BY JOHN ROSS

The Buckeye State might not have mountains, oceans or other big-ticket adventure attractions. But if you go to school in Central Ohio, you’ve got hundreds of places to hike, bike, fish, paddle, camp and discover something new. Writing about the outdoors, I’ve discovered a fair share of them — and learned that the wild side lies closer than most people might think. As you settle into your new digs, here’s how to ease your way into the great outdoors. BUY GOOD SHOES. During most of my outdoor excursions, the most important piece of gear I bring is my shoes. If you splurge on anything, make it footwear: comfortable, lightweight, durable, waterproof hiking shoes with grippy soles. Merrell’s Moab Gore-Tex XCR is a great choice.

GO WITH A GROUP. Central Ohio has a friendly, knowledgeable outdoor community, and numerous groups welcome newbies along on guided trips. Check out Columbus Outdoor Pursuits and The Columbus Outdoor Adventurers, which like to hike, bike, paddle and camp.

TAKE CLASSES. Additional coursework is probably the last thing on your mind, but outdoor education is almost always fun. Local retailers like The Outdoor Source and Clintonville Outfitters host regular how-to sessions and gear demos — a great way to get started or refresh rusty skills.

BRING A MAP. Most parks and preserves operate on shoestring budgets, so brochures and trail guides aren’t always available on site. Be sure to print out your own color version before you head out.

START SLOW. Before you plan that first trip on the Appalachian Trail, try an activity that you can conquer in an afternoon. I’d suggest an easy five-mile hike at Blendon Woods Metro Park in Westerville (pictured here) or a leisurely river paddle at Trapper John’s Canoe Livery in Grove City.

71. SOAK UP THE SOUND AT THE FAMED NEWPORT MUSIC HALL 1722 N. High St., Campus 614-294-1659 promowestlive.com One of the most legendary rock clubs, the Newport also holds the distinction of being the longest continually running rock club in the country. Catch a national act or a big local show, and it usually won’t set you back more than $20.

MAKE A LIST. Getting active, trying a new sport, exploring exotic places — these things take time and practice. Write down a few seasonal goals and post the list where you’ll see it every day. JOHN ROSS IS THE ASSISTANT EDITOR AT COLUMBUS MONTHLY, WHERE HE WRITES ABOUT THE OUTDOORS AND OTHER TOPICS
