But we like to spice things up a bit and give attendees to the show new things to do and see every year, too. So ... what’s new? • There have long been two stages at the show, which host demonstrations and presentations on everything from how to remodel your kitchen to how to make a delicious soup. This year, for the first time, we’ve added a third stage — the Lowe’s DIY Stage — that will be packed with classes and demos for the do-it-yourselfer in you. (For a complete schedule, see page 13.)

each year, thousands of folks

just like you attend the Central Ohio Home & Garden Show presented by gridSMART from AEP Ohio because they know what to expect. They know they can come to the show with rough ideas about their next home-improvement project in their heads — and leave with inspiration, tips, advice from the experts and the names of pros who can do the job right.

• A pair of stars from the worlds of design and renovation will be making their first-ever appearances at the show. You can meet Marc Bartolomeo of DIY Network’s “Kitchen Impossible” on Saturday, Feb. 25, and Candice Olson of HGTV’s “Candice Tells All” and “Divine Design” on Saturday, March 3. (For more information on Candice and Marc, see page 4.) • You can enter to win a gift that keeps on saving: an Energy Star appliance package worth $10,000 from gridSMART by AEP Ohio. All you have to do is stop by the AEP Ohio display

Nationwide Children’s Hospital

at booths 130 and 231 for your chance to win. No purchase necessary. • The Garden Showcase, in honor of our city’s bicentennial, has a “Happy Birthday, Columbus” theme this year. Members of the Columbus Landscape Association stepped up their games with intricate gardens based on the Arena District, the Columbus Museum of Art, Hayden Falls (complete with a 12-foot waterfall!) and more. (You can read more about the bicentennial gardens on page 12.) • The Design Center featuring JELD-WEN: Doorway To Your Imagination is a pathway your kids will love, with a sandbox, sidewalk chalk, tunnels and more. • The Market Place will feature 20 unique cash-and-carry vendors offering bulbs, art, handbags, decorations and more in an outdoor market setting. • The Central Ohio Chevy Dealers are bringing four Chevys to the show. Be on the lookout for their Volt, Equinox, Cruze and Malibu models. • And throughout the show floor, check out four “Happy Birthday”-themed tablescapes designed by Lasting Impressions Event Rentals.

columbus Savvy Shopper

laurie dixon

Saturday, Feb. 25, at noon wednesday, Feb. 29, at 2 p.m. No one knows Central Ohio deals, coupons and shopping strategies like Columbus Savvy Shopper Laurie Dixon. Just one look at her web site (facebook.com/ columbussavvyshopper), her appearances on 10TV or her articles in The Dispatch leaves no doubt that she is the grand champion of saving Central Ohioans money. Dixon is making two appearances at the show to give you her money-saving ideas and extreme-couponing tips. Bring YOUR tips, too. Let’s all save some money together!

diY network renovation specialist

marc Bartolomeo Saturday, Feb. 25, 3 p.m.

On DIY Network’s “Kitchen Impossible,” Bartolomeo, a true jack-of-all-trades, turns homeowners’ kitchen makeover fantasies into reality. During his appearance at the show, Bartolomeo will talk about his series, discuss kitchen renovations and take your questions. Bartolomeo has more than 20 years of experience in commercial, residential and industrial renovation. Before landing on DIY Network, he biked from job site to job site growing up (while his friends were playing sports), attended trade school, worked as an electrician and traveled the globe. Additionally, Bartolomeo has appeared on “HGTV’s Design Star” and “The Nate Berkus Show” and won the “America’s Hunikest Handyman” contest awarded via “The Tony Danza Show” and a nationwide audience.

Nicholas Dekker has always loved breakfast — so much so that he started a blog about the best places in Central Ohio to eat the first meal of the day. That blog, breakfastwithnick.wordpress.com, proved so popular that he wrote a book, “Breakfast With Nick.” At the show, Dekker will dissect the Columbus breakfast-dining scene, offer some of his personal favorites, take your questions and have his book available for purchase.

candice olSon

Candice Olson, star of HGTV’s “Candice Tells All” and “Divine Design,” will share her design ideas, answer audience questions and meet with guests during an autograph session following her appearance. In addition to starring in two of HGTV’s most popular homeimprovement shows, Olson established her own interior design firm more than a decade ago and has worked on a wide range of residential and commercial projects. In 2002, Olson made her debut when she launched her No. 1-rated TV show, “Divine Design.” Ten years later, she remains one of television’s top designers and is known by millions of TV viewers for her signature style and trademark sense of humor. Olson’s latest show, “Candice Tells All,” takes viewers through the ins and outs of her signature makeover style while exploring major design principles. A leading style and design professional, Olson is one of America’s most sought-after designer brands, and The New York Times has called her “the one to watch.”

Don’t miss these popular attractions Some of the features we’ve introduced to the show in recent years have proved so popular, we just had to bring them back. Here are some top returning attractions, at a glance: • We’ll have food sampling EVERY DAY, as talented local chefs from the Central Ohio Restaurant Association cook some of their favorite dishes. (For a complete list of chefs coming to the show, please see the schedule on page 11.) • Last year, it became one of the show’s hot spots because it’s relaxing and just plain cool, so check it out this time around: the 97.1 FAN Cave built and designed by The Basement Doctor. The Cave is the definition of fun, with a bar, a big screen, surround sound, sports memorabilia and pub games galore. You might even envision what’s possible for your “man cave.”

Additionally, The FAN will be broadcasting live from the FAN Cave. Catch the Buckeye Warm-Up Show at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26, and “Common Man & The Torg” Thursday, March 1, from 3-6 p.m.

• Need to update the look inside your home? Pick up ideas by walking through the NARI Remodeling Pavilion, as well as the Kitchen Corner presented by Granite Transformations, featuring six stunning kitchens that will amaze you.

• THIS is the garage you’ve always dreamed of: the 97.1 The FAN and Columbus Car Audio & Accessories “My Guy” Ultimate Garage presented by Tattletale. It will be tricked out with a Chevy Camaro, a pumping sound system, power tools and the works.

• Watch for appearances by NBC4 gardener extraordinaire Tom McNutt; lawn and garden expert Ashton Ritchie; “living statue” Mark Abbati; pianist Dave Bott playing in the Garden Showcase and more

Be there Thursday, March 1, from 6-8 p.m. when 97.1 The FAN’s Dimitrious Stanley and Anthony Rothman broadcast “The Big Show” live from the Ultimate Garage.

• On Saturday, Feb. 25, at 1 p.m., you can look on as some of the area’s top flower experts are put through the paces during our floral-arranging competition.

• The very next day from 2-4 p.m., we’ll have our annual amateur cake decorating competition, judging and — perhaps most importantly — tasting! • Pick up a complimentary official show bag from Ohio Mulch and Farmers Citizens Bank during your visit to the show to give your arms a rest from carrying all the brochures and literature you’re going to pick up from the exhibitors you meet. • And The Closets By Design coat check will be open during show hours so you can drop off your heavy coat, relax and enjoy your day.

A day For everyone! once again this year, the show has a number of special themed days, many of which allow you to get in to the show at a reduced rate. • Opening day, Saturday, Feb. 25, is 10TV Day and OxyWater Sample Day at the show. Meet 10TV personalities like Jerry Revish, Andrea Cambern, Tracy Townsend and Chris Bradley from 10:30 a.m. to noon, and sample some OxyWater, too. • The Columbus Dispatch continues its celebration of Columbus’ 200th birthday with Dispatch Subscriber Day at the show on Tuesday, Feb. 28. A coupon good for $3 off the regular admission price that day is available through Dispatch Reader Rewards at dispatch.com/rewards.

You’ll have a chance to win a $500 Kroger Gift card at the Dispatch booth. And from 6-7 p.m. you’re invited to the “Columbus Dispatch Birthday Bash.” Editor Ben Marrison will be on hand to answer your questions about the paper, and you can give our prize wheel a spin. Plus, we’ll have refreshments and a whole lotta fun! • Wednesday, Feb. 29, is Senior Day, when guests 55-plus get in to the show for just $9 — that’s $3 off the regular admission price.

NBC4 Meteorologist Jym Ganahl will be there that day at 12:30 p.m. to talk about how you can prepare yourself for severe weather. • Ladies, grab your girlfriends, sisters, mothers and daughters, because Sunny 95 is bringing Girls’ Nite Out to the show on Thursday, March 1, from 6-9 p.m. Go to Sunny95.com for $10 admission tickets and join the fun. What’s in it for you? Drinks, hors d’oeuvres, a gift bag and more.

telhio

• Friday, March 2, is AAA Show Your Card and Save Day. Simply show your Ohio AAA Club card at the box office and you and a guest can get in to the show for just $9.

The tykes will enjoy The Design Center featuring JELD-WEN: Doorway To Your Imagination, which will have a sandbox, sidewalk chalk, tunnels and more.

• That night from 7-9, it’s A Magic Night Out with Magic 106.3, featuring a wine-tasting. It’s just $2 per person, and you must be 21 or older with a valid ID.

Plus, there will be activities at the Kids Korner presented by CW Columbus and WCOL; a visit from creatures from the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium; appearances by Dr. Insecta and his bugs; a demonstration by the Young Chefs Academy; cupcake decorating and more!

• Bring your children on Saturday, March 3 — our annual Kids Day at the show.

haPPy birthday, columbus!

For this year’s garden showcase at the central ohio home & garden show, members of the columbus landscape association looked at columbus’ bicentennial for inspiration. their results? amazing. they translated nearly a dozen columbus icons, landmarks and institutions into living green spaces that would be the envy of any neighborhood. here’s a quick glance at the 11 gardens inviting you to walk through them in the celeste center. When you visit the show, you can get a more in-depth look by picking up a brochure about the gardens near the entrance of the showcase. bencHMarK landScape cOnStructiOn, inc. the brewery district cedarbrOOK landScapinG and Garden center, inc. back, now and into the Future FiVe SeaSOnS landScape ManaGeMent, inc. ‘new’ city Hall
