tying the knot in the columbia valley Everything you need to know to get married in British Columbia. How to obtain a marriage licence • You don’t have to be a B.C. resident to be married in this province. However, you are required to get a marriage licence in advance. • Anyone over 19 years of age is eligible to apply for a marriage licence in B.C. Anyone under 19 must first obtain the consent of both parents. • One or both members of the couple can go to the government agent’s office in Golden, Invermere or Cranbrook to apply for the licence. • The fee for a licence is $100. You need identification which confirms both of your full legal names, birth dates and places of birth. • The licence will be issued on the spot as long as all necessary identification is provided, and the licence is valid for three months. Marriage ceremony • In British Columbia, couples can choose a religious or civil ceremony, which must be witnessed by two people over the age of 18. • If you are planning a religious ceremony, you can choose a religious representative who must be registered with the Vital Statistics Agency. • If you are planning a civil ceremony, book a marriage commissioner registered with the Vital Statistics Agency as soon as you set your wedding date. Civil ceremonies may be conducted at any location. • Your commissioner will need to know the date, time and location of the wedding. You should also ask how they would like to be paid and when. Registering your marriage and marriage certificates • The marriage commissioner or religious representative will help complete the marriage registration form. Within 48 hours of the wedding ceremony, the form should be sent to the Vital Statistics Agency, where the marriage will be registered and a legal record will be kept. A legal marriage certificate will be mailed to you by the Vital Statistics Agency. • After marriage, you can choose whether to use your maiden name or switch to your spouse’s name at any time. Taking your spouse’s name does not result in a legal change of name or any automatic change to your identification records. In order to legally change your name, you have to apply for it legally.

A love grown locally Dave and Colleen

Photo by Dave Weatherhead and Colleen Shaw

When Colleen Shaw agreed to accompany her boyfriend, Dave Weatherhead, on an evening picnic overlooking the Columbia Wetlands, she wasn’t expecting to walk away with a fiancé. On a chilly Monday evening this past March, Dave took Colleen, his girlfriend of three years, to a hillside bluff with rolling views of the valley. They lit a campfire and sipped on wine from their packed picnic dinner before Dave set up the couple’s new camera on a tripod. The pair was playing with the camera and taking pictures of the view when Dave sneakily set the camera to take a series of consecutive photos, pulled Colleen into the frame, and knelt before her with a custom-made ring. A surprised Colleen gladly accepted Dave’s proposal, which was caught step-by-step on film. “I really wasn’t expecting it,” Colleen said. Dave admitted to mulling over a few different proposal ideas before settling on this one, which suited the outdoorloving couple perfectly. “I was just trying to think of a fun way to do it,” he said. “I picked up the ring from Fairmont Goldsmiths in Invermere on the Saturday, and planned to do it later in the week, but once I had the ring in my hand I was too excited, I couldn’t wait – I did it Monday instead.” Dave, 30, and Colleen, 28, met five years ago through mutual friends and family, but didn’t start dating until two years later when they both found themselves living in the same area. Dave moved to Invermere from Nova Scotia in 2003 to work at Panorama, and now works as a machinist for TXN Installations in Athalmer. Colleen made the valley her

home three-and-a-half years ago when she relocated from Edmonton to work in administration and registration at Invermere’s College of the Rockies. The outdoor-oriented couple chose to permanently call the area home, and will join their lives together in a valley wedding in September. The Columbia Valley was a natural choice to serve as the backdrop to their wedding, Colleen said. “People come here to vacation, and we get to live here all the time. It’s such a nice place. By having our wedding here, our family and friends can see where we live and have a little minivacation of their own.” Colleen and Dave’s nuptials were held outdoors on a private lot overlooking Lake Windermere, with 125 guests to witness the couple tie the knot on their special day. “We both love the outdoors,” said Colleen. “I don’t think there was really a question that we were going to have it outside.” Following the ceremony, the wedding guests will travel to Radium Resort for a reception.

Colleen has enjoyed planning her wedding alongside five friends who are all being wed in the valley within four months of each other in ceremonies at Panorama, Fairmont, and Eagle Ranch. “There are quite a few options for being a relatively small area,” Colleen said. “All of the vendors in town have been amazing to work with.” Colleen chose to stay local for many of her wedding details. Invermere’s Palliser Printing printed her invitations, the bridal party’s hair was done by Nelie’s Salon in Radium, Canterbury Flowers in Invermere took care of the floral arrangements, local musician Oso Simple serenaded the couple down the aisle, and the rehearsal dinner was catered by Randy MacSteven. With all of the finer points taken care of, Colleen and Dave could focus on enjoying the day they said, “I do.” Dave is looking forward to their wedding, but is happier about the prospect of a life with Colleen. “I’m just excited she’ll always be there. She’s perfect.”

“Once I had the ring in my hand I was too excited, I couldn’t wait.”

The Best laid plans Church wedding or outdoor? Winter or summer? Traditional or modern? These pages are bulging with tips, suggestions and important information which should help any couple wanting to tie the knot in the Columbia Valley. With our helping hand your special day can be as beautiful, memorable and stress-free as you have always dreamed. “Once a couple comes to me that wants to get married in the valley, I start by figuring out the level of help they are looking for,” said Leanne Brooks of Lucky in Love Wedding Design, who can assist couples with any aspect of wedding preparations. “Some want everything from finding a venue to getting a cake to putting up decorations, others are looking for guidance on local vendors, or some just want decorating and nothing more.” One of the most lasting mementos of your special day (after your spouse!) will be your wedding photos. With a wealth of talented shutterbugs in the local area finding the right photographer is a cinch. “Most photographers have a 'style', whether they like to admit it or not,” suggested Julie-Anne Davies, of Julie-Anne Davies Photography. “So study many photographers websites/portfolios until you find one that matches the 'essence' of what you are envisioning for your wedding.”

We’ve also compiled some suggestions from the valley’s best photographers to help you make the most of whoever snaps your pictures on the day. A big decision for any bride and groom is the perfect time of year to get married. We’ve filled this year’s edition of Columbia Valley Weddings with some top seasonal tips to help anyone from a blushing spring bride to those planning a ski wedding in wintertime. If you’re stuck for the perfect blooms to match the style and season of your wedding then our two talented valley florists, The Stem Floral Design and Canterbury Flowers can help with everything from bouquets to flowers to top your cake. Help keep your guests dancing all night with some fantastic song selections. From formal to casual the valley is filled with local musicians, bands and DJs — like Will Comrie, of W.C. Productions, who will work with you every step of the way to design the soundtrack to the biggest day of your life. As for the cake and catering, don’t worry we’ve got you covered. Two wonderful valley bakers and a local caterer share their suggestions on how to plan a wonderful wedding meal, with a breathtaking cake to follow. “Ask for samples and taste everything before you buy,” suggested experienced planner Leanne Brooks. “Typically if you hire a venue with meal included it’s as simple as choosing what you want to test. If you are getting it catered it can sometimes be a bit more flexible, allowing you to create your own menu.” With a helpful index in the back Columbia Valley Weddings should help you with every step along the way until you’re walking down the aisle.

choosing the right venue Considering a venue for your Columbia Valley Wedding, the sky is — literally — the limit. Last year, we reported a successful proposal floated high aloft the Bugaboos aboard a Babin Air charter flight. Heliweddings — wedding parties choppered to the summit of their favourite peak for the ‘promise in the powder’ — are not uncommon. Whether you are considering a ‘coupling at the cottage’ or the ‘ritual at the resort’, one thing is for sure: choosing the venue is extremely important. "Finding a venue is huge. You want to know where you are going to get married so that everything can fit around that,” said Leanne Brooks, Invermere’s Lucky in Love wedding planner. “It's the most important thing to get done first." Lucky for you, you can’t toss a bouquet around here without it landing in a drop-dead, heart-achingly romantic location. "About 85 percent of people who come to me are from out of town and a lot are tied to the valley emotionally. Maybe they met here or came here on vacation when they were young. The best location to get married should encompass that love you have for the area," Ms. Brooks explained. Getting married outside is tempting and do-able, she said, but if you are planning an outdoor reception, logistics can be challenging.

Photo Julie-Anne Davies Photography Dan Werry and groomsmen, attending the wedding of Christine Gauthier and Dan Werry at St. Eugene Mission, Cranbrook, B.C.

“For the ceremony, it's easy to do — as long as everyone can get there — but for a reception, you'll need a piece of private land to set up a tent and decorations," she said. For some of our favourite venues and the folks who can help you make it happen, see the Wedding Services Directory on Page 34.

The scenery in the Columbia Valley is plentiful, and offers an endless, everchanging array of backgrounds to capture your perfect wedding photograph. Hidden photographic gems like heritage buildings, quiet streams, and old barns are available if you take the time to scout out locations. The area is strewn with hidden remnants of the past: old barns and heritage buildings. Historical spots provide an unlikely but romantic setting for your photos.

Well-manicured golf courses: a unique way to capture your wedding day bliss. Carts, clubs, and vibrant green grass are a fun contrast to a formal wedding day.

Even if you’re having a winter wedding, the windswept ice on the lakes makes for dramatic images. The area is also ripe with trickling brooks and fast-flowing streams.

A field of grasses may seem rustic, but against a seamless blue sky the effect is whimsical. Cuddle among the wildflowers and let your love speak for itself.

Through the Lens Everyone has visited a friend’s house and been squeezed with envy by a beautiful, framed wedding photograph that looks like it should be on the pages of Vogue instead of on the fireplace mantle. Choosing your wedding photographer can be stressful, but by taking the time to think through your choice beforehand, you will most likely reap the rewards in the form of gorgeous wedding photos of your own.

How do a bride and groom make sure they choose a photographer that matches their creative expectations? “Ask to see an entire wedding he/she has taken. Remember that a photographer’s portfolio is only his very best shots.” - Chris Pullen “I always suggest to my couples that they send me ideas of images that they love, not so I can replicate them, but so I can understand what they are looking for and what is important to them.” - Amy Lavonne “Tell them what you like as well as what you don't. The most important point here is to be clear about your needs. Chat with them about how they will go about capturing your wedding day and look at samples of their work together.” - Kyla Brown “Having someone that you are comfortable with is probably one of the biggest things to look for. The photographer can be an amazing, award-winning talent, but if you don’t click with them, then chances are that you won’t be completely satisfied .” - Duane Clemens

Columbia Valley Weddings 2011

Aside from the stunning scenery, what makes the Columbia Valley an ideal place for taking photos? “The diversity of backdrops found in the Columbia Valley is just stunning. As a photographer, it is very easy to be inspired when we know that we can choose from sweeping mountain vistas, open plains, dense trees, waterways, lakes and even some architectural features found in each of the towns. Best of all, it is all very accessible — something that definitely cannot be said for getting married in a large urban area” - Duane Clemens “I find that people who decide to get married in the Columbia Valley already have a soft spot in their hearts for the beauty of the area. When you are making memories and sharing such an important day in a beautiful space where you feel comfortable, you can naturally relax and be yourself.” - Kyla Brown “One of the best things about living in the Columbia Valley is the pace of life. I shoot for many clients from the larger cities and they always seem so taken aback by how mellow

things are here. The hairdresser is usually two minutes from the flower shop, one minute from the resort, and right beside where you have to pick up the cake. There's no fighting with traffic or crowds and plenty of quiet places where we can sneak away for a private, uninterrupted shoot together.” - Julie-Anne Davies

What can a bride and groom do in advance to make the shoot go smoothly? “If you want the more 'formal' shots, write out a list for your photographer of your must-have shots, assign a time line to them, and appoint a relative to be the time-checker. The more time taken to do the formal shots, the less time available for the more creative shots of the couple, which in my mind really are the most important ones of all.” - Julie-Anne Davies “Get to know your photographer and let them get to know you so they can capture more than just a great picture, they can capture the essence of the couple on a very important day. A great way to do this is an engagement shoot. These aren’t always just for the pictures, but are a great preview to how you work together and what you are comfortable with.” - Amy Lavonne "Review the wedding day schedule so all times, locations and details are coordinated.” - Kerilyn Pitaoulis “For brides that are a bit less traditional, doing the romantic portraits prior to the wedding ceremony is one of our favorite wedding timelines to work with. It frees you and your groom to enjoy the photography without worrying about what comes next, and also creates a totally seamless experience for your family and friends.” - Duane Clemens

What should you consider when choosing a photo location? “Some open land, mountains, or water for a beautiful backdrop, with access to some close by interesting features would be ideal. Avoid too many locations, as traveling in between takes up valuable time.” - Frida Viklund “Light is a major factor in photography so when choosing a photo location its best to be in a shaded spot. Direct sunlight, especially mid afternoon in the summer, causes heavy shadows and people to squint in photos.” - Kerilyn Pitaoulis “Consider the amount of time it takes to get to the location as that can impact the time you have for your shots between the ceremony and reception.” Kyla Brown “My main priority would be to ensure that no power lines and vehicles would be in the way. Old shacks and barns would be a great asset. The Columbia Valley is so beautiful it would br difficult to choose a bad location.” - Chris Pullen

What should a couple keep in mind while you’re taking their photos? “When the photographer is testing light or busy fixing your dress, just relax and chill out until the photographer tells you what to do. Have fun!” - Frida Viklund “I always remind the couple before we begin shooting that the more fun they have 'cuddling and loving' one another during the shoot, the better the images will be. Although you may not 'see' what I am seeing at that moment, just trust that I have a vision and allow yourself to go with it!” - Julie Anne Davies Photos by Frida Viklund Photography Consider choosing a photo location that complements your dress or other details in your wedding.

“Just relax. Try and forget I'm there. I use large focal length lenses as much as possible so I'm not in their faces.” - Chris Pullen “Photography has come a long ways from everyone in a line in a studio. Relax and try and enjoy it — that is when you will get the pictures that you will treasure.” - Amy Lavonne

Bridal Blossoms Choosing your wedding flowers in the Columbia Valley Flowers are one of the easiest ways to add a unique splash of personality to your nuptials. Incorporate textures, colours, and shapes to your wedding blossoms that complement the overall feel of your special day, and your guests will be sure to notice the extra touch of detail. Exchanging vows in the Columbia Valley presents some unique opportunities when choosing your bridal buds. Consider taking a cue from the surrounding mountain scenery and selecting bouquets and arrangements with an earthy, wildflower look. “We find people are aiming now for a more natural look. Couples are choosing flowers with an outdoorsy feel,” said Sandi Clark of Invermere’s Canterbury Flowers. “When people come out to this area, they want something that looks like it came from the area,” agreed Shandrea O’Brien of The Stem Floral Design in Invermere. But before you decide what type of flowers you want, think about how their colours will go with your wedding theme and location. “We find particular types of flowers aren’t so much the trend as the colours are,” said Canterbury Flowers’ Joanne Broadfoot. “People tend to pick the colour first, then the type of flower because the colours really dictate what the flowers can be.”

From boutonnieres to…

The Columbia Valley has a rich natural colour palate to draw inspiration from, regardless of the season you wed in. Deep azure blue lakes in the summer, gingery orange autumn leaves, crisp white winter snow, and the fresh fields of spring offer great jumping-off points when beginning to plan your floral colour scheme. However you choose to design your wedding day blossoms, remember to have fun and let your creative flair show.

We couldn’t have asked for a better day

An active, outdoor wedding at Panorama Mountain Village was a dream come true for mountain enthusiasts Menno and Jamie Boelman. With many fond memories of summers and winters enjoying the mountains, getting married among the peaks at Panorama was particularly special for Menno and Jamie Boelman. A quasidestination wedding offered a spectacular setting, convenience for their nearby guests and endless entertainment possibilities on the mountain. And as the area was familiar after many trips to Jamie’s parents’ summer home in Invermere, the choice was simple. After meeting as undergraduates at the University of Alberta, Jamie and Menno started dating in 2007, while both studying for their second degrees. The couple got engaged in December 2009 while on a ski trip at Fernie Alpine Resort, putting together their wedding in just six months. “We wanted to get married locally because we both love the mountains,” Jamie said. “We chose Panorama because of the setting and the facilities that they could provide for the wedding and reception.” They decided on the stunning views by the resort’s helipad for their ceremony, held on July 3rd 2010, with the reception a short distance away at the Great Hall. With a florist in the family, flowers were the main decoration of the day. The couple chose a colour scheme of coral, with all the blooms ordered wholesale from California, giving the ceremony and reception a very floral, summery feel. The ornate bouquet included orchids, kangaroo paws, lilies, pin cushion flowers and miniature roses, with pew markers incorporating the same coral roses and two huge arrangements adorning the arch under which the

couple were married. Menno stood waiting in the sunshine at the alter looking dashing in a dark blue Hugo Boss suit, with a light blue shirt and yellow boutonnière. Jamie’s strapless gown, by Badgley Mischka, was floaty and feminine with a sweetheart neckline, a sash around the waist and a soft, flowing skirt, with the bridesmaids wearing similarly styled, coral cocktail dresses. “The highlight for both of us was when we saw each other at the ends of the aisle upon commencing the ceremony,” Jamie explained. “All that planning and all our friends and family there, it was so exciting to have finally reached that moment.” There was a surprise for the couple as they arrived at their reception in the great hall, with many of their 200 guests holding up ski poles to form an arch to walk through. Along with multiple floral displays dotted with coral blooms, the couple selected gold accents and drapes made from tulle to soften the room. Gold, white and ivory candles were scattered across tables, giving a gentle, romantic glow. Food was provided by Panorama Mountain Village’s Glen McKenzie, followed by a chocolate cake made by Colleen Kozy, a family friend. For entertainment Jamie and Menno chose DJ, Ben Miles of Livin’ and Dancin' DJ Services, Canmore, who kept the dance floor packed throughout the night with a selection of popular tunes. It was satisfying to see everyone having a great time...All in all, we couldn’t have asked for a better day and will remember it forever!”

There was a lot of love in the air

For Erin and Jesse Novak, a nature-themed wedding in the mountains was the only choice. Photos by Amy Lavonne Photography

Erin and Jesse Novak met in Venice, Italy, three years ago while backpacking across Europe. Erin had just graduated from university and Jesse was between an internship and his final university year. After a game of beach volleyball, followed by dinner, the pair stayed up all night listening to music, vowing to stay in touch after Erin left the next day. A week later they reconvened in Greece. “It was then we realized our feelings for each other,” Erin said. “We planned to meet up when we got back to Alberta. Two weeks later at the Stampede we decided to try long distance and three years later...” Erin’s parents have a condo in Invermere, where the couple spent a lot of time together, so the Columbia Valley seemed the perfect place to tie the knot. The beautiful backdrop at Eagle Ranch Golf Course near Invermere was the spot they chose for their special day. “We have always wanted to get married outdoors in the mountains and having spent so much time out at the condo, Invermere was an obvious choice,” Erin explained. The couple decided on a contemporary, nature theme, complemented by the modern country-style clubhouse at Eagle Ranch where the reception was held. The spectacular scenery beside the 18th hole provided the setting for their outdoor ceremony, held on September 26th, 2009. To tie in with their nature theme, Erin and Jesse chose wedding colours of copper, espresso and cream. The Stem Floral Design and Gift-

ware in Invermere worked with the couple to create Erin’s bouquet from calla lilies, willow branches, berries and grasses, with boutonnières to match. The table centrepieces were oval vases filled with river rocks, willow branches and mini calla lilies. For her walk down the aisle Erin chose a cream off the shoulder gown from the Bridal House in Edmonton. Bridemaids Shannon and Kristina and Erin’s three sisters, Hayley, Aynsley and Stephanie wore espresso brown dresses cut in a v neck style. The men looked dapper, teaming tuxedos with espresso brown vests and ties, worn with a cream shirt. “There was a lot of love in the air,” Erin said. “After the outdoor ceremony there were some beautiful speeches, followed by an amazing dinner and a touching slide show put on by my sisters.” Dinner was provided by Eagle Ranch Resort and followed by a modern wedding cake along with a tower of cupcakes for guests. The eight inch chocolate sponge had a raspberry filling, with cream cheese icing and the cupcakes were a mix of chocolate, vanilla and carrot cake, in coppery cupcake holders. The couple decided not to have a DJ, handpicking their favourite songs to keep the crowd entertained. For their first dance the choice was the simple The Way I Am, by Ingrid Michaelson, sung by Erin’s sister, Aynsley. The final song of the night, Chris Brown’s Forever, had Erin and a couple of the girls dancing on the bar, to the delight of their guests. “We felt the day went incredibly smoothly and well.”

SUMMER

What could be as lovely as getting married with the sun on your skin, a warm summer breeze, surrounded with friends and family? Summer is the most popular wedding season, with June taking the crown for favourite month. It is also a great time for an outdoor wedding, with good weather pretty much guaranteed. In an area with such astounding natural beauty there is so much choice of where, when and how to tie the knot in the valley.

Finessing the finer points Incorporating everything into the wedding of your dreams can be a bit confusing, but it’s well worth the effort. When planning a wedding, the endless options for venues, decorations, food, and flowers can be overwhelming. Nowadays, you can take your nuptials in almost any direction you can imagine. Dance the night away Forget the chicken dance and the Macarena, your wedding music should reflect your personality, with songs chosen to set the mood. When dreaming up your perfect wedding soundtrack, there are two main areas to cover: the ceremony and the reception. Whether you hire vocalists or musicians, pay a disc jockey or put together your own selection, song choices play a large part in setting the tone of your big day. For the ceremony you need at least three pieces: the first as guests take their seats; the second as the bride walks down the aisle; and finally the recessional song — most commonly Mendelssohn’s Wedding March — which plays as you leave the altar. Let your imagination run wild, anything from classical music to modern love songs will work, so long as it is personal to you. For church weddings, consult with the officiant, as some churches have restrictions on music.

During the reception, a party mood is easily created with the right tunes. For a more formal event consider hiring classical musicians like a string quartet, harpist or pianist. If you want an edgier feel, mix it up with a jazz group, folk band or rock and roll. When you hire a band or a DJ, tell them what you like well in advance. DJ Will Comrie, of Wil C. Productions, suggests letting your musicians or DJ know the type of crowd coming so they can help choose appropriate songs. “It’s also really important to let your DJ know the sort of music you don’t want,” Will said. “If you hate country or rap then let them know that you don’t want it during your reception.” The decisions on music for your first dance, the cake cutting, the bouquet toss “It’s also really and more, should be relayed important to let your to your DJ or band. It’s also DJ know the sort of good to think about making music you don’t want" your songs flow seamlessly; switching from punk to piano concertos could leave guests scratching their heads. “If you hire a DJ they will create a list of songs and mix them together for you to make sure nothing is out of place,” Will Comrie suggested. “They can be there, set up and playing when your guests arrive, so nobody is waiting around.” And remember if wedding music has you stumped, why not ask those who will be listening alongside you? Include a song suggestion box on your invitations for your guests to pick their favourite tunes. That way you’ll be guaranteed to have your wedding party boogieing until the early hours.

Bridal day beauty Making the most of the days before your wedding. Although the day of your wedding is certainly the main event, the days leading up to your “I do’s” can be just as fun. If your wedding party is able to arrive a few nights before the big day, take the opportunity to schedule a few pre-nuptial activities to relax before you tie the knot. Your wedding party will appreciate being pampered, and in a destination area like the Columbia Valley, it’s a great way to

experience your wedding venue on a mini-vacation of sorts. While the men may wish to skip the spa and take a day on one of the many local golf courses, there are several pampering options for the bridal party. Take your favourite ladies to one of the area’s spas, such as Bare Hands Spa in Radium Hot Springs, for pedicures and manicures to match bridesmaid dresses, relax in the hot springs and enjoy a post-soak massage, or book appointments to have your hair styled together before the wedding ceremony. Another way to thank your wedding party is to give them a gift. A nice option is giving a necklace or earrings to wear in the wedding, or cufflinks for the men. Fairmont Goldsmiths in Invermere make custom jewelry, including engagement rings, so you can add a personal flair to your selections.

Let them eat cake From the lightest of cupcakes to a traditional fruitcake, the valley’s bakers can work with you to create the perfect cake for your nuptuals.

Nowadays brides and grooms are bucking the heavy fruitcake trend in favour of melt-in-the-mouth sponges and individual cupcakes. Whether you are a chocaholic, nut lover or fruit fanatic, your baker can help design the ideal cake for you and your guests. And with the option of different flavoured layers, truly all tastes can be catered for. “A lot of couples start with the cake,” said Sabina Rodgers, the pastry chef at Quality Bakery in Invermere. “It’s something familiar and easy to do, plus grooms love to get involved with the cake. Some couples come a year in advance with fabrics, colours, pictures from the internet; others show up two weeks before the wedding.” Chocolate and vanilla top the list of cake requests, but the best way to discover what’s on offer is with a tasting. Taking an hour to sit down with your baker ensures you know your options and they discover your tastes. Most cake makers will provide as many cupcakes or individual cakes as you have guests, along with a small cake to cut. If a tiered cake is all you desire, then consider different flavour combinations for each layer: carrot cake with cream cheese filling; strawberry shortcake; and lemon sponge are all popular (and delicious) options. “Colours are a big part of coordinating your wedding,” said Angela Mose, owner of the Cake Box in Fairmont Hot Springs. “I can handmake sugar ribbons in the theme colour, or gum paste flowers, leaves, branches, berries and any other decorations couples come up with.” Bakers can also coordinate with your florist to decorate your cake with the same fresh flowers that appear in your bouquet. Cutting the cake is one of the highlights of the reception, so make sure you’ve relayed to your baker how many guests you’ll have. There’s no point in having a cake if guests miss out on their slice. And remember that tiered or elaborate cakes may need to be finished on site, so it’s nice to set aside an area for your cake maker. Finally, remember to check if the price includes delivery. Most bakers factor this into the quote they give you, ensuring less stress on the day, but it’s always good to check.

What's Cooking You’ve walked the aisle, the vows have been said and it’s official, you’re husband and wife — it’s time to eat, drink and be merry! Good food and over-dinner chatter, laughter and speeches are a highlight of any wedding day. And who says keeping your guests well fed has to break the bank? When you hire your venue, check out whether you’ll need to hire a caterer or if a meal can be included inhouse. Many locations offer packages that include food and a number of drinks in the price, taking the stress out of finding the perfect wedding meal. A stunning Columbia Valley venue, Copper Point Golf Course, does just that. A ceremony on the beauti-

ful grounds can be followed by a tantalizing meal at the View restaurant, prepared by on-site culinary expert, Anne Riches. “I start by showing the couple a menu of some popular choices,” Anne explained. “If they have their own ideas I am always keen to hear them, so that we can work together to make the ideal menu.” Top catering tip: remember to ask about cake cutting and corkage fees, these little hidden extras really add up over the course of the day.

The gift registry: changing trends

With each new generation of brides and grooms, aging traditions are abandoned to reflect these modern times in which we live. In your mother’s day, the gift registry aimed to stock the young couple with all they needed to equip a proper home: kitchen gear, dinner ware, guest linens, and the like. Back then, the bride and groom were leaving their parents' home for the first time to strike out on their own. Nowadays, things are dramatically different. More often than not, the bride and groom have been living on their own, or with house mates, for years. The challenge of combining and weeding out duplicates of household items is more common today. Often times, the couple might already own a fully-equipped home. Then, the gift registry becomes something completely different. The items on the gift registry today are more likely to reflect the interests, lifestyles and values of the happy couple. Gift registries might center on a couple’s commonly held dreams or ambitions. Whether it is to travel to an exotic location, establish or advance a business concern, retire old debt, or earn an advanced degree, there is no shortage of good ideas for a modern gift registry.

Look Sympli

Financial gift registries are becoming quite common. If the young couple doesn’t already own their home, a gift registry can help advance that ambition. However, financial gift registries can be established for a multitude of reasons, including travel, education, debt service, investment, and venture capital. The most striking trend that reflects the values of modern couples is the pay-it-forward scheme. Instead of asking for wedding gifts for themselves, couples sometimes ask guests to donate money they would have spent on gift registry items to a nonprofit organization or worthy cause. Through charitable registries like www.idofoundation.org, your guests can give money to your chosen charities instead. Similarly, some registries earmark a percentage of each guest’s purchase to your chosen charity. Whichever route you choose, let your imagination run wild and design a gift registry that meets your needs.
