SHAPE WHAT’S NEXT IN THE HUMANITIES Creative careers are made here. The program’s interdisciplinary curriculum will provide you with a broad and deep understanding of the humanities and social sciences. You will develop your communicative, collaborative, and analytical skills while expanding your knowledge of yourself and the world around you. Humanities, History, and Social Sciences also emphasizes understanding identity and culture, which can translate to increased success in any career path. You’ll get the chance to explore your interests in the humanities by selecting one of six minors and an undergraduate major in Cultural Studies.
AT COLUMBIA, YOU CAN: Build a foundation of study in Liberal Arts and Sciences and pursue a career in a variety of fields including journalism, documentary film, and more. Work with experts in the field who will guide you beyond the classroom and help you develop critical problem-solving skills in the real world. Collaborate with other creatives who are studying other disciplines such as fashion, film, and photography and learn from each other’s diverse interests. Immerse yourself in the Cultural Studies undergraduate major with the option to study abroad in Latin America and learn about the vibrant culture, arts, and architecture of Argentina.

RICHARD KING Dr. King is the department chair of Humanities, History, and Social Sciences. He teaches classes in its Cultural Studies major. His scholarship concentrates on questions of cultural difference and social power. Much of it endeavors to understand race, gender, and sexuality in popular culture.

RAMI GABRIEL Rami Gabriel is an associate professor of Psychology and publishes research on the philosophy of psychology, affective neuroscience, and consciousness studies. Gabriel co-authored The Emotional Mind: The Affective Roots of Culture and Cognition, and in 2023, published his third book, A Suspicious Science.

GABRIELA DÍAZ DE SABATÉS Dr. Díaz de Sabatés research interests center on life narratives, gender, race, ethnicity, immigration, and Latin-American feminisms from an intersectional approach. During her tenure as assistant professor, Dr. Díaz de Sabatés created Columbia’s popular study abroad program in Latin America.
