Columbia College Annual Report 2014

President’s Letter Scott Dalrymple, Ph.D.

As I write these words, I’m preparing to Storm the Gate for the first time. Tonight, new Columbia College students will follow our mascot, Scooter the Cougar, across Rogers Street and through Rogers Gate, the iconic symbol of our college. They will continue onto Bass Commons, where they will be greeted by hundreds of cheering faculty, staff, alumni and returning students, all participating in a beloved annual tradition. There will be ice cream, Frisbees and much rejoicing.

4

Symbols have meaning. As new students embark on their college careers, I can think of no better symbol than passing through a gate to a new place — a place where they will experience true growth, encouragement and support. I don’t expect the running students to think about that now, but someday they will. Recently, I spoke with an alumna of the college whose mother, now in her 90s and herself a Christian College alumna, made a pilgrimage back to Missouri. Why? She wanted to walk through Rogers Gate one more time. Some of the young people I’ll be running beside tonight will one day make that same pilgrimage, and I consider it a sacred duty to make sure that Rogers Gate still stands, ready to receive them. Read the names of the individuals and organizations in this report — they’re making sure of it. On behalf of all of those future alumni, I thank you.

Executive Director’s Letter Michael Kateman

Tradition has met Tomorrow at Columbia College. Through this campaign, we have accomplished so much more than raising $11.3 million, which exceeded our $10 million goal. We have successfully united the rich heritage of Christian College with the ever-adaptable nature of Columbia College. Our future is bright as a college because our alumni, friends, faculty, staff and students embrace what Polly Batterson, professor emerita and author of “Columbia College: 150 Years of Courage, Commitment, and Change,” summarizes as the core values of our college: a commitment to serve the underserved, a commitment to quality education and a commitment to adapt to change. Tradition has met Tomorrow as we now have a sustainable culture of philanthropy that expresses a firm confidence in our future. The many volunteers and contributors who made it possible to exceed our fundraising goal are the catalyst for our college’s growth because of the legacy they have created through the Campaign. We have a record number of donors who have made gifts ranging from $10 to $1 million. We have record membership in the President’s Society, the 1851 Society and the St. Clair Society. We’ve celebrated a record number of leadership gifts, which are documented in a celebratory video tribute that can be viewed at www.TraditionMeetsTomorrow.com. Tradition has met Tomorrow as the Columbia College Alumni Association has welcomed the largest and most diverse group of volunteers in its history to the board of directors. The association has developed and executed a strategic plan where tradition guides the future. Alumni from the Day, Evening, Nationwide and Online Campuses are leading the CCAA into a productive future that honors our traditions while embracing the ever-changing needs of our more than 84,000 alumni.

6

This annual report of philanthropy and volunteerism celebrates the gifts of time, talent and treasure of so many people who are helping us envision a greater future for Columbia College. I would like to personally thank a few specific leaders who have labored with the college throughout the Campaign. Their individual dedication to their alma mater is inspiring. Their collective enthusiasm is contagious. Thank you to: Campaign Convening Chair Anita Abbott Timmons ’58 National Campaign Steering Committee Chair Web Bixby ’82 ational Campaign Steering Committee Vice Chair N June Hurdle ’83 CCAA Past President Dale Simons ’65 CCAA Past President Martha Eberhard ’00 CCAA President Bill Leeper ’04

Envision I offer a special thank you to all of the volunteer leaders who have served on the Tradition Meets Tomorrow National Campaign Steering Committee and the CCAA Board of Directors. Your leadership is much appreciated. In addition to our volunteer leaders, I must give a humble thank you to the phenomenal staff members in the Development, Alumni and Public Relations division who have worked so diligently behind the scenes. It is an enormous blessing for the college to be surrounded by such talented employees. President Emeritus Gerald Brouder’s belief in honoring tradition while exploring the opportunities of tomorrow grounded our work throughout the Campaign. Thank you, Dr. Brouder. As Columbia College envisions a bright, productive and meaningful future, we look forward to working with President Scott Dalrymple and the alumni, faculty, staff and students who have proven their love and devotion for the college.

Columbia College Annual Report 2014

Campaign Report The Tradition Meets Tomorrow Campaign concluded on June 30, 2014, after raising $11.3 million — well above its $10 million goal. The Campaign identified five areas of support: the sciences, arts and humanities, business, adult higher education and athletics. These leadership gifts and grants from individuals, businesses and foundations renew and strengthen education for students today and for generations to come. The five-year Campaign was one of the college’s most successful efforts, and many of these generous donors were honored with named spaces in the Brouder Science Center. See page 95 for a full list.

2008 Kay Jacobs Sells ’38 and O.V. Sells Kay Jacobs Sells ’38 and O.V. Sells announced in December 2008 a $150,000 gift to the Brouder Science Center. Cause and Effect A worthy cause and a lasting effect on Columbia College

With the incredible amount of support Columbia College received during the Tradition Meets Tomorrow Campaign, the college was able to construct a new science building, obtain new teaching equipment, award scholarships to students across the country and create new centers to further assist them on their educational journey.

The Brouder Science Center The Gerald T. and Bonnie M. Brouder Science Center was a highlight of the Campaign. Deepening and strengthening the sciences was one of Brouder’s main goals of his presidency, and he saw the culmination of that accomplishment in the dedication of the building. It’s more than just a building, though. Within the walls of the Brouder Science Center, various areas are waiting to be discovered. Through the generous contributions of donors, the college was able to include nursing and crime simulation labs, biology and chemistry labs, a large lecture hall, student study areas and more all in one beautiful building. Forty-five areas in the building are named for donors.

14

Columbia College Annual Report 2014

Scholarships One of the largest areas of support was scholarships at Columbia College. The mission statement of the college includes seven values, the first of which is student centrism. Our donors embraced that value during the Campaign. Scholarships were created for criminal justice and forensic science students, for English students, for female students, for active-duty and veteran students, for students from Missouri and for students at Nationwide Campuses — just to name a few. Read more about scholarships and awards at the college in this issue of the Annual Report. Learn about the establishment of the Col. Mike Randerson Scholarship on page 18, the transformational contributions of college faculty and staff on page 20, Professor Barry Langford’s gift to the Mock Trial Award on page 22 and the deep meaning behind the creation of the Jessica D. Lee ’12 Memorial Scholarship on page 26.

15

Columbia College Annual Report 2014

New buildings and centers Although the science center is one of the well-known accomplishments of the Campaign, donors also helped create other buildings and centers around the college. For instance, Columbia College-Rolla moved to a beautiful new campus thanks to a property donation. Columbia College constructed a new fitness and

recreation center where athletes practice and where students, staff and faculty exercise. The college also created a center dedicated to servicing the unique needs of veterans and an entrepreneurship center for innovative students to bolster their business skills.

Other impact Housed in the nursing simulation lab in the Brouder Science Center is SimMan, a simulated patient that speaks, cries, moves and responds to treatment. Funded by charitable donors, SimMan allows nursing students to participate in a realistic training experience. Donors also granted the college gifts that were unrestricted. Web Bixby ’82, a Columbia College trustee who donated $568,000 to the Campaign, says none of the gifts he’s given to the college have been restricted, allowing the college to determine where to allocate the funds. “I think the school has the knowledge to know where to best use the funds and where they will do the most benefit,” he says. Wherever a gift was given, donors have changed the college for the better and continued to lead it on a path of becoming a model institution. The impact that donors have on Columbia College is impossible to quantify. Together, more than 5,000 donors gave more than 39,000 gifts totaling $11.3 million to the college, and that generosity is shown every day on every campus. From the college to each of you — thank you.

Kindred Spirits Col. Mike Randerson and Mary McCleary Posner share a deep connection to the college

Before they became deeply affiliated with Columbia College, Col. Mike Randerson and Mary McCleary Posner would travel to Whiteman Air Force Base for military events, and instead of listening to music or the radio during the drives, they talked about many things — why Randerson served in the Air Force, why Posner supported the military and overall why they do what they do. But they also had meaningful discussions about what was important in life. It was through these conversations that they discovered they were kindred spirits, as Randerson describes it; a matched set, Posner says. “I was immediately struck by Mary because she was so passionate and dedicated to something that I was passionate about and dedicated to,” Randerson says. Posner says she learned that they held the same values, adding, “Mike and I just hit it off, and that has never altered in all those years.” The trips cemented Randerson and Posner’s friendship, and the two have been working in tandem since 1992 to support servicemembers, veterans and their families. Randerson was the commander of the Air Force ROTC in Columbia, Missouri, and Posner was — and still is — a civic leader in the community and the chairman and founder of the Memorial Day Weekend Salute to Veterans Corporation, an organization dedicated to honoring all active-duty servicemembers and veterans. When Randerson retired from the military, he took the job as vice president for Adult Higher Education at Columbia College, and he and Posner continued to enjoy a relationship of mutual respect and admiration. Their first foray into fundraising for the college began when they worked together on creating the Col. Charles E. McGee Scholarship. Randerson believed McGee, a veteran of three wars, a Tuskegee Airman and a 1978 alumnus, was a genuine national hero deserving of a scholarship. Posner agreed, and the fund was formed. Subsequently, Posner had another thought: Randerson deserved a scholarship, too. On Sept. 10, 2013, the college announced a scholarship would be established to honor the legacy of Randerson, who had recently announced his intent to retire from the college after 18 years of service. Posner took on the role of chairing the fundraising effort, and just 43 days later, the Col. Mike Randerson Scholarship was endowed. 18

Initially, Randerson expressed reluctance at having a scholarship in his name, insisting there were many true heroes more worthy of recognition. But Posner persuaded him with a few cleverly crafted words. “I started out saying ‘You are worthy,’ and all of the reasonable and rational things that you can say to convince someone they ought to be doing this,” she says, but she knew he would still say no. “So, then I said, ‘Being a vehicle for good is a responsibility. When you can be a vehicle for good, then you should do it.’ I stopped him cold with that.” The scholarship supports military students and military spouses and dependents. Though the scholarship is in Randerson’s name and recognizes the work he’s done for Columbia College — including the addition of 18 AHE campuses and 14,000 AHE students during his tenure — Randerson says the scholarship celebrates the hard work of hundreds of people who have helped the college grow in the military sector. Ultimately, though, the scholarship pays tribute to military members and their families who sacrifice each and every day. “The bottom line is they are so truly worthy of support, and they are working so hard to achieve this education while having a lot of challenges that the average citizen does not have,” Randerson says. The realization of those hardships and the passionate desire to support servicemembers is what brought Randerson and Posner together in the beginning and is what strengthens their relationship to this day. “Supporting the military is about supporting the men and women who answered the call to service and their families,” Randerson says. “Mary understands that piece of it, and that’s why we’re such kindred spirits.”

Through daily work and generous contributions, faculty and staff change students’ lives

One day each year, Columbia College-Jefferson City halts classes to pack the halls for a “big check” presentation. It’s not a huge ceremony, Kristen Anderson, administrative assistant for retention, admits. But everyone is excited, and there’s a sense of community as students receive checks for scholarships they worked so hard to earn. There’s also a sense of gratitude flowing through the crowd as the faculty and staff are recognized for their generosity. “This isn’t some random person’s money,” Anderson, who graduated from the college in 2009, says. “This is from the people who are surrounding you, teaching you, working on the staff with you. I know that for them it means a lot to see the students succeed with their funds.” Of the $11.3 million that the Tradition Meets Tomorrow Campaign raised, $1.2 million was contributed by Columbia College faculty and staff members. The transformational gift — the second of two toward the Campaign — came from employees from all departments and campuses of the college. Carol Mahurin Senior transcripts specialist, main campus

Carol Mahurin began working at the college as a housekeeper on the main campus in 1992. When a student left his or her dorm room, she would clean the area before they returned. “I thought it was neat to be able to take care of something so awesome,” she says. More than 20 years later, Mahurin has worked her way from housekeeping to the switchboard and the business office, and eventually to the Office of the Registrar. Since then, she’s been taking care of the college through her work, time and gifts. In 1997, Mahurin began giving to the Jane Froman Memorial Scholarship. Her daughter, Rebecca Bennett, who is the administrative assistant for Campus Safety, has a lovely singing voice, Mahurin says. Inspired, she began donating to encourage those who are musically gifted, but also to support the college she’s been with for so many years. “I think of this as my home,” Mahurin says. “The way I feel about the school – that’s why I do it.”

Jim & Stacy Rowlett Adjunct instructors, St. Louis campus

Jim and Stacy Rowlett have seen themselves, their marriage and their students grow over the time they’ve been at the college. Jim graduated from Columbia College–St. Louis in 2000 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and began teaching online classes for the college a year later. Stacy graduated with the same degree in 2007 and just celebrated her one-year teaching anniversary with the college. They donate to the Dr. Charles W. Kullmann Scholarship, which provides for students at the St. Louis campus who have volunteered time for community service. “We’re big supporters of volunteering,” Jim says. “But also, scholarships can be the deciding factor of somebody staying in school, and my reward is seeing students that I’ve had for two, three, four or five years graduate.” The St. Louis campus is close-knit, the Rowletts say, and the scholarships are validation of students’ hard work. Seeing the direct impact strengthens their deep desire to give back to the college through teaching and through scholarships. “If we can impact more students in these positive ways, the school is stronger for it,” Stacy says.

Becky Bocklage Director, Jefferson City campus

One person’s success feeds another’s, Becky Bocklage believes. She received scholarships that helped pay for her education, and now in a position to return the favor, she and her husband, who graduated from the college in 2012, have created a scholarship to assist students who will, in turn, do the same. The Joe and Becky Bocklage Scholarship will go to an undergraduate or graduate student at the Jefferson City campus. “We felt like we were living a pretty good life because we received help from others when we needed it,” she says. “Now we’re investing in someone who’s going to invest back into the community. It’s part of being a member of a society that you come full circle and become the donors. ” Not only does she bolster the college through her own scholarship, but Bocklage also handwrites individual thank-you notes to each adjunct faculty member who gives, because she believes they deserve recognition for giving money from their own pocket to help the students. “Across all campuses, the faculty and staff give because they have a heart for education and for providing it to people,” Bocklage says. “It’s very personal. They want to help the students.”

Setting a Precedent Professor Barry Langford ensures the Mock Trial team will continue

Established by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, Law Day occurs on May 1 each year to honor the role of law in the United States. On this year’s Law Day, Columbia College celebrated by announcing Barry Langford, assistant professor of criminal justice and founding director of the college’s Mock Trial team, had given $111,000 in a combination of a bequest and outright gifts to support the Mock Trial Award and scholarships for criminal justice and forensic science students. The gift accounts for nearly 10 percent of the transformational gift from faculty and staff, and Langford, who has given a total of $121,000 to the college, is the only faculty member to give a leadership gift to the Campaign. Langford started the Mock Trial program at the college in 1997 and says his gift creates provisions that will ensure the program continues long after he’s gone. “Mock Trial has been described by students as a transformative learning experience,” he says. “Work in a Mock Trial case can be useful in any career, and students learn skills that will benefit them for the rest of their lives.” Rachel Payton ’03, deputy state director for the Missouri chapter of Americans for Prosperity, says the leadership, research and public speaking skills she learned in Mock Trial laid a foundation for her career. Not to mention, the students gained confidence in their abilities when they traveled to face opponents such as Duke University, University of Southern California and Washington University. “Columbia College is known around the nation for Mock Trial, and it’s all due to Barry, honestly,” says Jared Vessell ’00, who now works as an attorney in Columbia, Missouri. “He is a building block for the program.” Both Payton and Vessell have continued to be involved with Mock Trial even after graduation. Payton judges tournaments, and Vessell has helped chaperone trips and coordinate judges, an under-

taking that earned him the alumni service award in 2013. With this gift, they agree, hopefully others will recognize the worth of Mock Trial and begin supporting it as well. “Any chance to recognize people for what they’ve done and the accomplishments they’ve made, whatever they are, that’s always important,” Payton says. “And if you can somehow help them pay for their schooling in the process, I think that’s even better.” Affording college seems to get harder and harder with an added burden for those pursuing careers in criminal justice or forensic science because many take jobs as public servants starting off, which doesn’t draw a high salary, Langford says. For students aspiring to law school, they might be able to earn a good income later, but they also have three more expensive years of school left. So, Langford believes anything that can make things a little easier is important — and he sees the rewards of his donation through friendships with former students. “I enjoy staying in touch with students, and I do take pride in their accomplishments later,” he says. “I don’t have a preconceived road map of where they should end up other than to say I hope they are successful and happy.”

A College Champion Web Bixby ’82 works tirelessly to instill a culture of philanthropy

A high school-aged Web Bixby was trying to decide where to go to college. He knew about Columbia College all along; his mom was an alumna, and his dad was on the board of trustees. But, he says he didn’t get any pressure from his family to attend the college. He just knew he didn’t want to go to a big university, and with one step onto the campus in Columbia, Missouri, he found a home. “With college and kids, it comes down to fit,” Bixby says. “The student will know when he’s found a place that he will like. That’s what happened to me with Columbia College.” Bixby, a Columbia College trustee and chair of the National Campaign Steering Committee for the Tradition Meets Tomorrow Campaign, developed such a personal relationship with the college that he became dedicated to the cause. He — and the rest of the committee — worked not only to lead the largest fundraising campaign in college history, but also to instill a culture of philanthropy. A 1982 alumnus, Bixby became a trustee in 1990 when he went to an NAIA men’s basketball tournament game where the Cougars were playing for the national championship. Dr. Donald Ruthenberg, former Columbia College president, asked him to join, and though Bixby already had an affinity for the college, the moment sparked his interest in athletics. More than 20 years later, Bixby has chaired the athletics committee on the board of trustees and has has been an honorary coach for the men’s basketball team 16 times. “Web is a gracious and vocal supporter of the college,” says Bob Burchard, athletic director and men’s basketball head coach. “Over the years, I have witnessed his consistent, unwavering and active participation in the success of our institution. He is an avid, generous and enthusiastic partner of his alma mater.” Bixby says his time at the college and on the board of trustees has helped him mature, and he credits a lot of that to the people he’s met along the way. In fact, it is an important reason why he has continued to be connected with the college for so long.

24

“There are some really, really good people on the board of trustees,” Bixby says. “I like being with them, I like seeing them, I like being around them, I like challenging them, and I like them challenging me.” He says he enjoys the people at all levels of the college, too, including faculty, staff, alumni and students. “I’m still involved with the college because of the people, up and down, across the board.” Just as people of the college bond, the Campaign brought together many different areas of support. The name, Tradition Meets Tomorrow, married the history of the college to the future. “Tradition” honored the college’s time as Christian College, as well as the momentous changes, such as becoming co-ed and the addition of adult and online education. “Tomorrow” looked to the significance of education and how it defines what tomorrow will be. With his position as chair of the steering committee, Bixby took the mission of the Campaign and his leadership role to heart. He gave to the Campaign at the beginning in January 2010 and again at the campaign celebration in September 2014, donating a total of $568,000. “The important thing that came out of the steering committee, more than anything else, was that we tried to set the tone of this culture of philanthropy,” Bixby says. “We had a purpose, a desire and a mission. We really set a tone.”

In Memory of The Jessica D. Lee ’12 Memorial Scholarship provides opportunities for single mothers

Jessica Lee had 12 tattoos. “Live, laugh, love” on the back of her neck. Her son’s name on her foot and also down her calf, spelling out “Elyjah.” Butterflies near her collarbone and a red ribbon with the word “Fighter” on her side. They weren’t superfluous tattoos inked on a whim. Each one had significance to Jessica, and she “lived a lot of life for 23,” says her dad, Mike Lee. A fondness for tattoos must run in the family. Mike has a portrait of Jessica and Elyjah on his upper arm. Jessica’s mom, Michelle Lee, has butterflies matching her daughter’s on her calf, one representing Jessica and another for Elyjah. Julia Lee has her sister’s name tattooed on the inside of her arm along with a red ribbon and the word “Fighter” – just like Jessica’s. Julia’s boyfriend, Kelby, has a similar tattoo for Elyjah, only his says “Little Man” in honor of the nickname he gave him.

“Columbia College gave Jessica an opportunity to stand on her own two feet and raise a child, so creating the scholarship to help others just seemed like the right thing to do.” — Mike Lee

The Lee family uses these tattoos to remember Jessica, who graduated from Columbia College-Fort Leonard Wood in 2012, and her son, Elyjah. The mother and son died in a tragic accident in Waynesville, Missouri, when the car Jessica was driving was swept away in a flash flood. To ensure their memory lasts even longer than a tattoo can, the Lees created the Jessica D. Lee ’12 Memorial Scholarship, which will be awarded to single mothers who are enrolled full-time at the Fort Leonard Wood campus. “If I have to find the positive in this situation, it’s the scholarship,” says Mike, who graduated from the Fort Leonard Wood campus in 2002. “Columbia College gave Jessica an opportunity to stand on her own two

feet and raise a child, so creating the scholarship to help others just seemed like the right thing to do.” Jessica lived with her parents for a few years after Elyjah was born. During the day, she worked at the daycare Elyjah attended, then went to class at night while her family took care of him. She had a built-in support system in her family – Mike, Michelle, Julia and Justin, her brother – which is something a lot of single moms don’t have, they say. The Lee family created the scholarship in the hopes that women who don’t have the support that Jessica did will be able to worry less about spending on tuition and books. “Everyone should have a chance like that,” Michelle says. “You can succeed on your own, but it’s just so important for us that single moms know that there is help out there and that there are people who do believe in you.” The scholarship is also meant to give back to the community that supported the family after the tragedy. In fact, Mike says, it was the community’s idea to put on an event that raised more than $4,000 for the scholarship because so many people wanted a way to contribute. “You can tell the community doesn’t want us to feel alone,” Julia says. The Lees say they are grateful for the support from Columbia College, too. Mike Siegel, director of the Fort Leonard Wood campus, attended the fundraiser, something that Julia said makes her proud to attend the college. The Student Senate at the campus made t-shirts with a Cougar paw print on them and are selling the shirts for $10, all proceeds of which will go to the scholarship. Columbia College has been in the family for years. Jessica received her bachelor’s degree in psychology. Mike graduated with his bachelor’s degree and was able to become an officer in the military because of it. Julia is a current student studying early childhood

education. Mike says not going to college was never an option for his children. Education affected his life so greatly that he tried to ensure his children knew how much it can provide. “I was afforded the opportunity to go to college and managed to get a degree, and it made a huge difference in the quality of life and the opportunities for my family,” Mike says. “And that school and that degree did the same thing for Jessica.” The Lees wanted to make sure betterment of life was available to other single moms as well. Jessica was working to provide the best life for Elyjah, and they had an extremely close relationship. They were so attached at the hip that their shared headstone says “Together Forever.” It was a struggle, raising a child alone, but she did it, and she did it well, Michelle says. Jessica would have loved the idea of the scholarship to support single moms. “It’s OK, because there is light at the end of the tunnel,” Michelle says. “This is such a positive thing. I hope it’s something that lives on and on and on so Julia’s kids can see it, and my son’s kids can see it. It just means a lot to us, it does. Over the years, all the things will change in town. The bridge will be redone sooner or later; everything will be revamped as the years go on, but this is something that will keep going. And it will go as long as I’m around, as long as Mike’s around, as long as our kids are around. We’ll make sure it keeps going.” Top left: Julia Lee, Jessica’s sister, is a current student at Columbia College. Mike Lee, Jessica’s dad, graduated in 2002. With Heart and Soul Trustee Jolene Marra Schulz ’61 dedicates her life to education

Jolene Marra Schulz’s first experience with Christian College was when she visited the campus while she was still in high school. There for the weekend, she was paired with a current student and returned home completely “sold” on the college. Schulz was the first person in her immediate family to attend college, and she says it was both exciting and scary. It was especially difficult to leave her parents and her hometown of Bevier, Missouri. “When you come from a small town like Bevier, you think at that time that the entire world is like Bevier,” Schulz says. “And Christian College took a little girl from the country into the big city of Columbia, Missouri!” She might have come from a small town, but Schulz has done a lot of big things for the Columbia College community and the city of Columbia. A 1961 alumna, Schulz is now a member of the board of trustees and constantly gives back to the college that she says laid the foundation for her life.

“Jolene is a dependable and dedicated friend. Anything she does, she gives of herself completely. She is just a true-blue friend, one of my dearest, oldest and best friends. We’ll be friends forever.” — Sharon Niday Ronchetto ’61

College wasn’t easy in the beginning for Schulz. In the first six weeks, she told her mother multiple times that she wanted to come home. But her mother, who jokingly claims part of Schulz’s degree because of all the times she drove from Bevier to see her, convinced Schulz to stay. “My mom would always say, ‘Tell you what, honey. You’ve only got a few more days until the weekend. Why don’t you try until the weekend?’ And unbeknownst to

30

me, she was actually very upset at the same time because I was the only child, and I was away. But she helped make the transition good for me, because she always provided an incentive for me to stay.” Her parents likely sent her to Christian College partly because there was a strict curfew of 8:30 p.m. on weekdays. If a student made the dean’s list, the next semester she could stay out until 9:30 p.m. There were many rules that students today would scoff at. Christian College students had to have permission to leave campus. There were lists of clothes required and of clothes not allowed, and there was absolutely no drinking alcohol. “People always ask me, ‘Why didn’t you rebel?’” Schulz laughs. “I didn’t know any different. I thought it was great.” “I didn’t like it,” adds her husband, Bill Schulz, whom she met while she was attending Christian College. After curfew, he used to drive by Hughes Hall in a convertible yelling, “Jolene, come out! Jolene, can you come out?” “I was so embarrassed,” she says. Part of what helped her make it through rough patches of homesickness and studying stress was the ability to connect with her roommates, classmates and professors during her two years at the college. Most of the women were from small communities in various states, and there was such a level of caring for each other that made the transition easy. The women had a strong bond with each other as well as the school itself, says Sharon Niday Ronchetto ’61. She and Schulz met at Christian College, roomed together when they were both teachers in Overland Park, Kansas, and are still friends to this day. Because of the size of the

school – and the rules that kept them on campus – the women created deep connections that held. “Jolene is a dependable and dedicated friend,” Ronchetto says. “Anything she does, she gives of herself completely. She is just a true-blue friend, one of my dearest, oldest and best friends. We’ll be friends forever.” Professional life Schulz always wanted to be a teacher. The first thing she remembers asking Santa for is a chalkboard and chalk to enhance the lessons she had her cousins complete during playtime. During the summers in college, Schulz started a youth program at the public library in Macon, Missouri. Twice a week, she would read to the children while illustrating the story using felt boards with flannel characters. Her experiences working with children, along with her time at Christian College, cemented the idea that she was on the right path. “At college, you come into being as your own person,” Schulz says. “It reinforced the fact that education was my choice, and it was a good choice.” She received her bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Missouri in 1963. After teaching elementary students for four years in Shawnee Mission, Kansas, Schulz returned to Missouri. In 1970, she

32

married Bill and started working on her master’s degree at the University of Missouri while employed as the lab school supervisor. Soon after, she began working at Columbia Public Schools, where she would stay for the next 34 years. Schulz taught kindergarten for a few years before moving into administration. She worked as the director of the Missouri Facilitator Center, director of the Missouri Education Center and as the director of school and community programs before she retired in 2005. One of the longstanding programs Schulz started was Partners in Education. The goal of Partners in Education is to get the community involved with the school system. The program began with 11 partners and now has more than 300. The idea for the program came from Dr. Russell Thompson, former superintendent of Columbia Public Schools. He says Schulz had all the qualities necessary for a task such as this: her personality, her dedication to education and her passion for helping children. “Jolene is a professional educator,” Thompson says. “Truly an outstanding educator. She was the obvious person to fill that role, and she took the idea and the vision and ran with it further than I thought it could go. Jolene is a credit to Columbia Public Schools and the broader Columbia community.” Along with her hard work at Columbia Public Schools, Schulz took time to teach EDUC 201, Foundations of Education, as an adjunct instructor at Columbia College for three years. She says she worked on structuring the class so the students would

Columbia College Annual Report 2014

have a good picture of what it’s like to actually be in a classroom. This was important to her, because her goal was to convey the importance of education. “Education is the key,” Schulz says. “If you turn the key, it opens up the door to the world. Where you go with it is up to you.” Giving back to the college Schulz became involved with the college the minute she returned to Missouri in 1970 by joining the Columbia College Alumni Association. One of her first tasks was calling Christian College alumnae to inform them of the name change to Columbia College as well as the addition of men on campus. The women were so upset that such a stark change was being made to “their” school that they hung up on Schulz and the other callers and swore to never again donate to or be involved with the college. Schulz says it was both funny and shocking when it happened, but now she understands where they were coming from. The school was where women not only studied but also learned the social graces and became mature young ladies. “I think that generation we were calling was fearful that wouldn’t happen again,” Schulz says. “And it didn’t, but the world was changing, and sometimes change is hard.” For her dedication to the college and the community, Schulz received the Columbia College Community Service Award in 1996, which recognizes outstanding leadership and service to the citizens of one’s community. In 2001, Schulz joined the Columbia College Board of Trustees after Dan Scotten, former chair of the board of trustees, asked her to become a member. She now chairs the educational policies committee, which she says is the pulse of what’s going on at the college. Changes in programs, new curriculum, new departments and new faculty all come through the committee, and then are presented to the board for approval. She serves on the board of trustees because she believes it’s another way to give back to the college — and Schulz takes that seriously. She looks at her role on the board of trustees as a responsibility to help expand and better the college. Scotten says Schulz often works behind the scenes and supports the college in quiet ways of which people are not aware. “Of all the people I know, Jolene has the most feelings and heart for Christian and Columbia College,” Scotten

Above: Schulz, left, lived with Lynn Phelps, Susie Wrinker Cox and Gail Tiano Lawrence on the third floor of Hughes Hall in 1960.

says. “She loves the institution, always has, and I knew she would be a valuable leader through the future.” Her involvement with Columbia College goes even deeper than her time volunteering and her service as a trustee. Schulz has consistently given generous donations to the college, the most recent being a transformational gift to the Campaign announced in September 2013. When she retired from Columbia Public Schools, as a gift, the community established the Jolene Schulz Scholarship, which provides for students from Boone or Macon counties. Schulz and her husband continue to supplement the fund. Schulz donates for the same reason she serves on the board of trustees: to give back to the college that she says gave so much to her. Christian College laid the foundation for Schulz’s life, and she wouldn’t be who she is today without it, she says. At the college, she grew up, learned about the world outside of Bevier, Missouri, and became her own person. Schulz says all the things she did as a young woman at Christian College are a part of everything she’s done in her life, and she feels honored to be able to give back. “It’s hard to explain to people the love and passion that you have for a school that means so much to you,” Schulz says. “But it is indeed a wonderful place, and it is a place that I will treasure for the rest of my life.”

Did You Know? Dr. Scott Dalrymple vowed that as the 17th president of Columbia College, he and his wife, Tina, would pour themselves into the college. He’s already presided over a commencement and visited nearly half of the Nationwide Campuses, but he’s also immersed himself in philanthropy, too. The Dalrymples joined the President’s Society with a $10,000 pledge to support the inauguration festivities, including the purchase of a year’s worth of textbooks for a student who defeated him in a video game challenge.

Did You Know? The network of campuses across the United States is a testament to our commitment to serve the underserved. And our donors are committed, too. Over the course of the Tradition Meets Tomorrow Campaign, they gave nearly $2 million to Adult Higher Education, which celebrated 40 years of educating adult learners at its first Nationwide Campus in St. Louis in August 2013.
