(OW TO STAY SAFE ON WINTRY ROADS (MET) — Many people will remember the winter of 2013-’14 for all the wrong reasons. Record low temperatures and heavy snowfall were the stories last winter. With winter upon us once again, motorists are looking for ways to ensure their daily commutes or holiday trips are as safe as possible. When wintry conditions, including snowfall, compromise driving conditions, it’s best for motorists to stay home. But avoiding roadways altogether is not always an option, so motorists who must venture out onto the roadways can employ the following strategies to ensure they safely arrive at their destinations. s -AINTAIN YOUR VEHICLE A vehicle should be maintained regardless of the season, but it’s especially important that your vehicle perform at its peak in winter. A vehicle’s battery and windshield wipers are a winter driver’s best friend, but only if they are operating at optimal capacity. “Washer uid is really important this time of yearâ€? to ensure visibility, and motorists should have it topped off, said Steve Miller, service manager for AAA Car Care in Grandview. Being stranded on a roadside in winter is more dangerous than during any other time of year. That’s because driver visibility is

more compromised in winter. As such, maintain proper uid levels and make sure your battery is charged and the gas tank is full before making any winter trips. s #ONSIDER WINTER TIRES Many drivers are unsure if they need winter tires. All-season tires may sufďŹ ce for those drivers who live in regions where heavy snowfall is uncommon. But, winter tires are designed to perform when the temperatures are especially cold and in driving conditions featuring ice, slush and snow. “If you really want the maximum in safety and security, the best investment you can make is a set of snow tires,â€? said Bill Visnic, senior editor at Edmunds.com. Some drivers mistakenly think that vehicle features such as antilock braking systems and traction control make their tires more capable of handling wintry roads. But such features do not provide more traction. ABS and traction control only prevent drivers from overbraking or overpowering the traction of their tires. Only better tires will improve traction. s $RIVE SLOWLY Winter weather can make roadways unsafe even in areas that have not witnessed a single snowake fall from the sky. Wet winter roads can quickly turn into icy winter roads, and no ABS system or traction-control device

can prevent a car that’s traveling too fast from skidding. Poor visibility is another reason to drive slowly in winter. Peripheral vision is often compromised when driving in winter, as dirt, salt or sand build up on windshields and side windows and mirrors. Even if your vision is not compromised, a fellow motorist’s might be. So ease up on the gas pedal in winter so you have more time to react to adverse conditions. “Always drive with caution, especially on slick roads, and never text and drive, said Todd Parsley, service advisor for Jim Keim Ford in Hilliard, adding the key to safety is paying attention. s $ON T FOLLOW TOO CLOSELY TO OTHER MOTORISTS In addition to driving slowly, motorists should leave extra room between their vehicle and the vehicle in front of them. In such conditions, for every 10 mph, drive a minimum of four car lengths behind the motorist in front of you. This gives you ample time to react and builds in some extra response time should your visibility be compromised. Wintry conditions often make driving hazardous, but drivers who adopt certain habits when driving in winter can greatly reduce their risk of accidents.

(OW TO DIG OUT YOUR CAR AFTER A STORM Some people prefer to put the defroster on right away. Others wait until the vehicle warms up before doing so. Having a warm car will melt some of the accumulated ice and snow and make it easier for you to clear the car. s 4HE RIGHT TOOLS MAKE FASTER WORK OF THE TASK AT HAND A shovel is a necessity, and a telescoping snow broom/ice scraper can be helpful. “Make an investment in a really good windshield scraper, said Bill Visnic, senior editor for Edmunds.com. This allows you to safely push the snow off the roof of the car and scrape your windshield and windows to have optimal visibility, he said. Some regions penalize drivers who do not remove snow from the roofs or hoods of their cars, so take the time to clean such snow before driving. s 7ORK FROM THE TOP OF THE VEHICLE DOWN Otherwise, you will end up negating all of your work by throwing fresh snow on the areas you already cleared. s "Y NOW THE DEFROSTERS SHOULD HAVE KICKED IN SUF-

(MET) — The arrival of cooler, shorter days is often a precursor to winter storms dominated by snowfall. A snow-covered landscape can make for an appealing image. But heavy snowfall also makes for extra work, especially for drivers who must dig their vehicles out of the snow after each storm. Some people live in suburban areas where they can park their cars in driveways or garages, while others live in cities and have to park on the street, where snowplows can do a wonderful job of burying vehicles underneath mounds of snow. Rescuing a car or truck from a pile of snow can be tricky and time-consuming, but there is a process that can make the job easier. s "EGIN BY CLEARING OUT THE TAIL PIPE OF THE CAR This is a vital ďŹ rst step because failure to do so can back harmful carbon monoxide gas and other fumes into the car. Take the time to clear out the rear of the car, including the taillights, so you will have improved visibility. s 7HEN THE EXHAUST PIPE IS CLEAR TURN ON THE CAR

lCIENTLY ENOUGH TO MAKE IT SIMPLE TO CLEAR SNOW FROM THE WINDSHIELD AND REAR WINDOW Use some deicing windshield uid to dislodge wiper blades if they have frozen to the windshield. Some drivers leave their wiper blades standing on end and away from the windshield prior to a big storm to prevent them from freezing to the windshield. Consider this trick if you’re especially worried about the blades freezing to the glass. Steve Miller, service manager for AAA Car Care Plus in Grandview, recommended that drivers also turn off the windshield wipers when they turn off their ignitions. Otherwise, the wipers will automatically turn on when the car is started. If the windshield is covered in ice or snow, “something usually breaks,â€? he said. s 5SE YOUR SHOVEL TO CAREFULLY REMOVE AS MUCH SNOW AS POSSIBLE FROM AROUND THE TIRES Be careful not to puncture the tire with a metal shovel. Try to create a tire path in the direction you plan to move the vehicle. So if

you will be backing out of the driveway, clear the way behind the car. If traction is a problem, use some rock salt or cat litter behind the tires to give them more grip. Miller said that you could also use your car mats — placing them under the tires can help create traction to get you moving. s %XERCISE CAUTION IF YOU ARE DIGGING OUT A CAR ON A

BUSY ROADWAY Make yourself visible to other motorists and use trafďŹ c cones, if you have them, to keep drivers away from your vehicle. Do not shovel the snow in the path of oncoming vehicles. (OW TO IMPROVE WINTER FUEL ECONOMY (MET) — Many motorists notice that their vehicles seem to get fewer miles per gallon in cold weather than in warm weather. That’s not a trick of the brain, as studies have shown that cars do get poorer fuel economy in cold weather. “As the temperature goes down, fuel economy goes down,â€? said Bill Visnic, senior editor for Edmunds.com. According to the United States Department of Energy, fuel economy tests have indicated that, when doing short-trip city driving, a conventional gasoline car’s gas mileage is about 12 percent lower at 20 F than it would be at 77 F. The disparity is even greater in hybrid vehicles, which can see fuel economy decline by roughly 34 percent when driven at 20 F. Before drivers can understand how to improve their winter fuel economy, it’s beneďŹ cial to learn why cold weather has such an adverse effect on a car’s fuel economy. A host of factors combine to reduce fuel economy in the winter. When temperatures dip, engine oil and other drive-line uids also

get colder, and this increases engine and transmission friction. That forces the vehicle to work harder and use more fuel. An engine also takes longer to reach its most fuel-efďŹ cient temperature when the weather is cold. This won’t have too great of an impact on fuel efďŹ ciency when taking long trips, but the shorter the trip, the less economical the vehicle’s use of fuel will be. Another reason fuel economy suffers in the winter is the need for certain creature comforts when driving in cold weather. Windshield defrosters and vehicle heating systems use a substantial amount of power, and that usage forces the vehicle to expend more energy and use more fuel. Visnic said if you are idling your car to defrost your windshield, you are using up gas and driving down fuel economy. “If you don’t want to let your car run forever, bite the bullet and scrape your windshield,â€? he suggested. And while many drivers consider heated seats one of the greatest automotive inventions known to man,

those seats also use up a lot of power that negatively impacts fuel economy. But factors outside the vehicle also impact its fuel economy in winter. Colder temperatures decrease tire pressure, and that increases roll resistance, which means the car must work harder and use more fuel than it would if it were riding on fully inated tires during summer. Cold air is more dense, and that increases aerodynamic drag on the vehicle. So what can be done to improve fuel economy in winter? Here are a few tips. s 0ARK THE VEHICLE IN A GARAGE Leaving your car in the driveway in winter means you might have to dig it out of a snowstorm. But that’s not the only inconvenience of parking your vehicle outside in winter, as doing so could adversely affect fuel economy. Parking the car in the garage increases the initial temperature of the engine, engine oil, drive-line uids and the vehicle’s cabin. This can shorten the time it takes for the engine to reach its most fuel-efďŹ cient temperature while decreasing the engine and transmission friction

that negatively impacts fuel efďŹ ciency. s $ISREGARD CONVENTIONAL WISDOM Conventional wisdom has long suggested that idling a vehicle for several minutes will warm up the engine more quickly than simply driving. But many vehicle manufacturers now recommend that drivers idle their vehicles for no more than 30 seconds, noting that idling the car wastes fuel and that driving the vehicle is the fastest way to warm up its engine. If you must warm up your car, stick to the halfminute guideline. Another nugget of conventional wisdom motorists may want to ignore concerns motor oil. Many vehicle manufacturers recommend a speciďŹ c type of oil when driving in cold weather, so follow that advice instead of adhering to past practices that may not have been as fuelefďŹ cient. s -ONITOR TIRE PRESSURE As noted, colder temperatures decrease tire pressure, so drivers should monitor their tire pressure regularly to keep their vehicle safe and ensure they are not wasting fuel. s 2EMOVE THE ROOF RACK

IMAGE METRO CREATIVE

Summer adventurists who attach their mountain bike or kayak to the roof racks of their vehicles should remove them when the temperatures dip. Roof racks increase wind resistance and decrease fuel economy, so remove them during the off-season. Fuel economy will almost certainly decrease when the mercury drops. But drivers can employ a number of strategies to make their vehicles more fuel efďŹ cient in cold weather.

What is the difference between AWD and 4WD? (MET) — Winter weather has some drivers wondering if their two-wheeldrive vehicles can handle roads covered in snow and ice. Now is the time people flock to car and truck dealerships to trade in their cars for something with a little more power and traction and to take advantage of end-of-season pricing. When faced with an array of vehicles boasting four-wheel drive and allwheel drive, consumers often wonder about the differences between the two options or if there is any difference at all. Though similar, four-wheel drive and all-wheel drive are not quite the same. Four-wheel-drive systems, often referred to as 4WD, trace their origins to the late 1800s, while all-wheel-drive systems, or AWD, did not arrive until the late 1970s, when an AWD system was used on an Audi vehicle for rally racing. Now many cars and trucks come with 4WD or AWD, particularly crossovers and SUVs.

"OTH DRIVE SYSTEMS ENGAGE ALL FOUR wheels at the same time to provide more traction. On AWD systems, the powering of the wheels is automatic and usually handled by the electronic system of the car. Some vehicles drive in twowheel drive, but then engage AWD when sensors detect a need for more traction and maneuverability. When operating 4WD vehicles, drivers may have to manually engage the system. True 4WD uses a transfer case mounted by the rear of the transmission. A button or selector lever on older model SUVs would switch the vehicle from 2WD to 4WD. Unlike in AWD systems, the front and rear axles are locked together in 4WD systems. Four-wheel-drive systems are better for off-roading, rock climbing and driving through mud and water. Individuals who participate in many off-road recreational activities will find that 4WD, especially in vehicles with more gears, is more effective and provides better traction.

IMAGE THINKSTOCKPHOTOS.COM

All-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive systems are similar, but the latter is preferable for off-road driving. All-wheel drive provides stability, largely on roadways, and enables the vehicle to modify the level of power to either the front or rear wheels to improve traction as needed. All-wheel drive is adequate for many drivers and situations. It is important to note that, on icy or slippery roads, neither AWD or 4WD systems assist with braking or completely prevent cars from skidding

on slick surfaces. Having the ability to engage all four wheels at the same time should not be used as a replacement for cautious driving in inclement weather. Four-wheel drive and all-wheel drive both provide power to all four wheels on the vehicle but have subtle differences that make each better for certain driving conditions.

Visibility starts with your windshield (MET) — Visibility is an essential component of automotive safety. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration, inability to clearly see the road, other motorists and potential obstacles is a leading contributor to automotive accidents and injury. Approximately half of all fatalities due to motor vehicle crashes occur at night, even though the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration noted that traffic volume is substantially less at night. Lack of visibility, which may result from a dirty windshield or inclement weather, can render pavement markings nearly invisible or throw off drivers’ senses of direction. Poor visibility can be hazardous, and drivers must take steps to ensure they have maximum visibility at all times, whether it’s day or night or if the weather is poor or fair. One of the best ways to ensure maximum visibility is to keep your windshield clean. Not all windshield washer

fluids and wipers are created equal. For example, some washer fluids are ineffective in freezing temperatures. Frozen washer fluid can cause a complete blockage of the system and greatly impair visibility. As anyone who has driven on snowy and/ or salty roads can attest, such substances can quickly gather on windshields, where they crust up and impede visibility. A windshield cleaning system that is not working effectively is a recipe for an accident. Always read the product label before purchasing washer fluid. Summer blends are only effective when temperatures remain above 32 F. When the mercury dips below freezing, these fluids freeze up. Winter formulas should contain an antifreeze solution that will lower the freezing point of the liquid. Many such fluids employ methanol to not only prevent freezing but also to melt frost and light accumulations of ice. Drivers also may be able to supplement their washer fluids with common items to increase durability during

IMAGE THINKSTOCKPHOTOS.COM

Maintain a clean windshield to ensure your visibility is not compromised while driving. extreme cold snaps. Mix 99 percent isopropyl rubbing alcohol into the washer fluid to prevent it from freezing. Otherwise, the washer-fluid brand may have specific instructions for mixing for use in areas where the temperature regularly dips below freezing. In addition to main-

taining an obstructionfree washer-fluid system, drivers can reduce accidents from poor visibility by heeding these tips from The National Weather Service: s #LEAR YOUR WINDshield and mirrors before getting on the road. s $RIVE SLOWLY TO maintain a safe stopping

distance. s "E AWARE THAT when driving in conditions where visibility is impaired, drivers tend to follow the taillights of the vehicles in front of them. Keep your headlights on to improve your own visibility and help others see your car. s $ON T SLOW DOWN SO

much that you become a hazard to other drivers. s )F NECESSARY PULL off the road and wait for conditions to improve. When pulling off, park as far off the road as possible, then turn off your headlights and put on your hazard lights.
