President’s Letter Dr. Terry B. Smith

It has been my pleasure to serve as your executive vice president and dean for Academic Affairs since 1996, and I am honored to be interim president in 2013–14. Dr. Brouder’s legacy is remarkable, firm — and a challenge to us all. His legacy is remarkable because few, if any, of America’s private colleges have experienced such qualitative and quantitative growth in the past 18 years. His legacy is firm because the culture of civility, respect and integrity suffuses the college and its people. His legacy is a challenge because Dr. Brouder has set the bar high. The board of trustees and he launched and championed the Tradition Meets Tomorrow Campaign. The Gerald T. and Bonnie M. Brouder Science Center

is the pièce de résistance of the Campaign; all gifts for all purposes are being put to good use. I have served on the Campaign Steering Committee from the beginning and can attest to the commitment of the volunteers who give their time, talent and treasure to ensure the Campaign is successful. I am delighted that in September, the Campaign surpassed the goal of $10 million with a current total of $10.4 million. Our efforts to seek philanthropic partners will continue through next year, culminating in a Campaign Celebration scheduled for Sept. 25, 2014, at the annual President’s Society dinner. The success of the Tradition Meets Tomorrow Campaign has served as a springboard for a new era of philanthropy at Columbia College. You have been instrumental in our success and will continue to be. I am grateful to each of our contributors for their commitment and investment. But the needs are many, and the competition for philanthropic giving is fierce. Many of us love the college, but we also love our children, our church and other servant organizations – the list is long. I support the Tradition Meets Tomorrow Campaign because our students benefit directly and because the college’s needs are real. I also support the Tradition Meets Tomorrow Campaign to honor Dr. Brouder’s legacy.

Executive Director’s Letter Michael Kateman

I’m fascinated by the literal Latin translation for alma mater — nourishing mother — and that it has become the description for where a person attends school. After 25 years in higher education alumni and development work, I’ve seen a lot of folks who have a meaningful, lifelong relationship with their alma mater much like a mother-child relationship. Just this past summer, one such relationship deeply touched my soul. Marilyn Henderson Robbins graduated from Christian College in 1943 along with Trustee Emerita Peggy Price. They have been lifelong friends and shared many alumnae experiences with their alma mater through the years. Marilyn was the inaugural performer in the CCAA’s Alumni Concert Series in 2003. That day, she performed several of her original pieces at the piano and accompanied the Jane Froman Singers as Columbia College music instructor Nollie Moore conducted. In June, Marilyn’s daughter Meredith called me to say that her mother’s health was failing rapidly, and she really wanted to visit with Nollie and me one last time. Meredith said the family had always wanted to create a scholarship to honor Marilyn and felt they couldn’t wait any longer. We brainstormed ways to set up a scholarship and as the discussion continued, I realized Marilyn needed peace in her final days. The peace was only going to come when she knew her original musical compositions were going to have a permanent home at her alma mater. You see, as a composer, Marilyn’s music was much like one of her children. We had discussed it several times through the years. She needed to know her music would be all right after she was gone, just as she knew her two daughters and her grandchildren were going to be all right. Nollie and I arrived at Marilyn’s care facility on a beautiful, sunshiny June afternoon accompanied by

6

Nollie Moore, Marilyn Henderson Robbins ’43, and Michael Kateman during a visit in June 2013 at her care facility.

Meredith and Marsha, Marilyn’s other daughter. As always, Marilyn was dressed to the nines! She greeted us with a hug and kisses, and also tears. I could tell she was so relieved to see us. We talked. We laughed. We enjoyed being together. Our conversation was about her days at Christian College, her love of music and watching people’s lives change because of it. When I told her about the Marilyn Henderson Robbins ’43 Music Award, she cried tears of joy and appreciation. Nollie told her we had a permanent home for her original musical compositions in our Columbia College archives and said he would sing her patriotic piece at the college’s Military Appreciation Day. A sense of calm and peacefulness enveloped all of us as Nollie shared this news with her. She asked if she and Nollie could perform together that afternoon. We went into the parlor where several other residents were playing bingo. They suspended their game for the performance. Marilyn rose from her wheelchair, removed the oxygen line and shared with her audience that Nollie was the musical director at her alma mater and was joining her today to perform

the hymn, “In the Garden.” She spoke of her time in Jerusalem when she was able to quietly visit the Garden of Gethsemane. She then sat at the piano and began to play the most melodious arrangement of the classic hymn I’ve ever heard. Nollie sang beautifully. The audience was hushed by the music and enthusiastically applauded when Marilyn hit the last note. It was a perfect moment. As Nollie and I returned to campus that day, we talked about the deep spiritual impact the visit had on us both. It was like nothing we’d experienced before. Nollie identified sophomore Jordan Nigus as the first recipient of Marilyn’s scholarship later that afternoon. We sent Marilyn a photograph of him the next day. Her grandson, Columbia College alumnus Jacob Black ’05, told us she just couldn’t stop looking at it after it arrived. A week after our visit, Marilyn passed away. Meredith and Marsha told us the visit from her alma mater gave Marilyn the peace and assurance she needed to say goodbye. This is the power of your alma mater, your nourishing mother. Never underestimate it. Embrace it. Enjoy it. Thank you to the many philanthropists and volunteers who help make this college so special. I celebrate each of you this year in honor of your sister, Marilyn Henderson Robbins ’43.

A League of Their Own A local nonprofit sponsors scholarships for women By Whitney Dreier

The Assistance League of Mid-Missouri contributes passionately to the Columbia community. The nonprofit provides emergency room survivor kits to victims of sexual assault; it donates books to preschoolers; it even operates a thrift store that sells quality clothing and accessories. Although Columbia College students might have taken advantage of these – and other – resources, there is one ALMM resource that directly affects the school’s female population. The Assisting Women’s Achievement Scholarship provides tuition assistance for nontraditional female Columbia College students 25 and older. The thinking behind the scholarship is that a college degree improves employment opportunities and security for women. “I know that every dollar we work so hard to make through our resource development programs and Upscale Resale store sales translates directly into assistance for women and children in Columbia,” says former president Sue Finlay, who has been a member volunteer of ALMM for 11 years. “That is important to me — that our assistance stays local — and helps our neighbors.”

What is the Assistance League? • The Assistance League of Mid-Missouri is the 90th of 120 chapters in the Assistance League nationwide network. The first Assistance League chapter was formed in 1919 in Southern California, in response to families impacted by WWI, and ALMM grew out of that effort. Chartered in 1994, the mid-Missouri organization is now 19 years old. • The Assistance League has 26,000 member volunteers who give 2.6 million service hours, return $36 million to local communities and assist 1.2 million people in need.

10

Approximately 10 women are selected each year to receive scholarship money. More than $125,000 has been awarded to 69 deserving adult female students since 2005. Each student also receives a mentor from the Assistance League. “As treasurer and as president, I’ve had the opportunity to meet the people who have been helped by our programs,” Finlay says. “That is a very good feeling — to know the person who has received the scholarship, or the parent whose child has just received a new set of clothes, or the teacher who has just received a Links to Learning teaching grant to enrich their school classroom.” On May 3, 2013, Columbia College celebrated the Assistance League’s $200,000 gift, which will help continue to provide support for the Assisting Women’s Achievement Scholarship. The Assistance League has a room named after the organization in the science center in honor of its generosity. Finlay says supporting Columbia College is important because the goals of the organizations align. “The population of the school closely matches those we assist,” Finlay says. “With our goal of helping women and the college’s education of adult female students, ALMM and Columbia College make great partners.” Right: Assistance League members, in the Upscale Resale back room, work to help the Columbia community through a store that provides support for women and children. Honoring Bob Burchard A new scholarship is named in honor of Columbia College’s athletic director By Whitney Dreier

More than 100 people filled the lobby of Boone County National Bank on Oct. 18, 2012, to surprise head men’s basketball coach and athletic director Bob Burchard with the announcement of a scholarship named in his honor. Some guests even wore cardboard mustaches as a tribute to Burchard’s famous ’stache. “Some people claim athletics is the window or the front door to a college,” said Burchard, who was truly surprised that $111,000 of the $125,000 fundraising goal had already been raised at the time of the announcement. “I’m living proof that athletics rides the wave of an amazing place; this wave has been going for a long while, and a guy like me sits on that wave as long as he can. It’s been one heck of a ride!” Greg Johnston, president of Johnston and Associates, Inc., a Jefferson City-based governmental consulting firm, was among the donors who contributed to the Bob Burchard Celebration of Excellence scholarship, which supports student athletes and the athletic department. Johnston was among Burchard’s first high school recruits. “But my freshman year was difficult,” he remembers. “I suffered a career-ending knee injury the first week of college and later that year lost my mother to cancer.” But despite the fact that he never played, Burchard chose to honor Johnston’s scholarship that year. “He encouraged me to stay in school, and he worked to find replacement scholarships to make that possible,” says Johnston, who earned a history degree in 1991. “Bob’s commitment to me is characteristic of his dedication to Columbia College and all his student athletes. The Burchard Scholarship honors his 25 year commitment to the college and will ensure future student athletes will have the opportunity to benefit from the environment of excellence fostered by Coach Burchard.”

Bob Burchard’s Career Highlights • 632-226 (.737) overall record • AMC Coach of the Year eight times • Cougars have qualified for the NAIA National Championship 17 times in the past 19 seasons • 2009 NAIA national runner-up finish • Received the NABC Guardians of the Game Pillar Award at the 2010 NCAA Final Four • 2012 NAIA Hall of Fame inductee • Guided team to the college’s first undefeated regular season in 2012-13 • 2013 Missouri Hall of Fame inductee

Helping the Humanities Columbia College celebrates 162 years — and a major gift donation By Whitney Dreier

On Jan. 18, 1851, Christian Female College received its charter from the Missouri Legislature, making it the first women’s college west of the Mississippi River to be chartered by a state legislature. Columbia College faculty, staff and students gathered in Dorsey Gym to applaud the school’s history and continued success on Jan. 17, 2013. Dr. Gerald Brouder, Dr. Terry Smith, Dr. Brad Lookingbill and Nollie Moore were among those presenting at the 162nd Charter Day event. After Brouder provided his annual lecture about Columbia College and the world 150 years ago, he made a major gift announcement: M.J. Walther Donnelly ’43 had given $572,000 to the Tradition Meets Tomorrow Campaign. Donnelly’s gift, which is one of the M.J. Walther Donnelly largest in college history, will endow scholarships in her name, providing additional financial support to English majors, and support the construction of the new science building. “I am honored to recognize the significant, continued support of M.J. Walther Donnelly,” Brouder says. “This gift reflects her passion for education, which will support our core mission of teaching and thus prepare students to have a meaningful impact on their communities for decades to come.” Originally from Ohio, Donnelly attended Christian College in 1941. “The minute I saw Christian College, it is where I knew I wanted to start my college education,” she says. During her undergraduate career, Donnelly became somewhat of a fixture on campus, where she excelled in the classroom, led multiple student organizations and served as the yearbook editor. “The

14

dean made it clear I needed to do superbly at Christian College if I wanted to continue my education at an eastern college,” she remembers. “I did learn a lot in my time at the college, and I continue to keep learning and will do so the rest of my life.” After graduation, Donnelly furthered her education at Barnard College, Columbia University and the University of Dayton. Donnelly, who currently resides in Nokomis, Fla., and Republic, Mich., continues to serve Columbia College as a volunteer, assisting the college with fundraising and recruitment efforts. “Columbia (Christian) College made me realize my potential,” Donnelly says. “This is why I want my philanthropy to support the college, so others might realize the potential they possess.” In return for her generosity, Donnelly’s name will live on in the M.J. Walther Donnelly ’43 Lookout Conference Room in the new science building, which opened in August 2013. Across campus, liberal arts scholars will benefit from the M.J. Walther Donnelly ’43 Scholarship, which will be awarded to English students. “I was so delighted to learn that our English program will receive a significant gift for student scholarships,” says Christina Ingoglia, assistant professor of English and creative writing. “Thanks to Ms. Donnelly’s generosity, we hope to attract top English students from across the country to our small but vibrant program.”

Farming the Future MFA supports higher education for Missouri students

Throughout the company’s long history, leaders at MFA have understood the importance of education. In 1958, MFA Incorporated, along with MFA Oil and affiliated MFA agencies established the MFA Foundation, a nonprofit, philanthropic organization that primarily supports educational activities. Since the foundation’s inception, it has provided more than $13 million worth of scholarships to more than 10,000 students, including many who attend Columbia College. MFA is a Midwestern farm-supply and marketing cooperative founded in 1914 by a group of seven farmers. In its 100 years of operation, MFA has helped shape agriculture in the Midwest, providing the latest agricultural products and services to its member owners, all in the effort to help the individual farmer prosper. MFA serves more than 45,000 farmers in Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, Oklahoma and Arkansas. For more than 75 years, the MFA Foundation has encouraged the pursuit of higher education at Columbia College, giving more than $188,000 in scholarships and gifts over time. On March 22, Columbia College celebrated a gift of $100,000 to the Tradition Meets Tomorrow Campaign. The gift will create the MFA Scholars Program, which will provide scholarships for students from Missouri who hope to attend Columbia College. While college scholarships are the primary undertaking of the MFA Foundation, the foundation occasionally funds worthwhile projects consistent with its original purpose of providing educational opportunities for youth. Included in these programs are: Missouri 4-H Foundation, Missouri FFA Association and the Missouri Young Farmers/Young Farm Wives Association. In recognition of its gifts to the college, the MFA Foundation received a named classroom on the main level of the new science building. Making History Justin Williams evolves from history student to history professor By Whitney Dreier

Justin Williams ’05 was an 18-year-old high school student when he attended Scholarship Day on the main campus in 2002. “I immediately got a sense of the college’s strengths,” says the Kansas City native. “It was immediately clear to me that this was a place with great faculty, intimate atmosphere and upward trajectory.” Williams set out to major in history and minor in political science — a decision that was influenced in part by meeting history professor Dr. Brad Lookingbill on Scholarship Day. “From my first conversation with Justin, I noticed that he asked thoughtful questions regarding history as both a discipline and a profession,” Lookingbill remembers. “What was particularly striking about him as a student in my classes was his exceptional ability to understand and to communicate big ideas.” Whether discussing Custer’s blunders at Little Bighorn or Outkast’s lyrics in “Bombs over Baghdad,” the two shared a love for history that Williams carried with him to Stony Brook University, where he earned both a master’s degree and Ph.D. in modern African history. “As a history major, Columbia College laid the foundation for me to start my studies and really did a

great job of preparing me for graduate school,” Williams says. “I felt much more prepared than many of my classmates who did their undergraduate work at large public universities.” Williams currently lives in New York City, where he works as an assistant professor of history at CUNYCity College. “I was the first person in my family to graduate from college; now I teach college students,” says Williams, who has made a gift to Columbia College every year since his graduation and is a member of the 1851 Society, which recognizes contributors who make gifts within the fiscal year. “Needless to say, Columbia College made a huge impact on my life; if my donations help the school change another person’s life as it did mine, it’s more than worth it.”

A Culture of Discovery Brouder Science Center enhances student learning By Celia Darrough

In Gerald T. Brouder’s 1995 inaugural address, he listed deepening and strengthening the sciences as one of his main priorities for his presidency. Eighteen years later, his goal culminated in the opening of a science building on the first day of classes. To honor his and Mrs. Brouder’s legacy at Columbia College, the building was named the Gerald T. and Bonnie M. Brouder Science Center and dedicated Sept. 26. At the dedication, the college announced and celebrated a transformational gift from Bill and Jolene Schulz, only the second at this level in the history of the college. The new building was funded through a partnership between Columbia College’s financial resources and the philanthropic efforts of the Tradition Meets Tomorrow Campaign. Contributions from Columbia College leaders, volunteers, friends and alumni have supported the Campaign in raising $10.4 million of its $10 million goal to date. Proceeds from the personalized engraved bricks at the building’s entrance also went toward the Campaign. The new building is an addition to the main campus that greatly benefits the science department, says Dr. Frank Somer, chair of the physical and biological sciences department.

20

The extra space could not have come soon enough. Previously, many science classes were taught in Robnett-Spence Hall, and the nursing program was based in Federal Hall in downtown Columbia. The new science center allows every science and nursing faculty member to be located in one area. Biology, chemistry, environmental science, forensic science and nursing are all based in the building. There are multiple labs for each subject and dedicated rooms for storage and preparation. MacKenzie Booth, a senior majoring in chemistry who has received science scholarships and awards, plans to attend medical school after graduating from Columbia College. Her gratitude for this new building is palpable. “I think Columbia College should be proud of our alumni, and the building is a testament of that support. Without them taking part in committees and donating to the cause, the science building would not be possible. I hope the building inspires future alumni to give back.”

She has been a member of the board since 1982. Gary R. Drewing Advanced Chemistry Lab Advanced chemistry laboratories feature modern equipment, seat 16 students and, like many of the labs, have both SMART Boards and whiteboards that slide to accommodate the need for technology or traditional tools. Gary Drewing has been a trustee since 1999, the same year his son Gary Jr. graduated from Columbia College with a bachelor’s degree.

Environment There are many measures in place to ensure the building is environmentally friendly. The lights are on a motion sensor, the building uses reclaimed heat, and top-notch insulation prevents heat loss and gain, says Bob Hutton, the executive director for Administrative Services.

Safety The labs feature emergency showers and 100 percent turnover air ventilation for safety. No returning air enters the laboratories — it is sucked out and replaced with fresh air through both the ventilation system and fume hoods on the wall, which is better for everyone’s health, says Dr. Frank Somer, chair of the physical and biological sciences department.

A goal realized

The Brouder Science Center was envisioned, planned and completed by the 16th president of Columbia College. With the help of alumni, trustees, faculty, staff and students, students’ learning experiences are enriched by this unique building. Plus, the commitment the college and the college community has to the sciences is recognized with just a glance at the building, the manifestation of Dr. Brouder’s 1995 speech. The Brouder Science Center is located on the main campus off Rangeline Street between Stafford Library and the Owens Soccer Stadium.

“I think Columbia College should be proud of our alumni, and the building is a testament of that support. Without them taking part in committees and donating to the cause, the science building would not be possible. I hope the building inspires future alumni to give back as well.” — MacKenzie Booth, senior, page 20
