SHAPE WHAT’S NEXT IN LITERATURE Creative careers are made here. At Columbia College Chicago, you’ll explore the depths of literary history and the modern techniques writers across many disciplines use to capture the world around us. The English and Creative Writing Department offers three distinct majors—Creative Writing (BA), Cultural Studies (BA), and English (BA), in addition to three minors. As a student, you’ll join other emerging writers and hone your craft through peer-to-peer workshops, portfolio development, and professional internships. A vibrant literary scene, Chicago is alive with diverse storytellers and creative changemakers. The campus is surrounded by many of the city’s key cultural institutions and entertainment venues that often serve as an extension of your classroom.
AT COLUMBIA, YOU CAN: Choose a concentration in fiction, nonfiction or poetry within the Creative Writing program. That way you focus on the genre that suits your style and interests. Immerse yourself in the Cultural Studies program with the option to study abroad and learn about different cultures around the world. JIM DeROGATIS DeRogatis is a music critic, journalist, and associate professor of English and Creative Writing. Over the last three decades, DeRogatis has shared his sonic views and covered music news for Chicago Sun-Times, Spin, Guitar World, GQ, The New Yorker, and WBEZ public radio.
FACULTY SPOTLIGHT
CM BURROUGHS CM Burroughs is a rising star in contemporary poetry. Her first collection, The Vital System (Tupelo Press, 2012) earned her fellowships from Yaddo, The MacDowell Colony, and the Cave Canem Foundation. Her second book, Master Suffering (2021), was nominated for a National Book Award.
NOTABLE ALUM
TOYA WOLFE MFA ’15 Wolfe is the recipient of various literary awards for her short stories, which have appeared in African Voices, Chicago Journal, and Chicago Reader. Wolfe credits the faculty, who are working artists and experts in their field, as the biggest draw to the program. Last Summer on State Street is her debut novel.
