading to a customized plan to achieve the goals identified, and supporting the construction of safer, more sustainable and more durable homes, taking into consideration both cost of construction and cycle time of new homes.
12 www.columbiabuilders.com
Of the award, Mungo Construction Division President Thom Chumney -- Certified Green Professional and a LEED® AP Homes – said, “This award is a culmination of hard work by our staff and a great partnership with the Columbia Housing Authority. We are committed to help raising the awareness of the affordability and the practicality of incorporating more durable and sustainable procedures into the construction of all homes.”
Rosewood Hills and its builders, Mungo Construction, LLC, were honored at the 12th Annual NAHB National Green Building Conference in Raleigh, N.C. On hand to accept the award for Mungo Construction were Thom Chumney and Steven Mungo.

Fourteen students from SC, GA and NC attended the classes which were held at the SC Realtors Conference Center in Columbia. The classes were taught by Hal Von Nessen of RESH Marketing.

G rand S l am Membership Drive The HBA ran the Grand Slam Membership Drive in May and brought in 71 new HBA Members as well as some new council members, too. This drive was done in conjunction with an HBA of SC Membership Drive and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Membership Day.
Congratulations to the HBA of Hilton Head for bringing in 127 new members, the most new members brought in by any local HBA in the country during the drive!! Our HBA came in third in the national competition and South Carolina on the whole came in third in the nation. The local drive consisted of five teams of members competing for the most new members in a given period of time. Bringing in 31 new members, Peaches won the team contest. The member with the most new members sponsored in the drive is Allyson Way Hank of Sovereign Homes. Congratulations to everyone who participated and making a very successful drive! Special thanks to Co-Chairs Judi McLeod and Kim O’Quinn and their Membership Committee for working very hard for the past 3 months to make this event a success.
Members of team Peaches celebrate their win in the local membership drive during a wrap-up party on May 12 at Colonial Printers, Inc. just before a USC Baseball game.

Letter From Steven Mungo
HBASC President As you have probably heard by now, we have reached a compromise on the sprinkler bill in the Senate and anticipate getting the House to concur without much difficulty. While it’s not the total victory we had hoped for, it assures us that we will not have the feared “train wreck” that we would have faced had we run out of time in the legislative process. We have almost 4 years before we have to worry about implementation and a lot can happen in the meantime. One of the key amendments that passed with this requires all new codes to be approved by the legislature, which should help prevent the inclusion of nefarious code provisions in the future. Many were responsible for this victory and I would like to thank everyone involved. Today, many of our members sacrificed their time and spent the
day at the capital. Their presence energized our advocates and deflated our opponents. While we had a good argument, it often takes more than a just cause to prevail in politics. We learned a lot today and grew as an organization. Among those lessons is the fact that if we don’t financially support political campaigns, we can’t expect the attention of the legislature. Many of our members still don’t get that, so I challenge everyone to take some of the money that you will save as a result of this victory and contribute it to the PAC so we can have a significant influence on the upcoming elections. Regardless of the victor in the governor’s race, LLR is probably going to be significantly restructured. We need to have a seat at the table when that time comes. These are big $ issues for us and the PAC contributions relative to the potential savings are insignificant.
We found out who our friends were and were not. More later. And last, we learned that you take the field with your best players. We would have not been victorious without the efforts of Julian Barton and Mark Nix from the state staff. Our EO’s from around the state did a wonderful job getting out the members and getting calls generated to the legislators. Our contract lobbyists, Daryl Campbell and Richard Davis along with his team, counseled us well and helped broker the deal. And last, the people who didn’t get paid to help; Legislative Chair Andy White, SCHBA VP, Mike Lowman worked tirelessly as did many others. I can’t name everyone, but you know who you are. We are a great association and it is a privilege to be called your president this year.
Under 40 Club
A new group within the HBA, the Under 40 Club, is determined to make a positive impact within the association. The Under 40 Club has been developed to encourage younger members within the association to get involved with current industry issues and assist in the recruitment and participation of current and new HBA members. The group plans to meet the third Thursday of each month and will be responsible for planning a HBA General Membership meeting this fall. For more information about participating in this group, contact Chairmen Owen Edwards or Cory Lorick with Midlands Mortgage Corp. HBA Members under 40 years old had their first group meeting in April of this year. 16 www.columbiabuilders.com

Congressman Addison Graves ”Joe” Wilson U.S. House of Representatives
In the years since founding RESH Marketing in 1979, a marketing firm specializing in the housing industry, Hal Von Nessen has been recognized for his service to builders, developers and the sale of new homes. His honors include winning the coveted Trina Ripley Excellence in Education Award, induction in the Society of Honored Associates, HBA of SC Keystone and Associate of the Year Awards winner and recipient of the REGAL Lifetime Achievement Award. While the accolades serve as a tribute of his service to the housing industry, his legacy is documented in his tireless support of HBA members.
Congressman Joe Wilson has been aptly recognized, both statewide and nationally, as an unrelenting champion of the housing industry. His contributions were first recognized in 1995 as a member of the South Carolina Senate when he received the prestigious Hammer & Trowel Award from the HBA of South Carolina. As a Member of Congress he never wavered in his support of housing issues. That support has included the defense, introduction and passage of several notable and timely pieces of legislation including the home buyer tax credit. Rep. Wilson strives to keep the “American Dream” affordable by supporting the housing industry and its critical role in the economy.
