MemberNews STEVEN MUNGO AWARDED CHAMPION OF THE AMERICAN DREAM AWARD Columbia, SC - Steven Mungo, CEO of Mungo Homes, was recently honored by the Home Builders Association of South Carolina (HBASC) with the inaugural 2010 Champion of the American Dream Award.

Builder magazine releases the annual Builder100 each May for the previous year.

The Champion of the American Dream is awarded to an individual in recognition of their leadership and efforts in keeping the American Dream of home ownership affordable. The importance of home ownership cannot be understated. A home is the most valuable asset many families will ever own, but additional regulatory costs keeps many families from owning a home. For every five hundred dollars added to a house, 1,809 S.C. families are priced out from owning their own home.

FRANK B. NORRIS AWARDED THOMAS N. BAGNAL ASSOCIATE MEMBER OF THE YEAR AWARD

According to HBASC President, Mike Lowman, “Steven has proven to be a stalwart champion of protecting the American Dream in South Carolina and he honors our industry for his tireless dedication to keeping housing affordable.”

Frank B. Norris of the Frank B. Norris & Company, Inc. in Columbia is the 2011 recipient of the HBASC Thomas N. Bagnal Associate of the Year award, the most prestigious HBASC award for Associate Members. The award is given to individuals who demonstrate the same qualities as the awards namesake, Thomas N. Bagnal. These qualities include; tireless service to their community, home builders association (HBA) and to the home building industry. Frank Norris has been an ardent supporter of the home building industry and a member of the HBA for more than 40 years. He has served as committee chairs on both the local and state associations and continues to give generously of his time and resources. Frank Norris has testified in Senate and House Committee hearings on behalf of the home building industry and the citizens of South Carolina. He has played vocal rolls in reducing the statute of repose from 13 to 8 years, fighting to oppose the mandate for sprinklers in houses; as well, he has met many times with lawmakers throughout the discussions of the Crossman case involving general liability for builders. According to Earl McLeod, Executive Director of the HBA of Greater Columbia, “Frank Norris started his company more than 25 years ago with the tenet to provide the tools and service to make those in the building industry successful. A goal he continues to practice every day for the benefit of our community, industry and Association.”

LOCAL HOME BUILDER MAINTAINS HIGH NATIONAL RANKING The Mungo Companies has maintained its ranking as the 35th largest builder in the country according to Builder magazine. Mungo’s ranking is in the annual Builder 100 edition and, based on closings, ranks all public and privately held builders from across the country. Builder magazine reports that success didn’t come easily in 2010. “Builders redrew their house plans to match buyer demand for flexible and energyefficient spaces. And some now compete with short sales and foreclosures after painfully lowering costs, thanks to cooperation and concessions from subcontractors and suppliers.” Principal Steven Mungo said, “I’m so proud of the continued hard work by our staff. We’re making changes every day to make sure we’re in tune with the market and the needs of our buyers. And our stability is evidence that we deliver a quality product at a great value and that we stand behind each and every new home that we build.” 12

C-CORE MENTORING Back to school, Back to mentoring Summer break has come and gone so the preparation for a new school year includes deciding what classes to take, what clothes to buy and for the more focused student, what clubs and associations to join. Who you’re around and the things you are exposed to play a huge role in the career paths you will gravitate towards. It is this decision process is where the professionals in the construction/ home building field and the C-CORE mentoring program want to play a role. About C-CORE Mentoring HBI C-CORE is a new career-focused, industry-sponsored mentoring program that matches youth ages 16-18 interested in home building with adults in the home building community ranging from carpenters and contractors to real estate agents and appraisers. The national program, funded by a three-year grant from the U.S. Department of Justice, will match 5,000 youth with more than 1,600 industry mentors recruited from home builders associations, local business, housing-related organizations and their local communities. We have just completed the first nine months of the program, which culminated in a celebration of the achievements by the current members/mentees. C-CORE is an incentive driven program that encourages setting and attaining goals. This celebration was a Lake House Cookout for the Coaches members and their families that included kayaking, boat rides and plenty of food for those in attendance. The coaches got the chance to congratulate their current members and be introduced to some of their newest partnerships. The achievements celebrated by our participants thus far include, Continued involvement in
