Our Company

Pelasgaea S.A. aims at encouraging and promoting the Mediterranean diet and Greek agricultural products. Guided by tradition, insistence on quality and respect of the consumer and the environment, we travel all over Greece in order to select top-quality Greek products. The olive, a sacred tree in Greece, bound to light and life, and the olive products are still counted amongst the most traditional Greek products. Olive oil, the star of the Mediterranean Greek Diet, is a product internationally renowned for its excellent quality and nutritional value. Further to long research, we have selected a considerable number of certified producers and, in association with our own olive groves, we offer top quality extra virgin olive oil and olive products from the wider region of Messinia. With the guidance and assistance of specialized associated scientists, we aim at guaranteeing top quality products for the consumer. We share the same vision and philosophy with our partners, and they form an integral part of our company. The standardization–bottling and storage of our products are carried out in optimally equipped facilities (certified with ISO 9001 & ISO 22000) using cutting-edge technology systems and temperature-controlled areas. Our name has been inspired by the Pelasgians, the ancient Greeks’ ancestors, who lived in this region and often moved around in order to find food. Since we, too, originate from the Pelasgians’ land, Pelasgaea, we have adopted this name to express the modern need for a “journey” into taste.

Why Olive Oil?

Olive oil is produced using a mechanical process, contrary to seed oils – sunflower oils which are produced using a chemical process. Olive oil is a product internationally renowned for its excellent quality and high biological and nutritional value. It contains antioxidants and vitamin E, and has a particular taste and flavour. It is available in several varieties, for the consumer to enjoy a wide choice of tastes. Olive oil has the same amount of calories as the other vegetable oils, namely 9.3 calories per gram. Researches have demonstrated that it contributes to the prevention and treatment of various diseases.

Selecting Olive Oil

We choose Extra Virgin Olive Oil because it is a superior quality product, made from natural olive juice without any treatment other than pressure, through mechanical methods only and with an acidity of <0.8. Olive oil quality is judged based on the following characteristics: • Organoleptic qualities (fruity, spicy, bitter) • Acidity • Content in antioxidant agents (polyphenols, tocopherols, etc.)

Acidity A basic selection criterion is the low content of free fatty acids, which are harmful for the human organism. Low acidity must always be accompanied by low rates in 5 main quality characteristics: Peroxides<20, Waxes<250, Κ270<0.22, Κ232<2.50, DΚ<0.01 according to Commission Regulation (EC) No. 1989/2003.

Cold Extraction Olive oil received through filtering or centrifugation of the olive paste at a temperature lower than 28oC. This is the only way to guarantee its quality, and to maintain a low acidity rate and the specific organoleptic qualities.

Antioxidant Substances The natural phenols content depends on the olive oil variety. The polyphenols components are critical chemical indicators for the determination of the olive oil quality.

Anthia® Products

Our company produces and standardizes two types of extra virgin olive oil from the region of Kalamata and from the wider region of Messinia, under the name Anthia®. 65% of the total Greek olive oil quantity is produced in the Peloponnese. We receive the olive oil from our olive groves and cooperating producers. The olive trees belong to the Variety “Koroneyki”, qualified by the International Olive Oil Council as a variety of universal heritage. In order to guarantee outstanding quality products, the olive oil samples undergo a Complete Chemical Analysis in a chemical laboratory approved by the International Olive Oil Council, as well as an Organoleptic Test. The associated oil mills apply the highest quality standards and hold a relevant certification. The temperature for all production stages in the oil mill (kneading, centrifugation, separation) is carefully monitored in order not to exceed 28oC. During oil producing, the acidity varies from 0.2 to 0.3%. Both olive oil types possess all the natural nutrients as well as the superior taste of fresh extra virgin olive oil.
