Welcome to the Colusa County Fair as we celebrate 75 Years of “Country Roots & Cowboy Boots.” We have an exciting Fair ready for you with traditional exhibits, pageants, carnival rides and livestock shows as well as new music, strolling entertainers, and the Friday night Fireworks show. We are excited to bring hypnotist Susan Rosen for some great entertainment, some amazing stilt walkers in fanciful costumes, the sand sculptures, chainsaw artists in action, and a very fun show and exhibit – “Wild About Monkeys.” Our Fair could not survive without the assistance of the community. Depue Warehouse continues to support us with our special exhibit Wild About Monkeys. Umpqua Bank, Morning Star Packing & Trucking, Sun Valley Rice, Johnston Amusements, Les Schwab, Tri Counties Bank, Superior Products, Richards Tree Service, ADM and others all contribute to our ability to bring this special community celebration to you. Promosiones Paracuaro is holding a Mexican Rodeo and Dance on Saturday night and Villagrana Promotions brings the Latino entertainment on the Main Stage on Sunday. Of greatest import for the future of the Fair, this year the Board welcomes the new Colusa County Fair Foundation and the very enthusiastic Board of that organization that hit the ground running. They have begun the membership drive which will culminate in a Charter Member Plaque on the Fairgrounds. And they have already planned a golf tournament and “Tumbleweed Ball” in October. In conjunction with the Junior Livestock Auction Committee’s support, the Foundation has generated enough revenue to fund a new Fur & Feathers building to house the Poultry & Rabbits. Be sure to visit it and the small animals it houses. Our thanks to President Ben Carter, VP Patty Hickel, Secretary Treasurer Sheila Etchepare, and Dave Nelson, Emmet Pennebaker, Dan Bailey, Sandy Ottenwalter, Hal Charter, Mike Doherty, plus the Fair Board Representatives, Dan O’Connell and Terry Bressler. And as always, our gratitude to our sponsors, especially Colusa Casino Resort that has remained the major sponsor of the Fair for the past 15 years. Without their significant contribution, the Fair would have been very hard pressed to provide the competitive programs, let along the outside entertainment that has been brought to the community. Come enjoy the 75th annual Colusa County Fair with us as we look forward to a bright future!

Tony Garofalo Tony Garofalo, President, Colusa County Fair Board of Directors

CRASH, BOOM, BAM!! The Colusa County Fair Destruction Derby on Sunday encourages drivers to put their cars to the ultimate test. They will crash, smash, and ram each other to cartoonish crunched heaps of metal, trying to keep their own vehicle running while fans scream. Would you be willing to climb into a car with all the glass removed, the doors chained or welded shut, and have a field full of other drivers do their best to wreck your car with you in it? For the chance at winning some cash and a lot of glory, brave men and women, youngsters and seasoned veterans, will pull on their protective helmets, squeeze-in through

the driver’s side window, gun their engines and take aim at each other in the mud of the Colusa County Fair. The theme of a Destruction Derby is “Destroy or be Destroyed” and the crash ’em

/smash ’em event slated for the Grandstands arena on Sunday, June 8 will be no different. Drivers do their best, while driving in reverse,

forward and often sideways, in a bed of mud, to smash the other cars to smithereens. The audience cheers as mud flies, wheels spin in the gooey mess, and one car after another is annihilated or the overworked and overheated engines give up in a smoky haze. Between heats, teams madly pull out major dents that might keep a wheel from turning, weld broken parts, and tinker with barely running engines in order to make it back out to the next heat. The last car running in each heat goes on to the final championship event. If you plan to attend the Colusa County Fair Destruction Derby, get your tickets in advance as the lines form early for this sell-out event. Tickets are $15 reserved, $10 general admission for all ages.

He plays basketball on a unicycle. He can juggle nine balls at a time. He sings, plays the piano, pan pipes, and hand whistles. He dances salsa, ballroom, contra, Irish, Mexican and International Folk. He is an origami master and editor of BARF (Bay Area Rapid Folder.) He has a Bachelor of Arts in Math. He is fluent in Spanish and converses in Italian and French. He designed an expanding sphere for possible use by NASA. Unbelievable? Jeremy the Juggler does all the above and more. You’ll find him drawing crowds around the fairgrounds as he folds flaming origami while riding his unicycle, eating fire and juggling fire lit torches. He may be 11 feet tall as he strolls around on his stilts or on his knees twisting a balloon animal for a child. He will be hard to miss – there’s always a crowd standing nearby in amazement.

Up, Down, Over and Around The smile never leaves the face of Ken Johnston, owner and operator of the Midway of Fun Carnival. That smile reflects the smiles on the faces of the children eagerly awaiting the first ride of the Fair. When you arrive at the Colusa County Fair, waves of giggles and squeals from children will reach your ears as youngsters twirl, dip and bounce in their own special carnival adventure. At the 2014 Colusa County Fair, you will discover rides to entertain, or give you a rush going upside down or around and around, along-side the simple Carousel! Who can resist tossing a ball into a basket on the midway in hopes of winning one of those giant stuffed animals you see teenagers carrying around? You can save on the cost of carnival rides by purchasing discount wristbands in advance. A $25 unlimited ride wristband can be used any one day of the Fair. During the Fair, wristbands can be purchased at Carnival ticket booths for $30. During the Fair, ride tickets will cost $1 each and rides take three to five tickets each. Wristbands are available at Davison Drug, LaReyna, and Chung Sun Market in Colusa, Fouch & Son in Williams, and Corona’s and Lana Bento in Arbuckle.

The 2014 Colusa County Junior Fair Board

The Junior Fair Board of the 44th District Agricultural Association (44th D.A.A.) is a youth-orientated program that is comprised of students from each of the five high schools located within Colusa County. Representatives of the junior fair board serve two-year terms and work along-side members of the 44th D.A.A. in an effort to help make the Colusa County Fair the huge success it grown to become.

Kendall Cotter

Hello, I’m Kendall Cotter and I attend Colusa High School. Some of my activities include raising swine for the county fair, playing softball and hanging out with friends! I was also crowned Miss Colusa County last year which has kept me busy with local and county events. The relationship I have to the fair while being on the Junior Fair Board is trying to be a good role model to others and helping others with what is needed at fair time. I try to stay as busy during fair to make everything more memorable.

Carli Costa

Carli Costa is 16 years old and lives in Maxwell with her family. She is the daughter of George and Laurie Costa and has one sister, Allison who attends Saint Mary’s College. Carli has shown sheep since she was 7 years old, starting with jackpot shows, then in 4-H and now FFA. Carli was honored to be selected to the junior fair board because she wanted to carry on the family tradition; her late grandmother, Catherine Costa was on the fair board for several years and her mother, Laurie Costa has been on the fair board for 11 years and her sister, Allison Costa was a member of the junior fair board for 2 years. Carli is a junior at Maxwell High School and enjoys cheerleading and softball and is involved in FFA, FBLA and student government. She also does tap, jazz and ballet at Stardust Dance. She spends her time swimming, hanging out with friends, taking photographs, scrapbooking, laughing, watching movies, texting and learning to cook. Carli’s goal at the fair has always been to do the best she can with her sheep. This year she will be busy with her sheep, her junior fair board duties and assisting with the Mr. Cinderfella pageant.

Bryce Perry

“I attend Maxwell High School and will be graduating in June. I believe the fair brings the community together for a few days in June and generates income in the community. It also shows how our community supports our youth by their generosity at the Junior Livestock Auction. I have learned responsibility, teamwork, and the importance of giving back to the community by serving on the Junior Fair Board.”

Allison Ward

I am Allison Ward a junior at Williams High School. I’m a member and officer in FBLA, FFA, yearbook, ASB, and 4-H. I play softball, basketball, and cheerleading. I love the fair because it’s the one time everybody from all around the county comes together. I’m glad to be a part of the Jr. Fair board because I get to have a say in what happens at the fair.

Shayne Myers

Hi! My name is Shayne Myers. I am 16 years old and a junior at Colusa High School. My parents are Randy and Stephanie Myers. I currently serve on the Colusa FFA chapter officer team and will next year be the Senior Class President. I play tennis and am a member of CSF. I have been exhibiting steers at the Colusa County Fair since I was nine. It is near and dear to my heart. I decided to give my time back to the fair by participating on the Junior Fair Board and I was thrilled to have been chosen. If I can be of any assistance to you at the fair, please come and find me and I would be glad to help.

Miranda Perez

My name is Miranda Perez. I attend Princeton High as a senior and participate in the FFA as well as other activities in the our small school. My experience in the Colusa County Junior Fair Board as a junior and now a senior have been full of new experiences for me. Meeting new people is what is always fun, especially when they are all very generous. Even though my participation in FFA and the Junior Fair Board have come to an end as a senior, I hope to sometime come back and be apart of the fair in anyway I can.

Salvador Gutierrez

My name is Salvador Gutierrez and I’ve been living in Princeton since 2010. I’m a Jr. at Princeton High School and I am a member of block P, FFA, Mecha. I play football, basketball and baseball. I have been a part of FFA since I was a Freshman. This year I wanted participate more in the fair so I decided to join the Jr. Fair board. I’ve always thought the fair was a great way to bring our community together in order to have a good time and to socialize with each other.

The 2014 Colusa County Junior Fair Board - Not Pictured

Austin Traynham

“I attend Maxwell High School and will graduate in June. I am actively involved in football, Maxwell FFA, and the Junior Fair Board. I enjoy showing cattle and being around my friends. The biggest lesson that I have learned from being on the Junior Fair Board is how to work with other people from different areas, with different opinions. I participate in the fair by showing my steer, breeding heifers, and entering shop projects.”

Blake Vierra

“I attend Maxwell High School and will graduate in June. I play football, basketball, and baseball. I am also active in Maxwell FFA and the Colusa County Junior Fair Board. I exhibit swine projects in the Colusa County Fair and am excited to see this year’s exhibits.”

Ashley Ornbaun

I am a Senior at Colusa High School. I play volleyball, basketball and track. I am active in the Colusa County FFA and Junior Fair Board. My favorite part of the fair is seeing all my progress with my projects from the beginning of the year and selling my steer. The biggest lesson I have learned from being on the Junior Fair Board is leadership. The importance of the fair is to help the younger kids want to become involved with the community.”

Zack Troughton

I attend Maxwell High School and will graduate in June. I play football, basketball and baseball. I am also active in the Maxwell FFA and the Colusa County Fair Board. My favorite memory of the fair was from two-years ago watching Russell Jones act like Taylor Swift during the Mr. Cinderfella Pageant.

Searah Robertson

“I grew up in Colusa County and have attended the fair as long as I can remember. I am involved with 4-H and FFA and have shown lamb since the 5th grade. I love spending time and making memories with my friends and family. I have learned how much work goes into the fair and how many people devoted their time and lives to make the fair successful. My favorite fair memory is showing lambs with some of my best friends and the support we give each other every year.”

Colusa County Fair Foundation A newly formed non-profit organization that was created in late December has hit the ground running by securing funding for a new livestock facility at the Colusa County Fairgrounds. The Colusa County Fair Foundation has been formed as a 501(c)(3) Corporation for charitable purposes, with its primary emphasis to provide financial support to the Colusa County Fair. The Foundation was formed after the state of California suspended financial assistance to all county fairs, posing a challenge for county fairs to provide maintenance to its existing facilities and ending nearly all hopes of building any new ones. “Nowadays when you solicit contributions from banks or large corporations, one of the first things they look at is to see if you are a 501(c)(3),” said Terry Bressler, 44th District Agricultural Association board member. The objectives of the Foundation are to “develop financial resources by fostering donations, grants and bequests from members, friends, and supporters; through fund-raising and campaigns events. To allocate these financial resources, along with volunteer time to programs, events and

activities that support and develop local organizations and educational opportunities focused upon Colusa County’s agricultural heritage; to provide financial support to educate the community concerning the value and importance of the Colusa County Fair and its facilities.” In December, Bressler along with several community members came up with the idea of forming the Colusa County Fair Foundation to help solicit additional revenue to help with some renovation that was needed at the fairgrounds. The Foundation raised more than $15,000 in less than 5 months and received an additional $5,000 from the Livestock Auction Committee to build a new “fur and feathers” building at the fairgrounds. The newly constructed metal building will house rabbits and chickens during the Colusa County Fair. Bressler said donations are being sought by the Fair to help pay for landscaping that is needed around the new facility. The Colusa County Fair Foundation is comprised of members: Ben Carter, president; Patty Hickel, vice-president; Shiela Etchepare, secretary/treasurer; Daniel

Friend to the Fair

As the 75th annual Colusa County Fair opens this year it will do so without longtime supporter and friend, Jim Rogers, who passed away in 2013. Rogers served as a director on the 44th District Agricultural Association for many years having been Chairman on more than one occasion. He also served as chairman of the Colusa Farm Show Committee. Each year whether it was at the Colusa County Fair or the Colusa Farm Show, Rogers could be seen walking the grounds providing assistance to anyone who needed it. He also assisted during the Livestock Auction as Ring Caller.
