Simplifying sustainability

S

orry Kermit the Frog, it turns out it is easy to be green. Building an energy efficient home can be a whole lot simpler, and a good deal more affordable, than many people might assume. When Cam Gillies and Renee Franken started planning their environmentally sustainable “green” home in Windermere four years ago, they found that basic design decisions made early on in the process make the biggest difference, and did not need to come with a huge price tag. “Everybody asks about cost. People can get distracted by bells and whistles, but the simple stuff is the most important and the most affordable,” said Cam. For Cam and Renee, the basics of an energy efficient home include three key features — super insulation; high quality windows; and sealing the home really well. For super insulation, the couple built their R44 walls 12 inches

wide, which is double the minimum insulation required by the building code. When it came to windows, the ones they installed are triplepaned with argon fill. (Triple pane windows cost 10 to 15 percent more than double pane windows, but have 50 per cent better performance). And as for sealing the home, the couple adopted a keen focus on detail. “We paid a lot of attention to sealing things up. It's pretty much airtight,” said Cam. It sounds easy, and in many ways it was. He estimates these three features account for 10 per cent of the planning decisions that the couple made, but affect 90 per cent of the house's total energy consumption. “Those steps are all really inexpensive and it's now paying dividends for us. We have way lower energy bills,” Cam said, adding their new house is twice the size of their old house, but the family's energy costs are now 40 per cent lower. He initially expected to recoup much of the extra cost of the sustainable design in eight to 10 years, but says some parts of the design (the super insulated walls, for instance) have likely already been paid for in reduced energy costs. “On top of that, the new house is much more comfortable,” said Cam. “I can't imagine living in a house that's not like this. It makes so much sense even just from a financial perspective. Add on to that the environmental responsibility to do the right thing, and it's a no-brainer.” Other green features in the house include a solar hot water system (which provides 60 per cent of the family's hot water each year); a rainwater collection system (for irrigation and toilet flushing); a drain water heat recovery unit; use of low volatile organic compound (VOC) glues throughout the house; using concrete made of fly ash blended with Portland cement (instead of pure

Portland cement); and a heat recovery ventilator (HRV) that provides fresh air for the family's airtight home while expelling stale indoor air without mixing the two (warmth captured from the outgoing air is transferred to heat the incoming air). The end result is a home that will last at least 100 years, quite possibly longer. The old house that stood on the lot before was so poorly insulated that Cam and Renee decided to tear it down and start fresh. The couple spent six months intensively researching sustainable design before even beginning to build, and continued to do more research throughout the construction process, but said much credit goes to the builders, Collective Carpentry. The local company, owned by three valley residents, is on the leading edge of sustainable design, according to Cam, and has since gone on to build even more energy efficient homes elsewhere in the valley. Homeowners who don't want to build a new home from the ground up can still make their existing home more energy efficient with renovations by focusing on the same three key features that Cam and Renee did. “For anybody doing a renovation — be it renewing siding, adding windows, or reshingling — any opportunity to add insulation, take it. It's really cheap and the savings start right away,” Cam said. With a home that will last a century, it's clear that being green is not just easy, but also downright smart.

t’s our passion that really drives this business,” says Jessie Blakley, while gesturing toward the Cross Roads Collective woodcraft studio. The scent of freshly cut wood drifts out of the workshop as her husband and business partner, Maxime Perrin, marks off the areas of a burled tree trunk he plans to transform into a custom vanity. Maxime smiles while lowering his safety glasses; and the whirr of a saw begins to sound immediately as he makes the first cut on this job. Meanwhile, Jessie thoughtfully moves out of the studio and walks through a doorway into the Cross Roads Collective artisan gallery that features handmade pieces from up to 50 woodworking artists at any given time. The entrepreneurial duo opened Perrin Structure & Design Inc. (advertised to the left) — a custom homebuilding company — in 2008. By 2012, they clearly saw a demand to carve out a custom experience for homeowners, renovators and builders alike by supplying artistic decor items with their existing architectural services. This led to the creation of the Cross Roads Collective (CRC) woodcraft gallery and studios. “The homes and projects we design and build are a direct reflection of our clients' unique family personalities. So adding heartwarming artistic architectural elements such as timber stairs, railings, mantels and decorative timbers is a sound investment. Being able to create decor items that perfectly reflect their unique style and home gives us an edge here at the CRC,” said Jessie. Custom woodworking projects from the Collective range from custom live-edge furniture, bar tops and landey scaping elements to grand timber inukshuks. “Whatever our clients can dream up — really!” she added. They also create custom signage in-house. “There’s inspiration all around us,” Jessie explained. “The pursuit for beautiful and unique pieces of wood takes us all over B.C., anything that has character. From there we dry them and ss Ma

wait for someone to fall in love with them, whether it becomes a utilitarian or artistic piece. A wall hanging or the perfect dining room table, your imagination is the only limit.” Each unique piece that the CRC team creates is meant to evoke a certain emotion for the viewer. “Whether it is the crisp clean feeling of modern pieces or a rustic down home feel, everyone has a different emotion they want to experience in a room,” she said. “We can create statement pieces or renovate an entire home to help create that feeling, which is ultimately my passion… helping families correctly achieve that per- pg fect look is what 13 makes my job so rewarding!!” The shop’s unique products and services have fulfilled a niche market in the valley — there is a consistent demand for what the designers and artists at Cross Roads Collective can tackle for clients. In the summer time, the team focuses on the gallery and begins design plans for the winter months. As the cold sets in they focus on completing renovations and fulfilling orders taken in the summer. “We stay busy all year long this way, it works really well,” Jessie said. “The demand for furniture is also really growing. People realize that local and handmade products are valuable in many ways. Being able to pass a piece on from generation to generation and moving away from throwaway items holds moral value. The support for our products is helping achieve local prosperity. We use local materials, suppliers and talent and every sale made supports our growing economy here in the Columbia Valley.” The Cross Roads Collective is open between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. from Tuesday to Saturday weekly. It is located beside Tim Hortons on Highway 93/95. For more information about the Cross Roads Collective, call 250-688-0061 or email jessie@thecrossroadscollective.ca. After

A traditional log home…

transformed

n August 2014, I was invited, along with my contractors, to meet with the new owners of a very unique 40-year-old log home at Panorama Mountain Resort. They outlined their proposed renovation project: add a mud room onto the side, add new walls, take away some walls, build a new fireplace, re-roof, re-side, build new decks, install new windows, and renovate throughout, including a new kitchen, bathrooms and flooring. This was all within the scope of other renovations we had taken on, but then the conversation took a turn to the wild side. The homeowners asked what we thought about blowing out the second floor over the living room to create cathedral ceilings? Then they mentioned that the colour palette they wanted for their home was a combination of light pine logs with soft blues and greys (a dramatic change from the original burnt orange). They also wanted to see a blend of rustic, modern and industrial for the décor. Okay, nothing complicated about that… then came the kicker — a really fast timeline! At this point, most sensible contractors and designers would have run, but eight months later we were almost done and the home is now a stunning blend of barnboard, timber, pale pine logs, commercial stainless steel appliances, ultra modern fixtures and faucets, marble countertops, a soapstone fireplace, modern light fixtures, rustic light fixtures, industrial elements and

soaring ceilings. Cut a hole in the roof in January, pop a proper barn cupola Select small on top and away you accessories go... we did! provided by The kitchen is an Three Bears entertainer’s dream. and Ambiente. Triple the size of the old kitchen, it features a 13-foot long island, acres of perimeter cabinets and countertops, commercial appliances, plenty of island seating, and even a TV in the corner to take in European World Cup racing after a day on the home slopes. The choice of cabinet colour was inspired by the giant icicle that forms alongside the road to Panorama every winter. While lower cabinets are painted a charcoal grey colour, a completely unexpected hit of vivid turquoise blue on the upper cabinets contrasts beautifully with the stainless appliances and marble countertops. The new energy efficient woodburning fireplace faced in soapstone slabs for a clean, modern look keeps not only the main floor warm, but heats the second floor as well, and is ducted to send excess heat into the basement below.

In the ski room with its rustic wood walls, skis can be sharpened, tuned and waxed in a jiffy under galvanized barnlight pendants. Then after a day on the slopes, the homeowners have the choice of a steam, a sauna or, coming soon, a soak in an outdoor hot tub. The best part? Every weekend over the winter was full of surprises for the homeowners as they got to see what was accomplished in the previous week. Design your outdoor space L

andscaping serves a crucial purpose in providing aesthetically pleasing qualities to a property that increase both its market value and overall appeal. For 16 years, Rick Ferrier has owned and operated Ferrier Water & Landscaping, and has designed and constructed many Columbia Valley outdoor spaces from dream into reality. Specializing in creative waterscapes, landscapes, nature-scapes and garden designs, there is not much his company can’t do in the way of landscape artistry. Regardless of whether a project is a waterscape, xeriscape or landscape, most often the goal for Ferrier Water & Landscaping is to create a space that is as natural looking as possible. For this reason, the materials used in the construction are critical. Plant material typically features native plant species such as junipers, dogwood, and buffaloberries. For waterscaping, Rick pg

prefers angular rock. He also looks for rock that has a moss and lichen covering because this best mimics what would be found in the forest. For xeriscaping (landscaping that reduces the need for supplemental water from irrigation), native plant material is used with finer bark mulch that mimics the forest floor, to hold in moisture. Xeriscaping was surging in popularity a couple years ago, but has since cooled off. Despite lower maintenance costs, the chief reason for this, Rick notes, is that “people realized that with a ‘natural’ look comes ‘natural’ weeds and can eventually look run down after a period of time; especially if xeriscaping is not done correctly.” To correctly construct a xeriscaped space, Rick suggests the use of a fabric barrier underneath the mulch base and the use of an irrigation system with drip emitters. Irrigation may seem counter-intuitive with what xeriscaping is trying to Aesthetic, Effective, Accessible Architectural Design achieve, but it is important because it acts as an insurance policy for the plant’s long-term health. At Ferrier Water & Landscaping, key considerations for landscaping, waterscaping and xeriscaping draw parallels. No matter what the project is, there needs to be a purpose for what the client wants to create. One client, a professional artist, wanted the sound of running water. The sound was conducive to the client’s creativity, so a waterscape featuring a trickling creek was the perfect solution. According to Rick, what's also important in landscape design is matching personality characteristics to a landscaping theme that evokes an agreeable emotion from within, effectively communicating his clients' personalities through the design. For each project, Ferrier Water & Landscaping passionately looks to take an outdoor space to the next level. Ultimately, this means upgrading an outdoor space Architectural Technologist & Journeyman Carpenter so that is more appealing, efficient, and Over 20 years designing, drafting & building homes practical. reat product selection and great customer service are just some of the many reasons to visit the 3,000 square foot showroom of The Home Renovation Centre — a unique, "one-stop shop" brick and mortar destination for the renovation enthusiast. For owners David and Genevieve Ridge, who have had the showroom for over six years now, dedication and professionalism related to their craft are evident in the culture of hard work that surrounds them. The showroom is a great place to get your mind working, either thinking of ideas for a possible renovation or a place to make decisions on products or services for a current real time project. In addition to David and Genevieve, Cheryl Dolph, the showroom manager, does an amazing job helping clients turn thoughts and ideas into real, visual design palettes. Following through with the other staff of skilled and multi-talented tradespeople allows our clients' visions to achieve outcomes that exceed expectations. The Home Renovation Centre has seemingly created a model that handily services the needs of a diverse client base in the Columbia Valley, offering ideas, design help, renovation products and countless services. Some of the products displayed in the showroom include, cabinetry, countertops, flooring, Shade-O-Matic window coverings and so much more. The many services offered include (but are not limited to) kitchen, bath and basement renovations and

most, if not all, indoor or outdoor renovations or upgrades. Here, the slogan of being a "one-stop shop" is so completely embraced, it provides professional comfort knowing you are being well-looked after. The showroom stays current with all new trends, but Genevieve adds, "at the end of the day, trends change and not all trends suit all people, and that's why listening to our customers about their likes is key in the decisionmaking process." Despite the ever-changing subtleties, what remains constant is the signature, modern rustic style that characterizes the homes of most clients. With slight variation through the years, "our clients nevertheless, want the best of both — the comfortable modern amenities, along with the look and feel of a classic rustic country theme," she says. The showroom is open five days a week to the public, however, David works outside these hours to often meet customers when it's convenient for them. The couple is quick to chuckle when pg recalling David's policy to answer his phone at any time — to a 17 fault: "even in the middle of a Sunday night family movie!"

he Upper Columbia Valley abounds with stunning mountain views, but few can match the vistas from The Springs Estates on The Springs Golf Course. The homes to be built on this new real estate development will allow residents to gaze right across the valley, from one mountain range to the other, while at the same time offering a panoramic view of the Wilmer Wetlands and a rear yard backing onto the golf course. Those with an affinity for nature, or golf, will be hard-pressed to find a better location and now, with the development's show home complete, there's a tantalizing glimpse of what's to come. “We chose to do a show home here to take advantage of the spectacular loca-

tion,” said New Dawn Developments coowner Rick Jensen. New Dawn is the exclusive builder for The Springs Estates and will soon be putting up other houses, all located within The Springs Estates development, as demand dictates. The company has gone to great lengths to keep a mountain home feel, using timber and other natural elements to promote a style that complements a golf course development. “I suppose you could call it a modern mountain style. Timber adds a rustic element to the modern design,” said Mr. Jensen. “The features of the home, aside from the timber on the interior and the exterior, include the open layout of the entire main level, the luxurious master bedroom and ensuite, the spacious recreation area, the huge decks that are both open and covered, and a two-car garage with a separate bay for a golf cart.” Both the main floor and the lower level of the show home have high ceilings and the home has a smart modern kitchen, complete with gorgeous cabinetry and sweeping large windows across the main level, which allows plenty of light to spill in. “What really impressed me when we decided to build the show home on this lot was the unencumbered vistas of the golf course, the wetlands and the mountains beyond. Now that it is complete, having that view framed by the wide open windows of the home is exceptional,” said Mr. Jensen. munity is within easy walking distance of the town centre of Radium Hot Springs and close to Kootenay National Park, the hot pools, and all the other outdoor amenities available in the valley. Radium and the valley have much to offer, proven by the influx of tourists and new homeowners. Residents and tourists alike enjoy golfing and all of the water sports, plus all of the winter activities in the area. Known as the “warm” side of the Rockies, the region experiences a milder climate, which allows for multiseasonal recreational activity. Just picture living in a home completely surrounded by a manicured golf course, with impeccable landscaping all around and feasting your eyes on the wilderness and mountains beyond — and anybody who builds on one of the lots will receive special privileges for both The Springs and The Radium golf courses. “We have architectural controls to keep the development unique. Building on one of the most prestigious courses in the area, it just seemed a logical approach,” said Radium Springs Estates sales and marketing manager Gerald Silbernagel. “It fits in with the mountains and the wetlands and we strive to keep that theme. We actually do get a fair amount of wildlife — bighorn sheep, deer and bald eagles — in this area, and that just adds to the natural experience.” Radium Springs Estates brings something new and exciting to the community and the development is one of kind in Radium, according to Mr. Silbernagel, adding that although it is high end and prestigious, building a home there can still be reasonably priced. “Radium Springs Resort is committed to continually improving the golf experience and serving the needs of all ages of prospective clients, from young families to retirees. Radium Springs has an exciting future and we invite you to preview our show homes and experience it with us. As well as New Dawn's show home, the Radium Springs Resort partners decided to build a second show home, which will be completed late summer,” he said, adding that anyone is welcome to come by and check them out. Artist profile:

L

iving in a valley nestled between Canada’s Rocky and Purcell Mountain Ranges gives glass artist Heather Cuell an interesting perspective on her own place in the world. The feeling of being dwarfed by her immediate surroundings continuously feeds her curiosity for the minutia of daily life — something borne within her as she grew up along Australia’s Queensland coast. “I’ve always looked at nature’s finer details, such as soil erosion. Part of growing up was visiting remote coastal areas, such as Fraser Island, where I would become enthralled by the wind-carved sands while watching the tides roll in and out,” she recalls about her upbringing. Now, Heather calls Invermere, B.C. home, where she not only owns and operates the Effusion Art Gallery + Glass Studio, which represents established and up-and-coming Canadian artists from coast to coast, but from which she also creates her own unique, designer, kiln-formed glass as well. In 1986, Heather left Australia with a backpack and her skis, intent on perfecting her downhill skills. But since first traipsing across Europe 28 years ago only to settle into her present Rocky Mountain

lifestyle, it is her artistry that she is now focusing on. After developing a thirst for creating sculptural and functional art, Heather gravitated toward kiln-formed glass through which she could explore and express her continued relationship with nature. The medium has been held in high repute as far back as the Bronze Age for its versatility, transparency, brilliance and reflection not found in other mediums. “Water is my muse. I am passionate about harmonizing nature’s colours and patterns within my art. My inspiration is often drawn from my observations of the effects that water has on sand, the unique layering of sedimentary rock and the distinctive characteristics of soil formations,” she explains, adding that, like water, she has to sometimes go with the flow as glass can be a very challenging medium. Of late, Heather has started to more deeply carve out her own niche throughout Pho Western Cantos b y St ada for her eph en L ebo custom-made vits sculptural

"I love creating and collaborating with clients who are looking for unique pieces, be they home owners, designers or architects — it’s all good to me!” Now celebrating its seventh year, the Effusion Art Gallery brings together a wide swathe of contemporary Canadian talent in various mediums. “It made sense to have other Canadian artists along side myself, to show just how versatile Canadian art could be," Heather said. "We are very fortunate to be in a position to discover and share such talent in our little town.” The gallery is a must-see stop when passing through the East Kootenay area.
