What’s Inside

Welcome

to our

Valley

Welcome to the Columbia Valley, the land of fresh air, high peaks, abundant wildlife and friendly folks. This is paradise on Earth. We have a long tradition of hosting visitors here, dating back to the early 20th century, when Canadians first heard of the naturally hot waters spilling from the rocks in the Rocky Mountains. They came by car and boat and train to gauge the curative powers of the mineral springs long known to First Nations as the “smoking waters,” and to witness firsthand the beauty of this land. Today, we welcome people from all over the world. If this is your first trip to the valley, you too will soak your worries away at Radium, Fairmont and Lussier Hot Springs. You’ll marvel at the mountains that contain and somehow comfort you from the town of Golden at the valley’s north end to the city of Cranbrook, just past its southern border. You’ll leave this place with memories that last. There is plenty to see and do in the Columbia Valley. Step outside your comfort zone, and into a whitewater raft. Play your best game yet on one of our scenic golf courses. Learn the meaning of the word breathless on one of our ski hills. Fish the day away on a clear mountain lake. Try wakeboarding—it’s a blast. Take a Sunday drive. Explore the back country. Reach a peak. Wherever you go, have your camera close at hand.

In these pages, you’ll find all the information you need to have a wonderful stay in the valley. If you’re here on business, you’ll find all the professional services you need. If you’re scouting for business and real estate investments, there are good prospects throughout the region. The local chambers of commerce are very helpful.

For more information about our magnific ent valley, drop by one of our Visitor Centres. The friendly, knowledgeable staff will give you directions, a list of fun activities and sound advice on how to travel safely in this moun tainous region. We hope your stay with us is memor able and that our famed hospitality draws you back again.

Whatever the reason for your stay, be sure to take advantage of everything the valley has to offer. We’ve got lakes and mountains and forests to explore. We’ve got great shops and restaurants and art galleries. We have an astonishing range of tourism programs—plus community fairs, festivals, public events and recreational activities of every kind. The scenery is a bonus.

L

ong befor e white settlers ar rived in the late 1800s, the Columbia V alley was a bountiful fishing and hunting gr ound for First Nations. The Ktunaxa Nation drew sustenance fr om the Columbia River for thousands ofyears. Today, the Shuswap and Akisqnuk tribes thrive in the valley. The arrival of D avid Thompson signalled the arrival of the whi te man. In 1807, Thompson explored the section of the Columbia Riv er that passes thr ough what is now the town of Golden. In the 1850s, the Palliser Expedition sear ched the area for a r oute thr ough the mountains, for the Canadian Pacific Railway. In 1882, Major A.B. Rogers, for whom the Rogers Pass was named, found a r oute through the Selkir k Mountains. His sur vey cr ew for med the first settlement, in Golden.

8

David Thompson built the valle y’s first trading post, called Kootenae House, on the banks of the Columbia River , near Invermere. Fr om that base, he traded goods for pelts with the natives, and mapped and measured the mountains and streams in the area. He was the first white man to travel the full length of the river from its headwaters at Columbia Lake to Astoria, Or egon, on the Pacific Ocean. Wilmer, the hamlet just north of Inver mere, began attracting white settlers in the 1880s. Most were single men who had heard of a second mining boom in the ar ea (following the discover y of gold at Findla y Creek 20 years befor e), and came to work at the Paradise and Ptar migan mines. They travelled by steamboat on the Columbia River, there being no trains and few navigable roads at that time.

The tur n of the 20th centur y br ought an influx of British settlers, mainl y far ming families. T owns wer e laid out and busi nesses established. Banks, hotels, general stores and liver y stables pr eceded hospi tals, laundries and even the law . The firs t policeman arrived just in time to solve the area’s first murder. The towns gr ew and pr ospered, spur red on by the settlement plan of the Columbia Valley Ir rigated Fr uitlands Compan y, which encouraged gentlemen far mers from England and Scotland to take advantage of speed y immigration and low land prices. Edgewater, nine kilometr es nor th o f Radium Hot Springs, was settled b y Dr . Gaddes, a cattle rancher and veterinar y surgeon fr om the prairies who founded the Columbia Valley Ranches. In the earl y 1900s, the hamlet’s focus tur ned to for estry. The Edgewater Sawmill attracted workers fr om far and wide, spawning a community.

Athalmer, Invermere and W indermere developed on the hills and banks of beautiful Lake W indermere. Radium and Fair mont became widel y known for their natural hot springs. The V illage of Canal Flats, incorporated in 2004, is the valle y’s youngest municipality, and one of the youngest in British Columbia. In 1899, the CPR began employing Swiss mountain guides. The lur e of fr esh uncon quered peaks and the prospect of ex periencing the untouched wilder ness of an infan t country drew visitors from Europe and other parts of Nor th America. Tourism became popular. In 1915, the Kootenay Central Railr oad began operating a r egularly scheduled train ser vice between Golden and Cranbrook. In t he 20t h centur y, t he Co lumbia Valley grew and prospered. The economy is now considerabl y diversified from the lumber and minin g operations that brought settlers to the region so long ago. Tourism thrives and many Canadians, especially Calgarians, own seasonal homes in the valley.

To learn more about local history, visit t he W indermere Valley Museum in Invermere. The museum is a c luster of heritage buildings move d to t he site fr om ot her p laces. The main building is the old Lake Wi ndermere CPR station. Among the museum’s treasured artifacts ar e a dugout canoe ma de by an early S huswap native, a blunderbuss gun dating back to t he early fur traders, an d a copy o f David Thompson’s jour nal, of which only 500 copies were made before the plates were destroyed.

The History of

Radium Hot Springs

The Radium hot springs resulted from the unleashing of powerful forces that left their mark in heaving, tortured rocks. The earth’s crust cracked along a fault more than two kilometres deep, creating a shatter zone around the fault that lets groundwater seep close to the earth’s core. Sir George Simpson, Governor of the Hudson’s Bay Company, made the first recorded visit to the springs in 1841. In 1890, an Englishman named Roland Stuart purchased the springs for the bargain price of $160. In 1922, the property was expropriated and the springs became part of Kootenay National Park. Now the pools are managed by Parks Canada. Today, the Radium Hot Springs complex contains a hot soaking pool and a cool

16

swimming pool. The water enters the hot pool at a comfortable 39 degrees Celsius (103°F), and is kept close to that temperature. It is filtered and chlorinated. The temperature of the cool pool is kept at about 29 degrees Celsius (84°F). For the hardy, there is a hot tub kept at a steamy 44 degrees Celsius (114°F). The complex also houses the Pleiades Massage and Spa, a world-class day spa offering an array of massage and wellness treatments, a plunge pool and a steam room. A café with an outdoor patio is open in the summer months. The scenery around the complex is spectacular and the area is abundant with wildlife. For more information, visit www.radiumhotsprings.com.

History

The resort changed owners several times in the 20th century. William Heap Holland, an eccentric cotton millionaire from Manchester, England, is credited with recognizing the springs’ international potential. Dazzled by the beauty of the entire region, the dapper entrepreneur drafted the Columbia Valley’s first promotional brochure—and drew scores

of English tourists to the area. Starting in 1912, Holland harnessed the springs, built a swimming pool, erected the Fairmont Hot Springs Ranch Barn (which still stands), started a restaurant, opened a campground and built bungalows. A putting green, and tennis, badminton and tetherball courts soon followed. Holland bequeathed the resort to his family. In 1957, a group of investors that included Lloyd and Earl Wilder, brothers from Saskatchewan, bought the resort. Lloyd became its sole proprietor in 1965. He launched the resort’s first major expansion, a series of changes that realized William Holland’s vision of an international resort. Since 2007, the resort has been owned by Ken Fowler Enterprises. In 1887, George Geary homesteaded the land around the natural hot springs now known as Fairmont Hot Springs. He established a post office, a stagecoach depot, a horse ranch and a sawmill. Within three years, he sold the ranch and roadhouse to Sam and Helen Brewer, an adventurous couple from Indiana. In 1909, the Brewers retired and sold their holdings to John Barnard Hankey, who named it Fairmont Hotel Springs.

The V illage of Canal Flats was incor porated in 2004. It is the youngest municipality in the Columbia V alley. It was first called McGillivray’s Por tage by David Thompson, the legendar y explor er and mapmaker who passed through the area in 1808. In 1913 the post of fice chan ged the village’s name to reflect its histor y. That histor y is pr eserved in the r emains of a canal built in 1889 to connect the Kootenay River to Columbia Lake. The canal was part of a scheme by entrepreneur William Adolph Baillie-Grohman to breach Canal Flats and divert water from the upper Kootenay River into the Columbia system, thereby suf ficiently lowering t he level of Kootenay Lake to r eclaim the rich 48,000acre alluvial plain in the Cr eston area and open up a nor th-south navigational system from Golden to Montana. Due to the fear of flooding on the Columbia River, Baillie-Gr ohman had no choice but to install a lock system on t he canal, thus defeating his dream of water diversion. Only two s hips ever passe d through the canal: the vessel Gwendoline in 1895; an d the North Star in 1902.

Canal Flats is surrounded by beautiful provincial parks, includin g Whiteswan, T op of the W orld and Thunder Hill. The latte r offers spectacular views of Columbia Lake. Day Trips

North

Day tripping north from Radium Hot Springs

The first leg of the trip takes you through the Columbia River Wetlands, the largest continuous wetlands in North America. Next you’ll enjoy touring the peaceful communities of Edgewater, Spur Valley, Brisco and Spillimacheen. If you love chili, time your trip to coincide with Spilli Chili, the annual contest to make the valley’s best chili. It’s held every June. If you must play, and of course you must, there are two gorgeous golf courses where you can get in nine relatively quick holes: Edgewater Hilltop Par 3, and Spur Valley Greens. Be sure to stop at the Brisco General Store and the Spillimacheen Trading Post,

which is now a gift shop. Both stores are historic gems. Your next photo op will be the historic Galena Church, just five minutes north of Brisco. To drink in the majesty of Bugaboo Glacier Provincial Park, turn left on Brisco Road just before the general store. You’ll need fourwheel-drive for this adventure. Or, you can contact Canadian Mountain Holidays for instructions on how to reach their lodge by air. The Bugaboos are beautiful and rich in history. But they’re also rugged: The terrain is best suited to experienced mountaineers and powder skiers. In Golden you’ll have to be selective. There’s so much to do year-round: heli-skiing and cat skiing, back country climbing and hiking, fly fishing and golfing. You haven’t lived until you’ve soared to 4,000 feet on the gondola at Kicking Horse Resort—or tried whitewater rafting, hang gliding and parasailing. The Golden Visitor Centre has all the details.
