REFLECTIONS on 50 Years MICHAEL R. BECKER Class of 1971 First, I would like to congratulate every one of us who has made it to 50 years. That by itself is an accomplishment of no small moment. I have enjoyed a wonderful career, but I cannot point to any one event that changed it or made a critical difference. Instead, a lot of events have accumulated to my good fortune. I graduated from Ohio Univ. in ’68 (with a wife; now 55 years and counting---one of those really good events). We enrolled in law school at the University of North Carolina and graduated in ’71 (I say “we” because she was there at every turn). My first job was with a tax-oriented firm in Raleigh, NC (another one of those auspicious events). I had the great good fortune to work with and under a great mentor for 6+ years---I still reflect upon what I learned from him and try to live up to his standards. Although I moved between firms too many times over the next many years, I always took with me valuable lessons learned from each association. We (Phil Lilly and Debbie Belcher – another one of those really fortunate decisions) established our own little firm in 2003 and have enjoyed our operation ever since. That enjoyment has kept me at it for so long. The set length of this comment, which I may have violated already, precludes me from commenting on how valuable working with our Bar Association has been over the years. Suffice it to say that working with Alex, Marion and Jill has been a treat. Will I retire? I suspect that I will if I live long enough; but it has been a great ride and I enjoy it too much to give it up just yet. I owe so much to so many that I can’t name them all. I am confident that I have had the great good fortune to attain (at least to my satisfaction) what the Greeks referred to as eudaimonia (Joe Blackmore once gave a marvelous speech about that being the goal of life). I am content.

REFLECTIONS on 50 Years JAMES BOWNAS Class of 1971 I am a graduate of Harvard Law School’s 1971 class, and I have practiced in the areas of wills, trusts and probate law and business counseling. I am a frequent speaker at continuing education seminars for lawyers, accountants and financial advisors. I’ve been active in the community donating time to several organizations including: Orange Township Business Association, Friends of the Library, Columbus Bar Foundation, Emerald City Players (Board of Directors), Prep Academy Schools (Board of Directors), Friends of the McCoy Center for the Arts, St. Francis DeSales High School Alumni Association (Chair, Planned Giving Committee), Xavier University Alumni Association (Past President) and the Ohio Bar Foundation. Though I am grateful for all I have learned and experienced in the past 51 years practicing law, I find it difficult to express how I feel to be honored in this moment. I am truly speechless. Thank you.

REFLECTIONS on 50 Years JAMES MELLE Class of 1971 After serving as a law clerk for two different judges and two more years as a state attorney, I continued my career as an associate with a firm here in Columbus. One of the partners had multiple sclerosis and, although I worked on other matters to begin with, more and more I was assigned cases with him. On occasion this involved pushing him in his wheelchair. To some it may not seem like an opportunity, but I learned from him and met his clients. When he retired, I became their labor and employment law attorney and continued working in that area until my retirement.

REFLECTIONS on 50 Years NANCY ROGERS Class of 1972 The fifty years since law school have offered experiences that were more fascinating, rewarding and varied than I dreamed possible as the first-year law student in the photo next to this entry. As a first-year student, I had plenty of moments of self-doubt and angst, but there has been no moment since that I regretted the decision to become a lawyer. All three of our children became lawyers-something I doubt would have happened had not my husband and I been so genuinely enthusiastic about our work and colleagues. Perhaps one aspect of my early experience differs from others attending today. It was enough of an oddity for women to be attorneys then that the Justice who presided over our swearing-in in November 1972 welcomed the “gentlemen of the bar.” Feeling a little like the “other,” I was grateful in those early years that many of my colleagues went out of their way to make me feel valued. That mattered to me and has increased my appreciation of the Columbus Bar’s work to welcome greater diversity in the legal profession through the Law Firm Partners Diversity program and the Columbus Bar Foundation’s support of the legal pipeline program for students from underserved communities, the Law and Leadership Institute.

REFLECTIONS on 50 Years RONALD ROWLAND Class of 1972 My desire to be “a lawyer” perhaps started early while watching TV shows, however there was never a focus or an understanding there were many areas of law to practice at that time. Upon entering OSU Law School in 1969, all first-year students were required to take Income I, and my professor was Leo Raskind who was very dynamic and articulate in the classroom. I recall his admonishment to students: “In responding to a tax question, the first word out of your mouth should be ‘Section’.” Of course, he was referring to a Section of the Internal Revenue Code which would be the basis of your authority for your answer to the question. Because of Leo Raskind, the practice of tax law (personal, corporate, estate and gift) became my practice goal. I was fortunate to further support this goal by obtaining an LL.M. in taxation from the University of Florida in 1976. In that same year, I started work at Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease, which provided me the opportunity to pursue my goal and develop as a practicing tax and business attorney, for which I will always be grateful.

REFLECTIONS on 50 Years JAMES SCHOTTENSTEIN Class of 1972 After obtaining my J.D. from the Moritz College of Law at The Ohio State University in 1972, I began working as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Ohio and was assigned to the Department of Natural Resources where, in addition to reviewing lake lands leases, I was given a budget of $30,000,000 to go out and obtain scenic easements from farmers throughout the State. I greatly enjoyed the negotiation process and dealing with real estate; however, as an Assistant Attorney General, I soon found myself defending the then-Governor for closing the State Parks. I found that I also had a taste for litigation. One evening, I was working on a real estate contract for a family member, and a classmate of mine was representing the other party. My classmate revised the contract to change the Federal Tax Consequences of the agreement and explained that the information was something he had learned at the Master of Laws program at New York University. I left the Attorney General’s office and obtained an LL.M. in taxation from New York University in 1974. After returning to Columbus, I continued to work with real estate matters, litigation and other areas but thereafter, the tax knowledge gleaned from my LL.M. studies permeated my entire practice.

REFLECTIONS on 50 Years KIM L. SWANSON Class of 1972 In May 1972, I joined the firm Dunbar, Kienzle & Murphey. To my everlasting gratitude, my first assignment was to be Dick Murphey’s “second” in the representation of Muirfield, Ltd., which was commencing a public offering to finance the development of Muirfield Village. Having Dick as a mentor and lifelong teacher, confidant and best friend was the most important development in my legal career and life. Getting to represent Jack Nicklaus as my first client was pretty cool, despite the fact that Jack knew me only as the “guy working with Murphey”. The area where Muirfield was to be located was rugged with limited access to public facilities, in particular, no sewer system. Litigation was pending over the extending of a sewer line being constructed from Columbus. Evidence of “prior use” of sewage facilities on the property was required. I was assigned to flush the toilet in the construction trailer and provide an affidavit to that effect. Based on my affidavit, the sewer line was extended to Muirfield, the public offering was successful, and Muirfield Village became a reality. Through growth and mergers, our firm, Squire Sanders, became a firm of national prominence over the next 50 years. I had the opportunity to represent some of the most successful and influential financial clients in central Ohio, and nationally, in transactions involving millions and billions of dollars, but I have never forgotten the exhilaration of my first representation and successful public offering. Each year during the Memorial Tournament, I bask in the knowledge that due to my legal efforts, the golfers are afforded clean and sanitary indoor plumbing facilities. Not a bad legacy for a native of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
