BEAR JAMS IN THE PARK
3 lot 4616
In the past month, there have been countless sightings of two mother bears with cubs in Kootenay National Park. Photographer Dani Tschudin snapped this family by Olive Lake last month. Park superintendent Pam Veinotte asks drivers to slow down when they see bears at the roadside, but continue driving by to avoid “bear jams”. If you have cell phone coverage, call Parks Canada at 403-762-1470 so they can send out a patrol or use flashing signs to alert drivers.

Dance held for Invermere hospital’s emergency room First Nation dancers gathered in Invermere’s Pothole Park on Monday, August 2nd to help raise funds for improvements to the hospital’s emergency room. The event was organized by Invermere’s Joe Bruce, who spent time in the hospital this year and wanted to show his gratitude. “I’ve seen the dedication of these doctors and nurses,” he said. “They don’t care where you’re from or what colour you are.” The event featured local Shuswap grass dancer Jeremy Stevens, jingle dress dancer Megan Eugene, women’s fancy dancer Cayla Eugene, and Quintin Eugene, as well as Siksika men’s traditional dancer Leon Cranebear of Calgary. Clarissa Stevens, who organizes the Shuswap dance group, said, “It’s phenomenal to see the pride come out of the kids when they dance.” Pictured, above: spectators joined hands with the dancers in a traditional welcome dance; left; local Shuswap dancer Megan Eugene in her jingle dress. Shmigelsky seeking NDP nomination By Kelsey Verboom Pioneer Staff Former Invermere mayor Mark Shmigelsky has resigned from the B.C. Liberal party and announced his intention to pursue the New Democrat Party nomination for parliament in the Kootenay-Columbia riding. Mark Shmigelsky “I’ve been a lifelong federal Liberal,” Mr. Shmigelsky said. “When I retired from local politics, I was out of politics completely. About six months ago, people started asking me if I was interested in running for the NDP.” After lengthy discussions with his family, his wife Robin told him, “You’re grinning from ear-to-ear – I can tell you want to do it,” Mr. Shmigelsky said. “After two years out of politics, it started to feel right. We did all the comparisons between parties. We were very careful and made sure we weren’t compromising any personal values. “I certainly fit within the NDP party. I consider

myself more of a centrist – more in the middle with a balance between fiscal and social responsibility.” Mr. Shmigelsky, 40, said he believes people will support him because of his ability to fairly represent the interests of the riding, not solely because of his party choice. “It’s alright to make the switch,” he said. “I’m a strong believer in representation, and this gives me the opportunity to do that. I think as a member of parliament, the job at the end of the day is to represent everybody in the riding, and I want to do that. “I’m an average everyday Canadian, I guess, just a bit more active in politics. I don’t feel I’ll be criticized by people who are going to support who I am as a person. The average everyday person doesn’t believe in parties, they believe in representation, and I think that’s something I’m able to do.” Although Mr. Shmigelsky has been involved in the Liberal party in the past, the NDP best represents the interests of the riding, he said. “I had a great relationship with them [the Liberals], and I still have a lot of friends in the Liberal party. But they [the Liberals] haven’t been able to provide the representation of the average Canadian. So there’s a number of reasons why I’ve switched parties, and I’m quite comfortable.” The first step is to win the nomination, Mr. Shmi-
By Brian Geis Pioneer Staff Following an unusual investigation, a Windermere man pleaded guilty in Banff Provincial Court to possession of a firearm in Banff National Park and was fined $1,000. According Park Warden Steve Anderson, park officials found an image of a man carrying a shotgun while sorting through photos taken by a mo-
gelsky said. “If we can do that, we aren’t going to take anything for granted. It’ll be a fun exercise, a fun battle, and then after that try to represent the riding.” In February, current Kootenay-Columbia Conservative MP Jim Abbott announced his plans to retire after the next federal election, which will end his 17year representation of the riding. Mr. Shmigelsky said that Mr. Abbott’s retirement creates an exciting time that will leave the political playing field “wide open.” “I’m excited about it. I think it’s a wonderful time to be a voter,” he said. Noting his respect for Jim Abbott, Mr. Shmigelsky added, “I want to strive to do even better than the last person. For me, it’s about getting down to what an MP should do, which is represent the people on the hot-button issues.” Mr. Shmigelsky was on Invermere council for 15 years, nine of which he served as mayor. His third term as mayor ended in 2008. “I just had a remarkable time doing that,” he said of his time on council. “My family and I were fortunate enough to have tremendous support from all political spectrums. I’m hoping that’s still there, and I’m encouraging people to get a hold of me and help us go further with this.”
tion-sensing wildlife camera. With the help of B.C. conservation officers, the warden was able to identify the Windermere resident, who took responsibility for the crime. The charge itself is rare enough, Warden Anderson explained, without being able to recall the last time it has happened, but the successful conviction was even less likely, he said. The May 20th incident occurred at Spray Pass on the way to Leman Lake.
Warden Anderson said the individual was not hunting, but carried the weapon as a measure of protection against bears. Transporting a firearm through a national park is illegal, he said, unless it is disassembled in a case in the trunk of your car. Anyone who witnesses a similar incident is encouraged to call 1-888-WARDENS OR 403-7621470, 24 hours a day.

Over the past long weekend, police responded to 39 calls for service. • On July 30th, the detachment received a complaint from a Fairmont man that his dog had been attacked by a neighbour’s dog. His dog required stitches in its back and tubes to drain fluid. The man reported the incident to the regional dog control officer, who stated she was seeking a destruction order based on other complaints she had received regarding the same dog. • On July 30th, Columbia Valley RCMP responded to a report that approximately $100 worth of gas was stolen from the forestry compound on 4th Avenue in Invermere. The man said the theft occurred between 10 p.m. and 1 p.m.. on July 30th, and said two regular red gas cans were stolen from a fire truck, which was in a gated compound. Methods to improve security around the compound were discussed. • On July 31st at approximately 2 a.m., police were notified of a “man down”. Members attended and found a male laying on the pavement who was very intoxicated. He had been wrestling with another male when he fell backwards off the curb, striking his head. Ambulance attendants treated the victim and transported him to Invermere hospital for a laceration to the back of his head. Witnesses said an assault did not take place and that the male simply lost his balance. • On July 31st at around 8:30 a.m., RCMP attended the Springs Golf Course for a vandalism/mischief complaint. Police were taken to two golf holes where two putting greens showed significant damage from an axe or similar object. It appeared human feces were left on one green. Employees indicated the last golfers were off the green around 9 p.m. and the damage was noticed around 6:30 the next morning. Police continue to investigate. • On July 31st at 9:48 a.m., police were notified of an attempted robbery at The Bargain Shop on 13th
Street, Invermere. Police were nearby and attended immediately. Employees told police an unknown man entered the store wearing a white balaclava, yellow jacket and had what appeared to be the ‘butt-end’ of a gun sticking out of the jacket. The man stated, “I want my money – where is it? Give it to me.” After employees told the man there was no money, he left heading down 8th Avenue towards the beach. Local businesses with external video surveillance will be providing assistance as police continue to investigate. • On July 31st at 8:48 p.m., RCMP received report of an intoxicated man on Kootenay #3 Road in Windermere. Police located the male laying in the ditch. The police detected a strong odour of liquor and noticed the man was slurring his speech. The man was arrested for being drunk in a public place and lodged in Columbia Valley RCMP Detachment cells. He was released once sober and served a violation ticket of $115 for Public Intoxication under the B.C. Provincial Liquor Control and Licencing Act. • On July 31st at 11:18 p.m., Valley Hawk Security requested police attendance to the Lakeview Meadows private beach to assist in the removal of more than 100 youths who were refusing to leave an unauthorized party. The youths, who appeared to all be from Calgary, scattered upon police arrival. • On July 31st at 10:38 p.m., patrolling RCMP observed a white Chevrolet Celebrity swerving in its lane, crossing the fog line and driving 60 kilometres per hour in a 90 kilometre per hour speed zone south of Radium. Police conducted a traffic stop and noticed the female driver showed several signs of impairment. The driver refused to provide a breath sample, and was given a notice to appear in Invermere court and a Roadside Driving Prohibition. • On August 1st, police were dispatched to assist with a truck on fire. Upon their arrival they found the truck engulfed in flames. The truck is registered to a local male whom police have made attempts to locate without success. This investigation is ongoing. Lot 4616 division sent to province By Kate Irwin Pioneer Staff An important step forward could soon be taken with Lot 4616, the long-debated piece of Crown land on the southern edge of Invermere. Invermere council has recently sent an application to the Agricultural Land Commission to have the lot excluded from the Agricultural Land Reserve. If approved the move will allow the Shuswap and Akisqnuk First Nations and the District of Invermere to begin carving up the land, splitting the use between public park and development. “The plan is to divide the land up with around a 50/50 split,” said Lorraine Schmidt, of the Integrated Land Management Bureau. “If anything, it will lean a little more heavily towards park land than land for development.” The question of what to do with the lot, which is about 50 hectares — 124 acres — has been ongoing for the past six years. In 2004 the district applied to receive the entire piece of land, fending off interest from several real estate developers who wanted to purchase the lot. The area was deemed too valuable by the provincial government, who currently owns it, leading to a
MAKING PROGRESS — This map shows proposed boundaries within Invermere’s Lot 4616, beside CastleRock Estates. partnership between Invermere council and the local First Nations to develop some land and leave the rest as public park.
“What made negotiations somewhat complex in the beginning was that our goal was 100 percent park land and First Nations’ goal was economic development,” said Invermere’s Mayor Gerry Taft. “I think everyone is now comfortable with the current agreement and there is no perception of one side trying to take advantage.” District Lot 4616 is a prime piece of Invermere acreage located on the western side of Lake Windermere, with stunning views out over the lake. The current proposal is to retain the eastern land for the district’s park with development confined to the CastleRock Estates side of the plot. A decision on the type of development to take place is on hold until the land is released from the Agricultural Land Reserve. “Any developer will tell you that development is market lead,” said Dean Martin, Chief Executive Officer of the Shuswap Band’s Kinbasket Development Corporation. “At the time of land release, if we decide on some type of development there certainly has to be a profit margin after paying for the land.” The application to exclude the lot from agricultural land could take several months to be processed, but it is highly likely to be approved, according to Mayor Taft.

Credit where credit is due
Historical Lens
By Brian Geis Pioneer Editor Listening to the chatter on the radio scanner sitting on the corner of my desk is always informative and entertaining. In the week leading up to Invermere’s inaugural Summerlude, it was interesting to follow preparations underway by municipal staff. Later that day, I crossed the street to find Wildsight staff spilling out of their office onto the sidewalk to prepare for the revival of the Lake Windermere Regatta. It reminded me how many people take on extra work — above and beyond their already busy schedules — to help organize and stage the valley’s ambitious schedule of festivals and events. Having lived in towns where no one really does anything beyond what is absolutely necessary, I am always impressed and inspired by the armies of volunteers who donate their time and effort to put on a show around here. Time after time, municipal council and staff, the Arts Council, the Invermere Business Committee, Wildsight, the service organizations, valley clubs and societies, area businesses, performers and hundreds and hundreds of volunteers — ticket-takers and grubslingers, judges and announcers, showmen and stewards — get up early and stay out late to set them up, see them through and clean up afterwards. In the interest of giving credit where credit is due, I for one say good show and thanks for the effort! If you regret not having thanked one of them personally, don’t worry. We’re now only midway through the festival season with some of the best to come. Never to miss a chance to quote Randy Bachman, “You ain’t seen nothing yet!”
Much moved cabin In this 1956 photo, Annie Blanchard Crook revisits a tourist cabin her husband, Charles, and son, Ray, built. At the time it was serving as housing for the fire look-out in Kootenay National Park. The top of the fire tower can be seen in the background. It now stands on museum grounds in Invermere, above. Photos submitted by Ray Crook
Cabin’s long road to museum Submitted by Ray Crook The Windermere District Historical Society started its collection of buildings in April 1964 by acquiring a small log cabin from Kootenay National Park. At that time, it was located at Kaye’s Cabin warden station, five miles east of the Radium pool. It was originally built by my father and myself and used for tourist accommodation at our Rocky Mountain Camp, now Crook’s Meadow, 21 miles east of the park gate. This property was sold to the Crown in September 1956. Kootenay Park moved this cabin about a quarter-mile north to be used as quarters for the look-out person, as a fire tower had
been erected at that point. After that it was moved to Kaye’s Cabin. In 1964, the Historical Society obtained permission from the Village of Invermere to place this cabin on the southern rim of Pothole Park, across from where AG Valley Foods is now. I built a cement foundation for it and it was moved to Invermere by Ian Weir on May 30th, 1964. It was officially opened as a museum by MLA James Chabot and village chairman A.E. Erickson on May 23rd, 1965. By this time the building had been moved three times and was to be moved a fourth time. It is now part of the Windermere District Historical Society’s museum complex.

LETTERS Thanks to Tour of the Arts volunteers
Dear Editor:
Thank you to Linda Tutty and all her super volunteers from the Columbia Valley Arts who — very professionally — assisted with the Tour of the Arts garden tour at our home on Sunday, August 1st. You are a very organized group of people! A special thank you to John Cronin and the Dry Gulch Ramblers — who provided lovely music for the event — and all the people who displayed their
art work at our home. Also, thanks to our neighbours Al and George for all their help and support, John and Margo from Rockies Pizza for delivering the delicious food for our volunteers, and, last but not least, the 675 people who actually took the time to drive to our home and view the wonderful art work in our yard. Even with the rain, the event was a huge success. Thank you! Chester and Pat Allen Radium Hot Springs

Harper’s crisis is a ruse Dear Editor: Role-model RCMP Commissioner William Elliot generated huge mainstream-media attention for his rudeness to RCMP brass. Yet, this very same media ignored much evidence of RCMP human-rights infractions at Toronto’s G20 conference. Rubber bullets, tear gas, provocation, beatings, and unwarranted detainment don’t make headlines like: “yelling” and “throwing papers”. Corporate-owned media has let us down again. Police actions at the G8/20 show some parallels to U.S. Special Forces field manual, FM 3-05.202. Its operations are outlined here: pervasive surveillance, censorship, press control, restrictions on labor unions and political parties, suspending habeas corpus, warrantless searches, detainment without charge, bribery, employing terrorists, false flag operations, concealing human rights abuses from journalists, and extensive use of “psychological operations” (propaganda) to make these and other “population and resource control”
measures palatable. Harper’s agenda desperately needs a “crisis”. It’s an old diversion tactic. For this mission Harper has appointed key people: Commissioner Elliot in RCMP, Director Fadden at CSIS, and pit-bull Peter MacKay in Defence (if they can’t create a crisis, who can?). Sounds farfetched? Maybe, yet this tactic is standard procedure in many parts of the world and the U.S. conveniently keeps its people in a permanent state of crisis, with “paranoia” a growth industry. “Political bullying” is another tactic Harper is not above — not the usual one country against another, but the more insidious bullying of its own people, its cabinet ministers and civil servants. Forced resignations, character attacks and strategic appointments have muzzled information flow from ministries in health care, defence, media, environment, energy, and now the census. So much for “open and transparent”. Bryan Stawychny Edgewater

Uncle Elmer loved Bull Riding Dear Editor: The 12th annual Bull Riding in the Rockies was an enjoyable event this summer. We have been attending this event for many years as a family, and our Uncle Elmer Spiry comes along to enjoy the show. Every year, the staff and security have been very helpful to ensure that our uncle is well placed to view the performance. The location where the event was held this year was accommodating for all ages to enjoy the show. Our uncle
said that he particularly enjoyed the outdoor arena this year. He was able to hear and see the entire performance, as well as visit with many locals who approached him. As a former bull rider in his earlier years, Uncle Elmer said the event was the highlight of his summer, and he hopes to be able to attend again next year. Thanks for all the hard work it takes to put on an event like this. Our uncle thoroughly enjoyed it. Darla Spiry, Athalmer

Movie Review: Kick Ass who are way more effective than he is at what they do. Big Daddy (Nicholas Cage), a caped crusader who bears more than a passing resemblance to a certain dark knight, has trained his young daughter, Hit Girl (Chloe Moretz), to become a super-efficient fighting machine. Their target is the evil empire of murderous drug kingpin Frank D’Amico. Kick Ass is the most recent adaptation of a comic book series to hit the video stores, and is based on a series written by Mark Millar (Wanted) and illustrated by the prolific John Romita
Reviewed by Dave Sutherland Kick Ass lives up to its title. It’s a demented actioneer about an ambitious fan boy named Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson), who decides to live out his fantasy of becoming a superhero. Dave feels strongly about righting wrongs and, incidentally, becoming more appealing to girls. Calling himself Kick Ass, Dave’s initial attempts at super-heroics are hampered by his lack of fighting ability, but he does attract an internet fan base and garners the attention of a father/daughter team of crime fighters

Jr. The screenplay was adapted by Jane Goldman and Matthew Vaughn, and directed by Vaughn, who’s earlier work includes Layer Cake and Stardust. There’s plenty of mind-boggling, physics-defying action in Kick Ass. The story is a lot of fun, and there is a fair amount of wry humour, but, be warned, the story does take some dark turns. Kick Ass earned an R rating, but not for violence. Rather, it was for the profane dialogue that issues from the mouth of its 11-year-old protagonist. Some of the lines uttered by Hit Girl would curl the toes of a sailor.

Radium mayor to open wine bar By Kelsey Verboom Pioneer Staff Radium couple Dee and Rod Conklin are transforming their home into Radium’s first-ever wine bar. CasaVino Wine Bar will be a place for people to sit by the fireplace or on the garden patio with a glass of wine and a plate of local cheeses. “It’s not a late-night bar,” Ms. Conklin, RadiDee Conklin um’s mayor, said. “It’s just a place to end your evening or start your evening – almost a European café style that people think of when they think of Paris, just in Radium.” The wine bar will be tucked just off of Radium’s Main Street at the edge of Legend’s Field in the bot-
tom half of the Conklins’ newly renovated home. With a 90-person capacity, customers will be able to wander outdoors and sit on a patio, or in the Conklin’s large, modern garden. Pâté, local cheeses and sushi will accompany CasaVino’s wine selection. “We aren’t a licensed kitchen, so we will serve cold appetizers that go well with wine,” explained Ms. Conklin. “We will also have a featured dessert each evening, so people can come down after dinner for dessert and a glass of wine.” The Conklins plan to open CasaVino in time for the holidays in mid-December, but are currently awaiting the results of their liquor license application. Surrounding residents and business owners have until August 31st to comment on the proposal. Ms. Conklin said she has received positive feedback from surrounding businesses, and that other restaurant owners have expressed their interest in sending customers to CasaVino for a glass of wine while they wait for an open table. The idea for a wine bar has been fermenting for
the past five years, Ms. Conklin said. “Radium is a walking town and there has been a number of people who’ve talked to me over the years about how, when they walk by our house, they think about how it would be nice to sit out in the garden. “Rod and I are often out on the patio with wine or coffee, so we thought it would be a good fit.” The Conklins have been taking courses about wine, and are working towards the goal of Rod becoming a sommelier. They plan to carry a large selection of B.C. wines, as well as Chilean, Argentinean, Australian, and American. “It may not be when we open, but by next spring we will be well into an amazing inventory of wine,” Ms. Conklin said. “As people share their wine experiences with us, it’ll be really fun to expand using suggestions from customers.” CasaVino’s planned hours are from 4 to 10 p.m. on Tuesday through Saturday during the spring and summer, and Thursday, Friday, and Saturday in the wintertime.

EXHIBITION “REFLECTIONS” AUGUST 7th to AUGUST 16th RECEPTION AUGUST 7th 6-9pm Artists in attendance INSPIRED BY NATURE — Rick Berg’s painting of marshland is one of the works on display at the Effusion Gallery from August 7th to 16th.
Reflections exhibition on show at Effusion
Submitted by Effusion Art Gallery Contemplation is at the heart of the Reflections exhibition showing at Effusion Art Gallery from August 7th to 16th. Please join us for the opening of this stunning exhibition on Saturday, August 7th, at 10 a.m. Following is an evening reception from 6 to 9 p.m. Featured artists are Tresa Gibson, Jana Milne, Sharon Quirke, Rick Berg, Andrea Pratt, Virginia Boulay and David Calles. We asked the artists to reveal something which may not be known about their technique and inspirations. “Energy and excitement,” Tresa Gibson said, talking about what inspires her art. Tresa enjoys creating works that balance colour and depth, best expressing herself with a palette knife using oil on canvas. Rick Berg revealed his work is influenced by nature. He is inspired by the special light, landscapes and wildlife found between the prairies and mountains. “My impressionistic paintings satisfy my more structured side, while my abstract paintings give me a real thrill,” Jana Milne revealed. “I love to alternate between the styles and mediums to keep things fresh.” Preferring to work with oils, Jana has a remarkable aptitude for colour, making bold, bright compositions with diverse subject matters. Warm, golden light and bold brush strokes define Sharon Quirke’s canvases, making her paintings inviting and dramatic. She surprised Effusion staff, saying:
“I like to look at my work upside down and sideways before deciding if it’s finished.” Other artists involved in the exhibition also had some unusual secrets to tell about the way they create their paintings. “I work backwards,” Andrea Pratt revealed. “I do this with landscapes and more abstract work. Most artists build forward from a background image, clarifying and refining as they go. But my mind works in visual reverse and I construct the foreground and then work into the background.” Andrea uses a layered approach to her paintings which often examine time, growth and life cycles, through her use of symbolic imagery and patterns on a segmented and flattened picture plane. “My technique still is reminiscent of watercolour in that I don’t use the acrylic pigment very heavily,” admitted Virginia Boulay. “Because of my graphic design influences I use very clean-lined contours for my mountain scenes and very quiet (albeit bold) sweeps of colour in my works depicting the prairies.” In 1998, Virginia discovered east-end Saskatchewan, which she is continually drawn to for the sweeping vistas and beautiful valleys. David Calles is originally from Argentina and now lives in Victoria. His work explores use of colour, form and traditional Italian cane techniques. Join us over the weekend to view these stunning works of art. Effusion Gallery is in downtown Invermere at 1033 7th Avenue, phone 250-341-6877. Visit the online gallery at www.effusionartgallery.com.

Gowling back for Pynelogs show Submitted by Kate McKenna Pynelogs Cultural Centre Pynelogs Cultural Centre is already gearing up for its next show, on display from August 10th to 22nd, featuring the work of Paula Cravens, Jessica Gowling, Jane Murray, Pauline Newhouse and Tracy Szekely. Paula Cravens, whose Avian Alphabet collection is currently on display at Pynelogs, received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Eastern Illinois University, where her major area of concentration was ceramics with a minor in painting. She experiments with acrylic and collage elements, while being drawn toward the use of colour and texture. Her style drifts between a loose and painterly style and a more ‘topographic’ method, outlining colour blocks to produce a flat graphic work. Her main inspiration is the wildlife that she encounters on a daily basis, as well as old rusty vehicles, vintage photographs, cowgirls, horses, and bold women. Jessica Gowling grew up between Windermere and Calgary, and recently completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Print Media at the Alberta College of Art and Design. She constantly looks for ways to express her interests and passions with others, and as a result “her creations are an exploration of her life experiences and vivid visuals that she has encountered.” Jessica currently works as a print maker and print media artist; her specialty lies in intaglio, silk screen, lithography, and book arts. She chose Print Media because of its rich history, attention to materials, and constant challenges that arise through the process.
Jane Murray’s paintings centre on the impermanence of the human body and its connection to the ecosystem. She creates paintings that speak about renewing the connection to other species, the air, water, earth, moon and sun. She works with acrylics, tempera, ink, and water, often all in the same piece. “The finished painting is a synthesis of concept-based intentions executed with intuitive process.” Jane’s own body gestures are a source for the series of paintings. Pauline Newhouse was born and raised in Assiniboia, Saskatchewan, trained as a nurse at the Regina Grey Nuns Hospital, and has been ‘potting’ since the 1970s. Pauline then studied Fine Arts at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, majoring in sculpture, and has had her work exhibited for the past 35 years. She has been showing her work at Pynelogs since her move to Invermere in 1985, and her clay works are both functional and sculptural. Born in Simcoe, Ontario, Tracy Szekely recently moved from Calgary to Invermere. She is featured with works of the world’s best artists, and some of her pieces have been featured in The Calgary Sun. Tracy has found success both with private sales and ribbon awards as a result of participating in various shows and competitions. She is primarily self-taught and paints mainly with oils, and has recently explored formal instruction. She is constantly inspired by the world around her. The opening event will be held on Wednesday, August 11th from 7 to 9 p.m. at Pynelogs Cultural Centre, in Invermere (250-342-4423).

. . . RCMP Report: continued from Page 4 • On August 1st at 3:15 a.m., RCMP attended to a single vehicle collision on Westside Road near Invermere. Upon attendance, police found a locked black 1999 Ford Explorer in the ditch. Police searched the surrounding area but did not find any occupants. It is believed the occupants hiked or received a ride from the collision location. Alcohol is believed to be a factor. • On August 1st, RCMP responded to Kootenay Park Lodge, which had been broken into sometime overnight. A safe had been opened with what appeared to be a crowbar, and approximately $10,000 in Canadian/U.S. currency, as well as credit card imprints, had been taken. Entry was gained when a locked sliding window of the office where the safe was located was forced open. Photos were taken and police continue to investigate. • On August 2nd at around 2:33 a.m., police were dispatched to a fight in front of Bud’s Bar. Police arrived to find three people who were heavily contaminated with what is believed to be bear spray. Bud’s management did not see what had happened. Given the condition of those contaminated with bear spray, there was no way a coherent statement could be obtained at the time. All parties were told they would be contacted later for statements. Police continue to investigate. • On August 2nd, RCMP received complaint of

an attempted break-and-enter to the Mountainside Market in Radium. The owner reported that someone had attempted to gain entry to the building overnight by smashing through the back cinder-block wall. A sledge hammer, hand saw and pry bar were located on the ground in front of the hole. Entry was not gained as there were pipes and a water tank blocking the entry. Damage to the wall and pipes is estimated to be $2,000. The objects left at the scene were seized for forensic examination. • On August 2nd, police responded to a complaint of a break-and-enter on 5th Avenue, Invermere. An Invermere couple had been away camping, and upon their return noticed their front door had been forced open. A laptop, two chain saws, and $600 were reported missing. The money was taken from a glass jar, which is being fingerprinted. The couple both suspect the husband’s brother, as he is known to break into places, and has also stolen from them in the past. Police continue to investigate. • On August 2nd, police received notification of a found blue and white Pelican brand (Canadian Tire) paddle boat in the 1000 block of Nappe Road in Windermere. Police could not locate hull identification numbers or serial numbers on the boat. If this boat sounds like one you may have lost, please contact the local detachment. Anyone with information regarding these offences is asked to contact the local RCMP or Crimestoppers.

KNEE-DEEP – Jen Reagan of Golden attended last year’s community weed pull in Radium. Photo submitted
Wildsight hosts weed pull By Kelsey Verboom Pioneer Staff A group of volunteers are joining gardeninggloved hands in a community weed pull to remove invasive plant species from sensitive areas surrounding the Columbia River wetlands near Radium. The weed pull is being coordinated by Wildsight, which also runs an in-depth program to research, map and monitor invasive plants in the Columbia Wetlands and the west bench of the Columbia Valley. Invasive species such as common tansy and Canada thistle are encroaching in the native plant ecology of the Columbia River wetlands and degrading the overall quality of the area, said event coordinator Rachel Darvill. “By pulling them, we can help maintain native plant growth and a healthy ecology,” she said. The group is searching for more volunteers to join the pull. Last year’s group of 15 volunteers helped remove enough common tansy to fill a pick-up truck. “This year we’ll return to a huge patch that we pulled last year to mop up re-emerging growth,” Ms. Darvill said. “Don’t worry if you don’t know a tansy from a fir tree – we’ll be joined by members of the East Kootenay Invasive Plant Council to help us identify the plants.” Volunteers will be provided with gloves and garbage bags, as well as snacks and refreshments. Anyone interested in helping can meet Tuesday, August 10th at 9 a.m. at Forsters Landing Road, just past the mill on the north side of the road before it intersects with the Columbia River wetlands. Call 250-344-4961 for further details.

A partnership of developers want to turn the crossroads into a destination for valley visitors. The junction of Highway 93/95 and Athalmer Road, according to John Newton and Pedro Cebulka, is exactly where the business community needs to go in order to thrive. “It’s time to interconnect local businesses; bring them together in one place and work collectively to achieve the same goals through sales and marketing strategies and other cooperative efforts in the most ideal location,” John Newton of High Country Properties commented. John and Pedro are establishing a new business market at the Invermere crossroads. John says the location is ideal because every single visitor to the area has to pass by the intersection. Also, traffic passing through will be more inclined to stop, as the centre will include a refreshment stand, gift and artisan shops, public washrooms and an entertainment gazebo. The concept is to have similar attractive elements as Coomb’s Market does on Vancouver Island, he said. John and Pedro developed Black Forest Village at the crossroads and have been involved in other projects as well. The area will be left unpaved to create a rustic appeal and have a grassy picnic area and small park for children to play. John says there will be ample room for parking and it will include visitor information. “The Columbia Valley is perfectly positioned at this time for the projected growth of this region with respect to tourism. The economy is at a turning point and we need to be prepared for the potential this represents,” John said, adding that, “we are confident that the business community’s growth and development will flourish, but we need to work together to make this happen.” The planning stages for the market are well underway with Statesmen (Pine Ridge Mountain Resort) and Stoneset Equities (Vista Del Lago Resort) involved. The two companies will have structures at the crossroads by mid-August. High Country Properties and a few others, such as Dusk Building Systems, will also participate in the Crossroads Market. “Businesses throughout the valley and at Panorama have been spending far too many years working independently when ultimately we want to achieve the very same goals. We feel the unification of efforts will work well for everyone,” John said.

Record numbers for this year’s Tour of the Arts Submitted by Lynda Tutty Tour of the Arts Committee Thunder rumbling through the Columbia Valley early on Sunday morning was the last thing the 2010 Tour of the Arts Committee wanted to hear. Months of planning went into the self-guided tour featuring 50 artists in beautiful garden settings. The big day had finally arrived and it was threatening to be a wash-out. In spite of the steady rain, the artists and a small army of volunteers carried on. Shelters were reinforced to keep valuable artwork dry and golf umbrellas protected artists. Organizers worried that art lovers would not brave the wet weather to attend the tour, which is now in its third year, but just after the gates opened, the drizzle disappeared, visitors arrived in droves and eventually the sun shone. The 2010 Tour of the Arts recorded attendance of more than 750 visitors, up about 100 from last year’s event. Although numbers are still being finalized, the Tour appears to have been a successful fundraiser for the Columbia Valley Arts Council. Artists who displayed their work were very pleased with the opportunity to interact with so many people who appreciate art. “It was a wonderful event,” said painter Paula Cra-
vens. “There were so many positive comments from visitors.” And visitors not only enjoyed meeting and learning about the art. Many of them bought pieces that will have a special place in their homes. Five stunning gardens were the backdrop for the Tour. The homes of Elizabeth and Joe Klein, Pat and Chester Allen, Dee and Rod Conklin, Renee and Forrest Estby as well as Elk Park Ranch’s Upper Ranch provided spectacular locations for the artwork. “The property owners worked so hard on their gardens so they’d be perfect for tour day,” said Nora Efford, a tour committee member. “The properties looked magnificent.” The real heroes of the Tour of the Arts are the volunteers – all 110 of them. Artists and visitors alike called them “helpful” and “cheerful”, with one guest adding: “They did everything they could to make the day enjoyable.” The 2010 Tour of the Arts concluded with a reception at the Springs Golf Course, sponsored by the Radium Resort. This spectacular setting high on the cliffs overlooking the Columbia Valley wetlands and the Purcell Mountains was the perfect way to conclude an amazing day of enjoying art in our beautiful — and sunny — Columbia Valley.

Woman walks for cancer aid By Kelsey Verboom Pioneer Staff Invermere woman Rachel Griffith is tightening up her shoelaces and walking for two days to raise $2,000 for women’s cancer research. Rachel, 25, is participating in the upcoming Weekend to End Women’s Cancers in Vancouver, and will walk 60 kilometres in support of the cause. The event, which raised $2.9 million last year, generates funds for the B.C. Cancer Foundation. “I feel like I can make a difference by taking part in the walk, Rachel said. “I also feel that the growing prevalence of cancer in our society has to be addressed, and getting up and walking to make people aware and work to prevent and cure it is one thing I can do to fight it. Rachel, who grew up in Invermere, is finishing her Education degree at the University of British Columbia, and hopes to return to the valley as a substitute teacher in the fall. She was inspired to join the fund-raising effort after losing her grandmother to lymphoma in 2008. “While this isn’t specifically a ‘women’s’ cancer, I saw firsthand how cancer can really devastate the body and mind, Rachel explained.
“She lost her healthy, active, adventurous lifestyle so quickly, and I would not wish this on anyone. Whether it be lymphoma or breast cancer, I want to do something so that neither myself nor anyone I know has to experience what she did. Rachel hopes her participation in the event will inspire people to do what they can to support the fight against cancer. “I want people to know that we are all capable of helping the people around us and that we are all vulnerable to these diseases, she said. “I know that I’m not safe from cancer, but I hope that by participating in this event I can help to change this. Event participants can choose to direct their donor funds towards research for breast cancer, gynecological cancers, or a discovery fund for other cancers that impact women. Rachel will be giving to the discovery fund. She’s been busy campaigning to her friends and family and volunteering her time selling tickets to a variety of fund-raising events. Her goal is to raise at least $2,000, and she currently has around $1,000 with less than two weeks until the walk. To donate and help Rachel with her journey, email rachelfgriffith@gmail.com.

Arena revamp due to finish on time By Kate Irwin Pioneer Staff The Eddie Mountain Memorial Arena renovation is on track for completion by the end of August, just in time for the start of the hockey season. The $840,000 revamp began the week after the arena closed on March 10th, and currently there are still two to three weeks of work left. The renovations include a new concrete slab underneath the ice, which will improve the skating surface, making it much smoother for skaters. The ice rink’s cooling system has also had an overhaul, with all new piping installed which will make the cooling system underneath the rink more energy efficient. “We are really getting the building back into condition,” said arena manager Phyllis Dubielewicz. “Our target is not to interrupt the hockey programs that go on here. We’re really planning on opening again by the end of August, barring some disaster.” The arena, which was built between 1974 and 1975, has been used to teach generations of Invermere residents to skate and play hockey. The replacement of the ice base will give the rink a brand new surface for the
first time since it opened nearly 40 years ago. The renovation also includes a modern-day upgrade, the insertion of a lift to give wheelchair users access to the upper viewing area. “We have probably two to two and a half weeks of work left, with a whole bunch of stuff still to do,” Ms. Dubielewicz added. “At the moment we’ve still got holes where there aren’t supposed to be holes.” The renovations have been made possible through a $375,000 grant from the provincial Towns for Tomorrow program and $215,000 from the Recreational Infrastructure Canada Grant Program. The hockey season at the arena is set to begin with the Columbia Valley Rockies Hockey training camps on August 27th. “The Eddie Mountain Memorial Arena project is nearing completion and we are on schedule and on budget,” said Loree Duczek of the Regional District of East Kootenay. “We will be issuing a news release regarding the project and the arena opening date once the lift work is complete and we have a firm date established.” For more on programs available at the arena call 250-342-6712.

Valley athletes compete at BC games By Kate Irwin Pioneer Staff Golfers, baseball players and track and field stars from the valley were in Langley last month to take part in the BC Summer Games. The games, from July 22nd to 25th, were attended by 3,500 young sportsmen and women from around the province, supported by a team of 5,000 volunteers. Seven athletes from Invermere and Windermere competed in a range of track and field events, including sprints, high jump and javelin. “The events for the track athletes were pretty competitive and impressive,” said Lee Barker, the track team’s coach. “The athletes involved were from all over B.C. and train all year or have been training for the past couple of years just for their individual event.” Faced with stiff competition, the valley’s teens put in a strong performance, beating many of their personal bests. In the boys’ javelin, Invermere’s Stephen Hawes finished sixth out of 11 competitors, throwing a distance of 32 metres in the final. As well as javelin, Stephen took part in three additional events — the 1,200 metres, 800 metres and the boys’ relay. “I think we had the most fun out of all the teams,” Stephen said. “We knew we weren’t going to win everything – for me, taking part was definitely the most important thing.” Like Stephen, most of the valley’s competitors took part in more than one event — training over a period of five months. To qualify for the games, Kootenays team members had to place first or second in

their events at the East Kootenay Championships in Cranbrook in May. As well as track and field, one sportsman from Windermere played in the baseball section of the tournament. James Wilfley was part of three games for the

Kootenays squad. “It was a great experience,” James said. “I play right field and short stop and made some good catches. It was a lot of fun.” The boys were beaten in a close first game against the Thompson-Okanagan team, with a final score of seven to 13. For the second preliminary, the Kootenays secured a victory over Fraser Valley. After a loss in the third game the Kootenays team — who played together for the first time at the summer games — came sixth overall. “They were all pretty close games except that last one,” James added. “For the first time playing together as a team, I think we did a great job.” Another Windermere local took on an important role at the games. Dale Moore, head golf pro at Windermere Valley Golf Course, coached six boys and two girls from around the West Kootenay region. The eight golfers each played 36 holes at the Redwood Golf Course over two days. The team played well, finishing sixth out of eight competitors, as well as putting in a strong showing in the individual contest. “It is a tough course,” Dale explained. “It’s narrow and there is deep grass on either side — there were lost balls all over the place.” Dale — a two time nominee for B.C. teacher of the year — is hoping to have junior golfers from the East Kootenays competing in the next tournament in two years time. Between the team and individual events, all the athletes enjoyed some relaxation time. As well as holding two dances, organizers put on games and activities in the evenings to keep teams entertained.

The Green Zone: when I grow up By Harold Hazelaar Pioneer Columnist So, this year, I decided I would try to participate in a Men’s Night at one of the local courses. It turns out Wednesday was to be the best day for me, therefore Radium Resort was going to be the place. So far, my participation has not been what I expected. In the 17 or 18 weeks the guys have been playing, I have managed to make it out four or five times. Pretty dismal, to say the least. I blame the weather for most of the misses, with work coming in a distant second. On one occasion, I was driving to the course when it started to rain quite heavily, so I turned around and
went back to work where it was dry. How bad is that? Recently, on a day where everything worked out in my favour and I made it in time to play, I wound up in a group with Joe, Ian and Chuck Newhouse. Joe Newhouse is living in the tail end of his ninth decade and still plays golf multiple times each week. He didn’t start the game as a youngster, but he’s making up for lost time now. His shots are straight down the middle of the fairway most of the time and he gets upset with pars. He walks off many of the greens muttering about a poor putt! The competitive spirit between him and his boys is fun to watch. Even though they encourage each other after every shot, you know they are working hard to
beat each other on every hole. I guess this is, in part, what Men’s Night is all about: to be able to get out and golf with family or friends in a somewhat competitive situation and not feel inadequate about the whole thing makes me look forward to playing this game for years to come without worrying about hitting it the farthest or scoring the lowest. It’s all about personally feeling you’ve still got “game”. I know that Joe does! I now know what I want to be doing when I grow up! The Green Zone quote of the week is by golf course architect, Pete Dye: “The ardent golfer would play Mount Everest if somebody put a flagstick on top.”

FAITH
How do you define faith? By Pastor Trevor Hagan Lake Windermere Alliance Church The dictionary says that faith is confidence or trust in a person or thing or belief that is not based on proof. The Bible gives the best definition I have found so far in my life: “Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.” (Hebrews 11:1 NIV) There was a man who got lost in the desert. After wandering around for a long time his throat became very dry. About that time he saw a little shack in the distance. He made his way over to the shack and found a water pump with a small jug of water and a note. The note read: “Pour all the water into the top of the pump to prime it. If you do this you will get all the water you need.” Now, the man had a choice to make. If he trusted the note and poured the water in and it worked, he would have all the water he needed. If it didn’t work, he would still be thirsty and he might die. Or he could choose to drink the water in the jug and get immediate satisfaction, but it might not be
enough and he still might die. After thinking about it, the man decided to risk it. He poured the entire jug into the pump and began to work the handle. At first nothing happened and he got a little scared, but he kept going and water started coming out. So much water came out he drank all he wanted, took a shower and filled all the containers he could find. Because he was willing to give up momentary satisfaction, he got all the water he needed. Now the note also said: “After you have finished, please refill the jug for the next traveller.” The man refilled the jug and added to the note: “Please prime the pump – believe me, it works!” We have the same choice to make. I have a faith in someone who knows the unknown, someone who at the moment is unseen, but someone who is very much in control of this world and even my life: Jesus the Christ. I have been challenged in my life even as D. L. Moody was in his when he said: “I prayed for faith and thought that someday faith would come down and strike me like lightning. But faith did not seem to come. One day I read in the tenth chapter of Romans, ‘Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.’ I had up to this time closed my Bible and prayed for faith. I now opened my Bible and began to study, and faith has been growing ever since.” Prime the pump – read the Bible and see if your faith does not grow.
Collect your pull tabs By Sally MacDonald Pioneer Staff Invermere residents Gail and Henry Hoffmann have decided on a novel way to raise funds for a cause close to their hearts. The couple is collecting pull tabs from the top of pop cans in aid of Ronald McDonald House, which provides a home away from home for families while their children receive medical treatment at a Calgary hospital. What’s more, they are asking valley residents
to donate their pull tabs to the cause. The small pieces of aluminium are recycled, and the money raised is used to support the operation and supply costs of Ronald McDonald House. But the campaign needs lots of support: one metric ton of pull tabs will raise around $1,000, but that’s 3,990,000 pull tabs! The small metal pieces can betaken from pop and juice cans, fish and meat tins, soups, and cat and dog food tins. To donate your pull tabs, call Henry and Gail Hoffmann at 250-342-6752 or email hghoff@telus.net.
