August Quarterly Meeting
The membership of the Columbia Remodelers met for a Quarterly Meeting on Tuesday, August 30 at Seawell’s. About 25 members were in attendance. After networking, the meeting got underway. We had a recap and discussion about the Home Improvement Show held earlier in the month. After that, we had dinner and then our guests speaker started the program.
We had Andrew Cole from Collins & Lacy speak to us about a recent decision by the SC Supreme Court that affects general liability insurance for builders. The cases involved have been heard and reheard multiple times over the past few years and involve a lot of “legalese,” but Andrew gave a great review and translated it into English for us. Green Certification Program Overview The Green Building Council not only helps members and the public better understand how homes are built green, we also certify homes that are built to the National Green Building Standard (ANSI ICC-700). We have copies of the Standard available for purchase at the HBA Office and we have members that can make the process of building to the Standard as easy and cost-effective as possible.
And, since this is a local certification program, we are able to offer this green home certification at a fee lower than any of the national programs. Plus, there are discounts for HBA Members, Green Building Council members and volume builders. If you’re thinking about building green, we hope you consider the local Build Green Greater Columbia certification program. Contact Bin Wilcenski at the HBA to learn more and get started TODAY!

A Letter from the Chairman As I traveled to different builder and real estate offices this past year there was one question I heard repeated over and over in conversations…”Where are all the buyers?” Believe it or not there are buyers out there. Maybe a little less than last year, but they are out there. The question is not “Where are the buyers?” but rather “Who is your buyer?” In the pressure of a buyers market many builders struggled to increase features while having to lower their overall price in order to stay competitive. While pricing and features are extremely important you may be leaving sales and/ or a little profit on the table if you do not understand who your buyer is. By identifying who your buyer is, you can design your product not based on what the competition is doing but on what the needs and 8

wants of your buyers are. By identifying who your buyer is, you can target your marketing efforts and dollars to attract and capture these buyers. Throughout this year your Sales and Marketing Council has worked hard to bring you free and informative educational opportunities to help you identify buyers in the market, such as with our She-Conomy topic, as well as different mediums to reach them with classes on blogging, video marketing, and the maximizing your internet presence. Our goal is to help provide the tools members need to be successful and provide those tools at the lowest cost possible. I strongly encourage you to take advantage of these free opportunities. Thank you so much for this opportunity to serve you, Marlene Sheard, 2011 SMC Chairman

An HBA General Membership Meeting was held on Friday, August 19 at 11:30 am at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center. Over 200 members were in attendance for the meeting, which featured two USC football coaches and the Columbia Remodelers Awards winners announcement. Normally, our meetings are held on Thursday evenings at Seawell’s, but this meeting was held in conjunction with our Home Improvement Show that was taking place in the convention center and opening to the public at 1 pm that day. The meeting was set at that time and location in order to let members see the show with the greatest of ease. Because the Home Improvement Show is presented by the Columbia Remodelers council of the HBA, this meeting also served as the vehicle to announce the winners of the 10th annual Columbia Remodelers Awards (CRAs). The purpose of the awards program is to showcase high-quality work being performed by local remodelers, and announcing the CRA winners to our members helps spread the word and accomplish that goal. Special thanks to Columbia Metropolitan Magazine for sponsoring the awards program and for helping to announce the winners at the meeting. We had 21 entries in 11 categories and

the judges selected 12 winners. Please turn to page 7 to learn who the winners are. Congratulations to the winners and thanks to everyone who participated. Entries for the 11th annual CRAs will be accepted in May of 2012. Start taking before pictures of your remodeling jobs so you can enter the awards. Our special guest speakers at the General Membership meeting were University of South Carolina Defensive Line Coach Brad Lawing and Offensive Line Coach Shawn Elliott. They gave an inside look at what the Gamecocks were working on and facing for the coming year, and did so in an informal and humorous way. We finished up the meeting with some awards for members reaching new levels in the SPIKE Club. We also awarded the Spirit of Leadership Award to Ed McDonnell. Allyson Way Hank accepted the Membership Drive Cup on behalf of the Queens of Hearts team in the May Membership Drive. After the meeting concluded members were invited to head down the hallway to the Main Hall for a first look at the 17th Annual Home Improvement Show. See page 6 to see how the show went this year.
