By Brian Geis Pioneer Staff Lake Windermere Project Manager Heather Lechied is asking for help to remove a full, sealed barrel from shallow waters at the north end of Lake Windermere. The barrel was discovered by volunteers Jim Galloway and John Ashby during the 15th Annual Lake Windermere Shoreline Clean-up.
“We’ll have to be careful,” she said, “not knowing what is in there.” Ms. Lechied said anyone willing to help can call her at Wildsight’s Lake Windermere Project office, 250-341-6898. This year, the lakeshore — including Chabot, Kinsmen, and Kpokl Beaches — was cleaner than usual this year, except for cigarette butts that continue to be a problem.

First, the bad news: Rockies 1, Rockets 5. The boys thought this was going to be an easy two points and played as such. Penalties cost us and this night our guys were not skating or hungry for the puck. The boys have a game on Tuesday and three games on the weekend to make a statement. Last year, I would have walked away happy as I worked and had ties with both clubs, but this year I’m all Rockies. Except, if they don’t make the playoffs, then of course I’m all Rockets. Before I move on to real crime, I have about 18 empty squares left in the Hockey Pool. See me at the arena and I will explain it. • On September 16, members of the RCMP’s Columbia Valley detachment attended the arena in regards to a report of a break-and-enter. The culprit vandalized the candy machines and was able to break open one to get some loose change. The investigation is continuing. • On September 17, police contended with drivers arriving for the car show in Radium. A number of the muscle cars decided to perform burnouts. In this case, on Highway 93, in the 5000 block, a Ford Mustang lost control, causing damage to property of one of the motel owners. To the driver’s credit, he did not flee and paid for the damage. Police were not called to the scene at the time. • On September 17, at almost 10:30 p.m., the Columbia Valley detachment located the subject of an earlier complaint involving a white, Chevy Blazer bearing Saskatchewan plates driving in an erratic manner. The vehicle was observed by police to be driving poorly. When the vehicle was stopped at Seventh Avenue and Ninth streets, the 33-year-old Regina driver displayed signs of intoxication and was charged with impaired driving and driving while prohibited. • On September 17, at 9:45 p.m., the detachment received a complaint of break-and-enter in the 4000 block of Radium Boulevard. Two laptop computers were stolen along with a small amount of money. Anyone with information is requested to contact the detachment.
• On September 19, police received a report of a male burning down a wooden stage structure on the Shuswap Reserve. Police were provided a name of a suspect and are investigating. Radium car show Over the weekend, police officers, including one from Golden Traffic Services, laid a number of charges against drivers attempting to impress the crowds with a show on public streets by smoking their tires. Because changes to the Motor Vehicle Act didn’t go into effect until Monday, September 20th, these cars avoided being impounded. Next year, drivers who choose to put on a show risk having their vehicles impounded for seven days. The event was successful and no major incidents were dealt with other than the vehicle that lost control and caused property damage on the Friday. Unbelievable This is not police related nor has anything, even remotely, to do with the lighter side of police work, but it certainly is a crime about to happen. For some strange and unknown reason, the Chamber of Commerce has requested I consider serving as emcee for their golf tournament on September 28. Regular readers should know that I will take any shot I can get at golfers and the game of golf. My immediate thought was, the Chamber has lost it or they like to live on the edge. When Sue Smith made me the offer, I was about to throw her out of the office when a lightbulb went off in my head. Once they hand over the microphone, I can say whatever I want, really tell them what I think of golf and no one can stop me. “Love to do it,” I grinned. It’s a fundraiser and they are going to have some great stuff to auction and, no doubt, a great dinner. Even if, like me, you don’t golf, you will want to be there for the showdown of the year. It’s a high-noon, shotgun start at Copper Point. (See, I knew it! They are violent people.) See Sue at the Chamber office to get on the golf thing list. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience, as I doubt it I will ever be invited back.

Lynda Kirkpatrick transformed by treatment in Tijuana By Brian Geis Pioneer Staff Adding to the preponderance of anecdotal evidence Canadian leaders are finding difficult to ignore, Lynda Kirkpatrick said she is amazed by the effects of the controversial Liberation Treatment she received in Tijuana, Mexico, this week to relieve the symptoms of her multiple sclerosis. “Amazing,” she said. “It’s incredible. Do you wear glasses? Do you know what bifocals are? I had them, but I don’t need them now.” Ms. Kirkpatrick of Invermere returned late Tuesday night from the whirlwind trip made possible by the generous donations of friends and neighbours. A group calling itself Liberating Lynda raised $30,000 to pay for the trip and procedure which has not been approved in Canada. Similar to angioplasty, the operation clears blockages in major arteries and veins to increase blood flow to the brain. Lynda’s husband Bill Kirkpatrick updated Lynda’s supporters by e-mail before leaving Mexico.
The first step, he said, was a venography, where they insert dye into the the neck veins to see, first hand, if there were any narrowings or blockages. They found two blockages in the left jugular vein and proceeded to the next step. A catheter with a balloon on the end was inserted into her right anterior proximal thigh and run up to the left jugular. When in place, he said, the balloon is inflated to clear the blockages. By the time the couple returned to their lodging, Lynda said her hands and feet were toasty warm, a feeling she hadn’t experience in a decade. Since then, she said, her balance has improved and her family said her speech has improved. Ms. Kirkpatrick said she is frustrated and angry and blames politicians that so much was required for her to receive the operation. “There are so many Canadians at this location,” she said. “Frankly, I’m mystified — and somewhat angry — the procedure has not been approved in Canada.” “I’m very, very, very lucky,” she said, “to have so many people behind me.”

Burned out on burnouts? By Brian Geis Pioneer Editor
The Pioneer’s Cheers and Jeers section of the Classified Advertising has never been more popular. This year, more than ever, readers are using the feature to editorialize on incidents and issues without getting personal. This week at The Pioneer, we marveled at the unprecedented occurrence of two readers standing at the front counter to submit opposing sentiments on the same issue at the same time. What are the odds? Considering the issue, it was probably not that unlikely. Each year at this time. we expect some reaction to the RCMP’s tactics in response to the unrestrained driving of some attendees of the annual car show in Radium. This year was the 21st installment of the off-season classic and, by all accounts, poorly attended due to a stubborn gloom hanging over the valley and an intermittent rain that nagged at us all weekend. At issue for police are the publicly polarizing demonstrations of sheer horsepower that result in squeals of delight and clouds of smoke — followed by either a cringe and sigh of relief or whoops and hollers from roadside bystanders — during the unsanctioned parade on public streets that follows the event. This year, for the first time this reporter can remember, the RCMP’s fears were realized when one such demonstration resulted in property damage. I can hear them saying, “Thank goodness it wasn’t a child.” Supporters say it’s good for business at a time we need it and critics say its too dangerous for public streets and sets a bad example for young and someday drivers. The police say no more and are threatening to impound the hot rods. Moving the car show to the airport runway is the best suggestion I’ve heard so far.
Historical Lens A day at the hot pools, circa 1916 In this image from the Gordon Lake collection, Mr. and Mrs Percy Lake and their three children (on bench) pose with seven swimmers and three men in ties at the hot pools in Radium. Town centerpiece is not hazardous Dear Editor: I don’t have a copy of the Pioneer in front of me, but I recall the District of Invermere intends to remove the elaeagnus augustifolia (Russian olive) tree from Cenotaph Park because it is unsafe. Please, correct me if I am wrong, but I have looked at the severed lower limb and found no rot or decay. The tree appears healthy and vibrant. The distribution of lateral feeder roots at ground level looks fairly even and well distributed. High above the lower two, 12-inch diameter, lateral limbs, the canopy is well distributed for
weight and wind-loading. With the even distribution of lateral roots and the even distribution of a healthy canopy, and not finding any decay on the severed limb, I find it difficult to deem this tree “hazardous.” If the District of Invermere wants to remove the tree, just say so. But don’t deem it hazardous. If the lower two limbs are removed, you still have a very stately tree that should remain intact as part of the heritage of this town. Thank you all for liberating Lynda Dear Editor: Once again, this valley community has come together to help one of its own. We want to thank everyone who was involved in any way. A special appreciation goes to the Best Western Invermere Inn who not only donated the venue for our fundraising event, but also generously discounted the food costs, and donated the bar receipts to this worthy cause. Thanks, also, go to the hotel staff. Without their enormous assistance, the event would not have been as enjoyable. To the Dry Gulch Ramblers, who provided the night’s entertainment, and Mr. Bill Cropper, the emcee and autioneer, who both gave freely of their time and talents, we send our thanks. Thanks go to Palliser Printing for the tickets and posters; to the Pioneer, the Valley Peak, and the Valley Echo for their ongoing publicity regarding the fundraising and our evening at the Invermere Inn. Thanks Interior World and Max-
Well Realty for making Liberating Lynda the recipient of the funds from their annual Customer Appreciation Day Hot Dog Sale. We were presented a cheque in the amount of $3000.00. To all the artisans, business owners, and “ordinary folk” who contributed their art, products, and treasures to the silent and live auctions that made the event such an overwhelming success. To Kootenay Savings, we say thanks, for setting up an account in the name of “Liberating Lynda” that allowed anyone to make deposits. Most of all, to the people of this valley who, once again, opened their hearts and their wallets and helped us raise more than $29,000 to send Lynda to Mexico, we offer our humble and heartfelt appreciation. Lynda is currently in Mexico where she is waiting for the procedure that hopefully will put the quality back in her life and “Liberate” her. Thank you.

There’s a new rock in the house for the Invermere Curling Club. Curling buff Jim Jenkinson has officially stepped into the role of manager and icemaker, and is busy preparing the sheets for league play in early October. Jim Jenkinson Mr. Jenkinson recently attended Ice Technician training in Alberta, and put his new-found knowledge to the test last week when preparation of the club’s ice began. “That’s the part I’m really interested in — the science behind icemaking,” he said. Mr. Jenkinson began curling in the mid-70s, and participated in the fun league last season with his wife, Nancy. “I enrolled in a curling clinic for novices at the urging of my golf buddies,” he said. “Ironically, I quickly became a better curler than a golfer.” Mr. Jenkinson moved to Invermere from Ontario in 1998 with Nancy and their children, Barbara and Jamie, who also curl. A former teacher, he is currently serving in the final year of his second term as a trustee on the Rocky Mountain Board of Education, and is the School District #6 representative on the British Columbia School Trustees Association Provincial Council. Mr. Jenkinson also devotes his time as president of the Columbia Valley Swim Club and vice-president of the Windermere Men’s Golf Club.

Legion recognizes volunteer of the year By Kate Irwin Pioneer Staff A local volunteer who has worked tirelessly to fundraise for Invermere’s Royal Canadian Legion branch has been recognized in their Volunteer of the Year Awards for 2009. Pat Cope, the Executive Director of the Family Resource Centre, was honoured for the extensive voluntary work she did for the Invermere Legion branch during 2009. She and other volunteers worked to raise in excess of $10,000 for the branch in the last 12 months. “Comrade Pat Cope has given selflessly of her time and energy in volunteering in excess of some 300 hours of work this past year,” said Rick Jarrett, President of the Windermere District Branch 71. “Always cheerful and helpful, her leadership in volunteerism is an example to us all ... If an activity was happening in the Branch, Pat was involved in some way, often from planning through execution.” Ms. Cope was awarded lifetime membership a few years ago for her services to the Legion. She was surprised with the Volunteer of the Year award by Mr. Jarrett and Legion members earlier this month, not
even knowing that she had been nominated. Her efforts for the branch included extensive work towards a number of projects, from baking for the Legion’s Saturday morning marketplace, to working for the Ways and Means Committee. “I was shocked when I was presented the award, I just didn’t have any words,” Ms. Cope explained. “I didn’t have any idea. I was really humbled, the Legion is very important to me and it’s a big part of what I do. My family has been involved with them for years, it’s in my blood.” As well as being part of numerous Legion committees, Ms. Cope has been involved with the branch’s Friday dinners, meat draws, pie sales and Canada Day festivities. A former branch president, Ms. Cope and her family are proud to have been involved with the volunteering team at Invermere’s Legion for many years. “I would like to say thank you to whoever nominated me; I’m not even sure who it was,” Ms. Cope added. “Thank you also to the team of people who have been just awesome to work with. “It really is not about me: it’s about all the people behind the scenes working together for a common cause.”
COMMUNITY LEADER — The Legion’s Pat Cope was named their Volunteer of the Year earlier this month thanks to her tireless volunteering efforts at the Invermere branch.

Movie Review: Robin Hood John takes over the throne after the sudden death of King Richard the Lionheart. As King John’s rule oppresses the already-poor people of England, Robin and his sidekicks take action against the moneygrubbing sovereign. A buff Russel Crowe commands the leading role as Robin Hood, and gives a believable portrayal of the passionate leader. His leading lady, Maid Marion, is played by Cate Blanchet, while the jovial Friar Tuck is portrayed by A Knight’s Tale’s Mark Addy. Blanchet shatters the perception of Marion as a flirtatious flounce with a solid performance of Marion as a strongwilled, independent landowner.
Reviewed by Kelsey Verboom Robin Hood is an excellent action film, although it doesn’t feature the mischievous, green leotard-wearing Robin Hood most know from English folklore. This version of Robin Hood is a precursor to the already-established tale of the heroic outlaw. It explores the backstory of Robin Longstride, or, Robin of the Hood, and the epic battle that eventually led to his status as fugitive of the law. The story is centred in 13th century England when a greedy King
Robin Hood is directed by Ridley Scott, who has produced mega-hits like Gladiator, American Gangster, and Black Hawk Down. Robin Hood shares some of Scott’s signature style — dynamic photography, believable action, and epic battle scenes. Woven between the action scenes is a love story between Marion and Robin Hood, which is later threatened by classic bad guy, Godfrey (Mark Strong). The plot moves along at a good pace, and because it isn’t just a retelling of the classic Robin Hood tale, it will leave you guessing as to Robin’s next move.

Garbage & Recycle bins have moved! TREASURE TROVE — Heather Purkall and Kent Kebe of the Radium Chamber of Commerce demonstrate how to find caches along the B.C. Rockies Treasure Trail. Photo by Dale Genest
Radium catches on to geocaching craze By Kelsey Verboom Pioneer Staff There’s hidden treasure in them thar hills. And to find it all you need is a Global Positioning System and the desire to hike. The Radium Hot Springs Chamber of Commerce recently launched an adventurous way to visit the valley with a series of geocaches called the B.C. Rockies Treasure Trails. The stashed-away treasures are part of a larger craze called geocaching, a social phenomenon that began in 2000 when Global Positioning Systems became widely available to the general public. American GPS enthusiast Dave Ulmer decided to test the accuracy of his device by hiding a bucket with tiny toys and a log book in the woods, posting its coordinates online, and encouraging others to go find it. The idea quickly caught on with other GPS and outdoor aficionados, an official website was formed, and geocaching was born. Now, anyone with a handheld GPS can bury their own cache or search the coordinates of already established loca-
tions. Clues or interesting information about each cache are often provided. Once the stowed container has been found, it’s common practice to take a trinket from it and leave one of your own for someone else to find. When Kent Kebe and Dale Genest of the Radium Chamber of Commerce heard about the trend and discovered a surprising number of local geocaches, they decided to create an organized system of caches located along points of historical or geological interest. Currently there are coordinates available for caches installed by the Conrad Kain Centennial Society at historical points of interest, and around the Bugaboo Provincial Park. Additional caches will soon be added and updated on the Chamber of Commerce website. “We’re getting more trails set up all the time. It’s a work in progress, of course. We want to do it right,” Mr. Kebe said. Eventually, Mr. Kebe and Mr. Genest hope to hold a geocaching weekend once the trail system is fully in place. For more information about the new geocaches: www.bcrockiestreasuretrails.com. For other local coordinates: www.geocaching.com.

Rare birds aided with fungus By Cam Gillies Nature Conservancy of Canada Most of us work hard to keep fungus and rot out of our houses. Not so for a rare woodpecker that prizes rotten trees above all others when building a home. Lewis’s Woodpeckers are a threatened species in Canada found only in dry areas of BC. They nest in cavities excavated in trees by heart rot decay, where invading fungus turns the inside of the tree to pulp. But in many areas trees with this rot are hard to find; often they have been cleared or have fallen. It can take 100 years or more for suitable trees to develop. This is where the Nature Conservancy of Canada is stepping in. They and several partner organizations including the Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program, the Ministries of Forests and Environment, and the Nature Trust of BC, are working to create more suitable nesting trees near Canal Flats. But how do you create rot in the heart of a healthy tree? In this case, the fungus is injected inside and left to work its magic. The anticipated result a few years on will be new nesting habitats for Lewis’s Woodpeckers. The Nature Conservancy is hosting a public demonstration of this innovative restoration technique on September 25th at Thunder Hill Ranch conservation
area. The organization has been working for many years to restore the ranch’s open grassland habitat. “Live trees with heart rot decay are the most valuable wildlife trees,” said arborist and forester Todd Manning, who pioneered these techniques in Canada. “They provide good nesting habitats for birds that excavate their nests and the tree usually remains standing longer.” Mr. Manning grows the heart rot fungus over several months before working with a tree climber to inject it in selected locations partway up the tree trunk. Once injected, the fungus takes a number of years to rot the centre of the tree, but the exterior survives. This work will not only benefit woodpeckers, but also a number of other nesting species. “Our focus is on restoring grassland habitat and creating nesting trees for Lewis’s Woodpeckers, but any cavity nesting species is likely to benefit,” says Nancy Newhouse, the Canadian Rockies Program Manager for the Conservancy. “This could include other woodpeckers, chickadees and bluebirds among others.” Anyone interested in watching can join a guided excursion on September 25th from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The group will meet at the Coy Hill rest area, 10 kilometres south of Fairmont. For more information, call 250-342-5521, or visit www.natureconservancy.ca/bc.
NATURE’S HELPING HANDS — Haley Kubian, Pauline Newhouse and Brodie Gillies (left to right) were some of the volunteers at the Nature Conservancy’s bee habitat ceation event on Saturday, September 18th. Helpers drilled holes in trees at Kootenay River Ranch to make homes for native bees. This Saturday, September 25th, the Conservancy will be working to make homes for the rare Lewis’s Woodpecker. n Floor o s u c Fo With David Wilson s Cork! I love it! What’s not to love? If you have been sitting on the fence about this product it might be time to come down. Customers rave how warm it is, how quiet and easy to clean. And, it’s suitable for most areas of the house. I can’t wait to put this in my house. In every building I lay cork — including a spa, a hair salon, a gift store and so many homes — owners lament they should have done it sooner.
The value of this product is incredible. What about cost? It’s not often I will say this, but look outside the brand names. The value isn’t there. We have found a number of great product lines that are better than the brand names and still include all the benefits. Think about it: It might be time to drop in and see us for more information on this and other surface solutions.

Turn Copper into Gold golf tournament returning By Kelsey Verboom Pioneer Staff For the eighth year in a row, golfers will take a swing at raising funds for the Columbia Valley Chamber of Commerce at the annual Turn Copper into Gold Golf Tournament. Players can sign up as individuals or as a team to play Copper Point Golf Course and join in a round of golf in the name of promoting local businesses. “It’s to support the Chamber, but it’s also to support each other in business,” event organizer Susan Smith said. “Copper Point Golf Course very generously donates the course for us to use.” Money generated by the tournament is put toward the mortgage of the Columbia Valley Chamber of Commerce building, which will eventually allow funds to be allocated to community projects once the building is paid off. The tournament will begin with a
shotgun start at noon on Tuesday, September 28th. A dinner at the Lion’s Club hall will follow, with a plethora of auction items up for grabs including a paving job from Skandia Concrete, jewelry, wine and accommodation within and outside the valley. For the first time since the tournament started, every golfer and volunteer will receive a limited edition watercolour print of Mount Nelson from local artist Carolyn Barzilay. Staff Sergeant Marko Shehovac will help emcee the event, and Tex Lortscher will serve as auctioneer. Earlier this week there was still space for seven teams in the tournament at a cost of $125 per golfer. To register, e-mail info@cvchamber.ca or call 250342-2844. MOUNT NELSON — This watercolour by Carolyn Barzilay will be given as a tee gift to all tournament participants.

RUN FOR A CURE — Rain couldn’t dampen the spirits of participants at Invermere’s 30th annual Terry Fox Run on Sunday, September 21st. They raised more than $2,000 for the Terry Fox Foundation, which will go towards researching new treatments, diagnosis techniques and cures for various forms of cancer. Photo by Kate Irwin
Valley residents continue Terry Fox’s fight against cancer By Kate Irwin Pioneer Staff Runners, cyclists and walkers took to the streets of Invermere on Sunday, September 19th, for the 30th annual Terry Fox Run. Participants could choose to run or ride a distance of three, five, eight or 10 kilometres as part of the event, which is a fundraiser held each year for the Terry Fox Foundation. Despite the rainy start to the day 62 people came along to support the Foundation, raising more than $2,000 towards cancer research. “I think it’s a great way to donate,” said Vanya Sokolowski, who completed the three kilometre loop with her children Emmylou and Lukas Grieve, aged five and two. “I get goosebumps just thinking about what Terry Fox did, he was an amazing person. Emmylou started taking part in the run when she was three months old, in her stroller.” The weekend’s run was held in conjunction with other Terry Fox events across the country and internationally, which are always held on the second Sunday after Labour Day. Spirits were high among the runners and cyclists, who set off from Invermere’s J.A. Laird School be-
tween 11 a.m. and 12 p.m., and travelled out along Westside Road and back. Stops were set up along the way which were staffed by volunteers handing out water and snacks. “I remember Terry Fox when he was running himself,” said Pedro Cebulka, who ran the full 10 kilometre loop. ”I wanted to do something for the cause. I remember Terry had a great heart; that’s why people are still following his lead today.” The worldwide, annual Terry Fox Runs are noncompetitive events, held to commemorate Terry Fox and his Marathon of Hope. His legacy is eight years older than Terry himself was when he died on his cross-Canada run. Over the years, the events held in his name have raised more than $400 million towards cancer research, with this year’s cross-Canada fundraising revenue up more than 20 percent. “We don’t figure running is that big of a sacrifice compared to what Terry Fox did,” said Dave McGrath, who brought his entire family along on Sunday to take part. “We run the full 10 kilometres, even the little ones ... cancer affects so many people, we feel if there were more resources around it could be beaten.” To learn more about the Terry Fox Foundation, or to make a donation, visit, www.terryfox.org.

Rockies at .500 just four games in By Steve Mantyka, Public Relations Director Rockies Hockey The Columbia Valley Rockies Junior Hockey Club opened their season with two wins — quite a bit ahead of last year — and more in tune with the efforts the coaching staff and volunteers have made to improve the team. On opening night, the team had a road win in Golden and a home Steve Mantyka win versus Kimberley. This past weekend, the Rockies traveled to Kimberley on Friday and played the Dynamiters and left two points in Kimberley as the Dynos earned a 5-2 win. On Saturday, the Rockies hosted the Golden Rockets. The Rockets lit the lamp twice before Kory Movold from Stephen Hynes sandwiched a score between three more Golden goals as the Rockets blasted out of town on the strength of a 5-1 win.
The Rockies have many returning veterans on the team and lots of new talent with players arriving daily, fighting for a roster spot. Included on the team this year are two Invermere boys, Geoff Wolfe, who returns after playing last year with the club, and newcomer Tryg Strand who is a rookie on the team. The Rockies play four games this week, with a Tuesday game in Invermere versus the Creston Valley ThunderCats, and Friday they host the Kelowna Chiefs. They head to Golden again on Saturday and play the Osoyoos Coyotes (welcome back to the league!) in Invermere on Sunday, with a special start time of 1 p.m. All other games start at 7:30 p.m. With the Rockies sitting at .500 and tied for second, third and fourth in the Eddie Mountain Division, it’s a good time to get in out of the rain and enjoy some great junior hockey while cheering on the boys. Also, come listen to the strong voice of local talent, singer and songwriter Jade Bowen. If you would like to volunteer some time with the Rockies, and we do appreciate all the volunteers, please drop me (Steve Mantyka) an email pr@rockieshockey.com or call 250-342-1535 and give a little. Remember, you owe more to the community than just living in it! See you at the rink!

Kootenay National Park of Canada Brûlage dirigé au parc national du Prescribed Burning, Canada Kootenay, Redstreak Mountain Fall 2010 Mont Redstreak - Automne 2010 Weather permitting, Parks Canada fire managers may begin prescribed burning operations as early as September 27th on Redstreak Mountain in Kootenay National Park (KNP) approximately 3 km east of the Village of Radium Hot Springs.
The goals of the Redstreak Mountain prescribed burn include helping to protect people and property from catastrophic wildfires by reducing forest fuel loads in the vicinity of Radium Hot Springs and to restore wildlife habitats. By re-establishing the ecological role of fire in the Columbia Valley, grasslands and associated habitat traditionally used by Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep and other wildlife will be restored.
KNP has a Smoke Notification List for those who are sensitive to smoke and would like advance warning of prescribed burn operations. We are currently updating this list in preparation for the planned Redstreak Mountain prescribed burn. If you want to be included on the list, please call Grant Neville, Fire Communications Officer at 250-347-2207. For more information on KNP’s Fire Management Program, check the website at www.pc.gc.ca/kootenay or contact the Fire Communications Officer.

Jeers to the older lady who stole my purple baby scrapbooking album from the garage sale in Castle Rock. Shame on you! You should have a little more morals than that. Heading north all the signs are covered up and heading south the construction signs are visible. Is that any way to run a company and keep our roads safe?

Local running couple are on a winning streak By Kate Irwin Pioneer Staff An Invermere couple have been celebrating sporting successes this summer with some record-breaking results in running events held across western Canada. Jakub Sumbera and his girlfriend Nadyia Fry are humble about their achievements, which include firstplace finishes for Jakub in five out of six races and setting a new course record in Revelstoke. Nadyia has also been training hard, finishing among the top three women in each of the six races the couple have entered, on courses ranging from alpine trail runs in Whistler, to Invermere’s own Loop the Lake. “We have enjoyed every race that we entered this summer,” Jakub said. “Although we have managed to do well, for us it is more about the experience, the challenge and getting out and enjoying each new area where we are racing.” The pair met while travelling in England, living for some time in New Zealand before making the move to Fairmont Hot Springs, where Nadyia had spent several summers. They have been enjoying the vibrant running community in the valley ever since, meeting friends and running companions along the way.
In the spring an Internet search provided all the information needed to plan a summer of running events, starting with Jasper’s Spring Run Off in May and ending with the Headbanger Trail Challenge on September 25th in Kootenay National Park. “It was at last year’s Headbangers event we heard about Crazy Soles, where Jakub now works,” Nadyia explained. “Then, we started to meet so many other people that run, in the year I’d say we met about 30 people ... the running community here is very supportive.” The pair love the travelling opportunities that come with the races they do, enjoying their on-foot exploration of each new place. Most important is challenging themselves and beating personal bests, rather than the competitive side of each race, Nadyia and Jakub agreed. They hope to encourage others to get involved with the sport they are passionate about and to take advantage of local running clubs, including the Saturday meet organized by Crazy Soles. “I hope we can encourage people to get out there and be more active,” Jakub said. “It doesn’t matter how good you are or how fast you can run. I do it because I like to be active and improve and I like the challenge FLEET FOOTED — Runners Jakub Sumbera and of races. Running is a good way to relax and take your Nadyia Fry are modest about a summer of podium finishes in six races across B.C. and A.B. Photo by Kate Irwin mind off day-to-day things.”
Green Zone: saying farewell to another golf season By Harold Hazelaar Pioneer Columnist
Golfing glory Joyce McLeod of Invermere scored her first ever hole-inone on Wednesday, September 8th at Radium Resort’s Ladies’ Club Championship. Ms. McLeod sunk the 176yard shot on hole 15 using her driver. Photo submitted
Well, just like that, we seem to be at the end of another golf season. A slow, wet and cold start similar to the cold wet end we are experiencing right now. Where is our Indian summer? Even if the weather didn’t completely co-operate this year, golfing in the valley was generally quite good. I mean the experience was good — not my game! The courses were in great shape, and the staff at all the courses I played were first class. It seems to me they are all trying to do their best to create an atmosphere that brings us back to them again. I had the opportunity to play in several fundraising tournaments this year and I believe it is fair to
say that our valley/community has supported many worthwhile causes to the best of our abilities. Kudos to everyone who organized a charity golf event or everyone who supported it by playing. It definitely isn’t all about winning. Just ask me. I am already planning my winter golf and will return to the links here next year even better than I was this year. That won’t take much effort! I am still patiently waiting for my friend Marko to respond to my challenge. I guess he figures if he waits long enough the courses will be closed and he will be off the hook. Not likely. Remember Marko, “Spring will come again.” See you on the tee-box next year. The Green Zone Quote of the week is by Jack Nicklaus: “You hear these guys saying, ‘Oh, I can’t play this course; it doesn’t suit my game,’ but that’s the biggest bunch of rubbish I ever heard. The whole idea of golf is that you have to adapt your game to the course you are playing.”

Social Service Society hosting community forum By Pioneer Staff The Windermere District Social Services Society, a non-profit society that provides services to individuals with developmental disabilities, needs your input. Today, there are young people with developmental disabilities living in the Windermere Valley. However, once high school is completed, there are limited services for these young adults. The Windermere District Social Services Society — as part of its upcoming strategic planning — will be holding a community forum on Wednesday, September 29th, at 7:00 p.m. at the Invermere Seniors Hall. According to the society’s accreditation coordina-
tor, Kirsten Haldrup, the purpose of the forum is to conduct an environmental scan by use of a survey to determine current and future needs within the specialneeds community. “We are interested in community input regarding what services are needed to help care for the developmentally disabled,” she said. The Windermere District Social Service Society is a non-profit organization which provides services to individuals with developmental disabilities in the Windermere Valley. The society has been in existence since 1958 and has a long, rich, history. Originally, the society provided services for the elderly at the ‘Pynelogs’ home, built by the late Robert Randolph Bruce, at Kinsmen Beach. Services were
later refocused to serve individuals with developmental disabilities. The Society provided them with residential, vocational, educational and recreational services. In 1989, residential housing was relocated from Pynelogs to Mount Nelson Place in Invermere. “We encourage all interested parties, consumers, family members, caregivers and professionals to attend. There will be panel presentations followed by an open invitation for questions, comments, and concerns,” she said. “Please help us gather information to plan for locally developed services within our community. Your input is needed!” Doors will be open to the public from 6:30 p.m. Coffee and goodies will be served after the meeting.

FAITH
Don’t be afraid; just believe By Pastor Wayne Frater Radium Christian Fellowship In Luke, 10:40-56, and also in Mark, 5:2143, there is a miracle recorded: the only daughter of a man named Jairus is restored to life. The story unfolds as Jesus, thronged by multitudes, has a man fall at His feet and begging Him, pleading with Him, to come to his house, because his only daughter, only 12 years old, was dying. Mark, 5:23, says Jairus “pleading fervently with Him” on his knees before Jesus. Have you ever been there? Desperate? Exhausted with worry? Sick with concern? Maybe you are there now. Maybe you have health problems, maybe financial problems, maybe your business or your marriage is in trouble. For Jairus it is his daughter. This isn’t just a daughter, this is “an only daughter”. This is “Daddy’s girl” only 12 and the Word says she lies at the point of death. As Jesus, heads towards Jairus’ house they are met by a messenger, his words are grim, Luke, 8:49 NLT, “Your daughter is dead. There’s no use troubling the Teacher now.” I can only imagine the grief that must have flood-

ed over Jairus. All hope is gone. His only precious daughter is dead. Guess what happens next. Jesus, reaching out in love, places His hand on Jairus’ shoulder, feeling his pain, knowing that Jairus faith has buckled, his only hope dashed. And Jesus says, in Verse 50, NKJ, ”Do not be afraid; only believe, and she will be made well.” The NLT says it this way, “Don’t be afraid; just have faith, and she will be healed.” And they carry on: Jesus refuses to leave Jairus alone with his grief but goes with him. Jairus comes to Jesus on the basis of his own worried, hoping faith, his faith is dashed, “your daughter is dead.” Jesus steps in with His faith. The rest is history. They arrive at Jairus house, Jesus, in Verse 54, NLT, “takes her by the hand and says in a loud voice, “My child, get up!” and at that moment her life returns and she immediately stands up!” Jesus promises us, in Hebrews, 13:5, that “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” And the words He told Jairus, in Luke, 8:50, “Don’t be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed,” are as real today, as they were then. No matter what you or I are going through, no matter how discouraged, depressed, or how hopeless it looks, Jesus is there. No matter what our friends say, “give up: your dream, your marriage, your business, is dead.” Don’t listen to them. Lean on Jesus, trust Jesus. It isn’t about Jairus, or his daughter, or our problems, it is all about Jesus. If we let Him, like Jairus did, He will take over, when we give up.
