Even kids can get in on the fun at the 2010 BIA Parade of Homes. In addition to exploring cool kid’s hideaways in many of the Parade homes, such as playrooms and secret lofts, pint-sized visitors can spend their time playing video games, watching movies, making crafts or just playing around in The Kids Village hosted by Fun Day Events and Mr. Game Room. This year’s Parade is all about having a home in the center of it all with family close by, so this is a great time to begin a new tradition of bringing the whole family to the Parade for a day of inspiration, amazement and just plain fun. The Kids Village is open Monday through Saturday, from noon to 9 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 6 p.m., for children 2 to 12 years old, and costs $10 per child (children 12 years and younger get into the Parade for free). Keep a busy home stylish for the whole family by using innovative storage For busy families, finding ways to keep a home fresh, family-friendly and stylish can be challenging. But there are ways to stay organized without sacrificing luxury. With a little ingenuity, it’s possible to create a home that allows little ones to roam and play while providing a stylish living space for grown-ups. Many of this year’s Parade homes incorporate secret kids’ lofts, playrooms and bedroom retreats. But even if a floor plan does not allow for a special “no grown-ups allowed” space, parents still can create “declutter detours” to keep kids tidy and homes beautiful. Denise Blankemeyer, coowner of American Furnishings in Columbus, also partners in a home organization and staging

service. Blankemeyer helped design the New England Homes Parade house, and she said the No. 1 rule to organizing kids is to establish clear drop zones. “It always works best when they come in, and it’s the first thing they do,” she said. The New England mudroom incorporates bins, built-ins and hooks to help keep everything in its place.

Blankemeyer also suggested using recycling bins, baskets or lockers to organize things out of sight. Kids should feel ownership of their storage, she said. Use the art they make at school or handmade nametags to label a certain basket, locker or bin for each child. “That way they have a space they know is just for their stuff,” she said. If parents can create a separate

play area, they should keep color and pattern in mind when designing. Pick fabrics and paint colors that disguise stains. Hard-surface flooring cleans up more easily, while area rugs create a soft surface for falls or horseplay. Teaching children some organizational skills of their own also can be helpful. Get a family calendar to write down chores and schedules, and help kids keep their own rooms and closets tidy. Blankemeyer said almost any child’s bedroom has enough space for a storage bench at the foot of a bed or a toy chest. She also suggested using small vintage lockers as nightstands. Most importantly, Blankemeyer said, be sure to communicate expectations. When kids know exactly where to unload and putting their things away becomes a point of pride, it’s unlikely they’ll leave a trail of “toy crumbs” in their wake. These days, the average American family is more plugged in than ever before. With the prevalence of the Internet and smart phones, it seems connectivity is on everyone’s mind. The 2010 BIA Parade of Homes is no different. Connectivity is at the heart of this year’s Parade, running July 24 to August 8 at Ackerly Park in New Albany. This year’s event is connected to a long history of showcasing exciting new home communities in one of central Ohio’s best neighborhoods. 2010 marks the Parade’s fourth visit to New Albany since 1991, and the first time it has returned since 1999. “It’s certainly time to take the Parade back to New Albany,” said Jim Hilz, executive director of the BIA. The 2010 Parade features eight beautiful custom homes decked out with the latest and greatest features in the heart of the village. “I think it will be nice for the BIA guests to come back to New Albany to see how the community

has matured over the years,” said Scott McAfee, public information officer for New Albany. “People (returning) will get the sense that there’s so much more here now.” And visitors to this year’s Parade will be in a prime location to gauge just how much New Albany has grown, because what’s especially unique about this year’s location is how connected it is to the New Albany community. “It’s unique in that it’s located close to a lot of amenities,” Hilz said. Within walking distance of the shops and restaurants of Market Square, the school campus, library, arts venues and 27 miles of leisure trails, Ackerly Park establishes what Hilz said is a first for Parade locations: a new living community that comes ready made with many of the amenities of a well-established community. The 2010 Parade offers the best at-home amenities as well. Featuring a variety of beautiful architectural details, this year’s homes showcase New Albany’s signature Georgian style with modern twists and classic touches. The sprawling yet extremely livable floor plans range from around 4,300 to 5,600 square feet. Home prices range from $725,000 to $950,000. As visitors have come to expect, the Parade will connect them to the hottest design and building trends. But new for visitors this year will be the Parade’s connection to a few of the nations’ favorite interior design

personalities. This year’s event features visits from HGTV stars Frank Fontana, of Design on a Dime fame; and Dear Genevieve star, Genevieve Gorder, who appears courtesy of Whirlpool, JENN-AIR and M/I Homes. Fontana will meet with and answer questions from Parade visitors on Sunday, July 25. Gorder will visit the following Saturday on July 31. Gorder will appear at the Parade, in part, to celebrate M/I Homes’ continued connection to the event. The homebuilder’s 25th Parade home is this year’s Foundation House. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this beautifully appointed five-bedroom home, which includes a gourmet kitchen, brick patio and bonus suite, will benefit Nationwide Children’s Hospital and BIA Foundation-related charities. “M/I has found that it is important to show our new and innovative features and designs in our Parade home,” said Theresa Lynn Collins, M/I Homes president. “This is one of the many reasons that guests visit the Parade of Homes. Having national talent will draw even more members of the Columbus community and other guests from many parts of Ohio and potentially neighboring states.” Wherever Parade guests might hail from, they are sure to be inspired by the innovative details that can be found throughout this year’s homes including: • “Green” features such as AEP Gridsmart technology in all of the homes, high efficiency appliances

and windows, and even a “living” rooftop deck • Spacious gourmet kitchens and spalike baths with all the latest technologies • Generous master suites with extras such as private decks, beverage and sitting areas, and his and her closets with innovative storage • Beautifully landscaped outdoor entertaining “rooms” that bring the indoors out • Bonus suites, pubs, workout rooms and secret kids’ lofts • Custom cabinetry, trim and detailing throughout But perhaps one of the most telling trends found throughout this year’s Parade homes is their focus on floor plans that keep families more connected. Open floor plans, eat-in kitchens and first floor bonus rooms increase the opportunity for families to remain close even while engaged in different activities. Nilay Bhatt, president of Dani Homes, said the Dani house features everything one would need for everyday living on the first floor, including a first-floor master suite and dual heating and cooling zones upstairs and down. The Parade also helps kids and parents stay connected in a new way this year by making it easier to

HGTV personalities Frank Fontana and Genevieve Gorder bring their design perspectives to the Parade

PARADE Each year, the Building Industry Association (BIA) of Central Ohio and participating builders work to give Paradegoers an event that highlights interior design trends and inspires people to try them in their own homes. This year, the BIA Parade of Homes will inspire in a new way by inviting nationally recognized designers to the event. Frank Fontana, host of the HGTV’s show Design on a Dime, will attend the Parade to host both a question and answer session as well as a meet-and-greet. Additionally,

Whirlpool, JENN-AIR and M/I Homes are bringing Genevieve Gorder, host and designer of the HGTV series Dear Genevieve, to the M/I Parade Home. “Genevieve has the talent to draw the inspiration from within an individual and bring that out in the physical elements and characteristics of the home she is designing,” said M/I Homes Area President Theresa Collins. “The M/I Homes’ Parade Home has been built with this in mind.” Jim Hilz, executive director of the BIA, hopes Fontana and

2010 BIA PARADE HONOREE AND FOUNDATION HOUSE BUILDER

M/I HOMES

This year marks the 25th year of participation by M/I Homes, Inc. in the BIA Parade of Homes. As a fitting celebration of their many years of dedication to the industry, the BIA is proud to name them the official Parade honoree. As evidence of their ongoing support for the community and the industry, M/I Homes is also the builder of the 2010 BIA Foundation House. Throughout the Parade, M/I will celebrate these special landmarks. For instance, M/I has partnered with one of their key suppliers, Whirlpool/Jenn-Air, to host HGTV celebrity and design expert Genevieve Gorder for a special celebration on Saturday, July 31. Since 1983, the BIA has included the Foundation House as a charitable element of the annual Parade. The result has been more than $1.6 million donated to designated charities, including Nationwide Children’s Hospital as the major beneficiary, and others such as The Columbus Housing Partnership, Habitat for Humanity and The Com-

munity Shelter Board. M/I Homes was a founding member of the BIA Foundation and also served as the Foundation House builder in 2004, when the Parade was held at Sherman Lakes in Galena. “M/I Homes is proud to be the builder of the BIA Foundation House, and we’re also very proud of our 25 years of participation in this great event,” said Theresa Lynn Collins, area president for M/I Homes. “This is consistent with our company’s core values and enhances our commitment and our mission as a contributing partner within the central Ohio community.” M/I has been a longtime supporter of the BIA and a consistent presence in central Ohio since the company was started in 1976. It has been a BIA Registered Builder since the program’s inception in 1988. Registered Builders are an elite group of builders within the BIA who have taken the extra step of having their credentials – including credit, references and education – thor-

oughly reviewed and approved by the BIA Registered Builder Committee on an annual basis. Company founder Irving Schottenstein was named BIA’s Builder of the Year in 1985. The award is given to a builder member for maintaining professional excellence, supporting the standards and policies of the association, and encouraging the American dream of home ownership. The award now is named after Schottenstein. M/I Homes, Inc., has been building homes in central Ohio since 1976 and is one of the nation’s leading homebuilders. The company serves a broad segment of the housing market including first-time, move-up and luxury homebuyers. M/I homes built for each Parade during the past 25 years have provided attendees with a glimpse of their quality construction and unique design, while helping M/I to become a household name.

MESSAGE FROM THE

PRESIDENT On behalf of the Building Industry Association of Central Ohio, we are thrilled to present the 2010 BIA Parade of Homes at Ackerly Park in New Albany. I can’t express enough the sense of pride the BIA has in presenting an event of such a high level of quality and design. This year’s premiere showcase of spectacular homes certainly will be an extra special treat. I would like to thank The New Albany Company and the Village of New Albany for hosting this year’s Parade and providing such a unique venue for the event. The eight builders featured in the Parade range from high-volume companies to small, highly customized builders. This year we ZENIOS MICHAEL also have two first-time Parade builders. Ackerly Park is a unique site for the Parade in ZENIOS that it is situated within walking distance of the New Albany Market Square. The site, developed by the New Albany Company, takes advantage of New Albany’s many amenities and is within walking distance of the library, The McCoy Community Center for the Arts, the school campus, country club, parks, places of worship and Market Square shops. The new neighborhood is perfect for individuals and families looking for connectivity in a convenient location. The BIA Foundation House, built this year by M/I Homes, continues the tradition of giving back to the community by donating a portion of its proceeds to the BIA Foundation. The Foundation’s primary beneficiary is Nationwide Children’s Hospital. M/I Homes also is celebrating its 25th year of Parade participation. As always, we are thankful to the many community partners and event sponsors that have helped to make the Parade a success. The Village of New Albany is an enthusiastic participant in supporting the Parade. They view the event as an opportunity to introduce guests from the region to the beauty of the community and the many amenities of the New Albany lifestyle. During a time when dollars are tight, we have an extra level of appreciation for our event sponsors: Union Savings Bank, gridSMART from AEP Ohio, Time Warner Cable, Whirlpool Corporation, JENN-AIR, Subaru and Scioto Valley. This year we have enhanced the Parade experience by featuring two HGTV stars, Frank Fontana of Design on a Dime, and Genevieve Gorder of Dear Genevieve. We also have added the Kids Village by Fun Day Events. This is a great place for kids to have fun while Mom and Dad enjoy the homes. We also have expanded hours on Friday through Sunday to provide attendees more flexibility to enjoy the Parade experience. Not everyone lives in a Parade home, but this event is sure to inspire all with lots of ideas. Parade homes offer top-shelf amenities and the latest in

technology and design BY SUSAN DALZELL

Whether it’s the opportunity to relax in a Hollywood-inspired bathroom, easily download videos to televisions throughout the house or entertain friends at an outdoor bar, luxurious amenities abound in the homes featured in the 2010 BIA Parade of Homes. This year’s Parade in New Albany’s Ackerly Park showcases homes designed and decorated to provide their future occupants with a resortlike experience emphasizing ease of living. “I find people now are not interested in ‘bigger as better’ but ‘better as better’ – better material, better design and better concept,” said architect Kevin Knight of Kevin Knight & Company. “Now we’re focused on lifestyle. How can the home be a better place to live? It’s all about reinventing the home as a retreat.” One way of achieving that is by designing rooms that help improve a family’s quality of life. The Knight home features a garden room with a washer and dryer, built-in lockers, a 10-foot countertop with a sink and a 10-by-9-foot window. “You could grow your seedlings there in the spring or raise herbs,” Knight said. “A vegetable garden is immediately outside the door and around the corner is an outside 18

wood fired oven and a grill.” The Weaver Custom Homes house includes a family resource room that’s more than a mudroom. “It’s a very functional area for busy families and quite trendy right now,” said Weaver President Merle Stutzman. The space includes a wall of lockers, a bench seat with coat hooks above and a desk with room for a computer. To keep the family organized, there are mail slots, a corkboard, an erasable calendar and a charging station for phones and iPods. Like many of this year’s Parade homes, the Weaver house uses the latest technology to make life a little easier. Small touches include an electronic, revolving shoe carousel in the master bedroom closet. On a larger scale, the house is wired for downloading music and video. “You could sit in the resource room and control entertainment throughout the house,” Stutzman said. Audio and video can be controlled by phone or remotely on the Internet, and controlling lighting, heating and cooling is also an option. Surround sound is a key feature in the basement. Rather than design a dedicated theater room, the Weaver home uses a rec room

concept. “We’ve found that people don’t want to spend money on just a theater room,” Stutzman said. “In this space, you can have the guys over and play pool, have drinks at the bar, and watch the game.” Entertaining is a key concept for the Knight home as well. The garage doubles as a party barn. “It’s a large space with three traditional garage doors, but at either end there are also two large barn doors that can open up if you want to have a party,” Knight said. Aesthetics, even in the garage, are important. “The concrete floor is accented with white oak planks.” Inside, many Parade homes feature crisp neutral interiors with bright accents. “In general, we’re doing backgrounds of whites and creams, with brighter accent colors in items like pillows. The neutral palette makes it easier to change things out,” said Kay Green of Kay Green Design, who decorated the M/I Homes Parade house. Even kitchens are getting the neutral touch, Green said, with white-painted cabinets coming back into vogue. Bathrooms are still places to splurge. “The main thing in bathrooms is glamour – beautiful tiles, beauti-

ful marble, luxurious tub,” said the designer of the Tuckerman Home Group house, Michael McKibben, of Michael McKibben Interiors. “The one in this house has a Hollywood feel.” Hardwood floors are popular as well. The Knight home features reclaimed oak floors from barns in Holmes County. The wood is milled locally into flooring and coated with a water-based finish. Other environmentally friendly attributes that represent the latest in homebuilding are found throughout the Parade homes, including high-efficiency appliances and gas furnaces as well as upgraded insulation. Taking these green steps means families can feel good not only about the way their homes live and look, but about their ecological footprint. Feeling good is important, Knight said. “If you’re going to spend the money to build a house, you should have fun with it. ‘What can I do to enjoy life and enjoy my family?’ That’s what it’s all about.”

Small-scale backyards make a big impact at the Parade

Intimate

BY MIKE PRAMIK

Parade of Homes visitors will see an affluence of landscaping features in full bloom this July, including formal gardens, inviting patios and even a terrace garden. Something they won’t see much of, however, are garage doors. New Albany Country Club, where the 2010 BIA of Central Ohio will hold the annual event July 24 to August 8, restricts the viewing of garages, play sets and other symbols of domestic life. So landscapers and homebuilders brainstormed creative ways to keep them from easy view. For instance, Zeppernick Custom Homes created a 30-foot-wide “wall of green” that includes quick-growing arborvitae, to block garage views. “We have four-sided landscaping in New Albany Country Club, and we want some intimacy between the houses even though the lots are tight,” owner Kevin Zeppernick said. Ackerly Park is already a well-landscaped location with proximity to leisure trails, parks and ponds. It’s also near the New Albany village center and within walking distance of schools, entertainment venues and the country club. Most of Ackerly Park’s lots are smaller than half an acre, and the development adheres to a New Albany tradition: Georgian architecture. Mark Granche, with Landmarc Gardens, said this year’s Parade landscaping will be more compact and heavily planted to accommodate a “village vibe.” When designing the landscape plan for the M/I Homes entry, Granche provided 20

screening not only for garages but also driveways, play sets and air conditioning units. Pete Pavlik with Oakland Nursery is the landscaper for the Bob Webb Homes Parade house. He said a minimalist approach could work best for some landscapers this year. “No imported statues and urns from Italy and France,” he said. “It will look good and traditional.” That’s not to say there won’t be some eye-popping landscape treatments. Built for his family, Zeppernick’s house features a private terrace extending from the master bedroom. The vanity is set in front of a large picture window with attached vanity mirrors. The “green” balcony will boast an assortment of colorful flowers, vines, and shrubbery. “The picture window floods the master bathroom with light coming in from the private balcony and truly marries the outside with the inside,” Zeppernick said.

BIA PARADE OF HOMES 2010 | THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Some landscapers said the smaller lots dictated some of the design, which made function over form a priority. Anthony Cihla, with Wilson Landscape Associates, said the Tuckerman Home Group Parade house includes herb plantings in a formal garden area near the kitchen. The site has an apple espalier, handcrafted clay pavers and a small reflecting pool. “The idea was to have the herbs readily accessible to the kitchen area; the space to be somewhat private but not completely inaccessible, visually, from street level; and to inspire a healthy lifestyle,” Cihla said. M/I’s entry will have a formal entertaining area in the rear of the house. It includes a patio with a brick terrace that features a seating wall capped with limestone. “The rear extension has the opportunity to become a ‘green room,’ which allows added space for entertainment,” Granche said.

BY MELISSA KOSSLER DUTTON

Having the whole family under one roof isn’t enough for today’s busy parents. They want their children nearby while they do homework, play games or watch television. To help them keep their brood close, parents are designing homes that emphasize togetherness. Several of the eight homes featured in the 2010 BIA Parade of Homes focus on first-floor living. Architects have designed homes with amenities such as a pub, exercise room and library on the first floor so families can take care of different tasks while remaining on

first the same level. Builder Kevin Zeppernick, who intends to live in his Parade home, designed the house so he and his wife can have parties and keep guests together. The first floor includes a pub, where friends and family can gather to watch a game, Zeppernick said. A stacked-stone wall with recessed shelves for

designed the house to integrate the formal dining room into their daily living space. “If we’re microwaving a Lean Cuisine, we’re taking it in there and eating it,” he said.

candles creates a dramatic backdrop for revelers. Zeppernick included the pub on the main floor of his home to allow easy access to the kitchen. At his current residence, parties often end up divided when some guests head to the basement to watch television while others linger in the kitchen visiting, he said. “We made a conscious decision to put everything on the first floor,” Zeppernick said. “The focus is around the great room.” By utilizing the first-floor great room as an entertaining hub, the couple also gains access to the outside patio, which they intend to use as additional living space. Since the kitchen does not have a dining area, the couple also

Many homebuyers grapple with what to do regarding a formal dining room, said architect Dan Keiser of Keiser Design Group in Gahanna. Keiser designed the five-bedroom, Georgian-style Parade home built by Weaver Custom Homes of Wooster, Ohio. He did not include a formal dining room in the 5,300-square-foot house because he believes families are looking for more living space in the rooms they use on a daily basis. Instead, he made the kitchen area large enough to accommodate extended family and friends during the holidays or on special occasions. “There’s very much a big move to having flexibility in the floor plan – not having a series of smaller rooms,” Keiser said. “We want to maximize space in the house and not have frivolous rooms.” The Weaver house also features a spot for doing homework and a small den for other quiet activities. The focus is on allowing the family to be in connected space regardless of what they are doing, he said. “It’s just the way people live,” he said. “Families want to be together.” The kitchen fireplace in the New England Homes Parade house creates a cozy spot for conversation or reading while meals are being prepared, said Doug Annette, a partner in the Lewis Center homebuilding community. The two-sided fireplace also anchors the great room, which features barn tresses that contribute to the home’s traditional American look. The house also utilizes the outdoors as additional entertaining space, he said. Three doors lead to a backyard that features an outdoor kitchen and fire pit. When designing a home, Annette encourages customers to consider access to the outdoors – something that can’t be done from most basements. “If you have a walk-out lot, it’s a no-brainer to do a finished basement,” he said. “If you do not have a walk-out, it makes much more sense to spend a lot of that money on your outdoor living.”

In the Tuckerman Home Group’s Parade house, family members can exercise, play the grand piano or hang out around a game table on the first floor. The house includes a first-floor gym, library and a spacious great room with lots of entertainment options, said interior designer Michael McKibben of Michael McKibben Interiors in Columbus. People are looking to the main floor of their homes to accommodate a number of activities, he added. “(Families) want this to be an all encompassing area,” he said. “Kids can be there and be comfortable.” Kid-friendly furniture and fabrics in taupe, green, yellow and apricot make the space warm and inviting, he said. It also lends a more casual feel to the home. A house is “for living,” McKibben said. It should be designed so “people can live in the rooms.”
