COMMENCEMENT

OF THE CLASS OF 2023

PRESIDENT KWANG-WU KIM, THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES, AND THE FACULTY OF COLUMBIA COLLEGE CHICAGO ARE PROUD TO ANNOUNCE THE

COMMENCEMENT OF THE CLASS OF 2023

COVER IMAGE

CHARLES HELTER

Candidate for the degree of Bachelor of Arts, Filmmaking and Photography

“I was heavily inspired by the urban decay around my hometown and used it to push my early interest in short films and photography. After moving to Chicago for college, the city’s unique and varied architecture caught my eye at every turn. It’s structurally beautiful and I spent many hours during the pandemic photographing the city. Within my work, I strive to use unique and odd angles to create new ways to view the environment around me, creating new perspectives to take in the world from. I’ve furthered this idea by abstracting the architecture even more within Photoshop. I flip, copy, paste, and color all parts of the image in order to find the results I desire. These works are often described as alien, otherworldly, or reality-bending, but to me it’s still Chicago’s architecture, just shown in a new way for people to enjoy.”

LIFT EVERY VOICE AND SING STAR SPANGLED BANNER

O, say can you see, by the dawn’s early light, What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight, O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?

And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.

O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave

O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep, Where the foe’s haughty host in dread silence reposes, What is that which the breeze, o’er the towering steep, As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?

Now it catches the gleam of the morning’s first beam, In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:

‘Tis the star-spangled banner! O long may it wave

O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore

That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion

A home and a country should leave us no more?

Their blood has washed out their foul footstep’s pollution. No refuge could save the hireling and slave

From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave: And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave

O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

O! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand

Between their loved homes and the war’s desolation!

Blest with victory and peace, may the heaven-rescued land

Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation. Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,

And this be our motto: “In God is our trust.”

And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave

O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Lift every voice and sing, till earth and Heaven ring, Ring with the harmonies of liberty; Let our rejoicing rise, high as the listening skies, Let it resound loud as the rolling sea. Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us, Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us; Facing the rising sun of our new day begun, Let us march on till victory is won.

Stony the road we trod, bitter the chastening rod, Felt in the days when hope unborn had died; Yet with a steady beat, have not our weary feet, Come to the place for which our fathers sighed? We have come over a way that with tears has been watered, We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered; Out from the gloomy past, till now we stand at last Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.

God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, Thou who hast brought us thus far on the way; Thou who hast by Thy might, led us into the light, Keep us forever in the path, we pray.

Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee. Lest our hearts, drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee. Shadowed beneath Thy hand, may we forever stand, True to our God, true to our native land.

CANDIDATE FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF FINE ARTS IN CREATIVE WRITING WINNER OF THE 2023 ALLEN AND LYNN TURNER COMMENCEMENT POETRY COMPETITION feels like riding a bike down the gravel road between fields full of coneflower periwinkle, goldenrod grass, asters. Easy –though pedaling is hard teeth chattering rocks clanking against the metal bike frame and it’s four miles to return home.

Laying under a locust tree surprised by a sudden dangling inchworm a sticky memory sliding down on a brain-string making shoulders shiver shake.

Night noises

whispers and creaks still perceptible under cellos and piano buzzing from a boombox. Standing on hot asphalt during a summer storm refreshed by rain tingling before lightning streaks the clouds and running inside to wrap up in a beach towel fresh from the dryer. Fog the next morning, or the things hidden by it giants made of mud entirely imagined yet almost visible.

HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENTS

Each year, Columbia College Chicago confers honorary degrees on individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the arts, journalism and the media, education, politics, and the business world. Their professional accomplishments, creative vision, and social and political engagement truly embody the highest ideals of the college.

CHRISTOPHER N. JONES

TO BE HONORED SATURDAY, MAY 13, 10 A.M.

TO ADDRESS GRADUATING STUDENTS SATURDAY, MAY 13, 3 P.M.

Chris Jones has reviewed and commented on theatre, culture, the arts, politics, and entertainment for the Chicago Tribune for more than 20 years, publishing several thousand theatre reviews of both Chicago and Broadway shows and just as many stories and articles about the American theatre. More recently, Jones became editorial page editor at the Tribune, with responsibility both for editorials and the Opinion section. He is also the Broadway critic for the New York Daily News.

Prior to joining the staff of the Tribune, Jones served for many years as touring theatre critic for Variety, writing several hundred theatre reviews with a particular emphasis on pre-Broadway tryouts. He is the director of the National Critics Institute, a summer program for mid-career arts journalists specializing in film, music, theatre, and food.

Jones has twice served on the drama committee of the Pulitzer Prize, and his cultural criticism has appeared in the Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Washington Post, American Theatre magazine, and numerous other newspapers and magazines. For 25 years, he has chaired the committee that annually recommends a theatre to receive the Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre.

Jones is the author of Bigger, Brighter, Louder (University of Chicago Press), a history of Chicago theatre criticism, and Rise Up!: Broadway and American Society from ‘Angels in America’ to ‘Hamilton’ (Bloomsbury), a well-reviewed exploration of how theatre reflects the world at large.

For much of the 1980s Jones contributed film reviews, interviews, and reports for WCBEFM in Columbus, Ohio, and served as the long-time film critic for Columbus Alive. His numerous guest TV appearances range from E! The True Hollywood Story to Nightline with Ted Koppel. He was a longtime contributor to CBS-2 in Chicago and has been heard many times on National Public Radio, the BBC, and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. And he has beat-boxed with Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Jones is a former faculty member at Northern Illinois University, serving as an associate professor and as assistant chair of the School of Theatre and Dance. He was associate dean of the Theatre School at DePaul University, where he has been an adjunct professor for more than 20 years. In 2021, he was named a Fellow of the American Theatre. A native of Manchester, England, Jones earned a doctorate from The Ohio State University in 1989. He lives in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood with his wife, Gillian Darlow, and has two sons.

BOBBI WILSYN

TO BE HONORED SUNDAY, MAY 14, 10 A.M.

TO ADDRESS GRADUATING STUDENTS SUNDAY, MAY 14, 3 P.M.

The 2018 recipient of the Black Excellence Award for Outstanding Achievement in Jazz from the African American Arts Alliance of Chicago, Bobbi Wilsyn is a jazz, blues, and gospel singer; motivational speaker; and professor of instruction in music emerita at Columbia College Chicago. Starting as an adjunct instructor in Columbia’s music department in 1981, Wilsyn soon became a full-time faculty member. She was instrumental in the development of the contemporary voice curriculum and choral ensembles that are still an integral part of the music program. Under her aegis, the vocal division added jazz, blues, and gospel to the already well-established courses in popular singing styles. Wilsyn presented vocal masterclasses in those styles for the Jazz Institute’s Straight Ahead Jazz Camp and at the Conservatorio di Bari and the Conservatorio di Pescara. She retired as the music department’s Coordinator of Voice Studies in 2020.

Wilsyn was singing in church, doo-wopping in the neighborhood, and performing in school productions while growing up in Los Angeles, California. Upon her arrival in Chicago in the late 70’s with her show business mentor, Milt Trenier, Wilsyn began to entertain in jazz clubs, festivals, and cabarets and to sing jingles and record voice-overs. She then became the featured jazz-blues vocalist, singing the repertory of Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn, Stan Kenton, Jelly Roll Morton, and others, with the Chicago Jazz Ensemble then in residence at Columbia under the direction of the late William Russo. Performances with conductors Jon Faddis, Joe Lovano, R. Richard Dunscomb, and Orbert Davis and guest appearances with the Cerqua Rivera Dance Theatre offered more opportunities for concerts in the United States and abroad. Roles in musicals, including Sophisticated Ladies, Beehive, and It Ain’t Nothin’ but the Blues, and sharing stages with jazz/blues artists such as Kurt Elling, Corky Siegel, and the lategreats Gerald Wilson, Ramsey Lewis, Eldee Young, Johnny Frigo, and Joe Williams are a few of the highlights of her 50 years in entertainment.

Currently, Wilsyn is presenting motivational workshops, producing a new recording project, and performing her one-person shows in tribute to her idols Lena Horne, Nancy Wilson, and Nina Simone.

GRADUATION WITH ACADEMIC HONORS

Columbia College Chicago undergraduates who graduate with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.75 are recognized as having graduated with academic honors. Students with a 3.75–3.79 GPA graduate cum laude (“with honors”); students with a 3.80–3.89 GPA graduate magna cum laude (“with high honors”); and students with a 3.90–4.00 GPA graduate summa cum laude (“with highest honors”). These students wear a gold tassel on their mortarboards at Commencement, and their names are listed with an asterisk in the program.

HONORS PROGRAM GRADUATES

The following 2023 graduates of Columbia’s undergraduate Honors Program have successfully completed 15 credits of Honors coursework in the Liberal Arts and Sciences Core Curriculum and have maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher over the course of their college career. At Commencement, Honors Program graduates wear a gold Honors stole on which is embroidered the college seal.

THE CUSTOMS AND SYMBOLISM OF COMMENCEMENT

ACADEMIC REGALIA

The customs governing the wearing of regalia at academic convocations such as this weekend’s Commencement exercises have their origins in the patterns of dress of Roman Catholic clergy-scholars in the universities of 12th- and 13th-century Western Europe. As with all such “invented traditions,” which appear fixed and unchanging when they are anything but, they have evolved over time and within cultures, resulting in a range of national and institutional variants and adaptations. The standard protocol for academic dress at U.S. higher education institutions is set out in the American Council on Education’s Academic Costume Code (1986).

What follows is a summary of the more prominent elements of the regalia that will be worn at these ceremonies by students, faculty, members of the administration, trustees, and guests. Through color schemes and other design features, the three garments that make up the regalia—the robe or gown, the hood worn around the neck, and the cap or tam—visually represent the highest degree earned by the wearer, the institution that conferred it, and the academic discipline in which it was granted.

THE HOOD

The core garment is black, but it is lined in satin in the color(s) of the institution that conferred the degree, and edged in velvet in the color designated for the academic discipline in which the degree was granted. Thus, at this weekend’s Commencement, candidates for master’s degrees will wear hoods with a periwinkle and grey lining— the colors registered by Columbia as its official colors—and edged with the color appropriate to the degree field:

• Master of Arts: white

• Master of Arts Management: drab

• Master of Fine Arts: dark brown

Most U.S. institutions of higher learning, including Columbia, dispense with the hooding of bachelor’s degree candidates at Commencement, although bachelor’s degree holders will wear a bachelor’s hood. (The width of the edging and the length of the hood indicate the type of degree conferred; the longer the hood and the wider the edging, the more advanced the degree.)

THE GOWN

Academic gowns customarily are black, although some U.S. institutions have created their own doctoral robes with more colorful designs. (At this weekend’s Commencement, master’s degree candidates will wear silver-gray gowns.) The gowns of bachelor’s and master’s degree holders are untrimmed. The gowns of doctoral degree holders have velvet trimming down the front and three large velvet bars across both sleeves. The velvet features ordinarily are black but may be in the color designated for the academic discipline in which the degree was conferred.

THE CAP

The most familiar type of academic headgear is the square mortarboard or cap; some doctoral degree holders wear a soft tam instead. All headgear comes with a tassel, usually black, although Columbia’s graduating students wear caps with either gold (for honors graduates) or silver tassels. The custom, which Columbia observes, of having degree recipients move their tassels from the right to the left side of their caps at the conclusion of the degree conferral sequence is of relatively recent origin.

THE COLLEGE MACE AND PRESIDENTIAL MEDALLION

The college mace, which is carried into the Commencement ceremony by the chief faculty marshal, represents the collective authority of the college’s faculty. The ceremony does not officially begin until the mace is placed in its stand on the stage. Columbia’s mace is a three-dimensional representation of the college seal; the design symbolically depicts light breaking out into the world.

The medallion worn by the president, which incorporates the college seal, represents the authority vested in the president by the Board of Trustees. The medallion’s custom-designed chain is imprinted with the thumbprints of individual students, faculty, and staff, thereby symbolically honoring the standing of those constituencies within the college community.

The college mace and the presidential medallion were designed and created by sculptor and part-time faculty member Miklos P. Simon. The following faculty members will serve as chief faculty marshals and mace bearers at the 2023 Commencement exercises:

• Saturday, 10 a.m.: Hilary Sarat-St Peter, Associate Professor, English and Creative Writing

• Saturday, 3 p.m.: Monique Maye, Professor of Instruction, Business and Entrepreneurship

• Sunday, 10 a.m.: Kristin Pichaske, Associate Chair, Cinema and Television Arts

• Sunday, 3 p.m.: Janell Baxter, Associate Professor, Interactive Arts and Media
