Our American Sign Language (ASL) program is designed to give you the linguistic skills and certification to connect with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities. If you want to master a new language while serving a minority community through interpretation, this is the program for you. You’ll complete your degree with hands-on experiential classes, multicultural interpreting, and creative performance. The best part? You’ll learn from faculty members who are internationally known in the ASL community. All ASL classes are taught exclusively by Deaf instructors for a truly immersive experience. You’ll be studying in the heart of Chicago’s creative economy. The campus is surrounded by many of the city’s key cultural institutions and entertainment venues that often serve as an extension of your classroom.

FACULTY SPOTLIGHT

PETER COOK Associate Professor Peter Cook has traveled the world, leading workshops on ASL poetry and storytelling. An internationally recognized storyteller and leading performer in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community, Peter has taught at Columbia since 1993 and is the American Sign Language Department Chair.

CHRISTINA STEVENS ’10 The power of actor and ASL interpreter Christina Stevens is in her hands. The ASL-English Interpretation grad travels the country entertaining deaf and hearing students alike. She is currently serving on the National Board of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) as the Region 1 representative.
