Pamper Your Mother In present day America and countries around the world Mother’s Day is the day to celebrate and honor mothers. The form of the celebration may have more commercial components –but the spirit of day is very much true and sincere, it is a day to pamper, to honor and to give back to Mothers for all their many contributions to American society and on a very personal level, to honor all their gifts of love and kindness to each of their children. The National Restaurant Association states that Mother’s Day is now the second most popular day for Americans to dine out at a restaurant. A family brunch or cozy family dinner, is a great way to honor mom and focus the day on the essence of the holiday. Mother’s Day is not only about honoring a mother’s commitment and love she has for her children, but it is a day to reunite the family and a time to enjoy everyone’s company. Champagne brunch, a trip to her favorite restaurant or a chance to try something a bit out of the ordinary are all ways to honor mothers and share special times with family. Contiuned on Page 5

Celebrating Motherhood Mother’s Day can trace its roots to the ancient Greek festival of Cybele, the great mother of Greek gods. The ancient Romans had a complimentary holiday, Matronalia, which was dedicated to Juno. Mothers traditionally received gifts on this ancient holiday. Mothering Sunday – in Great Britain traces its roots the 16th century tradition of returning to a person’s home church on the fourth Sunday of Lent – exactly three weeks prior to Easter. This pilgrimage to ones home church would also serve as a day to reunify families, a gift to mothers everywhere, and a day for a mother to be with all of her children once again. ColumbusLivingMag.com

Mother’s Day in the United States falls on the second Sunday of May and is loosely based on the Mothering Sunday tradition in Great Britain. Imported by Julia Ward Howe after the Civil War, Howe’s vision for the day was to bring mothers together united for peace. Anna Javis picked up the social crusade for a day to honor women after the death of her own mother. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson declared the first national Mother’s Day, a day for American citizens to fly the flag in honor of mothers whose sons had died in war. Later a few years after this first National Mother’s Day became more of a commercial success Javis became a very vocal opponent, feeling the day had lost its honor and peace focus.

Pamper Your Mother way to bond for mothers and daughters living in distance cities or just down the block. Sometimes the best gift is the gift of time. Many mothers focus so much of their energy into providing for her children, being a taxi service from the various activities, cooking and cleaning, that they seldom take time to pursue activities, which truly interest them. Their hobbies and passions get shelved while they help their children pursue what excites them. Providing mom with the opportunity to try something new or to experience something meaningful to her is a great way to celebrate Mother’s Day. A series of golf lessons at the local golf club, art lessons with a private teacher, voice lessons, or even organizing a weekend Another traditional way to celebrate Mother’s Day is breakfast in bed, prepared by Dad and the children; a chance to pamper mom, with some extra sleep and then her favorite breakfast, while she is still tucked into bed. A tray set beautifully with her favorite breakfast treats, like tea and scones, donuts and coffee, eggs and ham, omelets and hotcakes. The little touches like that of fresh cut flowers on the tray and a wonderful hand made card, will complete the celebration. Wanting to shift the focus from heartwarming and cozy to pampering and decadent? A day trip to a spa is a wonderful way to show mom that all she does did not go unnoticed. Mothering is a full-time twenty four-seven job and every mother could use a day of rest and relaxation from time to time. A relaxing trip to the day spa is the ultimate way to honor mothers on Mother’s Day but also to help her rest and rejuvenate. Many spas and salons offer special mother’s day packages, which include a variety of spa and salon services. Careful shopping will also reveal packages, which include hotel accommodations, dinner coupons and other relaxing activities turning her trip to the Spa into a mini vacation. A mother/ daughter spa weekend is a great

and purchase. A nice piece of jewelry will service as a symbol and lasting reminding of her children’s love, for days to come.

get away, complete with cooking lessons, hiking or a Yoga retreat. Honoring mom and giving her the gift of time is a great way to show that she, the unique woman that she is, is very important. There is a good bit of jewelry on the market specifically designed to honor mothers. Birthstone rings and necklaces, with gemstones for each child. Many designers offer contemporary expressions and symbols of mothers, in their rings, earrings, bracelets and necklaces. There is something for every mother, which will express her unique traits as well as celebrate her personal style. It is a great gift for siblings to search for 5

Some of the best gifts also come in small sizes and are created with small hands; mothers love homemade treasures, made with love and determination. Homemade cards and pictures are a lasting memento every mother loves. Add to the lovely home made gift, a picture frame and candid snap shot or studio portrait, flowers or potted plants and it is simple yet heartfelt gift, truly honoring mothers. The spirit of Mother’s Day is one of love and honor and while Mother’s Day can trace its roots back to ancient festivals, days of trekking to ones home church, and the early peace movement in the United States, the spirit of the holiday is alive and well today. Mothers devote much time and energy in raising, guiding and loving their children. Once a year, this is this day set aside to honor all that Mothers are and all that they do. Every gift is as unique and wonderful as the person who gives it. Mothers appreciate the idea that they have this special day dedicated just for them!

For an artist, there is one basic necessity: creative inspiration. It’s the muse, the spark, the essential ingredient that motivates. In the beauty and fashion industry, there is often no better place to find inspiration than in cities around the world. Each city has its own personality and style of artistic energy. Paris may inspire looks of polished detail and classic embellishments, while Milan exudes excitement and youthfulness in fresh new looks and ever-changing trends. Meanwhile in New York, inspiration may be one of purpose and function, inspiring streamlined styles uncluttered by detail or fuss. Columbus Ohio may not come to mind as a center for fashion trends and creative inspiration; however, the folks at J.Bentley Studio & Spa are working to change that perception. Worthington Jewelers Buys Gold & Estate Jewelry With gold hovering at near-record prices, now is a great time to cash in your old, unwanted or broken jewelry. At Worthington Jewelers, you can convert your old jewelry to cash or trade it for something new. “Many people are surprised to find that they have hundreds or even thousands of dollars sitting around in the form of broken or out-of-style jewelry,” said Joe Davis, managing partner of Worthington Jewelers, 692 High Street, Worthington, Ohio 43085. The store’s phone is 614-430-8800. “If you try to sell jewelry online or take it to a pawn shop, you’ll probably receive only a fraction of its value,” Davis said, noting that Worthington Jewelers pays the highest prices locally for gold and estate jewelry. Because Worthington Jewelers custom crafts jewelry on site, the store almost always has a need for gold, platinum, silver and other precious metals as well as loose diamonds and gemstones. “We’re interested in anything from single pieces of jewelry to entire estates.” Trading in old jewelry is also a great way to stretch your jewelry budget. “ We can create a new, one-of-a-kind piece of jewelry using gemstones and gold from jewelry you no longer wear.” Davis noted that a lot of couples trade in old jewelry to cover part of the cost of their engagement and wedding rings. “Since we also offer the guaranteed lowest prices on certified and loose diamonds, couples can get handcrafted, one-of-a-kind rings from Worthington Jewelers for the same price or less than they’d pay for mass-produced designer brands.” 626 High Street Worthington Oh, 43085 614.430.8800 worthingtonjlrs@sbcglobal.net

Graduation 2008 For many students outfitting their dorm room is a huge priority. Consider purchasing a bed in a bag ensemble, so that they have matching linens, a great way to express their personality and it looks very nice to boot. Other dorm room accessories, like a shower caddy and a gift card to purchase their favorite shampoos and shower essentials is a lovely gift. A laundry hamper or even some matching suitcases or duffle bags make for great gifts for the young person on the go. Still stumped, a quick call to mom and dad might reveal something that the graduate has been dreaming about for the summer or for the beginning of the school year. It is worth a try and could lead to being part of something very meaningful to the graduate.

Graduation Gifts While summer is known for being Wedding Season, spring is known as Graduation season. Preschools, Kindergartens, High Schools and Colleges and Universities all hold graduation festivities during May and June. While the preschoolers and kindergartners are just excited by the pomp and circumstance and will like anything they get to unwrap, deciding on the perfect gift for high school and college students is a bit more of a challenge. Keepsakes are a very traditional approach. Picture frames, jewelry, inspirational books, plagues, memento boxes and schools specific memorabilia make for great and thoughtful presents. They will help cement the great memories of the previous four years in the graduate’s mind. Cold hard cash also works! College is a particularly pricey venture and many graduates like to start out with some money in the bank. If a more creative and innovative gift is the order of the day, then consider some of these thoughtful and not so run of the mill suggestions. ColumbusLivingMag.com

For High school students heading to college in the fall, consider getting them a t-shirt or sweatshirt for their new school, it is a great way to get them into the spirit. For many students, going away to college will be the first time they are away from home and all of the creature comforts of home. Check the local bookstore for a how to guide for laundry and then fill a laundry basket with everything they will need to get their laundry done. Do not forget to include a jar full of quarters; having exact change is often the hardest part of the process! In the age of email, young people rarely write a note home to mom and dad, but a supply of stamps and some note cards might still come in handy. They can use the stamps to pay bills if nothing else. Prepaid cellular cards or a gift card from their current cellular provider are nice gifts. It is a gift that will make staying in touch easier and more affordable. A stash of gift cards from the nearest grocer store is also a great gift idea. It makes taking care of a case of the midnight munchies easier to address come fall.

10

For the college graduate and some high school students, graduation means for many entry into the “real world. For many it is time to get that first real job. Why not give them a gift, which gives them a leg up or a certain edge. Arrange a visit to the local department store and an appointment with a personal shopper. This will not only see the graduate appropriately outfitted but will also offer them a chance to build or create a certain personal style. All that they have learned while in school is important, but creating a personal style is a lesson that will make the graduate a true power house in the work place. Contiuned on Page 11

Graduation 2008 Why not arrange a make over for the graduate. After four years of being a coed or big man on campus, their personal style might be a bit dated. A trip to a spa for some pampering and a new do – is a great way to get them ready for the daily grind of the 9 to 5. A baseball cap is ok for those early morning classes, but it might not work so well for the Monday morning staff meeting. Depending on their field of choice, a new laptop case, briefcase or attaché case is a great gift. Business card holders, desk accessories or other office essentials also make nice gifts. If the graduate is moving to the big city, consider buying them a month or twos worth of subway or bus passes – it will be easy for them to get to work and make weekend exploring more affordable. No public transit in the city they are going to be working in, then a stack of gas cards would be just the thing. Driving around campus is a totally different story from the daily commute to and from work in rush hour traffic. For many graduates, finding that first job is sometimes a struggle. If that is the case for your special graduate, consider securing the services of a resume coach or life coach. Some one on one mentoring might be just they need to make the successful jump from college to workforce. Graduation is a great milestone in every student’s life. With a little ingenuity, finding the perfect gift is as easy as 1, 2, 3!

Anytime Banners Kenneth Matthews, owner of Anytime Banner’s, knows first hand how hectic it is getting ready for the big graduation party. While preparing for his son’s party, he found himself running from store to store, all over town, searching for everything he needed. It is not fun, it is frustrating. With Anytime Banners, the entire banner making process, from ordering to shipping to materials needed to set up the banner, all of it is included and the process is streamlined and efficient. The idea is to make securing the banner hassle free, “no driving all over town for supplies to hang it.” is Ken’s motto. While Anytime Banners can create just about anything on a banner, this time of year the focus is graduation. The ordering process is easy, just visit their website and the template takes the customer, step by step through the banner building process. This is their second year producing graduation banners and they have over 80 logos online to select from and most of the logos and mascots for the schools in the Central Ohio Area are available. Once the order is entered by Debbie Claytor, a proof is generated by the in house designer, Stephanie Jarboe and sent via email to the customer for final approval. When the order is approved, then production can begin in the highly organized and clean production area. Fred Wiley, the production manager, then goes to work, printing and finishing 11

each banner by hand, with keen attention to detail. The banner is then packaged with rope, poles, yellow lawn stakes and hanging instructions. All graduation banners come complete with a limited edition Class of 2008 T-shirt, a special gift to the graduate from Anytime Banners. The entire process generally takes less than 72 hours from proof approval to the banner being shipped. Banners can also be picked up and last minute orders are generally not a problem, Anytime Banners is committed to making the process hassle free. Ken Matthews believes in “meeting the customers’ needs and making it fun and knows that sometimes people procrastinate when it comes to these occasions.” Anytime Banners can make a banner for just about any occasion, including birthdays, birth announcements, weddings, anniversaries, grand opening, and much more. Ken often tells people, “Anything that can go on a banner, we can do.” In addition to banners, Anytime Banners produces magnetic signs, jobsite signs, display boards, window lettering. Graduation 2008 A Quick Guide for Job Seekers – Building Social Capital via Written Materials Getting a good job requires good Social Capital. Social Capital is a mutually benefiting relationship between people based on “knowing, liking and trusting” each other. It usually begins with networking – unless you were born in the right family and/or went to the right school – and continues with the creation of positive feelings – TRUST -- between you and others. The more that people who know, like and trust you – the more likely they will be to “loan” you their social capital to help you get a job. People who recommend you or hire you for a job are taking a RISK. Social Capital

reduces the risk – the recommender is saying “I know, like and trust YOU, so I’ll take the risk of recommending you.” The person hiring is saying “I know, like and trust the person recommending you, so I have a LOWER risk by hiring you rather than some total ‘stranger.’” Many times, when I am asked to review someone’s resume, my first question is “How have/can you used Social Capital to help get the right job?”

b. So ,take a look at what is in your resume and i. Make sure that you believe EVERYTHIING in it and can speak with conviction and passion ii. You MUST feel you are going to be great at it – no matter what that takes

*Make sure the person whose name and number you are giving has agreed to be your ICE partner *Make sure your ICE partner has a list of people they should contact on your behalf - including your place of employment Andy Chiodo is the founder and president of Value Positioning Development®, headquartered in Columbus. Value Positioning helps companies find and communicate compelling reasons for doing business.

Graduation 2008 In Case of Emergency The ICE Number Recent cellular phone industry reports show that there are 215 million cell phone users in the United States and that number is estimated to reach 300 million by 2010. The US Centers for Disease Control & Prevention reported in 2006 that 1.6 million patients arriving in emergency rooms do so while unconscious or in such an altered state that they were unable to provide ER personnel with emergency contact information or vital medical information. Vodafone, a leading cellular phone provider in Europe conducted a study, which showed that less than 25% of people carry detailed personal medical information with them, while other studies have shown that better than 80% people in developed countries carry a cellular phone with them daily. The In Case of Emergency or ICE number campaign, which began in Britain in 2005, is attempting to bridge that gap. Bob Brotchie, a British paramedic, has promoted ICE throughout Europe and slowly the program is beginning to be widely accepted in the United States. ICE is a really simple solution to what many first responders view as a serious issue that they encounter daily. It will ensure they can quickly get in contact with the right people, so that they can provide accident victims and individuals with sudden illnesses the quickest and best care possible. ICE addresses these issues and takes less than an hour to implement. The protocol involves providing a trusted friend or relative with your personal medical information and a list a very important phone numbers and then adding that person or persons to your cellular phone contact list using the name “ICE.” It is that easy.

number. Experiment with your phone by adding a different character to the end of the ICE phone number or contact your cell provider for help with your particular phone. Many people choose to have more than one ICE contact and that is very easy to accomplish also – simply number the listings as ICE1, ICE2 and so forth. If you would like to share this information with friends and family or perhaps encourage other people you know to implement an ICE protocol of their own, you can share this article with them or visit www.icestricker.com to find a variety of marketing materials and nifty phone stickers. The stickers can be affixed to your phone making it even easier for first responders to help you get the help you need.

*Make sure your ICE partner’s number is one that’s easy to contact, for example a home number could be useless in an emergency if that person works full time *Make sure your ICE partner knows about any medical conditions that could affect your emergency treatment - for example, allergies or current medication. Think MAD – Medicines, Allergies, & Doctors.

*Make sure if you are under 18, your ICE partner is a parent or guardian authorized to make decisions on your behalf - for example, if CustomLaserEngraving you need a life or www.legacyimages-pc.com death operation

LegacyImages

*Should your preferred contact be deaf, then prefix the number with ICETEXT – so that first responders know to send a text message. It is really that simple. Some cell phone users have experienced confusion with their phones caller ID – since the ICE protocol typically calls for a duplicated number. One’s mother would typically have a contact named “Mom” with her cell phone associated. With ICE, there would then be “Mom” and “ICE” both with the same cell phone 13

If you thought that good grades were all you needed to worry in order to walk that aisle and receive a diploma, think again. Many students over the years have had a nasty surprise waiting just days before graduation, when they’ve found they would need to attend summer school and can’t walk in commencement ceremonies. Seniors wouldn’t want to be caught in that situation, so know that there are a bunch of other requirements necessary to complete the entire graduation process. Here are a few tips to prevent you from not graduating. Maintaining your grades is the first step to grabbing that diploma. Achieving a grade point average, or GPA, that meets the school’s standards is something that seniors should try to keep now that final exams are near and grade tabulations will be made. “Senioritis is plaguing everyone right now,” says Kristen Laguaña, a senior from Academy of Our Lady of Guam. “Even I struggle with it, but regardless, everyone is just as motivated to get out of high school and graduate scotch-free.” Seniors should continue to work for their grades despite the fact that school is almost over. Study as much as you can for

your final exams because the reward at the end will be worth it. The fun does not stop here. Seniors need to be aware that there is a financial responsibility in the graduation process as well as things that need to get clearance. Several fees, including graduation fees for cap and gowns, need to be paid. Books that belong to the school need to be returned as well. If not, there is a high risk that you might not take the final exams. And with that, receiving your high school diploma might be harder to achieve. If you are in private school, and tuition for the month of May, or even for April, has not been paid, it needs to get done. It is best to contact your school’s main office to clarify what things need to be cleared and what are the other requirements needed for you to graduate. Don’t worry, do something. If you are worried about graduation, you should do something about it. Consult your teachers and your counselor to make sure you are doing everything to ensure you walk along with your classmates to be handed that diploma. If it is the grades, ask if there are assignments you can do for extra credit. Also, study hard so you do well on those final exams.

Have A Party Cookie Cutters In 1995 Mike and Alison Celentano moved to Columbus from New York City. Mike has a design background, working primarily with restaurants and other commercial interiors. Alison had a background in fashion retailing. In 1999 they did what many new parents do and took their son out for his first haircut. After seeing the crowded and noisy kids’ salon, they each walked out and collectively the business plan began being drafted in each of their minds. Snip Buzz Bangs was born. Mike designed the kid friendly interior and Alison managed the marketing and retail side of the business.

time or as Mike put it, “anytime a visit with grandma is upcoming.” Cookie Cutter’s employs stylists who not only know how to cut children’s hair, but stylists who enjoy cutting children’s hair. Each salon has DVDs for the children to watch and for older children, play station games. It is a fun experience for children of all ages, with balloons, bubble gum and maybe something from the treasure chest.

When they opened their first location, on the very first day they did 30 haircuts. Business grew swiftly after that and they began to expand the business. When the opportunity presented itself, they acquired the existing Cookie Cutter locations, their only direct competition and assumed the franchise name. Currently, they have seven locations in the Columbus area. For many people, these Central Ohio kid focused salons are a monthly destination, with one client driving from West Virginia on a fairly regular basis. A trip to Grandma’s also means a trip to Cookie Cutters. Cookie Cutter’s busiest times of year are naturally the holidays and back to school

Cookie Cutters also offers a number of specialized services including Glamour Parties, Locks for Love haircuts, and Baby’s 1st Haircuts. For the little divas and preteen princesses, the Glamour Party is a great way to celebrate. The salon opens for the party only and the girls enjoy doing their hair and make up, putting on a fashion show and the moms can enjoy the fun also.

Elegant Ice Creations When one thinks of the term “elegance,” chainsaws, sanders and chisels are probably not the first images to come to mind. But at Elegant Ice Creations, these are just a few of the tools used by owner and sculptor Greg Butauski to form beauty out of blocks of ice. Butauski, 1 of only 3 Certified Master Carvers in the United States, serves the Columbus area by providing a variety of ice sculptures ranging from ice luges and ice bars (an entire drinking bar made of ice) to table centerpieces and custom designs- which include more than 50 aquatic designs and over 75 bird and animal designs. One glance at the galleries of Butauski’s many works, and it is immediately evident that Greg is a major talent in the world in ice sculpting. Butauski started Elegant Ice Creations right out of college, and, after moving to Columbus and partnering with production manager Trey Justice, Greg attended the 2002 Winter Olympics at Salt Lake City as captain of Team USA and won the World

Ice Art Championships in 2005 as a member of Team Ohio. “It’s a lifelong passion. It’s always been my number one medium,” says Butauski, whose services also provide wood and sand sculptures. “About 70% of the business is ice sculptures,” Greg says. “ And of the ice sculptures, about 40% is for weddings, country clubs, hotels, and winter festivals.” Having been an enthusiast since first using a chainsaw in college, Greg says that the entire sculpting process is something he continues to enjoy more and more. “I love the fact that once you’ve purchased one sculpture, then you’ve got to get another one,” says Butauski. “It’s a repeat business.” For more information on Elegant Ice Creations and to place your own order form visit eleganticecreations.com 713 Harmon Plaza Columbus OH, 43223 614.449.8770 614.449.1599

Summer Activities For Children Summer Camp Fun The count down has begun, the whispers are in everyone’s ear, summer is just around the corner and that means: School is out! Parents of children of all ages are scrambling to decide what to do with their children for the summer. While trips to the swimming pool, weekend getaways and summer vacations will fill some of the time, nine weeks is a long time to be completely unstructured. Many parents also share the HUB at Cypress Wesleyan Church’s thoughts that “summertime should be filled with sun and fresh air, making new friends, learning new skills, and exploring creativity, not wasting away indoors watching TV and playing video games day after day.” While that may be true, many parents struggle with exactly how to accomplish that goal. Picking the right camp or mix of camps can be a daunting task. Keeping some of this advice in mind, should make the process a bit easier. Locally there are so many summer camps offered that the variety and level of choice can make camp selection a dizzying task. There are summer fun based programs, sports camps and clinics, art camps, music camps, academic camps and much much more. Many camps offer a blend or a variety of options, mixing academics, arts and crafts, and fun. Stop and consider for a moment that “studies show that children lose 30 to 60% of what they learn during the school year over the summer. An academic summer camp helps children keep their edge and stay ready for the academic year to come,” Dee James, director of the Mansion Day school explained. Use your child’s current teacher as resource. Ask the teacher what areas he or she feels your child could use additional help in or ask the teacher what activities your child seems to like the most. This knowledge will help focus the summer camp search. If your child is truly struggling in a particular subject focus the summer camp search along

or sister’s camp. For example, many parent’s enjoy the ambiance of the coffee shop located next to the David Myers Art Gallery, while their budding Picasso focuses on self expression through their artwork; truly a win-win for everyone.

those lines. If your child is doing well, then a more holistic or fun based camp might be the best approach. Another important consideration when selecting a camp or camps is what are your child’s friends doing for the summer. Attending camp with a friend often smoothes the transition, eases any separation anxiety and makes for a more enjoyable camp experience and is a car pooling opportunity, especially if there are other children and their schedules to consider. Many moms and dads end up feeling like a taxi service and there is nothing fun about that. The location of the summer camp is also another important consideration. Is it located close to home or the office? Commuting time is a factor. If the camp is a half day and not very close to home are their other attractions in the area near the camp, which might be of interest? This is especially important if there are younger children, who might not enjoy being in the car for the bulk of day, driving back and forth to big brother

21

At first glance, the goal of the camp in questions might seem very obvious. Soccer camp should teach the children the fundamentals of the sport, but sometimes it is the life lessons associated with the camp, which will have the most lasting impression. Joan Promen, of Bookmark Farms, says, “When parents ask why horseback riding camp or when they tell me they are weighing horseback riding camp versus soccer camp, I explain that the understanding that comes from working with the animals, the responsibly, can lead children to be empathic towards animals and from there that empathy can move into environmental awareness and can lead them to make some valuable connections.” Those connections can be life lessons, which children will truly benefit from. So whether it is art camp, modeling camp, horseback riding, music camp, sports clinics or an academic program, selecting the best camp for your child may take some time and some careful consideration but the lessons will prove invaluable and hopefully the camps will keep the children busy in a safe and educational environment, truly putting everyone at ease. So before summer is here, start planning for a summer filled with fun, learning, friends and much more. The key is to focus on what works for your child and what works for your family and what sounds like fun!

These sessions are designed to help the students prepare a theater resume, prepare for auditions and other higherlevel skills. This year, there is the addition of a special session with the formation of the first children’s choir in Hilliard. “In music the tempo marking ‘Allegro’ at the very beginning of a piece is an Italian adverb that instructs the musicians, ‘To be played in a quick and lively manner. ’Quick and lively, just like lessons should be.” At Allegro Studios the focus is on providing the best music education, with innovative and proven methods and to inspire a love for music.

Summer Activities For Children Bookmark Farms Summer is a time for children to take a break from school and indulge in something that they are passionate about or learn a new skill. At Bookmark Farms they can do both. Whether attending the 2008 Horse Lover’s Day Camp or the brand new one week only Farm Adventure Day Camp for Boys Joan Promen with Bookmark Farms thinks children can learn so very much while down on the farm. “When parents ask why horseback riding camp or when they tell me they are weighing horseback riding camp versus soccer camp,” she tells them, “the understanding that comes from working with the animals, the responsibility, can lead children to be empathic towards animals and from there that empathy can move into environmental awareness and can lead them to make some valuable connections.” The horseback riding camps focus on barn safety, private and group lessons, educational and entertaining videos, playtime with barn animals, and horse related games and crafts for the younger

campers, while older campers will focus on private and group lessons, trainer demonstrations, understanding horse psychology, grooming equipment care and stable cleaning. During the week long Farm Adventure camp boys will focus on treasure hunting, obstacle course work, horseback riding, fishing, kite making, and much more.

Kids & Horses - Benefits of Horsebackriding on Kids

Since the age of three and her first pony ride, Joan Promen has loved horses. As one of the leading hunter-jumper trainers in Central Ohio for over 35 years, she continues to share her love of horses with others by teaching lessons, boarding horses, helping others purchase horses and taking students to horse shows. Joan developed her camp program for children 20 years ago. Bookmark Farms is located about 15 minutes east of New Albany, a half mile east of Lynd’s Fruit Farm. In addition to the summer camps, Bookmark Farms offers private instruction for children and adults, horse boarding, attendance at horse shows, and much more. At Bookmark Farms, the focus is on bringing people and horses together.

Myers explained his teaching and instructional philosophy by saying, “successful musicians do not walk on stage and perform thinking about how the audience would like to see them perform. They trust their instincts and perform the way they feel, expressing what it is they have to share. At David Myers Art Studio & Galleries, artists learn to feel fundamentally empowered to trust their own unique gifts and follow their instincts to express their passion. ” That empowerment and trust is the true masterpiece. Summer Activities For Children The Hub As summer quickly approaches, many parents are wondering what to do with their school aged children during the time school is not in session. At Cypress Wesleyan Church, they think “Summer time should be filled with sun and fresh air, making new friends, learning new skills, and exploring creativity, NOT wasting away indoors watching TV and playing video games day after day.” So for the second summer in a row, they are pleased to host THE HUB on their campus. The HUB is a series of day camps, which focus on providing the children with engaging, exciting, educational experiences in everyway. These camps are designed to be fun and inspiring for the campers and to put parent’s minds at ease, the parents can rest easy knowing that their child is in a safe environment and learning, while having a great time.

Boys and Girls’ Golf Camp and Art Adventure Camp. These camps are for varying lengths of time and offer a wide range of activities and learning opportunities. Before and after care opportunities are available thru the Cypress Christian School Summer Day Camp Program, on a space available basis, more information is available by contacting the school directly. Many summer camps require payment in full at the time of registration; The Hub requires a $25 deposit per camp at the time of registration. The full camp fee, less the deposit, is due by June 1, 2008. The Hub does offer a discount if the camper enrolls in more than two camps or if there are multiple children from the same family unit enrolling in the same camp. In addition to the camps and clinics being offered, The Hub is also offering a variety of family outings and some overnight camps for older elementary, middle and high school students.

Summer Activities For Children Mansion Day School Mansion Day School is a private preschool through fifth grade school located near Franklin Park Conservatory. The focus at Mansion Day School is on all phases of student development; intellectual, social, emotional, physical and ethical. The highly trained faculty educates students in a rigorous academic curriculum focusing on developing the skills required to succeed in contemporary education. Mansion Day School is a member of OAIS (Ohio Association of Independent Schools.) During the summer, Mansion Day School offers a Summer Camp program, which blends morning academic studies with all the fun that is summer. The program is open from 7 am through 6 pm, with the camp day running from 9 am through 3 pm. This year the theme for the Summer Camp program will be traveling the world. The campers will visit a new country each week. In addition to academic studies the students will also have the opportunity for other enrichment activities, including multicultural storytellers, musicians, dancers, and country specific visitors. While academics is a strong focus of the Mansion Day School’s summer camp, the students will still have the opportunity to experience many summer activities, such as swimming lessons, water days on the school grounds, field trips. Some of the field trips will include ice skating, roller skating, bowling, movies, horse back riding and much more. Even though the camp portion of the program is over at 3 pm, stimulating enrichment activities such as sewing, sign language, soccer, Spanish language instructions, gymnastics, science explorations and more keep the campers engaged and busy until the day ends. “Studies show that children lose 30 to 60% of what they learn during the school year over the summer. A summer camp that includes academics helps children keep retain what they’ve learned during the school year and stay ready for the upcoming academic year to come,” Dee James, Director of Mansion Day school ColumbusLivingMag.com

Place a slice of cheese on the bottom portion of each bun, place the burger on top of the cheese, then top the cheese with a slice of ham and another slice of cheese, and finally, the pickle slices. Place the tops of the bun over the pickles, wrap the burgers in aluminum foil, and place them on the grill. Using a heavy pan or a brick wrapped in foil, press down on the burgers for about 30 seconds to 1 minute. Lower the lid on the grill and continue grilling for 1 to 2 minutes, or until the cheese has melted and the bun has become pressed and firm.

How Your Grip Effects Ball Flight By: Bobby Eldridge There are many different opinions on how to grip a golf club, but very few instructors tell you WHY you should grip the club a certain way. The reason that the grip is SO important is because it is the only part of your body that controls the clubface, your hands. If you have a tendency to slice the golf ball, try this: Move both hands to the right so you can see one or two knuckles (top knuckles) of the left hand. The most important part of placing your grip is to make sure both palms are facing each other. So adjust the left hand, and then adjust the right hand so that your right palm is facing the left palm. - Strong Grip

If you have a tendency to hook the golf ball, move both hands towards the left (palms facing), and you should see no knuckles on your left hand. - Weak Grip When I mention the knuckles that I have been referring to, here’s what I mean. 1. After you have addressed the golf ball and you look down at your hands from the address position. 2. You should look at your left hand to see if you can see any knuckles. Now let’s talk about grip pressure. Tip: The tighter you grip the golf club; the more the golf ball has a tendency to go off to the right. The looser you grip the golf club; the tendency will be for the golf ball to go off to the left. Most of the time when I am giving a golf lesson, I can see the whites of my student’s knuckles because they are gripping the golf club so tight. This is incorrect! Hall of Fame golfer Sam Snead once said “Hold the club as if you are holding a bird in your hands.” Another quote that I once heard is that you should grip the club like you were holding a tube of toothpaste. Now... I want to share a little bit about my experience at the Phoenix open, and give you some predictions. Every year, I take some of my clients to the Phoenix Open, and this past weekend I was really impressed with J.B.Holmes. However, I am making a 2006 prediction - that I made during the Hawaiian Open...Camilo Villegas is my pick for Rookie Of The Year...He is the 2006 REAL DEAL...Let’s follow him in 06.

Life’s Milestones & Your Life Insurance Maintaining a life insurance policy that meets your coverage goals is a lifelong process. You may need to give your policy extra consideration in the event of any of the following: If you get married, you may want to update your beneficiary list to include your new spouse, as well as correct your policy to reflect a name change, if applicable. As your family grows, be sure to update your beneficiary list. Owning your own home is an unbeatable feeling, but extra coverage may be necessary to help ensure mortgage requirements continue to be met. If you leave your old job to start your own business, make sure that you do not sustain a significant loss in coverage when you leave your employer’s benefit plan. If you change jobs, pay attention to the benefits offered by your new employer. Coverage amounts will often vary greatly from employer to employer, and this must be factored into your personal policy. Perhaps one of the most secure feelings in life is knowing you have covered your

bases and are prepared for whatever may happen. Through annual reviews, you can plan for coverage that will provide for your loved ones and help ensure financial goals and obligations will be met. As you approach each one of life’s many milestones, you will find additional consideration and planning are well worth the effort.

Smart Money Creating a Personal Safety Net The disappearance of some traditional safety nets from both the public and private sectors has forced many Americans to realize the importance of creating their own personal safety net. Financial products can be complicated, however, and a financial services representative can help you navigate through the maze of choices in order to pick the most appropriate ones. Many people enter this process with feelings of unease, worry or concern, but this is generally replaced by positive feelings of security, relief and satisfaction immediately following meetings with a financial services representative. Constructing a personal safety net requires thinking about possible life events that could trigger financial adversity and taking the requisite steps to prepare for them. While it is impossible to predict all of life’s uncertainties, it’s possible to group them into a few common categories. They include: •

Morbidity Risk – In our lowsavings, high-debt society, medical expenses for an acute injury or illness fall outside the reach of many Americans. Moreover, a chronic disability requiring long-term care or absence from work could be financially devastating. There are many insurance solutions that can help defray the cost of medical and dental emergencies. Mortality Risk – Without life insurance, the premature death of a breadwinner can be financially devastating. However, in 2004, one third of adults carried no life insurance. Regardless of your current financial situation, life insurance should be an integral part of your personal safety net.

Longevity Risk – Most insurers offer solutions to help individuals maintain an income stream after they retire. Deferred annuities, for example, enable people to save on a tax-deferred basis for use down the road. Immediate annuities, on the other hand, allow an individual to immediately receive a guaranteed stream of income for as long as he or she lives.

Now, more than ever, insurers are in the position to help offset the erosion of traditional social support structures by leveraging vast asset pools and economies of scale. A financial safety net is only as strong as the company that provides it. Individuals should make sure that they are working with a strong, stable insurer that can guarantee coverage when it counts – for both the possibilities and uncertainties you may face throughout your life – the “ifs” in life.

10 Money-Saving Tips Simple Ways Everyone can save Money! 1. If you have your haircut every 3 weeks, try going 4 or 5 weeks in between haircuts. If you pay $10 for a haircut, you could save $70 a year by having a cut every 5 weeks instead of 3. 2. Buy only generic basic types of cold cereal, if your family must have it. With fall and cooler weather coming, it’s a good idea to introduce hot cereal. It’s usually the best buy and by using the microwave oven to prepare, it is almost as quick to fix as cold cereal. 3. If you have a cell phone, don’t buy the accessories at the “cell phone store”. Check out prices at local discount stores first. 4. Quit smoking. Need we say more?

5. In some states, children’s immunizations are offered free at local health clinics. Call the local health department to inquire. 6. Wash, wax and detail your own vehicle instead of paying someone else to do it. 7. Put a little money aside every month in order to pay your car and homeowners insurance annually. Most insurers charge a fee (sometimes hefty!) for paying monthly. You’ll also avoid those mid-year increases. 8. When making instant pudding from a box, add an extra cup of milk. The pudding “sets up” the same and tastes the same, but you have one more cup. You might want to experiment with adding a little more. And of course, another money-saver is to use reconstituted dry milk. 9. Meat prices are soaring, so plan to have a meat-less meal at least twice a week. Substitute an egg or pasta dish. Or maybe canned tuna or salmon. 10. If you love magazines, try sharing with a friend. Each of you subscribe to a different magazine, when you’re finished reading, swap. “Beware of little expenses; a small leak will sink a great ship.” –Benjamin Franklin 49

Mature Living Has ‘50’ Become the New ‘30’? Frank Rosci

Why and how is this national phenomenon happening?

Young at heart: Quite literally, boomers feel better than ever. People these days are living longer than ever. And as they go through their longer, fuller, richer lives, they’re taking better care of themselves and aging gracefully, so much so that even at 50 years of age and older - once upon a time considered “over the hill” - many are more like 30-year-olds in their thinking, behavior, viewpoint, attitude and even physique.

“One of the most important reasons are lifestyle changes, including far fewer people smoking than before, and a greater emphasis on diet and exercise,” explained Hal Hockfield, M.D., an internist at Abington Memorial Hospital and a member of Abington Plaza Medical Associates.

These baby-boomers are practically as active as their younger counterparts - they can still do many of the physically demanding things that younger people do, and they remain committed to staying that way for as long as humanly possible.

“Everything has changed today. People are working longer, and thinking and dressing younger, staying involved in the things they love to do, and are more active overall,” he said.

are people who are 75 and 80 who are still working, keeping their bodies and minds active.” In his view, people age 55 today are the 40-year-olds of two decades ago, while those 75 now are the 55-year-olds of 20 years ago. “Nothing makes me happier than having an 85-year-old come to the office on the way to work,” said Hockfield, half of whose large patient population is made up of geriatrics. “If someone makes it to 70, chances are good that person will live to at least 85,” he added.

“They’re not retiring early as they did, for example, 20 years ago. People today don’t want to do that because they don’t want to turn into couch potatoes. There

Home & Garden Summer Home Remodeling Summer is the perfect time to tackle all of those must do home improvement projects. With the longer days and warm and sunny weekends, being a weekend do it yourselfer is easy as pie. Not the DIY type, not a problem, arranging home improvement projects is a snap. While many people focus their efforts on outdoor projects, the spring and summer months are also a great time to think about a variety of indoor projects. Spring Cleaning is a standard household rite of passage as the weather turns warmer. Why not this year, plan to clean and remodel that problem closet. There are many do it yourself closet systems on the market, which are easy to install and offer a great variety of storage options. Turn the mess into organizational success in a weekend or two. In the long run, the hours invested will pay big dividends once all the summer fun is in full swing, with an organized and remodeled closest, there will be no more lost time searching for that missing swimsuit or tennis racket. Another problem area is the garage. With the advent of summer, the garage can become overloaded with sports equipment, bikes, helmets, balls, toys and lawn chairs and much more. Investing a few hours now, to install storage shelves, cabinets, hooks and other organizations tools, will make for a more orderly and enjoyable summer. If organizational issues were addressed last season, then the spring and summer months can be the perfect time to tackle some indoor remodeling. Painting the interior of the house is another perfect home improvement task for spring and summer. The kids can spend a fair amount of time outside and away from the wet paint. Furthermore, windows can comfortably be raised making paint fumes a thing of the past. Crank up the stereo or listen to the singing birds as the walls of the house are transformed.

Summer is also a great time to do some outdoor updates. Having the house painted or the trim painted is always a great summer project. Calling a reputable house painter in the early spring means that even with possible weather delays,

Home & Garden Jones Topsoil It is spring and everyone is busy in their yards. Cleaning up after the long winter and the last bits of remaining fall leaves, which were buried under snow. Gardeners and homeowners all have their weed eaters and mowers cranked up and are prepping beds for spring planting. Take a deep breath anywhere around the city and the smell in the air is unmistakable, mulch. Unless of course it is mulch purchased and delivered by Jones Top Soil. “In addition to the obvious benefits of mulching,” says Jack Fink with Jones Top Soil, “when the hardwoods break down, they become amendments to the soil, further enriching it with organic matter. And the best part? Jones’ mulch doesn’t smell!” While many homeowners mulch seasonally, many overlook the importance

of the top layer of soil in their gardens and flower beds. According to Jack Fink, of Jones Topsoil in Columbus, “Once you have that layer of nutrient-rich soil, all you need to add is plants, water and mulch. Jones Topsoil offers an exclusive blend of soil, sand and naturally pasteurized compost that’s pulverized and sifted to create the perfect gardening soil. A quality topsoil will practically do the work for you,” says Fink. Quality top soil is important for plants, providing the correct amount of water retention and supporting the plants with the correct nutritional mix. Jones Top Soil has one of the largest fleets of trucks in Ohio, so they can deliver mulch and top soil, when you need it. in the retail experience; offering an amazing opportunity. We like to keep it simple any easy for the client, this should be the last counter you ever need to do with this kitchen, nothing is easier to maintain than granite. Fran personally loves marble tops and says with very little extra care they are wonderful, she has them in her kitchen heavy prep area and could not be happier.“Our Installation is the best says Bob. He should know, Bob stays involved till the job is done. We use a laser template for MEASURING counter tops, which allows us to take very specific measurements without the removal of existing counter tops. Affordable Granite understands how

delightful it is to have the work done and done right. We use a computer fabrication process, which ensures the best possible fit and fabrication of all counter tops and vanities. With most counter tops, Affordable Granite includes a free18 gage stainless steel sink; under mounted with a rounded edge to help prevent any chipping issues. We use a system that allows us to not drill into the stone for mounting keeping the integrity of your top. Recently Affordable granite has teamed up with Everpure and offer The Everpure water filtration systems, which can be installed at the same time as the counter tops and more important, save hundreds on bottled water and provide delicious healthy water. Home & Garden DeMarco Inc. DeMarco is the name that builders, architects and homeowners in the Columbus area associate with quality roofing. The company opened their doors to the Columbus community on South Front Street in 1986 and has been there ever since. Over these past 22 years the company has seen our city change but at DeMarco quality and service have always been their guiding principals. For a mid sized company DeMarco has a diversified and well respected team of leadership, management and skilled craftsmen. Their depth of knowledge in this trade allows them the unique ability to take part in any type of project they desire to undertake.

It is not often that you get a company that is interested in more than just the bottom line. DeMarco is a true friend and valued part of our community. They have demonstrated their desire to not only keep up with new roofing technologies but they keep the old historic aspects of the trade alive. This knowledge has saved historic structures that otherwise would be lost to the people of Columbus. A project that recently was added to their portfolio of community projects was assisting in saving the 1816 Richards House from the demolition block. DeMarco showed the City of Columbus that they want to keep our heritage and ColumbusLivingMag.com

history alive. The Richards House was originally known as the Dam Tender’s House at Griggs Reservoir. DeMarco received national attention from their fellow roofing contractors for this effort and sacrifice to our community by receiving the National Gold Circle Award from the National Roofing Contractors Association. DeMarco’s CEO Frank DeMatteo stated, “Our community needs to be protected and preserved and that is every person’s job. We live here and we want our grandchildren to be able to see our beautiful historical past. We want to do our part.” With action, words are put to the test and DeMarco has proven locally and nationally they are capable of completing what they set out to do. Your project is in the right hands with DeMarco. The company has a motto that sums up who they are: Protect your investment through quality roofing systems. DeMarco is a true cornerstone in our community.

Home & Garden Glass Block Warehouse: Amesbury Locca Amesbury Locca names Dynamic Energy Solutions, Inc. as their distributor in Ohio for their New Home Automation product line. Included in the new product line is the remote control entry door unlocking device called “Access”. “Now you can unlock your home’s door with the push of a button” says John Heisler, President of Dynamic Energy Solutions, Inc., the new distributor for the State of Ohio. “It works just like a car remote,” adds Heisler, “and I’ve never spoken to anyone who has one for his or her car, who wants to give it up. It’s a real convenience.” For security, the “Access” has a rolling code technology which changes the code after every use. There are over four billion (with a “B”) codes, so that there is virtually no chance of duplication. These products have been used in Europe for some years, but were introduced in the U.S. at the 2008 Home Builders’ Show in Florida in early February. The beauty of the “Access” is its ease of installation, and it is very affordable. There is a similar product available for larger installations, called “MULTI”, which can accommodate up to 999 locks, compared to the “Access”, which will handle up to 19. The “MULTI” is ideal for multifamily housing, office buildings, and even commercial buildings.

ColumbusLivingMag.com

These products work with most existing locks, so there is no need to buy new locksets, etc. An intercom system is also available, either as an independent unit, or as part of the keyless entry products. When used together, you can not only answer your door from any part of your home, patio, or yard (within 200 yards), but you can unlock your door for your visitor from wherever you are. The convenience of coming home with arms full of groceries, and not having to find your key, then put it in the lock (especially if it is dark) is great for everyone. It is even more helpful for people with handicaps, like diabetes, arthritis, or those with wheelchairs, etc. The products are A.D.A. compliant. When asked why she chose Dynamic Energy Solutions to be the distributor in Ohio, Amber Grayson, Senior Marketing Manager of Amesbury Locca said that, “The people at Dynamic Energy Solutions have been pioneering in alternative energy and energy efficiency products for several years. We are pleased that they feel that our products are “cutting edge”, and compatible with their other products.” Also, she stated “It’s also beneficial that they have a 62

related company, The Glass Block Warehouse, which is a licensed home improvement contractor, capable of installing our products, if needed.” For more information, and to order any of these products, contact John Heisler, II at The Glass Block Warehouse at 614-274-0700. Contractors, door installers, apartment owners may also contact John Heisler, Sr. at Dynamic Energy Solutions, Inc. at 614-276-1245. Both companies are located at 750 Kaderly Drive, on the West side of Columbus, Ohio 43228.
