CORE MATHS
Many of the new A-level exam specifications include an increased amount of mathematics. This often involves working with some high-level statistical ideas that are not studied at GCSE. Core Maths is a course that is worth the same as an AS-level, is a qualification that is recognised by universities and employers and which provides much of the mathematical and statistical background required in several A-level subjects.

“The Cambridge IPQ gives students the opportunity to explore their academic interests beyond their A-Level studies, to cross academic boundaries and to think in innovative ways. Students will engage in the effective deconstruction and reconstruction of academic research, while devising their own research question and carrying out thorough research using appropriate methodology. Students will gain the confidence to take intellectual risks and will be better placed to make a successful transition to higher study.” Mrs Jenkins
EPQ
For many students, the EPQ represents a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate passion for a chosen subject or topic, alongside development of advanced learning skills. The EPQ is characterised by independent learning, comprising a single piece of work which shows evidence of planning, preparation, research and autonomous working. It was developed with the intention of strengthening the programme of study for 16-19 year olds by testing a wider range of skills and providing a ‘tool kit’ of transferable skills that better prepares students for higher education and employment.
“I really enjoy Core Maths as you learn about topics which are useful in real life situations such as finance and the interest on different sized mortgages. I have also found Core Maths incredibly useful to support my A-Level subjects, for example in Geography I used Spearman’s rank to work out the correlation between fuel emissions and atmospheric growth.”

CAMBRIDGE IPQ
Cambridge IPQ is a brand new standalone qualification, providing students with the skills and dispositions to think critically and creatively. It allows learners to demonstrate levels of academic engagement well beyond the scope of A-Level study, developing the higher-order thinking skills of analysis, evaluation and synthesis, as well as those of research, reflection and communication. Study will include an additional taught course in critical thinking, which is of particular value to students aspiring to highly competitive university courses requiring thinking skills-based admissions assessments.
“Taking an EPQ has given me an amazing opportunity to research into an area of History not covered by my A-levels and to develop really useful academic research skills. I now feel fully prepared for university study.” Additional Entry Requirements
