An inside look from current Counseling and College Student Personnel student Stina Neiman, and Assistant Dean of Admissions Dr. Jennifer Haughie.
“Undergrad was where I was discovering who I am and what I’m good at, grad school prepares me to be a professional.” Quoted from current Counseling and Student Personnel graduate student Stina Neiman, she believed grad school to be an integral part in her professional development. Graduate school is new world that is both different and similar at the same time to her experiences in her undergrad. Coming from a small school with compact class sizes she appreciates the close relationships she is able to form with her professors because of the comparable class sizes here at Shippensburg.
“Undergrad was where I was discovering who I am and what I’m good at, grad school prepares me to be a professional.”- Stina Neiman “At first the workload was overwhelming at times, but it was never out of realm of being doable.” The amount of work is not much more in comparison to undergraduate coursework but the importance of the material in the classes carries more weight in terms of significance towards her career. All the readings need to be done, not just glanced at or skipped. The formats for papers need to be perfect not sloppy. Lastly time management takes
on a new meaning in graduate school where one needs to balance schoolwork, graduate assistantships, internships, all while still having the time for a social life. The whole idea of approaching one’s peers is different. She described it as the other students in class being her professional acquaintances. Through the coursework and real world experience needed for the graduate degree, one develops more professional relationships that would be similar to one’s relationships in their first day on the job in the profession of their choice. Stina went on to say that because of her experiences in the Counseling and Student Personnel program she believes she has the confidence to be a contributor in the work force right away; meanwhile, if one were to dive right into a job out of undergrad there may be some training needed or time for one to acclimate one’s self to the work environment. Graduate school has provided her with the confidence that she knows what she is doing. Along with every job there is some bumps and bruises that come along with getting used to one’s job but those figurative injuries are lessened with a stronger foundation with a higher degree. With the extra schooling, she believes she has a foothold on the competition for jobs in her field in the future. In many career sectors, including higher education in Stina’s case, a master’s degree is replacing a bachelor’s as the minimum requirement for employment. In the 1980s one could secure an entry level position as an admissions counselor, academic advisor, or student services coordinator. Now by the 2000s, applicants for these same level positions were not even considered unless they held a master’s degree. While holding a graduate degree is not a
The Value of the Graduate guarantee of employment Degree and/or success in one’s field, it certainly makes the individual more competitive amongst their peers as well as opening many more doors for employment. Overall, the sense of accomplishment one gains from acquiring a graduate degree is worth the long hours dedicated to one’s field of study. Unquestionably, an advanced degree makes a difference on a resume. It says something about who you are and the dedication you have to your chosen field. “Graduate school was growing, learning, and interacting.” Jennifer Haughie, who is the current Associate Vice President for Enrollment Management/ Dean of Admissions, reflected back to her time in graduate school. Jennifer believed that a grad degree fine tunes one’s career choices similar to how work experience would. She personally took a hiatus from school to gather this work experience and to then come back and sharpen her skills based upon this experience. Both avenues, going straight through school, and coming back after a stint in the work force, can lead one to the right profession or career it really just comes down to what one’s individual goals are and how one wants to accomplish them.
“Graduate school was growing, learning, and interacting.” - Dr. Jennifer Haughie For Jennifer, she personally wanted to understand what she wanted before she continued pursuing her master’s degree. Graduate assistantships, internships, part-time
jobs, and real life work experience all play an important role in the development of the individual. She believes a master’s degree gives one the specialization to excel in their individual field, and reflecting back to Stina, provides one with the confidence to perform their job to a high level. Jennifer thought it would valuable to work in one’s related field in order to see where one needs to improve. Once improvements are seen to be needed then she believed it is easier to pinpoint those weaknesses and to build upon them with a more advanced degree. In summation, the pursuit of the undergraduate degree there may be times where some classes are hard to get through because they are part of the core fulfillment process. In this regard, one’s heart may not entirely be into those classes though this is not always the case. Despite this, she said she sees why it is important to be well rounded in all facets of one’s education and not just in their individual field. -Ben Klimchock

The Benefits of Earning Your Graduate Degree and How Shippensburg Helps You Stand Out from the Crowd.
Grad Path at SHIP by Anthony Renz
Shippensburg University offers anything and everything for the status quo college student in today’s society. As a part of the PASSHE system, the competition is always prevalent and fierce. One specific area Shippensburg University looks to distinguish itself from the rest of the crowd is their graduate studies programs. Shippensburg University’s School of Graduate Studies offers a total of 57 graduate programs in various areas that include business, leadership, education and sciences. The competition amongst state schools in regards to graduate programs/admissions is also fierce and the offices of these graduate schools are constantly looking for ways to differentiate from the group. Megan Luft serves as the Assistant Dean of Graduate Admissions at Shippensburg University and has been involved with higher education for nearly 10 years. She previously worked at Harrisburg University of Science and Technology in the admissions office and is currently pursuing her doctoral degree. Her main responsibility at Shippensburg is to oversee all of the graduate admissions including the staff that makes up her office. Luft not only uses what the university has to offer to recruit/ advertise the graduate programs but also uses the level of importance a graduate degree in today’s job market as motivation to improve the admission office. “I think it’s a lot more important now, in 2016 and moving forward, (to have master’s degree) because we had this huge push to further education past just a standard bachelor’s degree. A master’s degree is a great way to separate yourself from the competition,” Luft said.

moving forward, (to have master’s degree) because we had this huge push to further education past just a standard bachelor’s degree. A master’s degree is a great way to separate yourself from the competition,” - Megan Luft The job market itself has dictated this importance of a graduate degree. More and more companies are looking for higher education candidates went beyond a bachelor level education. “If you’re comfortable with mid level and entry level jobs, then a bachelor’s degree with suffice, but in order to move up into higher management level position’s a master’s degree is required. “ The main goal of Luft’s position is to grow and promote the graduate studies programs at Shippensburg University. However, some of this is out of her control. You need the students to enroll in order for you to even have chance to achieve a graduate degree. “High school graduate rates are falling rapidly, mainly because of population trends, and because of that there are less and less kids that all these universities are competing for and I think a great way to separate ourselves is through our graduate studies program.” Luft is satisfied with where Shippensburg stands among PASSHE schools but never wants to be complacent in such a competitive field. “I am constantly looking

at the competition, whether is segmented geographically or within the state system, its vital for us to know and understand what out competitors are doing.”
“I am constantly looking at the competition, whether is segmented geographically or within the state system, its vital for us to know and understand what out competitors are doing.” In the future Shippensburg will be looking to add more doctoral programs under Luft’s guidance, as she believes it would be a great way to differentiate from the crowd.
An idea that has been circulated amongst the graduate admission office is the idea of a “4 plus 1” program, where is you attend Shippensburg for your undergrad and stay for a fifth year, the student can attain their master’s in the added year. “The four plus one program is going to give us a competitive edge and a great way to promote our undergraduate program’s as well.” This program along with making more master’s programs available online are just two of the many ideas that can thrown around within the graduate admission world. With the leadership of Luft and her staff, Shippensburg seems to be well on its way to dominating the local and statewide field in graduate level education. - Anthony Renz
