New Homes Your Guide to New Housing Developments in the Columbia Valley
Borrego Ridge Business Feature by Pioneer Staff In Spanish, Borrego means “wild sheep.” What could be more appropriate than naming Borrego Ridge after Radium’s trademark animal, the bighorn sheep, and all the wildness and natural beauty that they represent? This residential development by Schickendanz West, which also brought us Links Ridge and Elk Park Ranch, is nestled between the Purcell Mountains and the Rockies, northwest of the village of Radium Hot Springs. It’s a peaceful, spectacularly beautiful setting. And yet the village with all its urban conveniences is just minutes away. There are two immaculate 18hole golf courses—The Springs and Radium Resort— great shops and restaurants, and of course the natural hot pools for which Radium is known world-wide. “Radium is a quiet spot in the (Windermere) Valley,” says Scott Sauermann, area sales manager for Schickedanz West. “But we still have all the amenities that people want.” The 20 townhomes and 20 bungalow villas on Borrego Ridge were designed for the way we entertain today. The floor plans are wide open, with high ceilings and tall windows that let in plenty of natural light. These homes are alpine-elegant and user-friendly. The Purcell Townhomes have a spacious multilevel floor plan with 1,426 square feet of well-proportioned living space, including three bedrooms, three bathrooms, and a combined kitchen/formal dining room that is perfect for family gatherings. The multiple decks and ground-level patio maximize the views and ensure that you don’t miss a minute of mountain sunshine. The unspoiled basement has space for a family room, or a home office.
Spacious, multi-level homes offer plenty of room for relaxing and entertaining.

Continued from Page 1 The Columbia Villas have 1,158 square feet of living space on one level, with two bedrooms and two bathrooms. The great room has ten-foot ceilings and a gorgeous open kitchen. The unspoiled basement could be developed to yield two additional bedrooms and a theatre room. These exquisite bungalows have both a covered front porch and a west-facing deck. There are three finishing packages from which to choose: Pine, Spruce and Fir. A townhome with the basic Pine package—that includes such features as black appliances, laminate countertops and Berber carpet—can be purchased for just $324,900 plus GST. A fully upgraded bungalow villa, with features such as stainless steel appliances, granite and hardwood, is available for $504,900 plus GST. The exterior finish combines wood, stone and vinyl siding for low maintenance. Other features include a single-car garage with opener, a gas line hookup for the barbecue, access to high-speed Internet, and roughedin vacuum and home security. Heat is from a forced air propane furnace. All homes have a gas fireplace. The monthly condo fee ($115 for the townhomes and $136 for the villas) covers snow removal, landscaping, garbage collection, annual window cleaning, and building maintenance. It’s a low-maintenance lifestyle, ideal for year-round or recreational use. The four showhomes at Borrego Ridge are open for viewing. For information, call 1-250-342-5889, or 1-877-733-7932. Choose the right art for your home By Sally Waddington Pioneer Staff Rule number one when choosing a piece of art is: love it. That’s what local art experts insist new-home owners should consider first when deciding how to adorn their walls. “The most important thing is that you like the piece,” said Deanna Berrington from Invermere’s Artym Gallery. “More than the colour, more than the style, more than the artist, you’ve got to love it.” Heather Cuell, the owner of Effusion Art Gallery and Glass Studio in Invermere, agreed. “Choose art that you love, so you won’t tire of it,” she said. Of course, if you’re investing in an original artwork, you want everybody else to love it, too. So there are a few steps you can take to make sure your prized piece is shown off to its best advantage in your home. “Walk into a room and size up the space,” said Heather. “What type of art would you like to put in the space? Will it be freestanding, wall-mounted or built in? What will be the use of the room?” Heather suggested considering how large you want
the artwork to be, what medium you will look for, and what genre of art best suits your personal style. “The composition of the piece is best left to the individual because art reflects a person’s personality,” she added. Deanna’s tip is to bring a blueprint of your home to the gallery. “Sometimes we will go take a look at the house, and get a feel for what you like and what will work,” she said. “Photos are also great because they give us a visual feel for the space,” Heather said. “We can then make recommendations regarding placement of art pieces.” Once you have a rough idea of the artwork that will best suit your space, take a look in a gallery. “When people come in for the first time, we tell them to take a look around. If they find an artist they like, we can bring out more works by that artist. We try to have a showcase of all 65 artists on display,” Deanna said. There are some key places in the home where art will be really shown off: above a fireplace, in a dining room, above a bed, or in a two-storey stairwell. The biggest impression, however, can be made with art inside a home’s entrance. “An entrance piece can be so important because it sets the tone for the entire house,” Deanna said. “It is
the first thing guests see when they walk in.” “The entrance to a home is a great opportunity to use art as a reflection of your personal style,” Heather agreed. “Sculpture has a great presence in an entrance.” It’s a good idea to rearrange your artwork occasionally to refresh it. “Every time you move your artwork it gives the whole home a fresh look,” Deanna said. “As soon as the art starts fading into the walls, that’s when it’s time to rearrange.” But at the end of the day, no amount of planning takes precedence over that one, special piece that you just can’t pass by. “If you love something, you can usually make it work,” Heather said. “If you want it, you may regret not buying it later on. Even if you have to move things around, you will make it work.” Deanna agreed. “You’re going to change your furniture and paint your walls, but art you will keep forever.” Besides the two commercial galleries in Invermere, check out artwork at Pynelogs Cultural Centre, Village Arts Co-op on main street, and various private studios around the Columbia Valley. Where to store your stuff this winter By Cayla Gabruck Pioneer Staff
Ute Juras manages the newest storage facility, Stor edge.
With winter fast approaching, many people are facing a daunting decision; move their belongings back home or store them here in the Columbia Valley? Happily, there are several safe and secure places in the valley that can protect your things during the cold winter months, or any time of the year. Deck Properties Ltd., owned and operated by Beverley Deck and John Oostyen, is the valley’s oldest storage company and has been in business for 35 years. They offer hassle-free storage in self-enclosed units in Invermere’s Industrial Park. Deck Properties Ltd. will store any kind of household items, but does not store boats and recreational vehicles. Beverly said that their units are secure. Someone lives in an apartment on the property, so there is also someone on site all day. And Beverley and John themselves live in a house overlooking the property. Deck Properties Ltd. is located in Athalmer at 4340 Toby Creek Road and prices are approximately one dollar per square foot. For more information, call Beverley at (250) 342-3166. Stor edge, located near Windermere bordering
Highway 93/95, is the valley’s newest storage facility. It offers safe, secure self-storage and specializes in boat, recreational vehicle and vehicle storage. Stor edge’s facility has a combination of heated and unheated units with drive-up access, and both an open and covered recreational vehicle storage area. Boxes and packing supplies are available. The business also offers shipping/receiving with Purolator. Stor edge also provides 24-hour state-of-the-art security including camera surveillance and controlled access to ensure peace of mind for the safety of your belongings. “All units are individually alarmed with access to the site being both controlled and monitored,” said Ute Juras, facility manager. Stor edge has a professional on site from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to assist with all your storage needs. The business offers a variety of options, starting at $69 per month. For more information, contact Ute or one of her professionals at (250) 342-4494. Chuck Newhouse owns and operates Newhouse Multi-Storage, located at 450 Laurier Street in Athalmer, with climate-controlled units. For information, call 250-342-3637. Boat and recreational vehicle storage is also available at various locations around the valley.
