This fall, I did something I hadn’t done in more than three years: I attended two weddings in the same month. I can count on one hand the number of weddings I’ve been to since the start of the pandemic; it’s a stark difference from the Before Times, when I often attended that many or more in a single season. (My husband and I come from large, tightknit families, and we saw much of our friend group get married between 2012 and 2019.)
But at our two weddings this October, I began to get a sense of normalcy for the first time since everything fell apart in early 2020. The guest lists weren’t slashed to ensure social distancing; masks were optional and relatively scarce. I ate, drank, danced, socialized and celebrated in much the same way I had prepandemic, but with a newfound appreciation for all that I’d missed in that time.
It’s not surprising that our social calendar included back-to-back nuptials: For more than a year, industry experts predicted that 2022 would have the most weddings in nearly 30 years, thanks to pandemic-era postponements and new proposals. If the record-setting number of submissions we received for this issue—more than 80!—is any indication, that prediction certainly came true.
While things may be slowing down for 2023, we’re sure the year will see no shortage of Central Ohio weddings taking place. That’s why we’re here: to give you all the tools, tips and tricks
to plan your perfect day. In these pages, you’ll find everything from inspiration for alternatives to guest books (Page 26) to practical advice on how to change your name after the wedding, especially if both partners are making a change (Page 22), to the latest trend in displaying that newly shared last name (Page 12).
There’s also a styled photo shoot featuring one of the region’s newest venues (Page 28), and of course our Real Weddings section starting on Page 35, with in-depth looks at seven local weddings. And, as always, our listings of venues and other vendors after the Real Weddings section offer plenty of resources to get that planning to-do list done.

Morgan Taylor and Seth Miller popped a bottle of bubbly during their first look at Crockett’s Run on July 9, 2022. Morgan says the moment was among the most memorable of her wedding day.
The latest lighting and décor trend will brighten your day and light up the night.
In 2022, we saw a rise in couples using neon or LED lights to spell out their newly shared last name or a cute phrase. The personalized version of this wedding décor item is popular for a reason—it makes for great home décor after the big day—but there's a new light in town. Marquee letters, oversized and lined with bulbs, are shaping up to be the Next Big Thing. Their size means you’ll want to rent the pieces, especially if you want to spell out a long name, word or phrase. Pro tip: Pair with an open-air-style photo booth for the ultimate backdrop! —Emma Frankart Henterly
After combining their maiden names to create a last name (more on Page 22), Tyler (left in inset photo) and Allie Corsetti honored the moniker with a neon sign and marquee letters rented from BurgundyGinger Events for their Aug. 7, 2022, wedding at Vue Columbus. Ericka Greene Events helped with planning and design.
Allyson and Thomas Cromleigh saw their name in lights during their reception at Retreat 21 on July 9, 2022. They rented the letters from Alpha-Lit Columbus, a local franchise of national brand Alpha-Lit Marquee Letters.
A simple declaration of “love” fit perfectly for Amber and Aaron Kienzle, who married at Magnolia Hill Farm on May 28, 2022. They displayed their letters, also rented from Alpha-Lit Columbus, in the venue's courtyard.
Cleveland-based DJ company Lo-Key Entertainment pulled out all the stops for Emilio Amigo (left in inset photo) and Doug Smith's May 15, 2022, wedding at the Fives. In addition to marquee letters, the company provided indoor fireworks and a fog machine for the dance floor.

Immediately after their June 3, 2022, ceremony at Nationwide Hotel and Conference Center, Reilly and Kory Gardner took a moment alone to pray together over their marriage and pop a bottle of bubbly in celebration.
When it comes to the wedding gown, sometimes tradition trumps topical.
BY PETER TONGUETTENanette Taylor couldn’t believe her eyes. Standing before her was her daughter, Morgan Taylor, on her wedding day, wearing Nanette’s own wedding gown that was purchased at some point during, well, the Reagan administration.
For her own wedding last July to Seth Miller, Morgan chose to wear (and ever-so-slightly alter) the gown worn by Nanette for her 1986 wedding to Morgan’s father, William Taylor—and not tell anyone about it.
Before the big reveal, Nanette was chatting with Morgan’s bridesmaids about her wedding way back when.
“She was just telling really fun stories about her hair and all of that,” remembers Morgan. “I walked in, and she screamed, and then she immediately started crying. It’s so, so, so sweet.”
Nanette asked her daughter whether she really wanted to wear this hand-me-down gown. That one was easy to answer: “I was like, ‘Yes, of course,’” Morgan says.
She is among numerous Central Ohio brides who have chosen to make fresh use of gowns that have been passed down through the generations.
In the case of the Taylor family’s gown, Morgan had already purchased a new dress from La Jeune Mariee when her mother suggested she cut a piece from her own immaculately preserved gown or otherwise modify it for a reception or other event. When Morgan tried it on, though, she knew she had to wear it for the wedding itself.
“It’s off-the-shoulder, totally ruffle-y—it’s totally ’80s,” Morgan says. “I tried on the dress, and I loved it as is. … I was like, ‘I really don’t want to touch it.’ But I kind of let her believe that, ‘Oh yeah, I think I’ll make a top and maybe a pants out of it, wear it for the rehearsal dinner or something.’”
Instead, Morgan had her mom’s dress taken in slightly—“I’m 5’7”, and she’s 5’10,” and we were the same size,” Morgan says—and wore it at the wedding; she saved her new dress, sleeker and simpler than her mom’s, for the reception.
“I loved the idea of being able to wear something really clean for photos and my reception, but then something really over-the-top, really fun, for our ceremony,” Morgan says.
The history of the gown worn by Mary (Miehls) Wright is even lengthier.
Mary—who has been legally married to her husband, William Wright, for six years but only found time to have a ceremony and reception last September—grew up with an awareness of the gown worn by her mother, Wendy (Semans) Miehls, for her wedding in 1983, and her maternal grandmother, Mary Jane (Quayle) Semans, for her wedding in 1950. Its lineage may go back even further.
“We’re not sure if my great-grandmother would have worn it,” Mary says. “But we’re thinking, at the very least, that she would have purchased it for my grandmother.”
Whenever Mary contemplated her own long-deferred wedding, she knew she wanted to wear the gown but didn’t think it was a realistic possibility.
“Honestly, I would have always considered it,” Mary says. “But I was never as thin
as my mom. My mom and my grandmother were very, very tiny and petite. I didn’t even think that it would fit me at all.”
Then came a time of challenge that turned out to have a silver lining.
“When my third daughter was born, I literally lost so much weight because I was very, very sick with the pregnancy,” Mary says. “I was able to fit into the dress [after], and it was like such a dream come true.”
The dress has a long train, as well as a bodice made of Chantilly lace and silk.
“It reminds me a lot of the royal wedding gowns,” she says.
Because the gown was well-preserved, just a bit of work was needed to make it wearable again.
“We had it altered a little bit to reinforce some of the sides and the sleeves, because the sleeves were the most thin and delicate,” says Mary. She adds that testing on the gown by a preservationist at Dublin Cleaners revealed that the gown was old enough to have been worn prior to her grandmother.
Although there was some aging evident in portions of the fabric, the dress itself was already a creamy ivory color.
“It looked just like the [vintage] photos,” Mary says.
In part to preserve the gown, Mary wore a new dress, purchased from La Jeune Mariee, for the reception.
Her eldest daughter, who is 13, was able to fully appreciate her parents’ wedding— and has some ideas about what she might wear one day.
“My eldest is like, ‘I want to wear that, too,’” Mary says. “So I’m hoping that she’ll be able to wear it.” «
Let’s say you already have a vintage or heirloom wedding gown. What next?
If a gown shows signs of yellowing, it’s imperative to restore the garment before making alterations, says Margaret Butler, co-owner of and wedding preservation specialist at Dublin Cleaners.
After the gown has been restored to its former luster, alterations can take place.
Preserved or restored gowns from the 1940s through ’60s can be safely worn down the aisle, but may not hold up over a night of activity. “[They’re] not a good choice when everybody is hugging you and you’re dancing,” says Butler, who suggests buying a new gown for receptions and similar events, like showers and rehearsal dinners.
“The lace on some of those really older gowns is very, very fragile.”
Even if your gown is new, be sure to have it professionally cleaned after the wedding to remove visible dirt as well as invisible culprits, such as perspiration and any remnants of perfume or Champagne. “When it goes into a preservation chest, it’s nicely folded and displayed,” Butler says.
“What preserves it is [the fact that] it’s in an archival-quality, museumquality material.” Gowns should never be stored in an attic, crawl space or basement, she adds.
That way, even a new gown can turn into an heirloom in the years to come.
“It’s a suggestion for future brides,” Butler says.
Changing your name after marriage is a big decision, but it doesn’t need to be a complex process—even if you’re taking a nontraditional route.
BY MANDY SHUNNARAHBrangelina, Bennifer and other celebrity name hybrids have graced the covers of tabloids for years. While these likely started as a joke by friends and fans, everyday couples are getting creative with their own last names by merging them in celebration of their marriage.
Before Matt Bartko met Samira Azeez, he’d already changed his name once before: from Assung to Bartko, to honor his stepfather, who raised him.
“I know some guys are really attached to their names, but I never really had that because I adopted it,” Matt says. “When we were talking about it, I asked if she was going to take my name or if she wanted me to take hers. That sparked the conversation of how we don’t have to be married––pun intended––to Bartko.”
Samira always knew she’d change her name when she got married, partly because of tradition
and partly because no one ever seems to spell Azeez correctly.
“We toyed with the idea of Barteez, but that was really complicated. We considered Azko, but it sounded strange and didn’t roll off the tongue. Then we came to Bartez and stuck with it,” Samira says.
Tyler Cordell and Alexandra Bassetti found their perfect portmanteau even as both stood by
the elements they each wanted most out of a last name.
“We were both pretty stubborn,” Allie says. “I didn’t want to lose my last name, Bassetti. I’m an Italian-American woman, and I love having the ‘i’ at the end of my name, so I wasn’t budging on that. Ty loves her last name and loves her initials, TLC, so she didn’t want to lose that. We didn’t want to hyphenate, and we want our kids to have the same last name. … It was a lot.”
By choosing the name Corsetti, they both got to keep the parts of their names that were important to them. They married on Aug. 7, 2022. (See more from their wedding on Page 38.)
“We both got to pick one thing we didn’t want to budge on, and it sounds really simple, but it worked out,” Tyler says.
In addition to the way Corsetti rolls off the tongue, the combining of their last names just made sense.
“It feels like we’re creating a new identity for our new family,” Allie says. “It’s us and it’s a part of our union, and something we’re really proud of.”
Tiffany and Gabriel agree, though they chose a different method of combining their names after marrying on June 4, 2022.
“You’re already combining your families, why not combine your names too?” says Tiffany, née Scheer and now Tiffany Scheer-Scherer. Both names are pronounced the same and are homophones with “shear.”
When she and Gabe (née Scherer) first started dating, Tiffany thought he was joking when he closed out his tab at a bar and gave his last name.
“I was like, ‘I didn’t give you my credit card. What do you mean Scheer?’ He said,
‘That’s my last name.’ What? We have the same last name?” Tiffany says, laughing as she recalls the story. “We’re definitely not related. We checked.”
Going through the formal name-change process for a single letter seemed like a lot of trouble, so the couple came up with a better idea: hyphenate both of their last names.
“It’s like, it’s just one letter and we’re doing all this work. Should I just keep Scheer? But no, I wanted to change it,” Tiffany says.
“We thought it’d be unfair if one person has to go through this process, but the other person doesn’t. That’s the way it is traditionally, but we figured this would be a fun way to add to our relationship,” Gabe adds.
While combining last names can be a rewarding experience, the technical process of changing one’s surname can vary depending on where you live and how quickly documents need to be changed.
The Bartezes were on a happy deadline.
“Because we were expecting, we wanted all of our names to be on our baby’s birth certificate as Bartez, even though we were having her before we were legally married,” Matt says.
This led the couple to change their last names to Bartez through the adult namechange process rather than presenting the marriage certificate as a means of changing one’s name. That process involves a brief meeting with a judge, who ensures the name-changers aren’t criminals trying to evade the law. Once the court order is in hand, you can change your Social Security card and driver’s license.
“It’s a fairly simple process to change your name,” Matt says. “The hard part is everything else: Changing your cell phone, your
utilities, your bank, all that stuff takes a long time. I think if you’re really on top of it, you can change everything in a couple of months.”
The Corsettis had a similar experience.
“They recommended that, because we were creating a name, that one of us should change the name first, then after we got married we could change the other,” Tyler
says. “We could’ve easily done two name changes and just be the Corsettis without the marriage license, but a lot of people change their names because of being married, so if you want that then it makes sense that one of you would have the last name already.”
Tyler and Allie were surprised at how fast the process was, noting that the hearings
for the marriage license and name change were about 10 minutes in total.
The Scheer-Scherers are still in the process of legally hyphenating their last names. New procedures due to COVID have added some challenges to the process.
“You have to send everything in through mail––passport, driver’s license, Social Security card, everything––and it can take months. We’ve got a cruise planned in Janu-
ary where we’re visiting six countries, so we can’t send our passports in yet,” Tiffany says. “Social media is easy, because you can just change your name. At work there was a whole process of requesting to change my name and verifying that Gabe was a real person.” (Tip: If you’re planning international travel immediately after your wedding, book the tickets with your maiden name and wait until after the trip to change your name.)
While the process can vary slightly from county to county, changing one’s name always starts with the Social Security Administration, which tries to make the process as seamless as possible.
“If individuals legally change their name because of marriage, divorce, court order, or any other reason, they must notify us right away to receive a corrected card—and for Social Security to accurately keep track of all earnings for retirement purposes,” says Eric Martinez, deputy regional communications director for the SSA.
There’s no charge for a new Social Security card due to name change, and the process is the same for all genders. The SSA now has a new, much faster way to start the application process online: Individuals who
want to change their name can visit ssa.gov/ ssnumber, where they’ll be asked a series of questions to determine whether they can complete the application process entirely online. Alternatively, they may be able to start the application process online, then bring required documents to their local Social Security office to complete the application, usually in less time than it would take to do the entire process in-person.
For those who need to visit their local SSA office to finish their name changes, Martinez encourages checking the SSA website to determine what types of documents they need to print, and to print and save the number on their online application once the application is complete. From there, they will have 45 days to visit the office to complete the process. Updated cards are mailed seven to 10 business days after the application is complete; from there, updates to driver’s licenses, banking institutions and more can be made.
Though there are a couple of hoops to jump through, couples find that having a last name they chose together is well worth it.
“It was our way of embracing both names and being equal,” Tiffany ScheerScherer says. Hear, hear! «
Cherish the friends and family who shared in your big day with a personal, or even practical, guest book alternative. Here are five creative substitutes to the traditional book and pen.
BY VIRGINIA BROWNWORLD TURNS: Angela and Cam Sabatini
Angela and Cam met in January 2018 through a dating app but learned on their first date that they worked for the same company. The couple tied the knot on Aug. 20, 2022, at Holy Cross Catholic Church, with a reception at the Athletic Club of Columbus.
GUEST BOOK ALTERNATIVE: Globe
“We liked the idea of something that could be on display,” Angela says. “We see it every day, as a decoration in our home.” After finding the idea on Pinterest, Angela turned to Etsy shop ConsiderTheWorld to source the globe. “It was the first item we bought for our wedding day,” she says. “We have it staged in our gold-accented dining room on a bar cart and love to see it every time we are in there,” she says.
When Taylor met Zach at a sorority formal in 2014, she fell fast. “I called my mom the next day and told her I was going to marry him,” she says. That prediction came true July 30, 2021, at Trinity United Methodist Church, with a reception at Vue Columbus.
For their guest book, the couple chose a Jenga game and asked everyone to write something, preferably more than just their name. “We wanted something unique and an item that we would use a lot in the future,” Taylor says. Today, they keep the game, sourced from Amazon, on top of their other board games. For other couples looking to go this route, Taylor has one bit of advice: Use an Ultra Fine Point Sharpie. “We thought the markers were fine-tip, but the ink size was bigger than we would have liked,” she says.
Sarah and Robert became friends in high school, started dating in April 2013 and had their first date at their high school prom. On June 25, 2022, they married at First Presbyterian Church of Granville, and fittingly, held their reception at the same venue as their first date: Bryn Du Mansion.
“The completed puzzle, made of many smaller pieces, is a fun physical representation of how our wedding included loved ones from all parts of our lives as a couple and as individuals,” Sarah says. They got the idea from their friends’ wedding and found their puzzle, now displayed over their fireplace, from Etsy shop Lasaris. Sarah suggests having a few people sign pieces before the reception, to serve as an example. Also, since guests tended to use one piece per couple or family, she says, order based on the number of parties attending instead of the number of individuals.
Three years ago, Faith met David at their sons’ soccer game (both played on the same team). They got married and hosted their reception on April 22, 2022, at North Bank Park Pavilion.
“I wanted to create a live experience that guests could enjoy watching,” Faith says, “while also celebrating a local graffiti artist.” The artist was Christopher Etch Weyrich, whom Faith knew from her work in experiential activation design for brands, and the artwork was a 4-foot-by-5-foot canvas. She supplied Weyrich with a final guest list to start painting as guests arrived. “The completed canvas took about an hour to complete,” she says, “perfect for cocktail hour.” Today the art is displayed on a wall in their home. If going this route, “coordinate the overall color and style with your wedding theme, but don’t forget to coordinate with your home, where you intend to hang the art piece,” Faith says.
Miranda and Emily met on the Her dating app in September 2018. On Sept. 17, 2022, they married and held a reception at Everal Barn and Homestead in Westerville with 75 guests. “The whole day was magical,” magical,” says Miranda (at right in the photo above). “Every single moment was memorable and beautiful.”
“We love to travel and experience new places and things together,” Miranda says. “It made more sense to do something nontraditional, since we are anything but traditional, and we are artists at heart.” They saw the idea on Etsy and replicated it by coffee-dyeing cardstock and tying it with twine. They then used Emily’s mother’s vintage suitcase as a vessel. “Try to be as purposeful and intentional as possible,” Miranda says. “We poured ourselves into every facet of our wedding. Put your own twist on it, and make it special.”
This new venue pairs a secluded resort vibe with the convenience of a Central Ohio address.
PHOTOS BY ANNIE DARR PHOTOGRAPHYSelf-described as an immersive outdoor oasis, Retreat 21—the latest venture from Vue Columbus owners Liz and Carl Seiley—opened in 2022 amid 60-plus acres of trees and meadows. For photographer Annie Darr and planner Dana Watts of Thyme & Details, the new property was the perfect site to host a photo shoot. “I came to Dana with this idea [of] a summery and bright styled shoot with lots of life and color,” Darr says. “We were inspired by colorful florals and citrus, so we were more than thrilled when SunflowerKate Florals and Boards by Brooke could take our vision of color and deliver beautiful floral pieces and a grazing table.” The team aimed to use as many of Retreat 21’s on-site amenities and spaces as possible, Watts adds, including the event space itself, the adjacent courtyard, the natural swimming pond, the prairie area and more. —Emma Frankart Henterly
The wooded property is perfect for an intimate ceremony, or couples can opt to wed next to the natural pond with a relaxing waterfall in the background.
“The design concept was centered around highlighting the venue [and] season, communicating the experience options at a brand-new, unique, local venue,” Watts says.
“The bride and groom models are a real, newly married couple,” Watts notes, adding that the bride is herself a photographer, “so it was a fun, creative experience for everyone.” Darr reached out with a model request “because they looked to be so in love,” she says.

“We were also excited to try some trendy things—a Champagne tower, 3D texture on the cake, matching macarons with the invites—small details that Dana really pulled together, along with the vendors, to make our vision come to life,” Darr says.
The bell tent setup pictured above is one such detail—a nod to the glamping opportunity available in addition to the property’s eight traditional cabins, most of which are tucked into the wooded area behind the venue.
Morgan and James Jeter hope their love story (Page 40) inspires others. The end of their first marriages “led us to where we are today,” Morgan says. “We want to be a reminder that true, honest, stable, strong love does exist, at any age, any situation, any timing—it will prevail, if you work for it.”

Cassie (Lamprinakos) and Blake Collins knew of each other for years through friends, but it wasn’t until 2018, at a bar during an Ohio State University football game, that their relationship sparked.
After two years of dating, the couple decided to build a house together. Members of both of their families joined them the day after Thanksgiving to visit their futurehome lot—or so Cassie thought.
“We were pretending to go look at the lot with the family, and we surprised her and I proposed,” Blake says.
The big event came on May 14, 2022, with 200 family members and friends—some from as far as Texas, California, Florida and Georgia—celebrating at Magnolia Hill Farm. Hints of sage, gold and dusty purple filled the venue, which Cassie and her mother decorated. “I’m a creative person, and Magnolia Hill was just such a clean slate,” Cassie says. “There’s so much you can do with it; you can make it whatever you want.”
Cassie’s younger brother, Nicholas, officiated. “He and Blake had gotten close, and we wanted someone we’d be comfortable with,” Cassie says.
Since comfort was key on their big day, the couple exchanged private vows via letter before the ceremony.
“I knew if we had to stand up there and do vows, we would get emotional,” Cassie says. “We read them separately, but a videographer recorded us reading them in the same spot.”
When he thinks back to the most memorable part of the day, Blake reflects on Cassie walking down the aisle. “I felt like time was flying,” he says. “We had 22 people in our wedding [party], so you’d think it would have taken forever, but it went by in a snap.”
For the reception, the couple brought in touches from Cassie’s family’s native Greece—where the newlyweds decided to honeymoon, as well—for the menu: gyros, spanakopita, hummus and feta dip. A funny moment came when multiple people told Cassie and Blake they had to cut the wedding cake or, due to the heat that day, it might melt. “There’s a picture of us cutting it, and I'm looking at the cake, because I think it looks like it’s going to fall,” Cassie says. “The cake still tasted great, but we got it done as fast as we could.”
All in all, the couple agrees that their wedding day was flawless. “It was surreal to have all of our people in one room,” Cassie says. “It was overwhelming in the best possible way.” «

By the time Tyler Cordell, an only child, was born, her mother had already been planning her wedding for two years. So when she married Alexandra Bassetti (on the right in the photo on this page) 30-some years later––and the pair combined their last names to become the Corsettis––Tyler’s mom made sure it was a day they’d never forget.
She surprised the couple with a frozen margarita machine and an ice cream truck, and didn’t stop there, hiring drag queens to deliver a reception surprise.
“We see these tall women in the corner, and they’re holding serving trays,” Tyler says. “We love themed brunches, and our favorite is drag brunch. These four beautiful queens come out stomping to the beat of the music, and they’re serving these adult happy meals. It had this card that said, ‘Dance break provided by Grandma Sharon,’ my grandmother, ‘and Grandma Susan,’ Allie’s grandmother.”
Another surprise felt downright miraculous: Tyler’s mom hired a singing quartet to perform at the reception, held on one of the hottest days in August. As they sang Sunday Service Choir’s “Rain,” specifically the line “Lord, rain down on me,” it started sprinkling.
“It was the softest sprinkling of water, just enough to cool everybody down, and when they stopped singing, so did the rain,” Tyler says. “We both still get chills talking about this moment.”
Both Corsettis are basketball coaches at Columbia University, though they opted to marry in Columbus after creating beautiful memories here during the pandemic.
“We wanted to get out of New York, since our jobs were on pause. We went for what we thought would be two weeks in Columbus, and it ended up being five months,” Allie says.
Throughout the weekend of celebrating, the Corsettis incorporated many of their favorite local brands, including wings from Roosters and pizza from Donatos.
“We celebrated who we became during the pandemic. We got into gardening and had a succulent garden in Columbus,” Tyler says. “The customized succulents [we gave as favors] were all different shapes and shades, and each person’s had a name tag. We wanted people to have something they’d actually use and enjoy.”
All the details came together to give the Corsettis exactly what they hoped for: an unforgettable day with a vibe like Frank Sinatra met Frank Ocean and threw a party. «
Morgan (Salisbury) and James Jeter’s love story began where they both least expected: at work.
Both in the car business, Morgan visited the dealership where James worked to lead a training. Although they lived two hours apart at the time, with Morgan in Columbus and James in Canton, and knowing they’d have to keep their relationship a secret from their employers, they were determined to make it work.
“We told nobody,” Morgan says. “It was scandalous in our brains, but nobody knew.”
Years later, Morgan and James celebrated their love with their wedding guests, many of whom were coworkers they once hid their relationship from. Surrounded by palm leaves and other greenery, guests danced and chatted the night away. In fact, guests were having such a good time, they forgot that the Jeters hadn’t been announced at their reception.
“One of my favorite parts is that we were getting ready to do our grand entrance, and one of the girls who works at the venue said, ‘Hey, the DJ has tried to get everyone to sit down and no one is sitting, and you guys can’t come in until they do,’” Morgan says.
“I went to each pod of people and told them that they had to sit, because we couldn’t come eat,” James adds.
When the Jeters finally made their entrance, they did so under a structure of black-painted PVC pipe and hanging lights, which they made themselves. Morgan had a vision for what she wanted, so the couple spent hours shopping at Home Depot and building pieces in their backyard.
“We wanted to have a structure over the entire dance floor with hanging lanterns,” Morgan says. “We built it four times, and it fell down four times. I gave up, but James made it happen.”
Construction wasn’t the only skill the Jeters acquired in the months leading up to their big day.
“We were going for tropical-chic,” Morgan says. “We didn’t want any flowers, only greenery. We’d never kept a plant alive, but we decided to buy 30 and learned how to take care of plants during that process.”
Long tables replaced rounds at the reception, to make everyone feel like one big family—perfect for the couple now passionate about inspiring others with their love.
“James and I were both married previously to people who weren’t right for us,” Morgan says. “I think society makes you believe that you find your soulmate in your 20s. We’re 34, and we now know love is possible. I hope other people don’t give up on that.” «

Credit Bosco Sticks—cheese-stuffed breadsticks from a dive bar—for building the foundation of Sama Sabihi and Owen Daugherty’s romance: The pair met while sitting next to each other at Oldfield’s North Fourth Tavern. “I’m not a drinker, but they just have the best snacks,” Sama says.
Things got serious fast, and in 2018, the couple relocated to Washington, D.C., for Sama's graduate program. In 2021, Owen proposed, Sama said yes, and their work to plan a wedding from afar began. The resulting event incorporated Sama’s and Owen’s religious traditions (Persian/Baha’i and Christian, respectively) and other personal touches.
Owen’s friends played music for the processional, and the wedding program was designed as a newspaper, reflecting his career in journalism.
Baha’i weddings only require that the couple exchange a brief vow. To that, Sama and Owen added a reading from the Bible, a prayer in Farsi, chanting by Sama’s grandmother and readings from the works of bell hooks and 13th-century Persian poet Rumi, as well as vows they wrote themselves. Persian elements included the incorporation of sofreh aghd (a table with items representing the couple’s life together and marriage) and a ceremony in which Sama’s sisters sprinkled sugar on the couple to symbolically sweeten the marriage.
Sama’s brother designed a poster for guests to sign. A friend gave them dance lessons; another did Sama’s hair and makeup. Both their mothers helped with dessert. “It was important to us to have our loved ones be a part of the wedding,” Sama says.
The couple’s first dance was to “Find Someone Like You” by Swedish-born, Persian singer Snoh Aalegra; wedding favors came from Calabash Tea in D.C., which created a custom blend and packaging with a QR code linked to a playlist of the couple’s favorite songs. Kuro Neko Cake Studio created a cake with roses and pistachios as a nod to the traditional Persian Love Cake; the cake also served as the center of a Persian “knife dance.”
Owen’s advice to other couples when wedding planning? Trust your gut. “Stay true to what you like,” he says. “It’s really easy to get inundated with ideas. We knew what we were about, what we wanted.”«

Kim Nguyen-Halter and Jacob Halter almost didn’t have a first date, but destiny led them to have three weddings.
The couple, who originally met at a gym, were to have their first date playing disc golf at Griggs Reservoir in Northwest Columbus. But after circling parking lots for what seemed like hours, they still couldn’t locate each other. “I was impatient and getting angry,” Kim says. “I was just about to leave. I figured it wasn’t meant to be— and then Jacob pulled up. His smile was so contagious.”
The date that almost didn’t happen lasted six hours; nearly six years later, in 2020, Jacob proposed to Kim during a private tour at The Wilds in Muskingum County, one of their favorite destinations. “I wanted it to be private, so I booked the whole vehicle,” Jacob says.
Because their visit happened during COVID, Kim wasn’t suspicious that they had the whole bus to themselves. Jacob popped the question when they were stopped near Kim’s beloved giraffes, and in another stroke of good fortune, Kim’s favorite giraffe approached them. “Everything aligned perfectly,” Jacob says.
COVID altered their original wedding plans, so the couple eloped in 2021 at a cabin in the Hocking Hills, exchanging vows under an arch made by a friend. Two
more weddings followed in 2022: a traditional Vietnamese ceremony held at a New Albany apartment complex clubhouse on March 26, and a larger American-style event the following day at Jorgensen Farms in Westerville.
“My culture has always been very important to me, and Jacob has been curious and eager to learn about it,” Kim says. “My family is very superstitious and said getting married on Saturday—between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.— would bring us the best luck.”
The couple personalized their weddings with Vietnamese, Japanese and French desserts and incorporated calla lilies. “I’ve always loved them,” Kim says. “They’re such a simple flower, but so elegant.” They also are the flowers that Jacob just happened to bring on their first date, not knowing at the time how much they meant to Kim.
Planning two, back-to-back ceremonies was stressful, Kim says. “What wedding is perfect? And two? But when we were walking up for our first dance, it was like no one else was there. We just saw each other.”
The New Albany couple had to postpone their honeymoon twice when their dog suffered injuries and required surgery, but they’re now planning a trip to Africa in February 2023. «

What began as a “right swipe” on the dating app Hinge resulted in the commencement of an exquisite, breathtaking celebration of love between Hannah (Leeman) and Zack Schulman.
The pair matched in the summer of 2018, chatting virtually for months before meeting for the first time at Paulie Gee’s in the Short North, where they hit it off over pizza and beer. “I never had a first date like that before,” says Hannah. “And I never will again!”
Not too long after that first date, Hannah invited Zack on her family vacation. “We had just been dating for a couple of months, and I was already a part of the family,” Zack says. “It was pretty clear that it was just meant to be.”
On Sept. 26, 2020, Zack proposed to Hannah at Crabtree Falls outside of Asheville, North Carolina.
“We were vacationing with our two friends, and one of them was acting strange—giddy and goofy—all day, so I was like, ‘Something is up!’” Hannah says. Zack led her under the waterfall before dropping to one knee and asking for her hand in marriage. “I was laughing, crying and losing it,” says Hannah. “It was such a perfect, beautiful and romantic moment.” Miraculously, Hannah and Zack’s friends were the only folks present during the engagement, as opposed to 10 minutes later, when throngs of people flooded the area.
As a vegan bride, it was important for Hannah to employ sustainable practices and offer vegan alternatives. Save-the-dates were printed on tea towels for practicality, invitations were created from wildflower seed paper so that guests could plant them, and vegan options for hors d’oeuvres, entrées and desserts were available—not to mention the vegan wedding cake!
Hannah and Zack both cherished the opportunity to share significant Jewish traditions and rituals with their non-Jewish friends. “It was nice to go through the same ceremony that my sister had, my parents had, [Hannah’s] parents had, her sister—and to experience the breaking of the glass, the ketubah signing and the hora!” Zack says.
During their ceremony, the newlyweds were “cool, calm, and collected,” thanks in part to the experts who made the extravagant event possible. “This was the wedding of my dreams,” says Hannah. “We wouldn’t have been able to do any of the crazy stuff that we did without our vendors!” «
Originally from West Virginia, Jeffrey Tice (on the right in the photo above) matched with Columbusite Joshua Hartley on Tinder in March 2018 while visiting a friend in the city. Jeffrey didn’t respond to Joshua’s initial message, because he didn’t want to pursue a long-distance relationship. However, on Christmas Day that same year, Joshua messaged Jeffrey again, and the pair had their first date four days later.
“I had told Jeffrey that my favorite candle was this scent called cactus blossom, and he showed up with two of them,” says Jeffrey. “I opened the door and was like, ‘One, he’s stunning, and two, he brought candles. I’m sold.’”
After dating, the pair discussed a shared desire: “We both wanted the feeling of being proposed to,” says Joshua, now Joshua Tice.
On Oct. 4, 2020—their 21-month anniversary—Joshua replicated his and Jeffrey’s first date, a visit to Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. “I could tell he was super nervous,” Jeffrey says, “but once he got down on one knee, it was pure excitement.” Six weeks later, Joshua proposed to Jeffrey under the pergola where they shared their first kiss.
On Nov. 15, the couple dressed up for brunch and walked around Frank Fetch Park in German Village. “I saw my photographer friend, who I hired for my proposal, dodge into a bush, and as soon as I turned back around, [Jeffrey] was on one knee,” Joshua says. Jeffrey proposed to Joshua in the neighborhood where they would end up relocating in a year’s time, rendering both proposal locations exceptionally meaningful to their love story.
The pair were married on the rooftop of the National Veterans Memorial and Museum in Franklinton, where they walked hand in hand up the ramp and down the aisle to the ceremony.
“I remember getting goosebumps all over as soon as we turned the corner and saw everyone,” says Joshua. “The wedding of my dreams had come to fruition.” Joshua surprised Jeffrey with a musical interlude as part of his wedding vows, which he had been secretly practicing for weeks.
As the reception came to a close, family and friends all danced in a large circle around the newlyweds, singing along to “Country Roads” by John Denver. “I hadn’t cried the whole day,” says Joshua, “but I completely lost my mind during that.” «

Yichen and Alex Calnon didn’t let a pandemic, distance or language barriers get in the way of their love. Alex read his vows in Mandarin, “which was especially meaningful, as my parents do not speak English,” Yichen says. Her parents and several of their friends gathered at 4 a.m. local time to watch a livestream of the wedding.

Madeline and Scott Stroup met when Scott visited Philadelphia, where Madeline was living, in 2015. They “instantly clicked, leading me to making the sevenhour drive to Columbus two weeks later,” Madeline says. Now both living in Columbus, the pair said “we do” at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium—where they had their first date—in May 2022. The day included giraffe-feeding in the Heart of Africa exhibit and visits from several of the zoo’s animal ambassadors.
STROUP | May 21, 2022
Inclement weather needn’t ruin an outdoor event, says Madeline. “It started raining during the ceremony, which made for some beautiful photos,” she notes. “Goes to show that nothing was stopping us that day!” She and Scott named their specialty cocktails after their pets. Four cocktails honored their dogs, Zoey and Charlie, and cats, Nub and Izzy.

ZANDRA CASTO AND ASHLEY DZURNAK | June 25, 2022
After eloping in May 2021, Zandra (left in the photo above) and Ashley (right) celebrated with family and friends one year later at Post 4 at North 4th Corridor. A special guest included their then-unborn child: Zandra was eight months pregnant at their reception. “Our path was unique, but we are so happy we decided to do it that way,” Zandra says.

Reilly and Kory lived an hour apart when they matched on Bumble, so they met in the middle for their first date—fittingly, in Middletown, Ohio. As proof of their compatibility, that first date spanned eight hours and three locations. For their unity ceremony at Nationwide Hotel and Conference Center, the couple combined blue and purple glass sand, called frit, which was later blown into an art piece.

JENNA AND JOSH REIN | May 22, 2022
The Reins wanted their wedding at the Club at Tartan Fields “to be a different brunch affair,” Jenna says. Guests grabbed mimosas before the ceremony, which was followed by games like Giant Jenga and cornhole instead of dancing. “The wedding artist, mimosa stand, bright florals and yard games made the whole Sunday brunch vibe different than a regular evening wedding,” she adds.
Add in a half hour of buffer time for most events, and make sure people know the schedule. That (might) stop them from bugging you about ‘what’s next’ on wedding day. Or hire a fabulous planner!

“I
going to
car shows with my dad, and Todd is a 20-year member of the
Car Club of America, so a great car was a must,” says Audrey. She and her father made their ceremony entrance at Wren Farm in a 1950 Buick that had been used in other family weddings, including Audrey’s parent’s. “We were lucky to continue that tradition,” she says.

Try to incorporate something of your mother’s or grandmother’s gown in your wedding ensemble. ... Save all the remnants of your wedding gown after alterations so your kids can do this, too!!

“We wanted to incorporate some of the better things in life—food and travel!—to make the day a bit more personal,” says Hannah Macko of her and Kristin Peoples’ June 4, 2022, wedding at Retreat 21. The brides made intentional choices in the menu to delight the taste buds, and they named guest tables after places they’d traveled together (Paros, Greece; Patagonia, South America; Plitvicka Jezera, Croatia; Garibaldi Lake, Canada; and Barcelona, Spain) instead of using numbers. Still, Hannah says, the most memorable part of the day was “being surrounded by our closest family and friends.”
