BIOS

Daniela Aranda is a current senior majoring in Dance along with a minor in Vocal Performance at Columbia College Chicago. Aranda’s early dance training consisted of Mexican folk style, which progressed into competitive dance at Eric Solorio Academy. Daniela’s passion as an interdisciplinary artist continues to grow at Columbia, where her exploration is inspired by her Mexican culture. Daniela is eager to continue personal artistic development through multiple creative lenses after graduation.

Amaya Arroyo was born in Columbus, Ohio and began her dance training at the age of 13 years old. Amaya was a founding member of Dance ELITE Performance Academy where she trained under the direction of Samara Tillman, in Modern, Ballet, Contemporary, Jazz, and Hip Hop techniques. Amaya has worked with artists such as Ron De Jesus, Crystal Michelle Perkins, Wade Schaaf, and many more. Amaya is a recent graduate from Columbia College Chicago earning her BA in Dance. Amaya is an Emerging Artist at the South Chicago Dance Theatre under the executive artistic direction of Kia S. Smith.

Milenka Aurelio, a Chicago native, is a first year BFA Dance Student at Columbia College Chicago. Milenka has been dancing for about eight years and graduated from the Chicago High School for the Arts prior to college. Milenka is working to graduate and go into choreographing works and teaching dance.

Isabel Bastardo is a Junior pursuing a Dance and Arts Management double major from Milwaukee, WI. She has been dancing for 12 years, training primarily in Jazz and Contemporary under the direction of Gina Laurenzi. Isabel’s work spans from concert dance to Musical Theatre. She aims to continue performing and researching movement with a focus on Latin social dance.

Rylee Binkley is a sophomore Dance major here at Columbia College Chicago. Originally from Plainfield, Illinois, Rylee came to the city to study Film and changed to a Dance major this fall semester. This year has been Rylee’s first time receiving professional training and she can’t wait to show you how much she has improved so far!

Carissa Bracken is a senior this semester at Columbia College Chicago earning her bachelors degree in Dance and minor in Fashion Styling. She has been dancing since she was 4 years old and loves teaching, collaborating, and choreography. After school she plans to continue teaching and traveling and eventually further her education in graduate school.

When Jocelyn Carrigan was five years old, her mother enrolled her in Ballet and Tap classes at her local dance studio, Darla’s Dance Center, as a way to help Jocelyn become more physically expressive. What started as a form of therapy quickly turned into passion and after three years taking classes in various styles of dance, Jocelyn joined Impact Dance Studio’s competitive teams where she’s been dancing since 2016. Jocelyn’s currently a senior in high school and is planning on attending Columbia College next fall to work towards achieving a B.A. in dance!

Courtney Cooper is a gifted dancer from Washington, DC with over six years of training in Classical Ballet, Modern, Contemporary, Jazz, Hip Hop, and West African. Courtney is a freshman attending Columbia College Chicago pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance. Courtney is a dynamic talent, with a love for people and exploring how her energy and ambition can uplift and positively influence humanity and culture. Courtney is a bold artist with passion, enthusiasm, and a fierce curiosity for life and art.

Violet Czerwinski is from Fox Lake, Illinois. She is pursuing a BFA in Dance and is in her sophomore year at Columbia College Chicago. She trained in various styles, was on the competitive team at her studio, and helped assist teaching classes for 15+ years. Violet is currently working towards her career goals of performing and choreographing.

Sophie Daker is a freshman here at Columbia College Chicago! She has been dancing for 16 years training in various styles growing up. Sophie has passion for challenging work and performance with the influence of Contemporary, Jazz, and Modern forms.

Taraja Mumbeja Echols is a graduate from Columbia College Chicago with a BA in Dance and minor in Hip Hop Studies. Taraja is a young and growing artist making her mark in the Chicago scene as a community organizer, dancer, model and entrepreneur. Recently, Taraja organized and hosted an all women’s dance battle, Queen Sh!t Vol.1, to give recognition and a safe space to women and femmes involved in the street dance scene and is working to create more spaces. Previously she’s worked with local Chicago artist, T.L. Williams, TStar Verse, Lester Ray, Christian JaLon, Kanye West and toured with dance company Hiplet as well as appeared in Mielle Organics’ commercial. She is now working with Kuumba Lynx and BraveSoul Movement as well as venturing into fashion and creating her own brand.

My name is Mia Garza. I am from Chicago, Illinois. I got my training from Hubbard Street Dance Chicago’s Youth Department/Ensemble and danced with Move Me Soul for a number of years. I attended Columbia College for a few semesters and have been a part of many student and faculty pieces throughout my dance career.

Kayla Hansen is a dancer and choreographer born and raised on the Northside of Chicago. Hansen’s early training comes from Rhoads Academy of Dance, Senn Arts Dance Company, and Southport Performing Arts Conservatory. Kayla has also worked with various companies including Gus Giordano, Joel Hall Dance Center, Still Inspired, Joffrey Ballet, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, and Picture Us Different. Kayla has choreographed many works, which have been showcased at the Athenaeum Theatre, the Dance Center of Columbia College Chicago, The Edge Theater and other venues. Kayla is currently a junior BFA Dance major and Education minor at Columbia College Chicago.

Maliaka Hughes was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. As a multifaceted artist she has a passion in a multitude of different fields, but as a senior at Columbia College Chicago, she is dedicating her focus to dance. Her passion for performance intersects through all her studies and she’s excited to explore more postgraduation.

Najah Iman is a dedicated mover who’s been dancing for about 4-5 years now. With a background in musical theater, Najah’s first dance performance was at Columbia College Chicago’s, Student Performance Night in Fall 2023. She is so excited for more performance opportunities!

Lydia Jacobson formed her dance career at 11 years old at Beth Fowler School of Dance in Genoa, Illinois. Commuting between her hometown of DeKalb, she trained in techniques such as Ballet (both on and off pointe), Jazz, Jazz-Funk, Hip Hop, Contemporary, and Lyrical. Lydia furthered her dance training in Modern, West African, House, Breaking, and Improvisation techniques here at Columbia. Her composition is rooted in the natural emotional reactions of her dancers, instant composition, and imitation of the world around us. Lydia wishes to share deeper emotional connections with audiences by tugging on their heartstrings.

Konnie Kakridas was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. She is known for her narrative and heartfelt work as she is establishing herself as a figure in the world of dance. Konnie discovered her passion for dance at an early age studying at Forevermore Dance & Theatre Arts in Chicago, Illinois and is currently embarking on a creative journey studying at Columbia College Chicago to earn her BFA in Dance in the spring of 2025. Studying amongst Kerrie Grace, Bevara Anderson, Darrell Jones, Carrie Hanson, and many more, Konnie has been able to spend her time indulging the ideologies and vocabulary these teachers have been able to provide her with in her own choreography and performance opportunities.

Joey Martinez is a choreographer and dance educator from suburban Illinois, now residing in Chicago. Beginning their choreographic journey at age 13, they aim to provide a space for artists to freely experience emotions without the weight of an authoritarian, capitalist society surrounding them. In their work throughout the city, they have danced for DanceWorks Chicago, Thodos Dance Chicago, BoomCrack! Dance Company, and COMMON Conservatory. Joey is earning their BFA in Dance at Columbia College Chicago, training with dance artists such as Carrie Hanson and Darrell Jones. They have created 2 works for the Dance Center of Columbia College Chicago stage, entitled why can’t I see it anymore? and O Mother, I Can Feel!!! Before their time at Columbia, they were awarded the Prodigy All Star award at Artistic Dance Exchange, and educated up-and-coming generations of dancers in Hip Hop and Contemporary aesthetics at the YMCA.

Elizabeth Moran is a first generation Latina from Chicago, Illinois. Dancing from the age of 3, most of her work reflects her Latin heritage as she has discovered her cultural Identity through dance. Her passions fall into primarily Hip Hop & Salsa. She is currently working towards her Bachelor of Arts of Dance at Columbia College Chicago.

Aly Owens was raised in Warsaw, Indiana where she started her dance career at Debra Collier’s School of Dance. She now lives in Chicago where she attends Columbia College Chicago. Through their programs she has presented her own work and also has danced in many beautiful pieces from Second Line and Hip Hop to Umfundalai and Modern. Aly loves to learn any styles when she has the chance to take them.

Lauren Payne is a sophomore at Columbia College Chicago, majoring in Dance and minoring in Arts Management. Payne has danced since the age of four under Kathi Nallia and has trained and performed for the past eleven years around the greater Kansas City area.

Sophia Peck is a sophomore working towards her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance at Columbia College Chicago. After 12 years of training in Columbus, Ohio under Jeri Pinnell and working with several notable choreographers, Sophia is excited to be furthering her dance education.

Michaela Reese is a dancer, teacher, student and choreographer who finds enjoyment in any form of dancing. Michaela infuses different styles and elements to leave her dance identity all over the dance world, bringing a sense of community. Practicing and teaching what she studies, as well as making newer routes.

Bella Shea is a current sophomore dance major at Columbia College Chicago. Bella has had 17 years of training in various styles such as Contemporary, Modern, Ballet, Jazz, Hip Hop, Sports Acrobatics, and Musical Theatre Dance at Motion Express School of Dance and Acrobatics and was also incredibly involved in the competition team, Dance Force. After college, Bella plans to continue pursuing concert and music video dance as well as chorus dancing in theatre.

Gabby Sheets is a Senior BFA Dance major at Columbia College Chicago. She gravitates specifically towards Contemporary dance styles, with a mixture of Improvisation. Gabby has had a handful of amazing opportunities to perform works created by Columbia faculty, by her fellow peers, and has even been in her own works.

Se’Niyah Tribble is a dynamic and versatile dancer hailing from Chicago, Illinois. With a passion for movement that transcends boundaries, Se’Niyah has honed her craft through years of dedicated training and performance experience.Born and raised in the city of Chicago, Se’Niyah discovered her love for dance at a young age. She embarked on her dance journey in middle school when she learned West African rhythms and drumming followed by learning Ballroom Dance. Se’Niyah’s commitment to her art led her to pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance at Columbia College Chicago, where she is to graduate in May. Se’Niyah’s performance repertoire is as diverse as her training, encompassing a wide range of styles and artistic expressions. From Contemporary works like Ephemeral Mesmerism to high-energy Hip Hop performances, Se’Niyah’s performances captivate audiences with her grace, athleticism, and emotional depth.

Diamond Turner is freshman here at Columbia College Chicago pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Dance and a minor in Marketing. Diamond is an extremely talented and well rounded dancer from the Southside of Chicago, IL. who has been dancing for almost 10 years now and has trained in Ballet, Modern, Contemporary, Jazz, Hip Hop, West African, and even Ballroom Dance. Diamond is a dancer who is very passionate about the artistry of the craft, as she uses dance as an outlet for self expression!

Nautica Turner is a Chicago native who’s in her final year at Columbia College Chicago completing a degree in Dance. Her dance training stretches across various styles but is grounded in Afro Centric movement and Modern influences.

Caitlin Wonsowski, born and raised in Normal, Illinois began her dance training at USA Ballet Academy, in Bloomington, IL. She attended Illinois State University for two years, before transferring to Columbia College Chicago in 2022 where she is now in her final year working towards her Bachelor of Arts in Dance. She has been able to continually pursue her passion for performing and has recently been putting focus on utilizing her training and love of collaboration to grow her choreographic abilities and artistic research.

Rhianna Young was born and grew up in Frankfort, Illinois. She trained at Braemar Dance Center for ten years where she took classes in a variety of styles, was on the competition team, and taught and assisted classes. Rhianna is now in her third year of pursuit of a BFA in dance at Columbia College Chicago, where she focuses on Contemporary forms and ideas of dance within her movement and choreography.

PRODUCTION AND DESIGN BIOS

Paris Anderson is a dance major and enjoys being backstage as well as being on stage. Paris has studied at Arizona school for the arts for technical theatre and arts management, graduated from Chicago High School for the Arts and is currently an undergraduate at Columbia College Chicago. She has experience in costume making, set design, props design, stage management and arts management.

Dante Giramma is a composer, multimedia artist, and sound engineer from Western Massachusetts. His work spans many mediums including fixed media, generative composition, composition for dance and film, CGI & interactive media, sound sculpture, and multimedia installation. He is incredibly invested in creating artistic experiences that are both playful and impactful, using installation work and collaboration with dancers as a catalyst to explore interactivity and physicality in art and sound.

Colleen Halloran is an adjunct faculty member in the Dance and Theatre Departments where she teaches Choreography, Advanced Topics in Dance, Screen Dance and Sound Design, and Foundations in Theatre. A choreographer, filmmaker, and educator in Chicago, Colleen is intrigued by the intersection and manipulation of movement, image, and story to arrive at a collective “whole”. She has been awarded numerous grants for her dance choreography and her films have screened in Japan, Palm Springs, San Francisco, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Atlanta and Chicago. Her feature screenplays have been finalists for The Sundance Screenwriters Lab and Quarterfinalist for the Academy Nicholl Fellowship. Colleen has been on faculty at Columbia College Chicago since 1997.

Jane Jerardi serves as the Media/Technology Coordinator for the Dance Center, providing video documentation for both the Presenting Series and its academic programs. As a part of its faculty, she teaches video for dance and choreography courses. In her role, she has documented and edited over 250 performances, workshops, and events, providing essential documentation to artists and adding to the Dance Center’s leading, regional archive of materials dating from 1980 to the present. An artist working in the media of performance, choreography, and video installation, her work has been presented at galleries and theaters in Chicago, New York, and Washington, DC.

Kevin Rechner has been Production Manager and Technical Director for the Dance Center of Columbia College Chicago since 1996. He has a bachelor’s degree in Theatre from Illinois State University and spent 3 years in Paris, France studying Movement Theatre with Jacques Lecoq and Daniel Stein. He has created four solo performance works including I AM HUGO and performed in Emily Johnson’s Thank You Bar at the Dance Center. Technically, he has worn many hats for The Joffrey Ballet of Chicago, Daniel Stein, Akira Kasai, Kota Yamazaki, Momenta!, Hedwig Dances, Urban Bush Women, HT Chen and Dancers, Natya Dance Theatre, Mordine and Company Dance Theatre, The Seldoms and many more. Kevin’s work with Lucky Plush Productions includes Cinderbox 18, The Sky Hangs Down Too Close, Punk Yankees, The Better Half, Cinderbox 2.0, Trip the Light Fantastic: The Making of Superstrip, and Rink Life Recent lighting designs include Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus, and Junie B. Jones, The Musical and Last Stop on Market Street for The Young People’s Theatre of Chicago.

Anna Schultz-Breef (she/her/hers) is a Stage Manager for Theater and Dance, as well as a Theatre Artisan with an adoration for Lighting and Carpentry. Her most recent work consists of: Stage Manager for Owensboro Dance Theater’s Nutcracker, Lighting Designer for Northwestern University’s Emperor of Atlantis, Asst. Stage Manager for the Joffrey Ballet’s Frankenstein, Asst. Stage Manager for Joffrey Ballet’s Chicago and D.C. run of Anna Karenina, the Master Electrician for the Northwestern University Opera department, and Stagehand for Columbia College Dance Center. Anna graduated from Illinois Wesleyan University in 2021 and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Theatre Arts along with a double minor in Theatre Design & Technology, and Asian Studies.

Quonyel Shelton is a dynamic Film and Television major at Columbia College Chicago, specializing in cinematography. Her passion for self-expression and empowerment shines through in her creative work, including cinematic vlogs focused on promoting self-love and inspiration. With a proven track record of leadership and creativity, Quonyel has directed and oversaw the production of short films, edited television episodes and commercials, and provided valuable support in various production capacities. Her dedication to mentorship and creativity has earned her recognition within her field, and she brings the same level of commitment to all artistic endeavors.

FACULTY MENTOR BIOS

Bevara Anderson is a professional dance artist from the Maryland coast. Bevara focuses on the embodied research that lives within Umfundalai, House, Footwork, Horton, Contemporary Ballet, Improvisation, and many other Contemporary movement styles. Bevara is now rendering dance work based in narrative, abstraction, meditation, and continues to consider the experience of joy as a form of resistance in the Black American community. Bevara is of the final generation of dancers to study under the direct tutelage of Dr. Kariamu Welsh, and holds this feat with pride as she continues to share Dr. Welsh’s technique, Umfundalai.

Carrie Hanson A dance artist, producer, and educator, Carrie Hanson creates performance charged by bold, exacting physicality and fueled by research in history, science, the environment, and justice. Since founding The Seldoms in 2002, Hanson has built a reputation for ambitious projects that speak to urgent social issues. She assembles practitioners of visual arts, theater, music, and fashion to create visually expansive, intellectually muscular productions. Hanson was Chicago Tribune’s 2015 “Chicagoan of the Year in Dance”, honored for her “political, issue-oriented dance theater” and “brawny, brainy movement”. Her favorite project, Power Goes, about Lyndon Baines Johnson, toured to ten US venues, where she led a workshop about civil rights with a diverse community cast in each city. The Seldoms has toured nationally, to Russia, Taiwan, and Scotland. Working with Glasgow visual artists, they created Toolbox, a procedure for cross-disciplinary exchange. She has designed works for sites including a truck garage and Chicago Landmark fieldhouse, and her dance in a pool, Giant Fix, was named one of the “best dance moments of the past decade” by TimeOut. Hanson was 2019 Interdisciplinary Artist-in-Residence at UW-Madison.

Dardi McGinley-Gallivan is a Professor of Instruction in the Dance Department who specializes in Pedagogy and Modern Technique courses. Dardi is a founding member of Molly Shanahan/Mad Shak Dance Company, performed for Mordine & Company Dance Theatre, and Colleen Halloran Performance Group (live and dance for camera). She received the Louis Sutler Prize for the Arts as an undergraduate and a Ruth Page Award in Chicago for Performance. Dardi has a long history of teaching residencies for Antares Danza Contemporeanea in Hermosillio, Mexico and received two Faculty Development Grants to facilitate projects with Antares company member, Isaac Chau. She received her BA in Art History with a Minor in Dance from Emory University and her MA in Dance from The Ohio State University.
