Smart Columbus: Oh, the places we’ll go Wheels turning as future of transportation unfolds in Columbus BY DENISE BLOUGH DISPATCH MEDIA GROUP In small government offices and crowded boardrooms, the future of urban transportation is transpiring right here in Columbus — the U.S. Department of Transportation’s first Smart City. The wheels started turning for Smart Columbus last summer, when the city won the USDOT’s Smart City challenge over cities such as Austin, Portland and San Francisco. The roughly $415-million venture, supported by federal and private funds, has several focus areas, including transportation access, smart logistics and sustainable transportation. From real-time traffic/parking data to charging stations for electric cars to driverless shuttles around Easton, the city hopes to become a model for communities around the nation, said Brandi Braun, assistant director for the Columbus Department of Public Service. “How people want to move — and the way people should move — is changing, and the Smart Columbus grants are allowing us to prepare for that future,” Braun said, adding that the city’s initial proposals to the USDOT must be implemented by 2020. The movement aims to both attract new jobs and sectors to the city as well as provide better access to existing ones, Braun said. For example, six autonomous vehicles will make routes within Easton Town Center “to address first- and last-mile challenges in one of the city’s largest job centers” by dropping individuals off directly in front of where they work, according to the city. Another issue that Smart Columbus hopes to address is the lack of mobil-

ity in communities like Linden. “Mobility options are not equitable — not everyone lives within walking distance of their nearest bus stop; not everyone can afford a car,” Braun said. “The one-car-one-person model doesn’t work for everyone.” If there were better access to transportation, more people could be empowered to connect themselves to jobs, education, health care and more. This is the thought behind the bus rapid transit — a transit system designed to be more efficient than a traditional bus service but less pricey than a light rail or metro system — that COTA will implement along a 15.6-mile stretch of Cleveland Avenue between downtown and Polaris Parkway, said Marty Stutz, vice president of communications, marketing and customer service at COTA. The new transit line, called CMAX, will operate in mixed traffic along with regular COTA service, but trafficsignal priority technology will allow CMAX buses that are behind schedule to shorten the length of a red light or keep a light green longer, Stutz said. CMAX was in the works well before the Smart City grant was announced, but because it will serve transitdependent areas like Linden the project became “a great platform to collaborate with Smart Columbus,” said COTA spokeswoman Lisa Myers, adding that CMAX is on track to launch in January 2018. COTA is also working with Smart Columbus on designing a smart pass payment system that would work for COTA buses, car2go cars, CoGo bikes, taxis, Uber, Lyft and others, Stutz said. This would allow those without access to smart phones or bank accounts to use services like Uber by loading the smart pass with cash at a neighborhood kiosk.

IMAGE: COURTESY COTA CMAX will operate in mixed traffic along with regular COTA service, but traffic-signal priority technology will allow CMAX buses that are behind schedule to shorten the length of a red light or keep a light green longer.

The other challenge facing Columbus is traffic and parking congestion — an issue that will certainly need to be addressed if the Mid Ohio Regional Planning Commission’s population-increase estimate of 1 million new residents by 2050 holds true. “Neighborhoods that are crowded with people and cars can suffer because it’s too difficult for people to come visit, shop or even live in a community where parking is tight,” Stutz said. “The more options you provide to people, the more opportunities they have to enjoy your town.” The solution here is to provide real-time parking, traffic and event information through an information portal so people can find available parking before they travel, Braun said. The system could also aid commercial truck drivers making deliveries in the downtown area by allowing them to

schedule routes and deliveries when traffic and space are optimal. Smart Columbus also aims to incorporate more electric vehicles into public and private fleets, encourage electric vehicle adoption by installing charging stations across the city and more, Braun said. Along with furthering mobility and sustainability goals, COTA believes that increased use of alternate and public transportation will make Columbus more appealing in general. “When people are outside of their cars walking, riding a bike or using transit — that’s the kind of sidewalk activity that energizes neighborhoods and makes communities more attractive,” Stutz said. Although there’s a ways to go, Smart Columbus “really has the ability to transform the lives of our residents,” Braun said.

There’s no navigating without technology Tech takes the driver’s seat in logistics management BY DENISE BLOUGH DISPATCH MEDIA GROUP Behind Amazon’s daily ability to fulfill millions of online shoppers’ instant-gratification needs is some seriously precise logistics mastery. Logistics is the art and science of “obtaining, producing and distributing material and product in the proper place and in proper quantities,” as defined by the American Production and Inventory Control Society. These are no easy tasks, which is why logistics management requires large-scale supply-chain operations involving multiple entities, facilities, processes and systems. And you can’t forget technology. That’s right — without current technology and the logistics models to match it, that new iPad Jerry in Arizona just ordered for same-day shipping on Amazon wouldn’t get there in time for his son’s birthday party, and that brand-new Nintendo game wouldn’t have made it from the screen of Walmart.com to the door steps of hundreds of children whose parents pre-ordered it for release-date delivery. The following are just a handful of the tech that’s used in logistics management on a daily basis: • Warehouse management systems • Radio frequency identification • Production scheduling systems

pride

• • • •

Knowledge management Collaboration software Inventory management systems Routing and delivery scheduling systems, and • GPS These ever-advancing technologies coupled with the increasing shift to e-commerce have all but reshaped the logistics industry, said Michael Ferrando, training and recruiting manager at ODW Logistics, a Columbusbased third-party logistics provider that specializes in warehousing, transportation and operations. This is because trucks are delivering merchandise from multiple stores to multiple places, instead of delivering one truckload to one store, meaning “you have to be much more efficient” in tracking mileage and how you’re managing your drivers, Ferrando said. It’s up to logisticians and supplychain experts to figure out which technology, routes and delivery methods will minimize costs and time to a company — an equation that has many moving parts (both literal and figurative). Processes such as packaging, insurance, importing and exporting regulations, freight-damage claims and managing vendors and partners also come into play. But it all comes down to “communication and being timely to get things where they need to be,” Ferrando said. “People want their stuff

when it says it’s going to be there.” Not just anyone can perform these roles, which is why a bachelor’s degree is typically required. The median logistician salary is $74,260, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. In logistics you get to work on issues that are real-world versus theoretical in nature, said Fab Brasca, director of global transportation and distribution for i2, a supply-chain software company. Due to a growing global market, logistics and supplychain professionals often travel and interact with professionals in a variety of different companies and cultures. Like other industries, techies with business acumen are in demand. Typically a successful IT associate in logistics has a command of how the different logistics business models work and how they are successfully managed with data automation. Evolving technologies such as truck platooning, autonomous driving and drone delivery could change the entire landscape of logistics and supply-chain management, said Brad Hunt, recruiting and safety manager at Columbus-based FST Logistics. Many trucks are already installed

with dashboard-mounted computers and cameras, lane-departure correction and brake assist, among other features, but full autonomous driving is still a ways down the road, Hunt said. Overall, companies that can successfully navigate and utilize the everchanging scope of technologies and information systems in logistics and supply-chain-management operations while fulfilling customer needs will be at an advantage, Ferrando said. 6 careers in transportation and logistics There are plenty of career opportunities to explore within the vast and diverse industries of transportation and logistics. While some careers in this sector may be a bit harder to attain, such as an airfield operations specialist or ship engineer, many others are in demand and just a few classes or certifications away. The following are just a small fraction of these jobs:

TRANSPORTATION Truck driver — $41,420 median salary Roughly 1.7 million truck drivers were employed in the U.S. as of May 2016, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Ohio has one of the highest truckdriver employment levels in the nation, perhaps because central Ohio is within a 10-hour drive of 47 percent of the U.S. population and manufacturing operations facilities, according to Columbus 2020, a nonprofit, economic-growth organization for the region. That being said, there is still a need for more truck drivers, said Michael Ferrando, training and recruiting manager at ODW Logistics, a Columbusbased, third-party logistics company. “Over the next 10 years, we’ll need almost 900,000 drivers in America, and there is a 47,000 driver short-

age right now,” Ferrando said. One obstacle is finding enough people who are qualified. Truck drivers must have a commercial driver’s license (CDL), which is usually acquired through a severalmonth-long professional truck driving school. Once hired, drivers receive onthe-job training. The Ohio Department of Transportation also requires truck drivers to obtain a medical card from a government-approved physician to confirm that the individual is fit to drive a commercial vehicle. And as technology becomes more integrated with truck driving — all of the trucks used by ODW Logistics have touch-screen computers used for directions, logging, invoice tracking and billing — it’s imperative for drivers to be good with computers, Ferrando said. To make truck-driving positions more attractive, companies often offer sign-on bonuses, higher salaries and opportunities to be home every night, said Brad Hunt, recruiting and safety manager at Columbus-based FST Logistics. Bus driver — $39,790 median salary For those wary of operating an 80,000-pound semi truck across the nation’s busy highways but still interested in making a degree-level salary without a college education, public bus driving could be the answer.

Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA), for instance, pays its starting bus operators $17.50 an hour plus benefits, said Lisa Myers, public and media relations manager at COTA. To be considered for the full-time job you must be 21, have a valid drivers license and go through an eightweek training program, during which pay is $13 an hour, Myers said. “We really look for someone with customer-service experience, because about 90 percent of your job, besides driving a bus and knowing your route, is greeting people and helping them find their way,” she added. Diesel service technician/truck mechanic — $45,644 median salary Individuals in this role manage diesel equipment operation by completing inspections and preventive maintenance, diagnosing and correcting vehicle deficiencies and making adjustments and alignments. Typically a high school diploma and relevant technical certification and training is required.

LOGISTICS Dispatcher — $41,732 median salary Dispatchers deliver items to customers by verifying orders, performing stock inventory and arranging transportation. They need strong communication and customer-service skills, and must be able to work closely and effectively with other employees at

the company. A minimum of a high school diploma is required. Logistics/process engineer — $74,280 median salary At larger companies, logistics and process engineers may look at a wide variety of data to make the operation more efficient. Some of the data may include revenue per stop, on-time percentages and ways to optimize routes, delivery schedules and fuel use. They may also develop ways to track this data efficiently and ensure compliance with local, state and federal rules. To fill this role most companies are looking for a bachelor’s in supply-chain management or process engineering. These fields of study will teach you things such as system dynamics, decision-making and database management. Account Executive — $68,770 median salary Salespeople at logistics firms are responsible for working with customers across a variety of industries and geographical regions to provide supply-chain solutions that bring value and improvements to their businesses.
