L

ong before white settlers arrived in the late 1800s, the Columbia Valley was a bountiful fishing and hunting ground for First Nations. The Ktunaxa Nation drew sustenance from the Columbia River for thousands of years. Today, the Shuswap and Akisqnuk tribes thrive in the valley. The arrival of David Thompson signalled the arrival of the white man. In 1807, Thompson explored the section of the Columbia River that passes through what is now the Town of Golden. In the 1850s, the Palliser Expedition searched the area for a route through the

mountains, for the Canadian Pacific Railway. In 1882, Major A.B. Rogers, for whom the Rogers Pass was named, found a route through the Selkirk Mountains. His survey crew formed the first settlement in Golden. David Thompson built the valley’s first trading post, called Kootenae House, on the banks of the Columbia River, near Invermere. From that base, he traded goods for pelts with the natives, and mapped and measured the mountains and streams in the area. He was the first white man to travel the full length of the river from its headwaters at Columbia

Lake to the Pacific Ocean. Wilmer, the hamlet just north of Invermere, began attracting white settlers in the 1880s. Most were single men who had heard of a second mining boom in the area (following the discovery of gold at Findley Creek 20 years before), and came to work at the Paradise and Ptarmigan mines. They arrived aboard the steamboats owned by Francis Patrick Armstrong, there being no trains and few navigable roads at that time. The turn of the 20th century brought an influx of British settlers, mainly farming families. Towns were laid out and businesses established. Banks, hotels, general stores and livery stables preceded hospitals, laundries and even the law. The first policeman arrived just in time to solve the area’s first murder.

Drivers through Kootenay National Park passed the Vermillion River .

The towns grew and prospered, spurred on by the settlement plan of the Columbia Valley Irrigated Fruitlands Company, which encouraged gentlemen farmers from England and Scotland to take advantage of speedy immigration and low land prices. Edgewater, nine kilometres north of Radium Hot Springs, was settled by Dr. Gaddes, the cattle rancher and veterinary surgeon from the prairies who founded the Columbia Valley Ranches. In the early 1900s, the hamlet’s focus turned to forestry. The Edgewater Sawmill attracted workers from far and wide, spawning a community.

Athalmer, Invermere and Windermere developed on the hills and banks of beautiful Lake Windermere. Radium and Fairmont, once stopping places for travellers, became widely known for their natural hot springs. The Village of Canal Flats, incorporated in 2004, is the valley’s youngest municipality. In 1899, the Canadian Pacific Railway began employing Swiss mountain guides. The lure of fresh unconquered peaks and the prospect of experiencing the untouched wilderness of an infant country drew visitors from Europe and other parts of North America. Tourism became popular.

The former Bank of Montreal in Athalmer was a gathering point in 887 .

In 1915, the Kootenay Central Railroad began operating a regularly scheduled train service between Golden and Cranbrook. In the 20th century, the Columbia Valley grew and prospered. Today the economy is considerably diversified from the lumber and mining operations that brought settlers to the region so long ago. Tourism thrives and many Canadians, especially Calgarians, own recreational homes in the valley. To learn more about local history, visit the Windermere Valley Museum in Invermere. The museum is a cluster of heritage buildings

moved to the site from other places. The main building is the old Lake Windermere CPR station. Among the museum’s treasured artefacts are a dug-out canoe made by an early Shuswap native, a blunderbuss gun dating back to the early fur traders, and a copy of David Thompson’s journal, of which only 500 copies were made before the plates were destroyed. Hunter Walter Nixon scanned the peaks with his dog Pat and horse Major .

Hot Springs History The Radium Hot Springs resulted from the unleashing of powerful forces that left their mark in heaving, tortured rocks . The earth’s crust cracked along a fault more than two kilometres deep, creating a shatter zone around the fault that lets groundwater seep close to the earth’s core . Sir George Simpson, Governor of the Hudson’s Bay Company, made the first recorded visit to the springs, in 8 . In 890, an Englishman named Roland Stuart purchased the springs for the bargain price of $ 60 . In 922, the property was expropriated and the springs became part of Kootenay National Park . Today, the Radium Hot Springs complex contains a hot soaking pool and a cool swimming pool . The water enters the

6

hot pool at a comfortable 9˚C ( 0 ˚F), and is kept close to that temperature . It is filtered and chlorinated . The temperature of the cool pool is kept at about 29˚C (8 ˚F) . For the hardy, there is a hot tub kept at a steamy ˚C ( ˚F) . The complex also houses the Pleiades Massage and Spa, a world-class day spa offering an array of massage and wellness treatments, a plunge pool and a steam room . A café with an outdoor patio is open in the summer months . The scenery around the complex is spectacular and the area is abundant with wildlife . For more information, go to radiumhotsprings.com

Welcome from the Mayor of Invermere On behalf of my fellow town councillors and everyone on staff at the District of Invermere, I am pleased to welcome you to our town. I served Invermere as a town councillor for two terms before being elected as Mayor, in 2008. I am proud to represent the citizens of one of the most beautiful and prosperous mountain towns in the world. We have 3,200 full-time residents and three times as many folks who are privileged to live here at least part of the year. Because we have a long tradition of playing host to people from all over the world, you can expect warm hospitality, an astonishing range of recreational activities, and all

Gaelic for “at the mouth of the lake.” Invermere officially incorporated in 1951. Its history is recorded at the Windermere Valley Museum, in displays and carefully preserved documents and photographs. Invermere is a visitor’s paradise. The pretty downtown district has trendy boutiques

The Stolen Church The Columbia Valley abounds with great stories, but none more amusing than the story of the stolen church .

their beloved church and a few other buildings . But, when the movers arrived, the church had vanished into thin air .

It’s a story about a town—about the railroad that created it, and about the loving husband who became its most notorious criminal .

The criminal was Rufus Kimpton, a town merchant . Rufus and his wife Celina wanted no part of the trek to Second Crossing, so they moved to Windermere instead . Once there, Celina began to pine for the church . She had been married there . Her two sons had been christened there, and her first child was buried nearby . She loved the church and Rufus loved her, so he went back to First Crossing and stole it for her .

Donald, a tiny community north of Golden, was founded during construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway . The town was originally called First Crossing because it was there that the CPR first crossed the mighty Columbia River . It was the first divisional point of the railway in that part of the province, and it was a proud community . It boasted a modern commercial district, fine homes, and an Anglican church called St . Peter’s .

Without permission from the Anglican authorities in faraway New Westminster, he dismantled the building and moved it piece by piece, by wagon and barge, up the Columbia River to Windermere, where The Reverend Henry Irwin, also known it stands today . as “Father Pat,” spearheaded the building Stolen along with the church was a prized of the church in 887 . Bishop Shillitoe Bible, a gift from the theological college at consecrated it on February 2 , 889 . The Litchfield, England . Rufus had intended to Baroness Burdett-Coutts, a prominent steal the church bell as well, but the citizens benefactress at that time, donated a 600- of Golden beat him to it . The bell was left pound, silver-toned bell, which became an there en route to Second Crossing . They took object of civic pride . it for their own church, and Rufus had to find First Crossing was a grand town, but it was a another bell for his cherished “stolen church .” railroad town, and its fate would ultimately be decided by the CPR . Sure enough, ten years after the dedication of the church, the railroad changed the divisional point from First Crossing to the town of Second Crossing, now known as Revelstoke .

The stolen church still offers Sunday morning services in the summer, and is a popular location for weddings . For information, call Windermere Valley Shared Ministry at 2 0- 2-66 .

In fairness, the CPR agreed to move the residents of First Crossing to the new location, a l o n g with their homes, Rufus Kimpton moved St . Peter’s church for his beloved wife, Celina .

The industrial park on the town’s northern border is home to a popular antiques store and a variety of services, including auto and boat care, pet care, recycling, and printing and photocopying. Invermere has two hardware stores, one enroute to the industrial park and the other at the entrance to town. Invermere also has an amazing artists’ coop and several fine art galleries, which showcase the works of local talent and artists from around the world. No visit to Invermere is complete without a stop at Pynelogs Cultural Centre, home to the

Valley Appreciation Day is a popular summer event. July 1st is always celebrated in grand style, with fireworks and outdoor fun for the whole family. Fairmont Hot Springs

History

In 887, George Geary homesteaded the land around the natural hot springs now known as Fairmont Hot Springs . He established a post office, a stagecoach depot, a horse ranch and a sawmill . Within three years, he sold the ranch and roadhouse to Sam and Helen Brewer, an adventurous couple from Indiana . In 909, the Brewers retired and sold their holdings to John Barnard Hankey, who named the roadhouse Fairmont Hotel Springs .

Starting in 9 2, Holland harnessed the springs, built a swimming pool, erected the Fairmont Hot Springs Ranch Barn (which still stands), started a restaurant, opened a campground and built bungalows . A putting green, and tennis, badminton and tetherball courts soon followed . Holland bequeathed the resort to his family . In 9 7, a group of investors that included Lloyd and Earl Wilder, brothers from Saskatchewan, bought the resort . Lloyd became its sole proprietor in 96 . He launched the resort’s first major expansion, a series of changes that realized William Holland’s vision of an international resort . For more information, go to www.fairmonthotspringsresort.com

The resort changed owners several times in the 20th century . William Heap Holland, an eccentric cotton millionaire from Manchester, England, is credited with recognizing the springs’ international potential . Dazzled by the beauty of the entire region, the dapper entrepreneur drafted the Columbia Valley’s first

promotional brochure—and drew scores of English tourists to the area .

Welcome from the Mayor of Canal Flats On behalf of my fellow members of council and all the citizens of Canal Flats, I want to take this opportunity to welcome you to our village. This is my first year in office, and I am proud to represent our community. Canal Flats was incorporated in 2004 and is one of the youngest municipalities in British Columbia. It is a diverse and friendly community of people working together to build a quality lifestyle for generations to come. Like all young communities, Canal Flats faces a number of challenges. We experienced strong, steady growth in the early to mid 2000s, which called for a thoughtful and responsible approach to managing the rapid development of this area. We rose to the challenge, and our community is strong and viable. We anticipate a bright future.

If this is your first visit to Canal Flats, you will be dazzled by all the amenities that our full-time and part-time residents enjoy: our gorgeous scenery, our access to beautiful Columbia Lake, and the astonishing variety of recreational activities available here. We are particularly proud of the recently completed 1.5 km hiking and interpretive trail to the springs that are the source of the Columbia River. Enjoy your stay with us. We look forward to seeing you again. Sincerely,

Bruce Woodbury Mayor of Canal Flats

welcome to

Canal Flats The Village of Canal Flats is situated at the southern end of the Columbia Valley, just off Highway 93/95. Columbia Lake, the source of the mighty Columbia River, is on the north edge of the village and the Kootenay River is on the south. The Canadian Rockies International Airport is just an hour’s drive to the south. Canal Flats is surrounded by provincial parks dotted with clear mountain lakes and abundant with wildlife. Local amenities include a public beach and boat launch at the lake, a golf course, an arena, a lending library and retail shops and services. Although it is supported mainly by the lumber industry, Canal Flats is increasingly attractive to visitors, recreation homeowners and families seeking relatively affordable

housing in a small-town atmosphere. The scenery is spectacular and there is plenty to do year-round. The Village now called Canal Flats was first called McGillivray’s Portage, by David Thompson, the legendary explorer and cartographer who passed through the area in 1808. In 1913 the post office changed the village’s name to reflect its history. On the west side of the Village are the remains of a canal built in 1889 to connect the Kootenay River to Columbia Lake. The canal was part of a scheme by entrepreneur William Adolph Baillie-Grohman to breach Canal Flats and divert water from the upper Kootenay River into the Columbia system, thereby sufficiently lowering the level of Kootenay Lake to reclaim the rich 48,000acre alluvial plain in the Creston area and open up a north-south navigational system from Golden all the way to Montana.

From Donald in the north to the village of Canal Flats in the south, the communities of the Columbia Valley will one day be linked by a network of trails, for the enjoyment of residents and visitors alike . “We envision people connected to each other and to the fabulous environment around us,” says Nick Berzins, Executive Director of the Columbia River Greenways Alliance . “We work to make that connection happen in a truly sustainable way .” The not-for-profit CRGA is working with people across the valley to link existing land and water greenways with new ones . The connected pathways constitute The Upper Columbia Valley Greenways, a network of accessible, natural spaces where wildlife flourish and history is preserved . In 200 , the CRGA oversaw completion of The Confluence Park Greenway in the town of Golden, just south of Donald . Situated at the confluence of the Columbia and Kicking Horse Rivers, the park site is rich in history . It was well known to First Nations and early European explorers, and was a terminus for paddle wheelers on the Columbia River .

2

The Confluence Park Greenway contains 0 hectares of beaches and forests stretching from the Kicking Horse River south to an old float plane base . The walking/cycling trail meanders one kilometre through lowland river forest to a viewing platform and picnic area where visitors may spot birds of prey, whitetail deer and black bear . The interpretive panels along the trail inform visitors about the site’s ecology and history . The site links hikers and cyclists to the Rotary trails throughout Golden, to Reflection Lake and the Mount Seven Trailhead . It is an ideal place in which to observe the seasonal temperament of the mighty Columbia River . In 2008, the CRGA completed The Source of the Columbia Greenway, a . kilometre walking trail that begins in the Columbia Valley Wetlands, the source of the Columbia River, near the village of Canal Flats . The site is historically significant, both for its role in the history of the Ktunaxa Nation and as the staging area for David Thompson’s exploration of the river . The Ktunaxa people have occupied the lands adjacent to the Kootenay and Columbia Rivers and the Arrow Lakes for more than 0,000 years . For thousands of years they

Universally accessible and child-friendly, the Source of the Columbia Greenway meanders through bulrush marshland, wet sedge meadows, willow and birch shrub lands, and open forests of spruce and trembling aspen . It offers excellent viewpoints of unique marshland habitats— home to species-at-risk, including western toad, painted turtle, American bittern and great blue heron . Along the pathway, a series of interpretive panels tells the creation story of the Ktunaxa Nation .

Other greenways in the Columbia Valley include the Botanical Gardens in Invermere, the Whiteway on Lake Windermere (for skating and skiing), the Dragonfly Boardwalk at James Chabot Provincial Park, the Old Coach Trail from Radium Hot Springs to Dry Gulch, and the Sinclair Creek Greenway in Radium . For trail maps and more information go to www .crownofthecontinent .net and follow the links to “greenway .” Incorporated in 2000, The Columbia River Greenways Alliance operates entirely with the generosity of sponsors and in-kind donors . Day tripping North from Radium Hot Springs For a fabulous road trip with plenty of things to see and do along the way, cruise north from Radium Hot Springs on Highway 95 toward the town of Golden, about 1.5 hours away. Flanked by the Purcell Mountains to the west and the Rockies to the east, this smooth highway has breathtaking scenery in every direction. The first leg of the trip takes you through the Columbia Valley Wetlands, the largest continuous wetlands in North America. Next you’ll enjoy touring the peaceful communities of Edgewater, Spur Valley, Brisco and Spillimacheen. If you love chili, time your trip to coincide with Spilli Chili, the annual contest to make the valley’s best chili. It’s held every fall. If you must play, and of course you must, there are two gorgeous golf courses where you can get in nine relatively quick holes: Edgewater Hilltop Par 3, and Spur Valley Greens. And, be sure to stop at the Brisco General Store and the Spillimacheen

Trading Post, which is now a gift shop. Both stores are historic gems. Your next photo op will be the historic Galena Church, just five minutes north of Brisco. To drink in the majesty of Bugaboo Glacier Provincial Park, turn left on Brisco Road just before the general store. You’ll need four-wheel-drive for this adventure. Or, you can contact Canadian Mountain Holidays for trips to their lodge by air. The Bugaboos are beautiful and rich in history. But they’re also rugged: the terrain is best suited to experienced mountaineers and powder skiers. In Golden, you’ll have to be selective. There’s so much to do year-round: heliskiing and cat skiing, backcountry climbing and hiking, fly fishing and golfing. You haven’t lived until you’ve soared to 4,000 feet on the gondola at Kicking Horse Resort—or tried whitewater rafting, hang gliding and parasailing. The Golden Visitor Centre has all the details.

Day tripping South from Radium Hot Springs After your day trip in the Upper Columbia Valley, you’ll be eager for more. This time, head south from Radium Hot Springs on Highway 93/95 toward the city of Cranbrook, two hours away. The scenery is equally gorgeous, and there are plenty of roadside attractions. This route takes you to all the towns and villages in the Windermere Valley: Invermere on the Lake, the valley’s business centre; Windermere, home to the famed Stolen Church; and Fairmont Hot Springs, where a soak in the mineral hot pools is essential. There are fine shops, restaurants and heritage sites at every stop.

Cranbrook is the biggest city in southeastern British Columbia, with all the amenities you want in a city. But if you’ve got time for just one stop, choose the Canadian Railway Museum, the best museum of its kind in Canada. On the way home, take Highway 95A west from Cranbrook so you can check out the new golf course and casino at St. Eugene Resort. This route takes you through Kimberley, a Bavarian-flavoured resort city that’s rich in history and chock-full of fun things to do and see all year round. The Kimberley Visitor Centre has all the details.

South of Fairmont, you’ll pass beautiful Columbia Lake enroute to the village of Canal Flats. There you’ll find the trailhead of the Source of the Columbia Greenway, the 1.5 km interpretive trail at the mouth of the Columbia River. Don’t miss it: the legendary explorer David Thompson walked the same ground.

South of Canal Flats you’ll reach two stunning provincial parks: Whiteswan and Premier Lake. Both have public beaches and campsites, but for each visit the drivein takes about 20 minutes. The all-natural Lussier Hot Springs are well worth a stop (take footwear along), as is pretty Wasa Lake. Fort Steele, just before the turnoff to Cranbrook, is a must-see for history buffs.

Whiteswan Lake, southeast of Canal Flats, is placid and peaceful .

Resale Homes and Land The valley has plenty of older homes just waiting for fresh ideas. Many of these gems have choice views and are close to shops, restaurants, and recreational amenities. Because these homes are in established neighbourhoods, there are no condo fees. Thanks to the slower economy (there’s an upside!), more contractors are available to do the renovations. The availability of vacant lots in established areas varies from one locale to another. How to find your dream property Local realtors are always your best source of information. They know the market and will help you find a property much faster than you’ll find one on your own. The MLS national website www.mls.ca is a good but not necessarily comprehensive source of information. Most of the valley’s developers and builders have their own websites. The local visitor centres and chambers of commerce are very helpful.

at all the valley’s golf clubs, but some courses are longer and more challenging than others, and therefore better suited to mature players. At the end of a long day on the links, nothing goes down better than good food. Some of the best restaurants in the valley are associated with golf courses. You needn’t be a player to dine, but a satisfying meal is a great way to celebrate a satisfying round. Club restaurants offer everything

from a sandwich on the run to fine cuisine prepared by world-class chefs. Some have private banquet facilities. Wherever you play in the valley, be sure to have your camera on hand. The scenery is so spectacular it’s hard to keep your eye on the ball. And you needn’t confine yourself to the valley: just a little farther south, the cities of Cranbrook and Kimberley offer great golfing, too. Again, the beauty is stunning and the golfing is great. Enjoy your game!

Fabulous food and fun times!

Dining out is one of the best things about vacationing in the Columbia Valley: the chance to savour delicious food lovingly prepared and served with flair, to enjoy local entertainers, and to watch the sun set from your table with a view. 66

When it comes to food and beverages, the valley prides itself on quality and variety. We’ve got fine restaurants, cafés, fast-food outlets, family diners and adults-only pubs. We’ve got resort restaurants where Sunday brunch can be savoured with a view, and ethnic eateries where the menu demands an adventurous palate. Among the many great choices, there are a few standouts: Helna’s Stube in Radium Hot Springs has mouth-watering Hungarian cuisine. The Old Salzburg, also in Radium

The Columbia Valley has a vibrant arts and cultural scene. The valley is home to many talented performing artists, including the renowned Valley Voices Community Choir. Works by our gifted visual artists are found worldwide in major galleries and private and corporate collections. Pynelogs Cultural Centre in Invermere is the heart of arts and culture in the valley, home to the Columbia Valley Arts Council, a café, a gift shop and a public art gallery. This historic log building is also a popular venue for workshops, concerts and private functions. Every summer, the Council coordinates a tour of the studios of local artists, for a firsthand look at their latest works. Village Arts, the amazing artisans’ coop in downtown Invermere, sells works by regional artists. Artym Gallery is just a block 70

north of Village Arts. This retail gallery sells paintings, pottery, sculpture and exquisite glass works by local and national artists. Throughout the summer, Artym hosts demonstrations by artists. With generous help from corporate sponsors, the Council offers a full calendar of musical performances yearly, at Pynelogs and at Christ Church Trinity. Musicians come from all across Canada to dazzle valley audiences with vocal harmonies, piano solos, folk music, jazz, rhythm and blues, Celtic, classical music, and more. For film buffs, the Council coordinates Cinefest, a monthly independent film series offered in association with the Toronto International Film Circuit, and shown at Pynelogs. It’s unusual to meet a person with two fabulous careers. But, in the case of Mark Sharp it’s not surprising. The artist featured on the cover of this edition of the Columbia Valley Map Book has two lifelong passions: skiing and painting. It’s fitting that he has mastered both. “It’s an honour to be this year’s featured artist,” says Mark. “It’s especially gratifying to be the first local artist chosen by the publisher.” Mark was born in England but grew up in South Australia. There was no snow in the region, so he skied downhill on grass, a concept that seems “crazy” to most Canadians, he jokes. During his teen years, he travelled to the Snowy Mountains near Victoria, Australia to learn “the real thing.” Today, Mark is the Women’s World Cup technical coach of the Canadian National Alpine Ski Team. His wife Sigrid is the head coach of the Team Panorama ski team. Their three young sons, Keegan, Jedd and Trigg, are all avid downhill racers. “We all love to ski,” says Mark. When he isn’t working in the world’s most spectacular alpine regions, Mark paints

vivid mountain scenes at his comfortable home on the road to Panorama. His talent is inherited, he says. “My grandfather painted the ceilings of churches in London, England, and my father was a very good painter who taught me to paint.” Before moving to Canada in 1983, Mark earned a degree in product design at Adelaide University in Australia. His studies called for precise illustrations, a skill that greatly influenced his painting style. He uses solid, brilliant colours only—no shading. The effect is dramatic. “I suppose you could describe my work as modern impressionism,” he says. “But I don’t think of my painting in the usual artsy terms at all. I simply love to paint things as I see them.” The gorgeous painting on our cover is called Invermere Overlook. Giclees (high-quality prints) of the painting can be purchased at the Artym Gallery in Invermere. Mark’s work is also on display at the About Canada gallery in Banff, and at the Artists of the World gallery in Calgary. To view his work online, go to www.marksharpart.com.

2009 Columbia Valley Map Book

The Map Book

Cover Project Choosing a work of art to grace the cover of the Columbia Valley Map Book isn’t easy. The valley abounds with talent, and there are so many fine pieces from which to choose. But publisher Elinor Florence didn’t hesitate in selecting the acrylic painting titled Invermere Overlook for this year’s cover. “Mark Sharp is a talented local artist, and it’s a local image. And besides, it’s just a very striking piece of art.” Once again, the Map Book has joined forces with Artym Gallery in Invermere to sell reproductions of the cover art for charity. Money raised through the sale of giclees (high-quality prints) of Invermere Overlook will help to purchase a new road rescue vehicle for use by the emergency departments in the valley. The state-of-the-art vehicle will cost $450,000, and will replace two older vehicles currently in use. The Road to Rescue fundraising campaign is being coordinated by the Lake Windermere District Lion’s Club in association with the Invermere Volunteer Fire Fighters Society. The need for updated road rescue equipment is pressing, says Rick Hoar of the Lion’s Club. “The need for this kind of equpment evolves with the growth and change taking place in the valley. The Lion’s Club has been involved with this very worthy cause right from day one.”

Community support is critical, says Tom McNeil, one of 26 volunteer fire fighters in the valley. “Our rescue operations don’t fall under the jurisdiction of any government, so we rely entirely on donations. People have been very generous because it’s such an important cause. In order to be effective and efficient, we have to be able to get the right equipment and personnel where they are needed, and as quickly as possible.” To purchase a giclee of Invermere Overlook, visit the Artym Gallery at 934 – 7th Avenue in downtown Invermere, or call 250-342-7566. The prints are available in two sizes: 15 inches wide by 20 inches tall, and 30 inches wide by 40 inches tall. Prices range from $450 to $1,520 depending on size and frame. To view the painting on-line, visit www.artymgallery.com. For more information about the Road to Rescue campaign, go to www.lwlions.org

Conrad Kain A Legend for 100 Years

Where the Clouds Can Go Conrad Kain was a true man of the mountains, a skilled and daring climber who relished the challenge of an unconquered peak . He has become one of Canada’s most enduring legends . In 2009, Columbia Valley residents celebrate the hundredth anniversary of the arrival of Conrad Kain in Canada, with a variety of events coordinated by the Conrad Kain Centennial Society, community groups, and The Alpine Club of Canada . Kain was born in Nasswald, Austria in 88 . Before his untimely death in Cranbrook, British Columbia in 9 , he served as a mountain guide for 0 years in Europe, Canada and New Zealand . He moved to Canada from Austria in 909, to serve as The Alpine Club of Canada’s first professional guide at the camp at Lake O’Hara . In the early 900s, he lived in the hamlet

of Wilmer, just north of Invermere . A legend in his lifetime, Kain is credited with more than 60 first ascents and new routes in the Purcell Mountains and the Rockies . He made five first ascents in the Bugaboos, including Bugaboo Spire in 9 6 . He is widely regarded for his daring first ascents of Mount Robson ( 9 ) and Mount Louis ( 9 6) in the Canadian Rockies . “He was one of a kind,” says Hermann Mauthner, Chairman of the Conrad Kain Centennial Society . “He holds the record for first ascents in Canada . He was extremely capable and likeable . Conrad Kain was a true role model in the world of mountaineering .” In the early years, Kain lent his guiding expertise to key explorations of uncharted

In 2008, community groups and businesses joined forces with students and teachers to build the Conrad Kain Climbing Wall at J . Alfred Laird Elementary School in Invermere . The school hosted the first annual Conrad Kain Mountain Film Night that year, and will host the event again on April 2 th, 2009 . On June 6th, 2009 the Windermere Valley Museum in Invermere opens for the season with a summer-long exhibit to commemorate the Conrad Kain Centennial . On July th, 2009, the Conrad Kain Centennial Society stages the signature event of the year: the unveiling of a cairn in Kain’s honour in Wilmer . For schedule updates, go to www.conradkain.com

“Life is so short, and I think one should make a good time of it if one can.” Conrad Kain wilderness areas, including the first surveys of the Bugaboos, the Mount Robson region, and sections of the Alberta/British Columbia boundary . Later, he led the party that mapped the source of the Columbia River in the Purcells . Following his death, Kain’s friend and climbing companion, J . Monroe Thorington, published his autobiography . Titled Where the Clouds Can Go, the book is a collection of bits and pieces penned by Kain and his clients and friends, including Thorington himself . In the book, Kain wrote of being poor but privileged to have lived the way he did . “It occurred to me that after all I was a rich man, even if I had no money .”
