SHAPE WHAT’S NEXT IN SCIENCE AND MATH Creative careers are made here. There is an intrinsic reliance on science and mathematics as humans coexist with the natural world around us. The careful study of our environment in relation to sustainability is an ever-present demand in the modern world. Become a steward of the planet and learn the wide variety of advances in science and mathematics, their potential applications, and their implications for public policy. Columbia offers an undergraduate major in Environmental and Sustainability Studies along with four minors in Biology, Environmental Studies, Health and Wellness, and Mathematics.
AT COLUMBIA, YOU CAN: Build a foundation of study in Liberal Arts and Sciences and pursue a career in a variety of fields including sustainable fashion, design, environmental journalism, documentary film, and more. Work with experts in the field who will guide you beyond the classroom and help you develop critical problem-solving skills in the real world. Collaborate with other creatives who are studying other disciplines such as fashion, film, and photography and learn from each other’s diverse interests. DERICK D. JONES, JR. Derick D. Jones, Jr. is chartering their own way in the field of science as an assistant professor of Chemistry at Columbia College. They have four scientific publications in highly revered science journals and have received numerous awards as an accomplished STEM advocate for underrepresented communities.

SPENCER HELLERT Hellert strongly believes science is tied to the arts — especially in paleontology and geology, where drawing, painting, illustrating, and 3D-rendering are essential to research. As an assistant professor at Columbia College, Hellert makes sure her students know all the possible STEM career opportunities for creatives.

ELIZABETH C. DAVIS-BERG Davis-Berg is a professor of Biology and teaches a variety of classes including animal behavior, ecology, evolution of sex, and general zoology. Her research focuses on invertebrate biomechanics, gastropod biodiversity, and pedagogy.
