Truck fire in Windermere
By Kate Irwin Pioneer Staff A pickup truck was ravaged by fire in Windermere on Monday night, which totally destroyed the vehicle inside and out, melting the tires and plastic fittings. The fire, which was reported to Windermere Fire Department at approximately 6 p.m., was noticed by the truck owner after he parked the vehicle on Poplar Street and went inside to make dinner.
The blaze, which began under the hood, quickly destroyed the truck. Seven firefighters attended the scene and took just a few minutes to put out the flames. Nobody was injured in the fire and the RV trailer beside the vehicle was undamaged. “Well we don’t know what caused it,” said Jim Miller, the Windermere and Fairmont Fire Chief. “It started under the hood so whether it was an electrical problem or overheating we aren’t yet sure.”

VIP GUEST — Prime Minister, Stephen Harper posed for pictures with staff at Fairmont Hot Springs Resort during his stay last week. Mr. Harper spent two nights at the resort with his family, enjoying some recreation time between appointments. PMO photo by Jason Ransom
Prime Minister visits Fairmont Resort
By Kate Irwin Pioneer Staff Prime Minister Stephen Harper visited the valley last week, staying at Fairmont Hot Springs resort for two nights while attending MP Jim Abbott’s retirement party in Fort Steele. Mr. Harper along with his wife, Laureen, and children, Benjamin and Rachel, spent last Tuesday and Wednesday night, August 10th and 11th, at the resort, also stopping in Cranbrook and Fort Steele during his stay. While in Fairmont, Mr. Harper went to the hot pools, played a round of golf at Riverside Golf Resort and met staff and fellow diners at Dapper’s Landing Family Restaurant. “It was a great experience to have Mr. Harper stay here and to meet with him,” said Dean Prentice, Chief
Operating Officer of Fairmont Hot Springs. “He had a really relaxed visit and came out here relatively unnoticed, which for him was probably quite a good thing.” The trip to the area was organized in 10 days, once Mr. Harper was confirmed to speak at Cranbrook’s Canadian Rockies International Airport. On Tuesday he went there to pledge $5.6 million in funding to the airport. Later that day, after a visit to the College of the Rockies campus, he made his way to Fort Steele for a barbecue held for retiring politician Jim Abbott. “It couldn’t have been a better evening,” said Mr. Abbott, who plans to step down as the Kootenay-Columbia MP after nearly 18 years. “The Prime Minister came and spoke and he was very, very warmly received...He loves this area as well, he is very tuned in to this part of the country.” After a busy Tuesday, the Prime Minister arrived
through a side door at the resort that night and spent the following day relaxing. During his stay he visited some friends at Columbia Lake and played a round of golf with them down at Riverside Golf Course. Later on Wednesday he went for dinner at Dapper’s Landing, sitting among fellow diners, chatting and taking pictures with them. Mr. Harper then finished off his evening with a trip to the hot pools. “He was very laid back during his visit,” Mr. Prentice said. “He went and shook hands with our staff at the resort and had his assistant gather up all the staff to get a photo...he seemed to have a very pleasant stay.” Mr. Harper left the valley on Thursday morning for Barrie, Ontario, where he coached a charity hockey game with hockey personality Don Cherry. His wife and children stayed at the resort town until the weekend, spending time hiking in the area.

Over the past weekend, Columbia Valley RCMP responded to 30 calls for service. • On August 13th, police responded to a report of mischief in the 1300 block of 7th Avenue in Invermere. A drunk man had broken a window by punching it for no apparent reason. Police located three of his friends, who denied knowing him. After speaking with police they finally admitted they did know the man, but said that he would not reveal where he was hiding. The business manager said he would not press charges if the man paid for the damage, estimating it would cost $400 to fix. Later that day the investigator contacted the business manager who said that the man had apologized and had paid the full $400 owed. • On August 14th, Columbia Valley RCMP responded to a complaint of assault with a bat in Canal Flats. The person who called police reported that two men had attacked the victim, believing he smashed their truck window and punched one of them in the face. The victim was injured on his face and nose as well as bruised on his back and arms. He was taken to hospital by his father. Police located and arrested the suspects for assault with a weapon. Both were released pending a court appearance on October 19th. • On August 14th, officers received a report of a bike found in Radium Hot Springs by a man out walking. It was covered up with branches and trees, suggesting that a thief was trying to hide it for a period of time. The bike is a metallic-burgundy Giant Rinkon mountain bike without a seat. It has been recovered and will be held until the owner is found. • On August 14th, RCMP members received a call from a man about grass and trees on fire by Stoddart Creek Welding, just north of Invermere. He said the flames were getting close to a cabin. Police attended as well as firefighters from Windermere, Radium, Invermere, and Fire Control B.C. The fire, of approximately 75 square meters, was put out after it burned
down a small, abandoned shack on the property. The man who reported the fire said he saw the property owner cutting down wood and burning it in a slash pile. He then went into his trailer next to the fire and then it got out of control. The owner admitted setting the slash on fire the previous night. After burning all night, he said, the middle burned and he was going to push the outside in, but forgot about it. Fire Control will issue a fine for burning slash during a fire ban. • On August 14th, at 4 p.m., police were called to a report of a smoldering campfire containing several propane bottles. Almost an hour later, the man who reported the fire led police to Poplar Flats, northwest of Wilmer. Officers found a large, smouldering fire pit, filled with debris including a metal bed, wheels and propane cans. Around the fire pit was tall dry grass. Police advised Fire Control BC who said they would monitor the fire. The investigation is ongoing. • On August 15th, at 5:31 a.m., staff of a business on Invermere’s Black Forest Trail reported three men laying on their floor who seemed to have been beaten up. When police arrived 20 minutes later, they found the men with head injuries. Paramedics were on scene when police arrived, but all refused to go to the hospital. Two said all that they remembered was sleeping in the back seat of the other’s 2006 GMC Sierra and waking up when it was in an accident. The duo said a fourth male called Josh was driving the truck. The owner said he met Josh in Cochrane and didn’t know anything other than his first name. Police did not smell liquor on any of the males. Patrols were made for Josh without success. Computer queries of an accident turned up nothing. Police contacted local tow companies, but none had towed a GMC Sierra. Kimberley’s RCMP detachment later reported locating the truck and linking the men with this vehicle. • On August 15th, Parks Canada’s Warden Service reported a possible assault with shots fired in McLeod Meadows in Kootenay National Park on August 1st. Invermere woman praises new treatment By Kelsey Verboom Pioneer Staff For the past few years, Jill Unger has hardly been able to walk. Now, thanks to a medical treatment that isn’t available in Canada, Jill can walk a little every day and do things she couldn’t have attempted before. Jill was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1999, and lost much of her active lifestyle within a few years. “I went from hiking and biking, sailing and golfing, to only being able to walk about four blocks,” Jill said. By 2008, Jill’s doctors deemed her case “chronic progressive,” and predicted her condition would steadily decline. Jill became more and more dependant on a motorized scooter and her husband, Richard, to move around. She had trouble balancing, using her left leg and hand, walking, and was hypersensitive to heat. This June, Jill happened to hear a CBC radio interview about a new
medical procedure that alleviates the symptoms of many Multiple Sclerosis sufferers. Dubbed the Liberation Treatment, the procedure is based on the findings of Italian vascular surgeon Dr. Paolo Zamboni, who developed a surgery based on the theory that blocked veins in the neck and chest prevent the proper drainage of blood from the brain, and cause Multiple Sclerosis. The treatment, which inflates and unblocks the identified problem veins, has quickly garnered worldwide media attention, although it still isn’t available in Canada due to a lack of thorough testing and consistent results. Jill decided to pursue the treatment for herself and follow what she described as “an unwavering intuition that told me, ‘this is it.’” Three weeks later, Jill was lying in a hospital bed at Hospital Angeles in Tijuana, Mexico. She underwent a $14,000, two-and-a-half hour procedure under local anesthetic, and
watched in amazement as a team of surgeons inflated her jugular vein, which was 55 per cent blocked, and her azygos vein, which was 75 per cent blocked. “It was so exciting,” she said. “They were absolutely focused on what they were doing.” Just six hours later, Jill stood from her bed on her own. “Normally I would have had someone to help me. I just stood up and took my husband’s hand like we were going to walk down the sidewalk.” Jill now practices walking around her living room every day, has improved balance, and can enjoy things she wasn’t able to do before, like gardening. “My recovery was automatic with certain things,” she said. “I do still have MS, and I still have symptoms I’m dealing with. It’s now my job to rest and not overdo stuff. “With the support of family and friends, it’s been the most exhilarating experience. It’s been wonderfully uplifting.”
WALK THE WALK - Jill Unger stands after walking around her living room –– something she wouldn’t have been able to do a few months ago.

By Brian Geis Pioneer Editor As history has shown, time and again, all systems, sciences, societies, philosophies, technologies and everything we have ever created — left unimpeded — undergoes fluid, constant and perpetual change. The world we know today was unimaginable only a few hundred years ago. Likewise, a few hundred years hence, the future will bring new knowledge and discoveries we cannot imagine today. Several short centuries ago, we believed the world was flat. The illusion that the universe revolved around the Earth eventually gave way to a heliocentric model, but not even the combined insight of Kepler, Gallileo and Hubble could have imagined our ability to observe their discoveries in digital images downloaded from a giant telescope orbiting in outer space. As we look back on earlier civilizations as primitive or unenlightened, so, too, will future generations look back on us. Societies, governments and economies vastly different from the ones we know could emerge from a critical mass of new understanding. Wars have been waged in resistance to sweeping change, an immutable fact of natural law. We must always be open to new information, new insight and new ideas, even when they threaten longheld beliefs, traditional ways of thinking, our current economic and power structures, even our religiouslyheld convictions. To be proven wrong is almost always considered a failure. Instead, it should be celebrated, for it has ushered in every major advancement humankind has ever known. We are, once again, awakened to new possibilities and our eyes are opened as if for the first time.

Welcome back to school
Dear Editor:
On behalf of the board of education and administration of School District No. 6, we would like to welcome everyone to this new school year. We hope you have had a restful and rejuvenating summer and that you look forward as we do to the many successes the coming year will bring. We welcome our returning students, families and staff and also want to welcome all students, families and staff who are new to our schools this year. We are very proud of School District 6 and we know that you will also enjoy and appreciate being part of our Rocky Mountain learning community. We are also pleased to congratulate and welcome staff who are new to district positions: Cheryl Dyer, Assistant Superintendent; Joanne Espinel, District Resource Centre/Technology Support Teacher; Lisa Tenta, Principal of Eileen Madson Primary School; Viveka Johnson, Principal, and Crystal MacLeod, Vice Principal of McKim Middle School. The trustees and staff have a strong, professional commitment to the success of each student. At the “celebrations of student success” events last spring, we saw many examples of this commitment being demonstrated and it truly came alive in the stories that were shared by staff, parents and students. We commend our staff for their leadership, parents for their guidance and support, and most of all our students for continuing to focus on their goals despite the challenges that sometimes stand in the way. You inspire all of us to be our very best.
We continue to support the district’s Directions 2013 which were developed with input from staff, students, parents and the community. The focus areas and directions are as follows: • Build and maintain a culture of shared values and understanding consistent with our Vision, Mission and Guiding Principles. • Be an innovative and responsive educational leader embraced by students and parents. • Be the employer of choice. • Practice environmental stewardship. • Expand initiatives to support students, staff and our partners to maintain healthy life-styles. • Work with community partners to develop mutually beneficial educational opportunities. Please review the June 2010 update which can be found on the district website www.sd6.bc.ca by searching in the ‘Documents’ section under ‘Governance’. Consider how you can work with your school or the district to enhance learning opportunities. Our main focus continues to be the success of every student, and this depends on the effective partnership between schools, families and the community. We look forward to continuing to build on the strong collaborative foundation for this work that already exists. Best wishes to everyone for the 201011 school year! On behalf of the trustees and administration, Roberta Hall, Board Chair Paul Carriere, Superintendent

The report stated park staff were approached by a man on August 3rd who told them that on Sunday night two couples in sites H2 and H4 had been arguing heavily at around midnight. The man said he, “heard him punch the woman in the face,” and said the campers left on foot but came back later. He said he heard the male camper shoot what he believed was a .44-caliber gun in the air or ground. Park wardens had conducted patrols through the campsite after noon on August 2nd but found nothing. They spoke to two campers who heard what sounded like an aerosol can exploding in a fire. No contact information was obtained by park staff for any of the campers. The man said they refused to quiet down after several requests from other campers. Police attended and spoke with the Albertan youths and had the group put out the fire and shut the party down for the night. Police advised them the quiet time posted for the campground was 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. The following day police were again requested to attend this campsite to help the camp facilitator with the eviction of the group. They were evicted without further incident and the original complainant was pleased with police assistance.

Invermere cat shelter close to capacity By Kate Irwin Pioneer Staff Summer is a busy season for animal shelters, with many rescue centres across the region full to bursting with unwanted pets. For the Invermere Companion Animal Network (ICAN) the warmer weather has brought with it an influx of cats and kittens, all needing loving homes. The shelter is currently running close to capacity, with 14 adult cats and 22 kittens all under the watchful eye of staff and foster carers. “This time of year is typically called kitten season,” said Lana Banham, ICAN Co-Founder and President. “People let their cats out in spring, they get pregnant and this is what happens. People bring them in here when they get fed up or can’t cope.” At the ICAN centre, based out of a private residence in Invermere, adult cats have the run of a large outdoor enclosure, set up with numerous cat kennels. Younger cats can cause mischief in the indoor kitten room until they are old enough to be fully inoculated against diseases and integrate with other cats. Some of the shelter’s residents have been there for a matter of days whereas other long-term guests have
been staying with ICAN for up to two years. “A lot of people just get sick of their cats,” Lana said. “Lots are abandoned on roadsides, it’s a horrible thing. They are often skin and bone and are suffering from kidney failure from starvation and lack of water.” As well as wanting new homes for their feline guests, ICAN desperately needs volunteers to help with care, socializing kittens and cats, and grooming. Requiring a commitment of just two hours a week, volunteers can get involved with any aspect of cat care, from fostering animals until homes are found, to shopping for food and cat litter. The centre is also asking for assistance from local carpenters to help maintain their enclosures. “We’re dying for volunteers right now,” Lana explained. “Every year since we started we have been getting busier and busier, we often have long waiting lists just to get cats into the shelter.” Established in 2007 by Lana and business partner Cindy Hopper, ICAN started with six unwanted cats. The rescue centre is now looking to expand and build a dedicated shelter once an acre of land for lease or purchase can be found. For more information or to volunteer, call ICAN at 250-342-5859, or visit www.icanhelpapet.com.

Movie Review: The Last Song Reviewed by Katie Wallace The Last Song is a romantic, coming of age drama about estrangement, unfolding love, and reconciliation, starring Miley Cyrus, Greg Kinnear, and Liam Hemsworth. Cyrus plays Ronnie Miller a rebellious teen who is forced to live with her father, Steve Miller (played by Greg Kinnear), for the summer on Tybee Island, just off the Georgia coast. Tensions are high as the pair have not spoken in three years, since he and her mother divorced. There she meets the handsome (and mostly shirtless) Will Blakelee (Liam Hemsworth) who first comes across as an insensitive local jock. Ronnie gains a new respect for Will when he helps her protect endangered
Loggerhead Sea Turtles from a pesky raccoon and becomes attracted to him, realizing that this jock has a softer side. As Ronnie and Will’s love grows, so too does her relationship with her estranged father. This is a fairly good story of first love, friendships, second chances, and salvation. There is a definite emphasis on family and the importance of being good to one another. While it is quite watchable, The Last Song does tend to stray a little into teen movie clichés. Miley Cyrus — primarily known as an actor for her role in Disney’s Hannah Montana — is surprisingly good in her first serious movie role. Greg Kinnear is great as Ronnie’s dad and is the sort of personable actor who seems tailor made for this kind of part.
Liam Hemsworth is a fine complement to Cyrus’ Ronnie Miller. The Georgia settings provide a strong backdrop for the story and Tybee Island is particularly striking with its windswept dunes and beautiful vistas. The Last Song is directed by Julie Ann Robinson, her first feature film, and is adapted to screenplay by Jeff Van Wie with the help of author Nicholas Sparks. This is the sixth of his novels to be adapted to film, after the successes of Message in a Bottle, A Walk to Remember, The Notebook, Nights in Rodanthe, and Dear John.

Treva Burton to be honoured Liberate Lynda Submitted by Jami Scheffer Pynelogs Cultural Centre Columbia Valley Arts Council and Pynelogs Cultural Centre will celebrate the life of artist Treva Burton by hosting a retrospective of Treva’s work. The twoweek show will be part of the regular showcase of art from August 24th to September 4th, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., each day. This exhibition will Treva Burton be accompanied by some of her art pieces, photos, newspaper articles and memorabilia. Members of Treva’s family will be in Invermere to attend a celebration of Treva’s life on Wednesday evening, September 1st from 7 - 9 p.m. Treva’s interest in art and people was at the forefront of both her work and teaching. For many of her
92 years she nurtured and influenced many artists both locally and in many locales in Canada. Treva studied at the Banff Centre under A.Y. Jackson, one of her favorite painters. Her love of art and learning found her enrolled in many workshops throughout her life, including Salt Spring Island and Orcas Island in Washington State. She loved to travel and participated in painting tours in China, Greece, France, Canada and the United States. Many people knew her for her art and will remember the many years she held the Treva Burton Art Show at Strand’s Restaurant in Invermere. Many others knew her as a teacher, and an extra-ordinary and true friend. She was an explorer, a hiker, a photographer, an accomplished pianist and she loved to write. Treva was also a qualified Ski Instructor and Swimming Instructor. Her life was rich with the wonders of nature. Not a moment was wasted. Treva’s family and friends will attend the celebration of Treva’s life and art at Pynelogs Cultural Centre on Wednesday, September 1, from 7 - 9 p.m. The art show and retrospective runs from August 24th to September 4th, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day in the gallery at Pynelogs Cultural Centre.
By Pioneer Staff Friends and family of well-known community member, Lynda Kirkpatrick, are on a fund raising quest to send Lynda to Mexico for a medical procedure known as the Liberation Treatment (See page 5 for more on the procedure). Lynda, who is from Invermere, suffers from Multiple Sclerosis, and the summer heat has sped up the progression of her condition to the point where she is on the verge of losing her mobility entirely. The treatment, which improves the symptoms of many Multiple Sclerosis patients, isn’t available in Canada, so Lynda’s closest supporters are rallying in hopes of raising $25,000 to pay for the international procedure. A fund-raising event called Liberating Lynda will be held on Thursday, September 9th from 7 - 9 p.m. at the Best Western Invermere Inn, with food, drinks, and a silent auction. For more information, call 250-342-6752 or 250-342-3624.

New novice kayak tour in Fairmont By Kate Irwin Pioneer Staff A new kayak tour in Fairmont Hot Springs is giving novice paddlers the chance to test their skills on slow-flowing water. This is the first summer that the introduction to moving water tours are being brought to the stretch of the Columbia River beside Fairmont. The tours — held in Invermere for the last two summers — are designed to be a safe, relaxing way to test skills on an easy stretch of water. “Basically it’s a fun, family friendly introduction to paddling on moving water,” said Jocelyn MacGregor, of BC Rockies Adventures, who are offering the program. “A lot of people take a boat out and fall in. Like anything, if you take lessons you can learn how to do it properly and safely.” The trips leave from Spruce Grove campsite, just south of Fairmont, and paddlers are picked up by mini bus about three and a half kilometres downstream. Each outing begins with half an hour of introductory tuition on calm water, teaching participants how to get moving, steer the kayak and stay safe on the river. The trip is suitable for a range of ages and any
ability level, from absolute beginner to experienced paddlers. “The really neat part about it is anyone can do it,” Jocelyn explained. “We have taken anyone from four year-olds to the elderly...If people don’t want to continue after the introduction then they can still back out before we head off.” After testing their skills on calm water, novice kayakers head onto the river, led by Jocelyn, with her partner Andi Dzilums bringing up the rear. The easy river has a number of small rapids, allowing beginners to get comfortable on flowing water under the watchful eye of two experienced guides. Along the way visitors can see a range of wildlife, including Lewis’s woodpeckers, blue herons and bald eagles. “We’ve seen a deer with two babies on our way down,” Jocelyn said. “Woodpeckers, baby eagles, and lots of kingfishers. It’s fun to see the Eastern Kingbird take on anything that comes into its territory.” The introduction to moving water tours are run by BC Rockies Adventures from Tuesday to Saturday from 1 to 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 to 9 p.m, costing $55 per person. For more information visit, www.fairmonthotsprings.com and click activities, or call, 250-345-6049.

I’m sure if you ask Bob Coy he would say, it’s about time that goof wrote about our course. “He comes out here to play and never mentions us in his column!” Well, Bob is correct. For some unknown reason I have neglected to write anything about Coy’s Golf Course in six years of writing. So, today’s column is all about how to maintain your golf cart. Kidding! Coy’s is an unusual, nine-hole track located just south of Fairmont. It doesn’t have the normal hazards or obstacles that you find yourself trying to avoid on most courses, but it does have a turtle! The holes are not long nor do they appear to be overly difficult, but shooting par is almost an impossible task. The greens are definitely slow and take a while to get used to. A couple of holes have the narrowest of fairways and, as is the case on most golf courses, being able to hit a straight ball is critical. I happened to play there recently for their Men’s night. It is an informal setup that even allows groups of five, six or seven golfers to play together. These large groups go last and don’t slow up play at all. I played in a six-some and it could be a great way to make extra cash if your game is superior to everyone in your group. On this particular day, I was made to promise I

wouldn’t mention any names if I chose to write about my experience. So, I will hold to my promise with the exception of telling you about Wes Walstrom and his need to help himself have the best score of the night. Not being a regular at Coy’s, I was unsure of the break and pace of the greens, so Mr. Walstrom took it upon himself to offer assistance in determining the “break of my putts”. I thought I was mis-hitting my putts until we were on a green with almost identical putts. Since I was further away, Wes suggested I needed to allow for five or six inches of right-to-left break. Watching my putt miss the hole by more than a foot and then watching Wes play a putt with left-toright break re-confirmed a suspicion I have had for many years: Wes Walstrom will do anything to beat you AND give you his big cheesy grin at the same time. I recommend everyone to play Coy’s for an entertaining, low pressure round of golf. The food and the service in the clubhouse is fabulous to stay for a bite to eat after your game. I also recommend that you don’t let Wes play in your group! The Green Zone Quote of the Week is by Chi Chi Rodriguez: “I’ve heard people say that putting is 50 percent technique and 50 percent mental. I really believe it is 50 percent technique and 90 percent positive thinking. See, but that adds up to 140 percent, which is why nobody is 100 percent sure how to putt.”

New gun club contest Submitted by Vic Thomas Lake Windermere District Rod and Gun Club A brand new clay shooting competition is coming next weekend to the Rauch Homestead Ranch, west of Radium Hot Springs. Bugaboo Blast,a sporting clays contest hosted by the Lake Windermere District Rod and Gun club, will be held on August 28th and 29th. The two days of competition will feature 220 registered and 120 nonregistered targets. This relatively new sport was started in the U.K. in the late 1980s, to give participants shooting conditions closely resembling field hunting. Like trap and skeet shooting, the objective is to hit a moving clay target using a shotgun. Unlike trap and skeet — which has stringent course and target specifications — sporting clays is based on a free-format, walk around course. Participants go through 10 to 20
shooting stations in groups of four or five. Each station has a different layout and target presentation, from high crossing targets to ones bouncing along the ground. It is often referred to as golf with a shotgun. As in golf, no two courses are the same and on a course each shooting station is different. The variety and social aspect are a key appeal of the sport. At Bugaboo Blast there will be seven skill levels — known as classes — as well as groups based on age and gender, including ladies, junior and veteran. The event will feature around $6,000 in prizes, including podium finish prizes for each class and speciality prizes including a west coast fishing trip and a guided pheasant hunt. With the only sporting clays facility in the East Kootenays, the Rod and Gun Club’s objective is to build this into an essential event for sporting clays enthusiasts in Western Canada. See www.lwdrodgun.org for more information or call 250-341-3254.

Big season for Bighorns By Kate Irwin Pioneer Staff The football season is almost here and it will be a big one for the Columbia Valley Bighorns football team, who will compete for the first time in the B.C. high school leagues. It is a major step for coach and team founder Bruce Marlow, who has been pushing for the Bighorns to have the chance to compete in higher-level games and go to the provincial football championships. “We have been accepted into the Okanagan football league for the first time,” Mr. Marlow said. “It is a very difficult league to get into and I have been applying for years. I think our excellent record at the Kootenay Ball helped us to get in.” The Bighorns, who have been the Kootenay Bowl champions for the last three years, will now face teams from high schools across the province. Their preparation begins tonight, Friday August 20th, as the team’s fall training program gets underway. But the team is still hoping to sign up a few more players by September 1st, when games start. “We are trying to fill up to 30 positions right now,” Mr. Marlow explained. “We have 21 or 22 kids signed up and it would be good to get eight or nine more on board.” With team practices every weekend Mr. Marlow admits the commitment is large, but with the right mental attitude and dedication come great rewards. In the past players have had the opportunity to go to California and Vancouver to watch NFL and CFL games, even getting to step onto the field while the teams warmed up. For this season players will have the chance to travel around the province, to Calgary and further afield for games and team outings. “A lot of what I ask for is the right attitude,” Mr. Marlow said, explaining the team selection process. “We have a real mix of people playing together who you probably wouldn’t see in any other sport, but if a kid shows up he is always welcome, always feels part of something — there is such camaraderie.” Practices for the Bighorns start tonight, August 20th, at 5 p.m. at the Bighorns Field and continue for the next two weekends. The team is open to boys of all shapes and sizes and all equipment is provided. For more information, or to sign up for the team call Bruce Marlow on 403-312-4969, or Diana Bronkhorst at 250-342-8767.

Old Timers take to the ice for annual tournament
By Kelsey Verboom Pioneer Staff The sounds of skate blades scraping the ice and pucks slapping against the boards will soon ring from the newly renovated Eddie Mountain Memorial Arena during the 27th annual Old Timers’ Hockey Tournament. The yearly event, which will be held September 3rd – 5th, is a fund raiser for minor sports, and all proceeds are donated to minor hockey, football, soccer, gymnastics, The Columbia Valley Rockies, and other local teams. “Last year, a total of around $3,000 was donated to local sports,” said one of the event’s organizers, Ross Bidinger.
This year’s tournament will host a total of 17 teams, at least four of which are local. Three of the 17 teams are ladies’ teams, who will be able to participate for the first time this year in their own division. All of the players in the tournament are 35 years or older, and are further divided into separate age divisions based on the degree of their ‘old-timer’ status. Everyone is invited to watch the event and cheer on the players. This year, the public is also welcome to attend the tournament’s dinner and dance on Saturday, September 4th at 6:00 p.m. at the Invermere curling rink. There will be a bar, an evening meal, and live music to dance to. Tickets are available at Grant’s Foods, 7th Avenue, Invermere, for $25.

s obituary s George Guimont 1932 - 2010 It is with great sadness that the family of George Guimont announce his sudden passing on Friday, August 13, 2010 at the age of 78 in Fairmont Hot Springs, British Columbia. George was a loving husband, father and strong advocate for wildlife who lived life to the fullest. He was born on May 19, 1932 in Grand Falls, New Brunswick. George’s first passion was baseball. He was drafted by the Detroit Tigers as a pitcher.
July 28, 1920 – August 10, 2010
His love of adventure and the mountains brought him west , where he and Shirley were married in 1955.
Sylvia Louise Atwood passed away peacefully with family at her side on August 10, 2010 in Invermere, BC.
While raising 4 children and working in the lumber industry, they purchased a lot on Columbia Lake in 1967. They settled in Kimberley and operated Bavarian News for 25 years.
Sylvia was born July 28, 1920 in Hazlet Saskatchewan to Rudolph and Violet Stock, sister to Kay and Alfred. Her life went on to include 4 years in the Air Force where she was an ambulance attendant and a cook. Sylvia married Logan Atwood and moved to Radium Hot Springs where she ran the first bed and breakfast in the valley at the Upper Ranch. Sylvia worked for many years at Jessie’s Restaurant where she became famous for her fantastic cinnamon buns. She was a 48 year member of the Royal Canadian Legion and very active with the Radium Seniors, she was well known and loved, her infectious laugh will be missed by many.
In 1998 they retired to that special “lot” we call the cabin. George spent many hours in the great outdoors and enjoyed sharing his treasured stories and jokes with friends and family. One of George’s greatest joys was spending time in the mountains with his son Rod.
The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to Columbia House for all their help and care. To everyone who attended the celebration of her life at the Edgewater Hall and the luncheon at the Royal Canadian Legion where many funny and meaningful stories were told. Thank you also to George MacLean for taking Sylvia on her last ride with his horse and wagon to her final resting place. Preceded in death by her husband Logan Atwood. Sylvia is survived by her three sons, Rene (Val), Randy (Debbie), Lance (Michelle), sister Kay, brother Alfred, and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. CHEERS & JEERS Jeers to the arrogant Alberta woman parking in AG Foods Handicap parking without a pass. When asked, she uses her 80-yearold mother, who remained in the car, as an excuse. Arrogant Albertans like you wreck it for the rest of us. Cheers to the mother who must have told her off, because Ms. Arrogant Alberta didn’t park in the Sobey’s Handicap parking thereafter. Keep up the good work. Cheers to Jill Logan, the Village of Radium Hot Springs, the Adventure Radium leaders, and Kootenay River Runners for safely getting our children off the Columbia River during last Thursday’s storm. It’s an experience they soon won’t forget! Cheers to the gardeners who do an exceptional job of making the main street beautiful! We make a point of going down the main street on our way home just to enjoy the beauty. Thanks so much, Flo, Val and Donna. Cheers to the Invermere Summit Youth Center for picking up the broken glass in the alley beside The Bargain Shop. Job well done! Thank you. Cheers to Rich and Michelle from Rowan Road in Windermere for towing our boat and all aboard when we got stranded at the end of Lake Windermere. You saved the day! Janice and Lou.

This will prevent access to Welsh Lakes, Thunderwater Lake and Catamount Glacier for the duration of the bridge work. There will also be no parking for vehicles on these sections of both roads to allow access for heavy duty machinery. In total four bridges will be removed and replaced on these roads. Anyone requiring more information on the road closures and bridge work should contact the engineering section of the Rocky Mountain Forest District on 250-426-1700.

FAITH
You are, I am, we are, God’s greatest work By Pastor Wayne Frater Radium Christian Fellowship Ephesians 2:10 from the New Living Translation tells us, “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago.” Last Sunday we took some time and looked at Ephesians chapter 1. The tenth verse, “We are God’s masterpiece,” came alive. What is a masterpiece? “Anything done or made with wonderful skill; a perfect piece of art or workmanship. A persons, (or in our case, God’s) greatest work.” You are, I am, we are, God’s greatest work, God waited until He had created the heavens and the earth, and all the plants and animals, then on the sixth day, in Genesis chapter 1, verses 26-30, He creates His masterpiece, and in verse 31, “God looked over all He had made, and He saw that it was very good.” Not only did He create a masterpiece, He created that masterpiece for a purpose, “so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago.” He created you and I to do good things for Him. He has a plan, and you and I are part of that plan. The catch is, we can’t do these good things on our own. We need Jesus to fulfill His plan for us. The first ten verses of Ephesians 1 explains: “Once you were dead because of your disobedience and your many sins. You used to live in sin, just like the rest of the world, obeying the devil — the commander of the powers in the unseen world. He is the spirit at work in the hearts of those who refuse to obey God. All of us used to live that way, follow-
ing the passionate desires and inclinations of our sinful nature. By our very nature we were subject to God’s anger, just like everyone else. But God is so rich in mercy, and He loved us so much, that even though we were dead because of our sins, He gave us life when He raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!) For He raised us from the dead along with Christ and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ Jesus. So God can point to us in all future ages as examples of the incredible wealth of His grace and kindness toward us, as shown in all He has done for us who are united with Christ Jesus. God saved you by His grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago.” Therefore, do not ever think you are unimportant, insignificant, or that you do not matter. To do so is a denial of the very Gospel itself, for you are his masterpiece, created in Christ to do good things. Therefore no other human being –– including you yourself –– is competent to stand in judgment of your worth. You may be a rude and shapeless lump of clay now, but if you are a Christian you are God’s masterpiece, being shaped into a thing of beauty and wonder even as you read this. You are God’s Masterpiece; give Him a chance to prove it. If you know Christ, get before God and find out what His plan is for you. What are the goods things He wants you to do? If you don’t know Jesus, give Him a chance in your life, it is so simple. Romans 10:9 says, “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”
