She gave a brief background of the Education Committee’s work on a pamphlet/booklet to distribute to school districts and parents. In addition she reviewed the committee’s ongoing focus of providing information to schools, parents and students on ways of making the educational experience meaningful for all parties. The focus of the committee was: • To advocate for the improvement of the education of Latino children • To create a school culture in which Latino students can be academically and socially successful by increasing communication, opportunities, role modes, programs and cultural exchange • To inform the community about the education needs of Latinos through awareness and advocacy efforts • To empower parents to become active participants in their children’s learning through education them about their rights, responsibilities, and resources Brandy shared the work she has done on creating the pamphlet/booklet and what she understood we wanted it to look like. As she went through the information suggestions were added. Lupe stated Grange Insurance is prepared to print a limited number of copies for us but the deadline was the end of the week, so any and all changes needed completion within a couple of days. It was suggested Brandy send out the document and everyone would comment and get changes to her by the end of the week. She will then incorporate everyone’s input and send it out again for final approval. Everyone is asked to respond by January 12, noon. Once the pamphlet/booklet is printed the committee will discuss its distribution. Some suggestions beyond schools are police departments, First Link, Adult Literacy Council, libraries, etc. The committee voted on a chair and secretary. The chair of the committee is Magaly Vazquez and secretary is Sarah Pechan. It was suggested the education committee plan a retreat to discuss revising the mission and determining future activities. The next LEON Education committee meeting is Friday, February 26, 9:30 a.m. at the Jerry Hammond City Building, 1111 E. Broad St.
