The Asian Festival of Columbus
The Asian Festival of Columbus prepares to enter its 23rd consecutive year of showcasing rich and inspiring Asian culture for the greater Columbus area Memorial Day weekend, May 27th and 28th. But what many locals do not know is the history of its origin and the legacy that continues today. In the early 90’s the Asian Festival’s president, Dr. Yung-Chen Lu, recognized a need for improved healthcare for Asian Americans in the greater Columbus area. After gathering business leaders and medical professionals together to brainstorm the degree of need and solutions, momentum began taking over that would lead to the birth of America’s largest annual Asian Festival here in Columbus. A partnership with Asian-Americans and other community groups was formed with major funding provided by the Ohio Commission on Minority Health, many other health care agencies and hospitals. A two-fold vision developed to promote Asian culture and provide free health screenings for those in need. Those health screenings have expanded to a variety of trending health concerns among Americans today including cholesterol, A1C, diabetes, blood pressure, cardiovascular and mental health assessments.
