Beechwold Custom Jewelry will create your bridal or engagement ring in any style using different karats of white gold, rose gold, yellow gold, palladium, platinum and sterling silver. “Rather than toot my own horn I prefer my customers to hear what others have to say” said Hoefs: • “I didn’t want to drop it off just anywhere, We took the ring in on Saturday, it was ready by Tuesday, and it fits perfectly “ • “I talked to Gustavo a little about wedding bands, and will absolutely be checking with him when we’re ready to make that purchase. Very highly recommended” • “I plan to take some outdated family jewelry to him to see what kind of

cool ideas he has for them — based on the rings and pendants that he has created in his cases, I’m really excited to see what he might come up with!” • “Mr. Gustavo worked with me, asking questions about what I wanted, answering my questions and clarifying when I didn’t understand, then doing a lovely sketch of the final ring. I now have a lovely vintage style ring with beautiful hand-engraved designs on the band and around the stone. “ • “My daughter and I recently worked with Gustavo at Beechwold Custom Jewelry designing a neckless for my wife for Christmas; the experience could not have been better. His suggestions were spot-on and helpful, he worked within our budget, and the finished piece of jewelry was stunning, exceeding our high expectations. More importantly, my designer wife loved it … and she has a pretty critical eye for art and design.” Learn more online at ColumbusDiamondRing.com or call (614) 268-0012. Know your saving options Everyone knows the importance of having money saved, but we also know that sometimes life can get in the way. Unexpected expenses such as family or health emergencies, being laid off from a job, car problems or simply needing a new furnace can quickly drain a savings account without proper planning. Here are a few options to help grow your savings. 1. Find the savings account that’s right for you: Most banking institutions offer many different savings accounts with different interest rates, and it’s important to find the one that fits your plan. Perks such as automatic savings transfer or higher interest rates based on the amount in your account are just a few things to consider. 2. Consider a Health Savings Account: During a health emergency, finances are the last thing you want to worry about. Health care costs can accumulate quickly, even after your insurance covers some of the expenses. Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) can help offset most, if not all of your outof-pocket expenses, and can be used for you, your spouse and your dependents. 3. Get higher rates by saving more over time: If you can afford to place your money in deposit for a set period of time, a certificate of deposit might be right for you. For a limited time, Telhio Credit Union will provide a $200 new certificate bonus when you invest $15,000 in a CD with terms 18 months or longer. * Telhio Credit Union is open to everyone who lives, works, worships or attends school within Franklin County and surrounding communities. Founded in 1934, originally as the credit union for the Columbus Telephone

Everyone is an honored guest at Worthington’s one-of-a-kind jewelry store

When Bob Capace founded Worthington Jewelers in 2000, his goal was to create a store where locals would feel at home and receive outstanding value. “Whether you come in for a $5 watch battery or $5,000 engagement ring, I want you to feel like an honored guest,” he said. Located at 692 High Street on Worthington’s historic Village Green, the store has become a focal point for downtown Worthington. In 2011, a Craftsman-style addition to the original brick building nearly tripled jewelry display space. Although he initially opened Worthington Jewelers with a partner, Bob and his wife Theresa Capace became sole owners last December. “With our son and daughter working here, it’s truly a family business,” he said. “We’ve also retained long-term managers Nancy Taylor Crilley and Vicki Warnecke and a staff of 20 professional goldsmiths and jewelry consultants. Their dedication to customer satisfaction is a big part of our success.” Capace’s father was the inspiration for his customer service philosophy. “My dad used to say that to succeed in life you need to surround yourself with trusted professionals – a doctor, lawyer, accountant, insurance agent and jeweler,” he recalled.

“I want to be your jeweler.” As a full-service jeweler, Worthington’s offerings range from jewelry sales and design to repairs and appraisals. The store specializes in custom, one-ofa-kind pieces, but that doesn’t mean prices are expensive. “Our focus is on delivering more bang for your buck,” Theresa Capace said. “Our custom designs often cost much less than a comparable designer piece.

Plus, they’re made right here in Worthington, and we guarantee the workmanship for life.” With more than 1,300 designs on display, Worthington Jewelers also has central Ohio’s largest selection of engagement and wedding rings. A wide selection of diamond and coloredgemstone fashion jewelry, plus popular estate jewelry cases, round out its in-store inventory. Bob Capace noted that a lot of

jewelry stores are intimidating, with armed guards and locked doors. “We want to be the opposite of that. When you come in, we try to set you at ease, even make you laugh. You can stop by with kids and dogs in tow or wearing jeans or sweats. We’re just glad you came.” The store’s jewelry consultants work as a team and earn wages instead of commissions. “We never want anyone to

feel pressured,” Bob Capace said. “Our goal is to teach you enough about diamonds and jewelry so you feel comfortable with your decision.” The company also buys diamonds and old, unwanted gold and silver jewelry, sterling flatware, coins and select high-end watches. “As part of our green initiatives, we refurbish jewelry for resale or use the gold and gemstones in repairs,” Bob Capace said. The store offers a 50 percent extra trade-in allowance for those who choose to exchange old jewelry for new. Community involvement is a high priority for the Capaces. They provide annual support for Worthington Schools and are active in the Worthington Chamber of Commerce and Olde Worthington Business Association. Numerous other local organizations such as the McConnell Arts Center and Worthington A.M. Rotary also benefit from their donations. Ultimately, the Capaces strive to be a local resource. “We hope that eventually everyone in Worthington will stop by and get to know us,” Theresa Capace said. “Even if you just need a complimentary jewelry cleaning, we’re happy to be of service.”

Mary Young is almost BEFORE speechless as stands in the showroom of Begley Upholstering to pick up her antique loveseat. “I can’t believe the transformation, it’s simply beautiful! This loveseat belonged to my grandfather and is very special to me and I needed someone special to recover it. I’m so glad I found Begleys”. Since 1968 the Begley family has been hearing such compliments. Robb Begley, second generation explains, “My father would tell me that people will ‘care how much you know once they know how much you care.’ And we try to prove how much we care on every piece we work on. So when I hear compliments like Mrs. Young’s, it means the world to me.” It’s clear that the artisan craftsmanship is what gets Robb excited about his business. He is always willing to walk customers through his workroom and point out the detailed work that is performed at their Clintonville location. Frames glued, springs tied, padding replaced. All neces-

Seniors with untreated hearing loss more likely to develop dementia Brought to you by: Dr Natalie Bevilacqua, Au.D. Doctor of Audiology House of Hearing Worthington OH A hearing impairment can be frustrating, not only for the individual suffering from the hearing loss, but for their friends and family as well. Scientists have recently discovered that, if left untreated, the problem could lead to a much more serious health issue. A recent study by Johns Hopkins Medicine found that even people with mild degrees of hearing loss are more likely to also suffer from dementia, memory loss, and even more likely to have Alzheimer’s. Although no direct link between hearing loss and dementia has yet been found, the study suggests that an untreated hearing loss could lead to dementia by making individuals more socially isolated, which is a known risk factor for dementia and other cognitive disorders and is often common in those experiencing a hearing loss. Researchers used data from the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging to track 639 participants whose hearing and cognitive abilities were tested at the beginning of the study and then again every two years. The researchers found

What can I do?

We invite you to stop by our office at 885 High St. to be tested by an audiologist if you think you are experiencing hearing loss. Compared with normal hearing, those participants with hearing loss had up to five-times the risk of developing dementia. The more hearing loss they had, the higher their likelihood of developing dementia and Alzheimer’s. that participants with hearing loss at the beginning of the study were significantly more likely to develop dementia by the end of the study in 2008.

How do I know if I have a hearing loss?

Common symptoms of a hearing loss include the following:

• Feeling that people “mumble” or “don’t speak clearly” • Asking people to repeat or clarify what they have said • Increased difficulty understanding in noisy restaurants • Feeling isolated from conversations with friends or family • Tinnitus (ringing in the ears) • Being told the television is up too loud

If you or a loved one are experiencing any of the above symptoms or suspect a hearing loss, the first step is to have your hearing tested by a local audiologist to establish if indeed a hearing loss is present. If a hearing loss is identified, hearing aids are often the best treatment option. Hearing aids range in style, technology level and price point. You and your audiologist will work together to decide what hearing aids would be the most appropriate option for your hearing and lifestyle. Researcher’s findings may offer a starting point for interventions, even as simple as hearing aids, to delay or prevent dementia by improving patients’ hearing. Properly fit hearing aids may contribute significantly to the rehabilitation of a patient with hearing loss.

LaBuda’s advantage is her team The LaBuda Advantage team was off and running. Today, the LaBuda Advantage consists of two full-time Buyer’s Agents, including her daughter, Erin, her Listing Specialist and three administrative staff members – the Marketing Director, Transaction Manager and Listing Coordinator. Jo-Anne’s talent for finding people’s strengths has resulted in a team of specialists whose goal is to create the best experience and most successful outcome for each client.

At present, there are more than 5,800 licensed Realtors in the greater Columbus market. While the typical agent handles an average of 12 transactions a year, 90% of homes are sold by the top 10% of the agents in the area. One of those in that top group of agents is Jo-Anne LaBuda, whose team, known as the LaBuda Advantage, closed more than 150 transactions in 2013 – the majority of them in the Worthington School District. Her story is an inspiring one for anyone hoping to be successful in real estate.

An exciting opportunity

Early years Jo-Anne got her Ohio real estate license in February of 1988, exactly 25 years ago. She had worked in the industry for seven years, at Baird & Warner in Chicago, prior to having children and moving around the country with her husband, Mark. The family finally put down roots in Worthington, and Jo-Anne went back to work. She worked as a single agent at a local Worthington firm for seven years and then moved to a successful Re/ Max office here in town where she worked for another seven years.

Jo-Anne LaBuda and her team closed more than 150 transactions in 2013, the majority of them in the Worthington School District.

Building a team It was during this period that she began to assemble a team. At that time, the team concept was very new in the Columbus market. The few “ teams” in existence were made up primarily of two or three agents who got together and shared an administrative assistant. In 1996, Jo-Anne hired Patti Minister to be her full-time assistant. Ten months later, she brought in Nicki Campbell as Marketing Director. As the

former Advertising Director of Los Angeles Magazine, Nicki put her marketing skills to work for the team’s clients and marketed the LaBuda Advantage (the newly coined name of the team) to homeowners in the northern suburbs. The team’s primary niche was, and still is, the Worthington School District. Soon afterwards, Jo-Anne brought in her first Buyer’s Agent, then another, and, eventually an experienced Listing Specialist, Lynn Nadler.

In 2000, Jo-Anne and another successful Realtor were approached by representatives of a company known as Keller Williams, headquartered in Austin, Texas, regarding opening an office here. It would be the first office in the Ohio Valley. The idea was intriguing, but a bit frightening, and they turned it down. As time went on, however, Jo-Anne became more and more impressed by the company’s founder, Gary Keller, and by the company’s emphasis on integrity, teamwork and education. The opportunity to be a part of this exciting company and to be an owner of a new business was too attractive to pass up.

Keller who? Two years later, Jo-Anne and her husband, Mark, joined forces with five other agents from different companies in the area to launch the first Keller Williams market center in the Ohio Valley region. The market center, known as Keller Williams Capital Partners, opened in August, 2002, with the seven owners and eight additional agents. At the time, Keller Williams had virtually no name recognition in Central Ohio. When the signs went up that first day in front of dozens of Worthington-area homes, the question on everyone’s lips was, “Keller who?” Those days are long gone. Today, Keller Williams Capital Partners is one of many Keller Williams market centers across the Ohio Valley. KW Capital Partners now has 175 licensed agents and has grown to be the largest single-office brokerage in Central Ohio in terms of production. The office building at 100 E. Wilson Bridge Road, purchased by the owners in 2006, contains a state-of-the-art training center in which classes , workshops and meetings are held on a daily basis. Nationally, Keller Williams has grown from 17,000 agents in 2002 to 93,000 agents, making it the largest real estate company in the country.
