he learning curve for building high performance homes is somewhat steep, and our council exists to help builders and the public make better sense of it all. That’s why we launched the Video Learning Center this year at www.columbiagreenbuilders.com. See short videos from members on a variety of topics. Tax Credit for Energy-Efficient Homes

W

hen Congress finally came together on a solution to the Fiscal Cliff issue, they brought back tax credits for energy-efficient homes. Section 45L provides a $2000 credit to builders for each qualified new energyefficient home that is constructed. Housing units may be for owner-occupied or leased use. All qualified housing units must be in buildings no more than three stories above grade.

This tax credit has been renewed through 2013 but expires at The Green Building Council of Greater Columbia now has a page on Facebook! the end of the year, unless extended by Congress. To qualify as a new energy-efficient home, the home must: (1) Be certified to have a projected level of annual heating and cooling energy consumption that meets the standards for a 50-percent reduction in energy usage, compared to a comparable dwelling constructed in accordance with the standards of the 2006 International Energy Conservation Code

as in effect (i.e. the 2007 Supplement) and any applicable Federal minimum efficiency standards for equipment. (2) Obtain one-fifth of such 50-percent savings from the building envelope. Talk to your home energy rater about homes you built in 2012 to see if they qualify for the credit, and plan your 2013 homes so that they do qualify. Building and certifying in the CHiP Home Program is a great way to begin this process.

A Letter From the Chairman

The Sales & Marketing Council of Columbia (SMC) encourages and maintains a high quality of sales and marketing expertise through educational programs, networking opportunities and recognition for its members.

I

have heard that as you get older, time goes faster – I believe it! 2012 was a blur and as we begin 2013, I hope that I can slow down and enjoy more of the wonderful moments that we are given and hope that you are able to, also. Making the most out of everything we have is pertinent to our success and happiness. Have you made the most out of your membership for the Sales & Marketing Council? Most of us have not. The Sales & Marketing Council is here for one main reason – to support you and our

Association. We have strived to bring pertinent workshops and education opportunities that will appeal to most, to provide strong networking opportunities, and to schedule speakers who can give us direction and insight. Are we, your board, the ones missing the insight? What topics are important to you? What do you need to take that next step in your business or career? We are here to serve you and I hope to engage you, our members, in providing us with that direction to fulfill your needs and to make your membership an invaluable tool in your chosen profession. So much so, that you will invite NEW members! I challenge you in this lucky 2013 year of our Lord to make the most of your gifts, talents and time…and

your membership! Speak out! We have a fully loaded board with 30 members who have volunteered (or were drafted!) to serve and to help us make the most out of our council and our memberships. This year, we are introducing the SMC2 - The Super Member Committee. They will be assisting the board and reaching out to you so that we can grab every opportunity out there to make the most of our new year. Don’t worry, if you don’t contact us, we will contact you! I thank you and look forward to opportunity and challenge given to me and plan to make the most of it! All the best,

Susan Sulliv an Longshore

Frank Clark Becomes Senior Life Director of the National Association of Home Builders

I

rmo businessman Frank Clark of Clark’s Services was named Senior Life Director of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) during the recent International Builders’ Show held in Las Vegas, Nevada.

since 1987. In the past 25 years, he has served as President of the association and as President of the Home Builders Association of South Carolina. He has helped start the HBA Charitable Foundation and the HBA Disaster Relief Team.

In order to become a Senior Life Director, Clark attended two NAHB Board of Directors meetings per year for 20 consecutive years. No small feat when you note that these meetings took place in Washington, D.C. and in various other locations around the country, and that Clark’s travels were mostly self-funded. His dedication to the direction and leadership of the national association are greatly appreciated.

His efforts with Impact Fee legislation and Multiple Lot Discounts have helped keep the cost of housing low in our area, helping many to achieve the American Dream of homeownership with fewer hurdles. The NAHB is a trade association that helps promote the policies that make housing a national priority. Since 1942, NAHB has been serving its members, the housing industry and the public at large. Learn more at www.nahb.org.

Hal Von Nessen, IRM Fellow, Named 2012 Sales & Marketing Educator of the Year by NAHB

I

nstitute of Residential Marketing Fellow Hal Von Nessen has been named the 2012 Sales and Marketing Educator of the Year by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) in recognition of his successful efforts to educate builders and other industry professionals about new home sales and marketing. Von Nessen has been involved in new home sales and marketing for more than three decades. In 1979, he founded RESH Marketing Consultants, a full-service advertising and marketing firm that has served builders and developers as well as tourism and other industries. Prior to starting his own company, Von Nessen enjoyed a successful career in radio and television broadcasting. Von Nessen has been actively involved in NAHB, serving on the boards for the National Sales and Marketing Council and the Institute of Residential Marketing (IRM). He was a founding member

of the Columbia Sales and Marketing Council. He has won numerous local, state and national awards, including NAHB’s prestigious Trina Ripley Award for Excellence in Education and the Bill Molster Award. He holds the Certified Aging-inPlace Specialist (CAPS), Certified New Home Marketing Professional (CMP) and Master in Residential Marketing (MIRM) designations and, in 2011, was honored as an IRM Fellow for his longstanding contributions to the Institute. In addition, Von Nessen has been a staunch advocate for NAHB education. As an NAHB approved instructor for 16 courses, he has taught hundreds of classes on a wide range of sales and marketing topics. He also contributed to and authored several IRM courses. Von Nessen also has been a presenter at the International Builders’ Show as well as local, state and national trade shows.
