Valley Parent 2 P A R E N T Parent
I
recently attended Brookstone’s high school graduation where I watched each set of parents go through a whole checklist of emotions—predominantly happiness closely followed by relief. There was that other look on their faces, too, as necks were hugged, and the young graduate’s faces glowed in the throes of anticipated adventures ahead. I clearly recognized that look on the parent’s face. I’ve had it myself—a look of bewilderment. When did our child become an adult? As a parent, weren’t we just at the pediatricians getting their three-month-old shots? Didn’t we just celebrate their first birthday party vowing to have just a small, family affair, but that train of thought was lost as the petting zoo arrived? Time flies, so make the most of it! It is a frequently tossed around cliché, but it always rings true. I’m ambushing this editorial to encourage you to snuggle with your babies and put down the phone. If you’re going to hang onto your phone, take photos and then more photos. Wallow in babyhood because this time with them doesn’t last long. This summer when you’re outside with your baby and it’s a battle to keep a sunhat on their little head, just grit your teeth and smile. Soon enough, it will be caps off in the air for your grad, and if you don’t stop in the moment now, you’ll be, well, bewildered. Speaking of another offering of sage advice, there’s the claim that babies don’t need anything but a drawer to sleep in. Really? As a new mother fervently begins to build her nest, the myriad of items for today’s discerning parents is an ever-evolving manufacturing line of new inventions and necessities. If you are shopping for new parents and don’t want to purchase something useful, you can always go the traditional route. Our Baby Shower Gift Guide has a good, local mix of both the practical and keepsakes. Lastly, high school graduation can seem like a far-off goal, but it’s never too late to plant the seeds for lifelong learning. Boosting your babies brain power is just the beginning of setting them up for the day that they will have their certificate in hand. And if your bundle of joy is keeping you “Up All Night Poppin’ Bottles” you can always tune into our featured parenting podcast of the same name and share in the trials and tribulations of child-rearing. Enjoy your babies and give them a squeeze for me. I miss those baby years.

Motherhood Podcast by Julie Jernigan

ast year friends Brooke Sullivan and Kat Canella gave birth to boys a day apart from each other. Because of this shared experience, they bonded over calls and texts asking the other, “Did you get any sleep last night?” and “How are you feeling today?” “It was nice to have someone to commiserate with who was on the same level,” Sullivan said. Then the question of starting a podcast jokingly arose since they were already sharing stories back and forth anyway, and there just happened to be a booth available to rent at StartUP Columbus. Thus, their podcast Up All Night Poppin’ Bottles was started. “We just thought we would love to talk about the good, the bad and the ugly of motherhood as we’re experiencing it,” she said. “We want it to be organic and unscripted, so it’s more relatable to other moms like us.” By day, Brooke Sullivan, who has a PhD in public health, works as the chief operating officer of West Central Georgia Regional Hospital. By night, she is a wife and mother to three (Price 11, Delaney 8 and new addition Whitt). Kat Canella works as a realtor with Coldwell Banker who is licensed in Georgia and Alabama and also a group fitness instructor. Just like their careers, their parenting styles couldn’t be more different. Canella calls herself “light crunchy” airing on the more organic side, while Sullivan is more the mom of convenience. “You will never meet more different people,” Sullivan said. “I think that’s why we work so well together and why we resonate with all kinds of moms. Kat can offer advice on cloth diapers whereas I use the disposable kind.” Currently there are eight episodes ranging in topics such as birth stories, postpartum depression, the fourth trimester, etc. Each episode averages about 15 minutes, which according to Sullivan was on purpose. “It’s for that busy mom, who doesn’t have the time to listen to a long episode, JUNE-JULY 2023 | Valley Parent

Nothing Sweeter than a Baby Shower at Golden Donut
S H O W E R V E N U E S
Whether it’s glazed, chocolate-covered, cream-filled or with sprinkles on top, life is better with doughnuts. That’s especially true in Columbus, which is home to the locally owned and family operated Golden Donut. While Golden Donut might be the first thing that comes to mind when locals crave a sugar rush, it also offers something that’s not necessarily on everybody’s menu. Golden Donut and baby showers goes together like coffee and crullers. “Our new location on Wynnton Road has a couple of spacious rooms available,” said operating partner Colt Miley. The seating capacity for the new location ranges from 10 to 25 people. “We do charge a small reservation fee of $75,” Miley explained. “This gets you the room, a staff party coordinator, two dozen glazed, four colors of sprinkles and four colors of icings. You can also get additional sprinkle and icing colors for an additional fee.” Operated by partners Colt and Erin Miley, Golden Donut is a longstanding tradition in Columbus, now with two locations. “Baby showers are new to Golden Donut,” Miley said. “Although our stores have been used for birthday parties for quite some time.” The goal is to offer a fun location for those working on a budget. There is just a small rental fee that includes all you’ll need for a memorable baby shower. “We do ask that no outside drinks be brought in,” Miley said. “We do
allow simple food options to be brought in like pizza, chips, etc.” Beyond the sweet treats, it’s the Golden Donut staff that promises to make the baby shower, or any celebration, special. “Our team members are amazing all around,” Miley said. “We pride ourselves in providing quality products and fantastic customer service. From normal transactions to celebrating birthday parties, our team members work hard to provide a great experience to everyone that we have the opportunity to serve.” And if you’re looking for something unique before the baby shower, consider Golden Donuts for the gender reveal. “We have only hosted one gender reveal party,” Miley said, “but we do get special requests for doughnuts that have pink or blue icings inside or on top.” ADV

Have a Baby Shower Full of Charm at The Wynn House As one of the crown jewels of Historic Columbus, the Wynn House has a reputation as the perfect wedding location. With its enchanting blend of Southern grace and elegance, the Wynn House is where memories and stories are born. It’s also where some guests of honor have yet to arrive. “The Wynn House is a preferred venue for many different types of celebrations,” said Executive Director Brooke Neville, “but we love hosting baby showers.” As executive director, Neville will help plan the perfect baby shower from start to finish. Shirley Williams is the cook who will prepare the delicious food that will be served and devoured on the day of your event. “It makes for a warm and welcoming arrival when Donovan Lewis, our culinary manager, greets your guests with a smile, a charming Jamaican accent and a glass of his famous Wynn House punch.” Baby showers are generally hosted in the front parlors of the historic home. The food is typically set up in the Piano Room and displayed on silver trays. Oftentimes tables are set up in the opposite parlor, known as the Gold Room and a chair for the mother-to-be is set up in front of a gift table should guests choose to open or display gifts. The rich history of the Wynn House is displayed throughout the house for guests to read. “But the staff is always ready to brag on the famous stories and legends of The Wynn House,” Neville added. Baby shower packages include a rental fee, meal choice (priced per person) plus any add-ons. All rentals include white linen tablecloths and napkins, personalized service and private dining rooms. Guests should also take advantage of the access to the wrap around porch and the newly renovated garden for photos. “The Wynn House Tea Menu is popular with baby shower hostesses,” Neville said. “You can choose five items off of our tea menu. The only thing you will need to bring is a flower 1240 Wynnton Rd. • 706.323.1895 • TheWynnHouse.com

BOOST BABY’S BRAIN POWER Y
our baby’s brain grows faster from birth to five years old than any other time in their life. Each day they are discovering how the world works, understanding both verbal and nonverbal communication, learning both fine motor and gross motor skills, how their bodies work, and how they relate to others around them. As parents, we want to create a nurturing environment that can help encourage learning and make the baby feel safe and loved. Here are some tips to help boost your baby’s brain power.
BABY TALK One of the best ways to boost your child’s developing language skills is to talk to them. Babies love to hear your voice, listen to the inflections in your tone and watch your facial expressions. Not sure what to say? Talk to your child about the world around them as you explore together. On a walk you can point out the trees and the sky or whether the breeze feels hot or cold. Sing songs or recite nursery rhymes to your child. Heather Lewis, mom of three and music teacher suggests incorporating music through singing lullabies and playing music in the car. “I used to sing the alphabet song, recite the pledge of allegiance, recite our address and phone number while they were strapped in the stroller on walks or in the car.” You can even use diaper changing time to smile, talk and sing to your child.

BOOK CLUBS Reading books with your child is a great way to help them learn new things. Bright, colorful books or books with contrasting colors are fun to look at. Point out objects, shapes and colors as you read. Mom and preschool teacher, Kara Thomas, suggests printing high contrast cards and hanging them by your baby’s changing table. Use reading time to snuggle with your child and let them know they are loved. Babies’ attention spans are short so don’t stress if they quickly lose patience with reading. The act of reading and interacting with them, even for a short time, still makes a difference.
HEALTHY CHOICES A diet that includes healthy protein, fruits and vegetables are important to fuel your child’s growing brain. It’s also important to make sure the baby is getting adequate rest both at night and during regular naps. This will help your baby be fresh and ready to take in the world when they wake up.
SNUGGLE One of the most important ways you can boost your child’s brain development is to make them feel safe and loved. “I consoled them and held them whenever they were upset,” said Angela Leaver, mom and early childhood education teacher. “I think this helps them form a healthy attachment to their parents. Social emotional health is super important.” You cannot “spoil” a baby by holding them too much. Physical touch is vital in showing your children that they are loved and safe and helps your baby’s brain grow and develop.
ROLE MODEL
If you are stressed, angry or sad, your baby will respond to your emotions. Creating a space that is safe for your baby to explore the world around them and experience the highs and lows of their emotions and how to appropriately respond to those feelings is important for your child’s development. Take care of your physical and mental health so you can provide the best environment for your child. You can also model good communication skills, the importance of reading and other healthy choices that will encourage your child’s development as well. During the first few years of life your child is learning to talk, walk and learn how the world works. They also learn that they are loved, cared for and safe. Teresa Marshall, grandmother and postpartum doula, says “Finger play, action songs like Peek-a-boo, reading, tummy time, baby wearing, massage and water play” are just a few ideas parents can incorporate to help babies’ brains grow. In a short time your child will be running, laughing, playing and reading their own books. You can give them a solid foundation by interacting with them and stimulating their already curious minds. vp 10
