COLUMBIA CORE CURRICULUM Required for all students
COLUMBIA CORE CURRICULUM
CREATIVITY IN CONTEXT The Columbia Core is our general education core curriculum. It blends the best of what Columbia has to offer: arts and media training; entrepreneurial, marketing, and business skills; technological literacy; and a broad foundation in analytical thinking. Concepts and themes of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) are infused throughout. Through your classes in the Columbia Core, you’ll engage with Chicago’s cultural, economic, and social vibrancy. You’ll also develop foundational skills and knowledge while learning from faculty across the entire college.
THE COLUMBIA CORE IS DIVIDED INTO TWO AREAS: The Columbia Experience Contains courses emphasizing business, technology, and communication as well as connections to Chicago and creative practices. Big Chicago (First-Semester Experience) Connect with Chicago in fundamental ways while working with a cohort of student peers — led by some of Columbia’s top scholars and professionals. Creative Communities Explore creativity from multidimensional perspectives, with an intentional focus on strategies and skills for working with interdisciplinary collaborators. Innovation and Impact Learn the business, technological, and entrepreneurial skills necessary to create a portfolio that demonstrates your professional preparedness and adaptability. Essential Liberal Arts and Sciences Includes writing and rhetoric, history and social science, humanities, literature, math, and science. During your time at Columbia, you’ll work with your academic advisor to make sure you’re fulfilling the necessary Columbia Core requirements.
