The Comanche Nation Spur Casino opened their doors to its newly finished casino on May 16. The Casino located just North of the Comanche Nation Complex has drawn locals from Spur, Elgin, and Apache areas. A Ribbon Cutting Ceremony is scheduled for 5 p.m. June 26. Comanche Spur Casino General Manager, Forney Beaver, said the night they opened they had
130 customers that came out to play and take a look around. “That number would have been over capacity at the old casino.” When asked how him and his employees feel about the casino,” Beaver said “They love it, and we are excited and ready to start making money for the Comanche people.” The new facility offers over 180 slot machines, a deli, con-
venience store, fueling stations, and smoke shop. The new improvements will accommodate all customer’s needs. Diane Humetewa, Arizona State University Special Advisor to the President for American Indian Affairs, has been named the first American Indian woman to serve as a federal judge. Humetewa won unanimous approval in the U.S. Senate in a 96-0 vote and will serve in the federal District Court of Arizona. “I feel privileged to serve in this new capacity and I am certainly grateful for all of the support that President Crow and the ASU community offered me throughout the confirmation process,” Humetewa said. This isn’t the first time Humetewa has made her mark in history. She was the first American Indian female to be appointed as a U.S. Attorney in 2007. During a long career in public service, she also served as counsel to the U.S. Senate Indian Affairs Subcommittee, then chaired by Sen. John McCain. Before the Senate vote, Senator McCain informed the Senate body of the historic nature of the vote. As a Professor of Practice in the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law and Special Advisor to the President, Humetewa taught Indian law and worked to improve the retention and success of American Indian students at the university. “Diane Humetewa has excelled in efforts to bring higher education to American Indian people on tribal lands throughout the state and to improve their academic experience at the university,” said ASU President Michael M. Crow. “We look forward to following her progress as she continues her exceptional career in public service.” Humetewa, who will leave ASU to serve on the federal district court, was chairperson of the ASU Tribal Liaison Advisory Committee and a member of the Provost’s Native American Advisory Council. Humetewa, a member of the Hopi tribe, was born and raised in Arizona. She began school on the Hualapai Reservation and traveled throughout Arizona’s Indian country with her father, who worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Humetewa received her Juris Doctor degree in 1993 from ASU’s Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law and her bachelor’s degree from ASU in 1987. She has served on the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law Indian Legal Advisory Committee since 1997.

FOSTER CARE FAMILIES/FACILITIES NEEDED The Comanche Nation Children’s Court (CNCC) and Indian Child Welfare Department (ICWD) need foster care families for placement of Comanche children. The “Comanche Children and Family Relations Code of 2008” and “Comanche Indian Child Welfare Code of 1982” define foster homes. Foster home means a facility for the care of children in a family-type setting, licensed or approved in accordance with Comanche Code, and State laws or, if outside the Nation’s jurisdiction, by the law of the jurisdiction in which such home is physically located or both. Currently the number of children taken into custody of the ICWD and the State of Oklahoma Department of Human Services (OKDHS) far exceeds the number of foster homes available. While it is the mission of the ICWD and CNCC to see that families are reunified, circumstances sometimes exist that prevent reunification. Children taken into protective custody deserve a better way of life. They need a parent, guardian and/or custodian to guide them onto the right path of life. They need a parent, guardian and/or custodian to show them affection, guidance, strength, faith, compassion, education, but most of all they need love and understanding. Please contact CNCC or ICWD for more information on how to become a foster care family today. Contact Information: Indian Child Welfare Program. P. O. Director for the Comanche Nation Child Care Program Attends International Conference on Child Care Submitted by Comanche Nation Early Childhood Development Staff
Tribal elders watch presentations by Haskell Indian Nations College students and Natives from Anchorage, AK during a trip to Lawrence, Kan.
Elders Council Special Guests in Lawrence, Kansas Submitted by the Comanche Nation Elders Council
Comanche Nation Elders Council Trip to Lawrence, Kansas The Comanche Nation Elders council (CNEC) took 25 elders on a trip to Lawrence, Kan., May 8-11. The CNEC had been planning this trip to Lawrence for months using the Comanche Nation Bus. However, two days before leaving, they were informed by their bus driver that the Comanche Nation Bus was in Oklahoma City to be fixed and had been for some time. They were fortunate that Sandra Toyekoyah was at the Comanche Nation Complex at that time and waited to see Will Owens, Tribal Administrator, letting him know of the dilemma. Owens contacted Asa Attocknie, who arranged for a tour bus from Oklahoma City. So the CNEC found out the afternoon before they left they had transportation for the Elders trip. The CNEC want to thank Toyekoyah, Owens, and Attocknie for their efforts in getting the CNEC transportation for the trip. Log of Activities Thursday, May 8, the CNEC left the Comanche Nation Complex at 8:30 a.m. They stopped off in Wichita, Kan., at the Mid America All Indian Cultural Center, had a catered lunch, and a viewing of the Blackbear Bosin video and exhibit. The Cultural Center grounds houses the statue by Bosin, the Guardian of the Plains. They said they were treated wonderfully and the Cultural Center and grounds were impressive. Friday, May 9, 2014, the CNEC departed the Hotel for Haskell Indian Nations College, where they attended commencement ceremonies. They were met by Manny King and Joshua Mihesuah, who escorted them to their reserved seating and took care of us answering questions and providing direction. The CNEC was introduced to the crowed by Stephen Prue, and were mentioned in the Lawrence Newspaper as visiting dignitaries. Following the commencement the CNEC went to lunch at Curtis Hall, then over to the museum (which was opened solely for the group) where King had arranged pre-
sentations by students and a native from Anchorage, Alaska. After a short rest, the group headed for the Pow-Wow grounds arriving for the Grand Entry. The CNEC participated in an honor dance for Miller who had recently retired form Haskell, by the request of Garrison Tahmahkera. On Saturday, May 10, 2014, the CNEC went to University of Kansas for a visit to the Natural History Museum, the Student Union and a guided bus tour of the KU campus. The group was treated wonderfully, with the presentations geared specifically for our group. In fact, three Comanche artifacts were brought to the presentation for our viewing alone. They were also given a background presentation on the horse Comanche, who was the sole survivor of the Battle of the Little Bighorn. He had numerous bullet and arrow holes, was patched up and lived for 13 more years. Upon his passing he was taken as a taxidermy subject, he was exhibited at the World’s Fair along with other taxidermy creations. From there he was taken to the University of Kansas and remains there today. At the end of our Museum tour they were presented gift bags form KU which contained a KU cap, a notepad and pen, sticker and lapel pin. They were taken on a guided bus tour of the KU campus by student volunteers. After the bus tour we stopped at the Student Union to shop for souvenirs. They stopped at lunch the Oread Hotel, where there were several different restaurants to choose from. Those who were brave enough went up to the roof, called the Nest, where we had a windy but beautiful view of the KU Campus. There were a few restful hours that afternoon before those who wished to went out to the second night of the Haskell PowWow. Sunday, May 11, 2014, the CNEC started the ride back to Oklahoma. The CNEC Executive Board presented each of the ladies on the bus with a long stemmed red rose for Mother’s Day.
Carolyn Codopony, Child Care Development Fund Program Director, Comanche Nation joined 841 early childhood leaders and practitioners from 81 nations at the tenth World Forum on Early Care and Education held May 6-9, 2014 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The focus of the event was to discuss the delivery of quality services to young children globally and to develop action plans for achieving quality in diverse settings. “For children of the world to have promising futures,” said Carolyn Codopony, “early childhood programs must meet their needs for optimal growth and development.
By attending the World Forum, I had the unique opportunity to network with early childhood leaders from six continents and share idea about what quality really means. My world shrank and grew at the very same time. I was inspired and motivated to address the needs of our very own children here in our community and across Indian Country.” Carolyn Codopony was very blessed to share a Comanche Hymn with her new global friends in a Plenary Sessions held on Thursday Morning of the conference. “Language and culture is near and dear to my heart,” said Carolyn, “because every child, regardless of their physi-
cal or intellectual challenges, deserves all the help they need to meet their full potential.” This includes being proud of who God made them. Language and cultural preservation is a global issue. People all across the globe are engaged and working on this very worthwhile effort.” Presentations were made at the World Forum by more than 250 early childhood professionals from all over the world, including Afghanistan, Colombia, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iraq, Myanmar, Pakistan, Peru, Qatar, and Zimbabwe. Military Submitted by: Lanny Asepermy/Comanche Indian Veterans Association
CIVA Install 201st Military Marker One of the many services the Comanche Indian Veterans Association (CIVA), provides is placement of military markers for the families of deceased Comanche veterans or veterans who were married into Comanche families. Commercial installers usually charge $100 or more for this service. A total of 201 military markers have been installed by the CIVA since 2003. There are four different types of military markers. The upright headstone is either white marble or light gray granite and is 42 inches high, 13 inches wide and four inches thick and weighs 230 lbs. When installed it goes 18” into the ground and is leveled side-to-side and front to rear. Bronze flat markers are 24 inches long, 12 inches wide with a ¾ inch rise. They weigh 18 lbs and in most cases are placed on top of a 135 lb concrete pad. The light gray granite or white marble flat marker is 24 inches long, 12 inches wide and 4 inches thick and weighs 130 lbs – this marker is placed 2-3 inches into the ground or on a pad. The bronze niche is 8 ½ inches long, 5 ½ inches wide with a 7/16-inch rise. These markers are used for columbarium or mausoleum interments and are installed by cemetery officials.

Dear TCNN Letters to the Editor
Dear TCNN, I'm writing this letter because of my frustration with the election process. I have heard frustrations for years, from many tribal citizens of the Comanche Nation. I am not sure why it is set up as it is but when something is broke, it needs to be fixed! If the constitution states this is the process...then we need a revision. Many think that the leaders of this tribal nation really do not care about the majority of it's citizens, especially those that don't live close. My heart hopes this isn't true. The system in place now allows the 400 or so people that are involved around the tribal headquarters to make the decisions for 15,000+ Comanche citizens. Regardless of what many may think...many don't vote because the system just doesn't work, they have no idea who these people are and no rational as to why they should vote for them or the programs to fund (or not fund). I am grateful for the videos created by our PIO department, they are great but the vast majority probably don't know they are available and/or may not have access. I, as one Comanche citizen that is non-local, would like to be more informed and would vote to increase funding in the areas that would broaden our technology and outreach efforts. Is this even possible to request some programs to have funding increased or are we limited to say yes/no on an already predetermined amount, which seems to always be the same and like a 'cookie cutter' model that has no increases or decreases ever noted? Most people cannot attend the general council but yet that is where the candidates are decided on and the Tribal Administrator, one of the most critical positions of the tribe,
is nominated and elected on the spot. As for the Tribal Administrator, this makes NO sense! The Tribal Administrator should be hired. There should be a non-biased committee that looks at their credentials, interviews all of them and hires the person that manages all the administration for the tribe. At the very least the process should go through this screening and then elect the individual. Personally, I think the committee should consist of some non-locals in an attempt to avoid favoritism and possible bribery. This just makes good business sense for the individual that will run a Nation! If the Comanche Nation leadership truly support the voting rights of the people then we should have a system in place that allows time for the voters to make an educated and informed ¬¬decision. I'm tired of voting on a name or based on information from someone else giving me their opinion on who I should vote for if I don't want to vote for just a name (I'm fairly certain I'm not alone). We nominate candidates in mid-April and one month later we have to vote. Within that month it takes 3 weeks (or more) to MAYBE get candidate interviews done, ballots mailed out, time to look over everything AND have the ballots back in to possibly be counted. This is an absurd process to again....allow us to be educated and informed voters. That's just on the candidates. Most of us don't have a clue what most of the programs do or how effective they are! You run the risk of shutting down a good program if you vote no but also may be funneling money into a program that doesn't produce or has no value to us if you vote yes on all of them. Would it be too much to ask,
when we are voting on a multiple million dollar budget, to have rationale, summaries, and justification for programs?!? I express my gratitude to all the candidates that have made the effort to mail out a flyer which informed us about who they are & what they want to do. I know others may care but actions speak louder than words. However, there are questions among the non-locals: for instance why only some of us receive them, how they received our contact info and if they are already in a leadership position, how they paid for it? Due to the fact that our Nation lacks transparency it makes people suspicious and justifiably so. I want to be an informed and educated voter for our great Comanche Nation, I ask our Comanche Nation leaders, including the Chairman, the CBC and the Elections Board to consider my humble request to evaluate this process, we need reform in this election process. The change of removing the additional step of requesting an absentee ballot and the paid postage was a good start but we need much more work to make this broken system work more efficiently. Ura! Marjeanna Burge (marjeanna@ me.com) Dear TCNN, The Comanche Nation Tourism Center would like to thank everyone for coming out and supporting The Indian Art Market and Flea Market Extravaganza. There were a lot of people that came out to browse the wonderful exhibits and watch our talented youth display their colorful chalk artwork. Thank you to all the vendors for setting up and sharing your wonderful talent with us. Thank you to the parents and the contestants
