EDITO Welcome to the world of sport, leisure and tourism in the Caribbean. Once again we have taken a good look at what’s new in our beautiful region to present the best and most attractive activities and reasons to visit the islands. Our latest journey to the sun took us to Aruba to visit the Aruba Beach Tennis Championships, an activity that has become a speciality of the island. This high-level event is generating a great deal of international enthusiasm. We also invite you to discover the Amstel Curaçao Race, an international cycling event for professional and amateur cyclists from all over the world. A unique opportunity to rub shoulders with international cycling stars such as the Schleck brothers and the current world campion, Mark Cavendish. Music, barbecue, swimming pool, beach and fun at the Lion Dive & Beach Resort in Curaçao. Our Focus for the Month looks at the Overseas Development day. The socio-economic world of France’s overseas regions (Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Martinique and Réunion) set off to meet the diaspora in Paris. And sport was on the agenda. We talk to Cyril Comte, the day’s President. Finally, the 2014 World Cup. The one everyone is waiting for. Play has begun in the Caribbean with the four-round qualifying tournament. Ultimately three teams will qualify and a fourth will take part in a play-off. We are crossing our fingers – the Caribbean teams have every chance. Presentation of the qualification procedure for the Concacaf zone. The tournament will be our guiding thread between now and October 2013.

Nous vous invitons également à découvrir l’Amstel Curaçao Race, critérium cycliste international pour professionnels et amateurs du monde entier. Une occasion unique de partager des moments privilégiés avec les stars internationales du vélo comme les frères Schleck ou le dernier Champion du monde Mark Cavendish. Musique, barbecue, piscine, plage et fun au Lion Dive & Beach Resort de Curaçao. Notre Focus du mois se porte sur la journée Outre-Mer Développement. Le monde socio-économique des Outremers (Guadeloupe, Guyane, Martinique et Réunion) partent à la rencontre de la diaspora à Paris. Et on parle de Sport. Rencontre avec Cyril COMTE le Président. Enfin Coupe du Monde 2014. Celle que nous attendons tant. Elle a démarré dans la Caraïbe avec le tournoi qualificatif qui se déroule en quatre Tour. Au final, 3 équipes seront qualifiés et une quatrième disputera un match de barrage. Croisons les doigts, les équipes de la Caraïbe ont toutes leurs chances. Présentation de la procédure de qualification de la zone Concacaf. Un tournoi que nous suivrons pour vous en fil rouge jusqu’au mois d’octobre 2013.

Un nuevo paseo bajo el sol nos condujo a Aruba, donde descubrimos el Torneo Internacional de Tenis de Playa, una actividad que se ha convertido en la especialidad de la isla, un acontecimiento de altísimo nivel que levanta auténticas pasiones en el mundo entero. Le invitamos a descubrir también el Amstel Curaçao Race, criterium internacional de ciclismo para profesionales y aficionados de todo el mundo. Una ocasión única de compartir momentos privilegiados con las estrellas del ciclismo internacional, como los hermanos Schleck o el vigente campeón del mundo, Mark Cavendish. Todo ello aderezado con música, barbacoas, piscina, playa y diversión a raudales en el Lion Dive & Beach Resort de Curazao. Nuestra sensación de este mes será la jornada de Desarrollo de Ultramar. El mundo socioeconómico de los territorios franceses de ultramar (Guadalupe, Guayana Francesa, Martinica y Reunión) se encontrará con la diáspora en París. Hablaremos también de deportes. Encuentro con Cyril COMTE, el presidente. Por último, la Copa del Mundo de 2014, la que tanto esperamos, que ya ha comenzado en el Caribe con el torneo de clasificación en cuatro rondas. Al final, se clasificarán 3 equipos y un cuarto equipo disputará un encuentro de precalificación. Toquemos madera, los equipos del Caribe tienen tantas posibilidades como los demás. Presentación del procedimiento de clasificación de la zona Concacaf, un torneo que seguiremos muy de cerca hasta el mes de octubre de 2013.

NEWS Daniel Sutridge with the Reggae Boyz? Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) General Secretary Horace Reid says they are looking into the possibility of inviting Chelsea forward Daniel Sturridge to join up with the Reggae Boyz ahead of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers, which will begin next year. Sturridge, who is also a former England Under-17 and Under-21 player, was in striking form last weekend, netting two goals -including the opener - in Chelsea’s 5-1 win over Bolton Wanderers in the English Premier League (EPL). «We have asked one of our representatives in the UK to speak to and, if possible, interview him so as to ascertain his linkages to Jamaica and interests in playing for the country,» Reid told The Gleaner. Forteen athleetes to represent Bermuda at Pan Am Games The Bermuda Olympic Association (BOA) officially announced the names of the athletes who will represent Bermuda at the XVI Pan American Games. Fourteen athletes will represent Bermuda in six sports. They are: Aquatics: Kiera Aitken, Lisa Blackburn,Roy-Allan Burch Athletics: Harold Houston, Shianne Smith Equestrian: Jillian Terceira, Patrick Nisbett Sailing: Malcolm Smith Tenpin Bowling: Damien Matthews, Dianne Jones, June Dill, LeVinc Samuels Triathlon: Flora Jane Duffy, Tyler Butterfield The above athletes, along with Chef-de-Mission Philip Guishard and officials, trainers and support personnel comprise the Bermuda team. Trinidad and Tobago Names 13 for Pan Am Games Trinidad and Tobago’s National Association of Athletics Administration (NAAA) recently announced the team that will represent the twin-island republic at the 2011 Pan American Games. Heading the list for the women’s team will be Cleopatra Borel, who will compete in the women’s shot put. Also in the women’s lineup will be Pilar McShine in the 1500m. In the men’s category Emmanuel Callender and Darrel Brown will both vie for places in the final of the men’s 100m, while Jamaal James, who will compete in the 800m men. Quincy Wilson, will contest the discus throw. Carifta record holder, Keshorn Walcott will compete in the men’s javelin event. NEWS Two new caps in Jamaica’s Super50 squad Uncapped players Jermaine Blackwood and Kenar Lewis have been selected in the Jamaica squad for this month’s West Indies Cricket Board’s Regional Super50 Championship in Guyana. Blackwood, a 19-year-old batsman, who bowls offspin, and Lewis, a 20-yearold opener, are two former Jamaica Under-19 players. “We have come up with a nice blend of youth and experience, and we are hoping that this team will give a good account of themselves during the tournament,” Chairman of the National Selection Panel Courtney Daley told Radio Jamaica. “It’s always nice to have Chris, he’s a fantastic player, he is one that can change any game and I am sure that the team will only be better for having him in the line-up.” The national selection panel has resisted the urge to recall long-standing opener Brenton Parchment, who was dropped for last year’s tournament, but performed fairly well throughout the national trial matches. He has however, been named as one of two reserves. They also decided to keep injured all-rounder David Bernard in cotton wool. He is still recovering from surgery on both knees. Left-arm fast bowler Sheldon Cotterell, who made a good impression during the Caribbean Twenty20 Championship, and young batsman Horace Miller have also been overlooked. Batsman Danza Hyatt and fast-medium bowler Andre Russell will be available after the West Indies OneDay International series in Bangladesh and they will replace two players in the squad. The squad also includes former West Indies batsman captain Chris Gayle, fellow opener Xavier Marshall, wicket-keeper Chadwick Walton, left-arm spinner Nikita Miller, as well as fast bowlers Jerome Taylor and Krishmar Santokie. The decision about the captaincy will be decided later this week with the leading contenders being Gayle and first-class captain Tamar Lambert. Jamaica will open their campaign against Leeward Islands on October 20, and will also play against Trinidad & Tobago and the Combined Campuses & Colleges during the tournament.

BFA President Anton Sealy has informed that the arrangement for Lesley St. Fleur to play with Sporting Central Academy of the NPL in Jamaica is to give him experience but also to deepen the depth of the local program. This is a visionary concept. It’s a given that our national teams are not at the level of Jamaica, Trinidad, Haïti and other leading soccer nations in the Caribbean. Long-serving Blazer to step down from CONCACAF La Chuck Blazer, the FIFA Executive Committee member who played a key role in exposing apparent corruption at the heart of global football administration earlier this year, is to resign as secretary general of the Confederation of North and Central American and Caribbean Football (CONCACAF). The 66-year-old American has served in the post since 1990 and will step down on December 31 of this year, just months after his bribery accusations against former CONCACAF president Jack Warner and Asian Football Confederation (AFC) president Mohamed bin Hammam rocked FIFA. Blazer said in May that Warner and Bin Hammam attempted to bribe Caribbean Football Union (CFU) officials with US$40,000 each to vote for Bin Hammam in the FIFA presidential election. Bin Hammam has since been banned for life by FIFA while Jack Warner resigned from the CFU. Sport Business

In 1954 the Club held its first edition of what would eventually become the longest consecutively held big game fishing tournament in the world! What started as an initiative by Chilo Bird to invite some friends from the banking industry in the United States, became a world-class event.
In our selection of essential sports tourism destinations, we could not honestly ignore the Aruba Beach Tennis Championships. A sport and leisure event whose success is due to both its format and its atmosphere.

Far from the big budgets deployed to organise sporting and tourism events designed to attract foreign participants, the island of Aruba is innovating in a discipline that is still young but promises great things for the future: Beach Tennis. Aruba was one of the first destinations to decide to organise an international beach tennis tournament. In fact, the destination has almost specialised in developing

It is played like tennis, on sand, according to the rules of beach volleyball, using appropriate racquets and a soft ball that does not bounce on the sand. Volleys between the two teams take place with no bounce and no passing between team members. Points are counted exactly as in tennis, 15, 30, 40 – except that a point won from 40/40 wins the game.
this discipline, which is barely known on the other Caribbean islands. The island has four permanent floodlit courts near the major hotels, open from 8 am to 10 pm. Beach tennis, a kind of cross between beach volleyball and tennis, is both a leisure activity and a competitive sport.

Everybody can Play Never short of ideas, the organisers have created a format designed to attract the big international players alongside amateurs who just want to enjoy themselves on the island’s wonderful beaches. This is how the Aruba Beach Tennis Championships were born. Prize money of 10,000 dollars, a festive atmosphere, the beach, beer (even in moderation), fun and music.
Open to all, the 2011 event promises once again to be a great success. 350 participants are expected to play at all levels. Countries including Bermuda, Brazil, Italy, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Venezuela and of course the USA will be represented. Five levels of competition are open: fun for beginners, advanced, pro, 50 plus and juniors. Finally there are two new events this year, singles and the Nations Cup, a competition confronting the countries against each other in all the disciplines.
To take part, you can register online. Note: you can only register for one category, unless you are registering for singles. You can enter the singles and Fun Mix tournaments, but not Fun Ladies and Fun Mix.

Rules and Regulations * Scoring is 15 - 30 - 40 and no-ad at deuce. * Only one hit per side, as in tennis and badminton. Unlike volleyball, there is no setting to your partner. * The ball may be served anywhere in the opponents court. Only one service attempt is allowed. If the ball touches the net, play continues. * Touching the net in any way or breaking the plane of the net that is, reaching over the net with your racquet, even on the follow through will result in a loss of the point. * Each match consists of one eight-game pro set. The match must be won by two games (e.g. 9-7). Aruba International Beach Tennis Tournament Le Beach Tennis est un sport en plein essor à travers le monde. Sur l’île d’Aruba, il est devenu un outil d’attraction et une des activités principale pour la plus grande joie des locaux et des visiteurs. Aruba s’est en effet positionnée comme destination beach tennis à travers notamment un tournoi international de Beach Tennis qui déplace des compétiteurs des Etats-unis, d’Europe et de la Caraïbe.. «Tout le monde peut jouer». La fête peut en effet être partagée de tous à tant pour la compétition que pour l’ambiance conviviale, le barbecue, la musique... tout ce qu’on aime....

Sport et outre-mer : un aller sans retour Il est rare que dans les Outre-mer le sport soit envisagé comme un acteur voir un vecteur de développement. Pour son édition 2011, la Journée Outre-Mer Développement a mis le sujet sur le devant de la scène afin de créer le débat autour de l’industrie du sport. l’occasion de permettre à certains de ceux qui ont fait ou qui font du sport des Outremer un modèle pour le sport français d’échanger autour de quelques questions. Nous avons rencontré Cyril COMTE, son Président afin qu’il nous présente cet atelier ô combien inédit

FOCUS Pouvez-vous nous expliquer comment est né cette idée de créer une journée pour parler du développement de l’Outre-Mer hors de nos territoires? La journée Outre-Mer Développement est parti de l’idée qu’il y avait très peu de contacts entre la diaspora, les talents de l’Outremer en métropole et le monde socio-économique qui y travaille. C’est l’occasion en une seule journée, en un seul lieu, de rencontrer des gens de la réunion, de la guyane, de la martinique, de la guadeloupe et parfois même de plus loin pour parler économie, société et carrière. C’est une journée de conférence et de networking où des entreprises partenaires ont des stands et peuvent accueillir des candidats qui se mobilisent dans le cadre des ressources humaines autour de cet événement. Partir à la rencontre des étudiants de l’enseignement supérieurs, des professionnels et tous ceux qui sont intérréssés par l’outre-mer et souhaitent y travailler. Vous y traitez de nombreux sujets, comment et par qui sont choisis les thèmes? L’équipe organisatrice les choisit en fonction de son ressenti sur les sujets importants auxquels les gens veulent avoir des réponses. Cette année le thème général c’est «tomber les mûrs» et autour de cette thématique générale nous avons une série d’ateliers qui traitent sous plein d’angles différents de notre économie et de notre société. Nous parlons cette année d’énergie, de l’industrie du sport, de la jeunesse et de la manière de lui construire un avenir, de l’histoire de nos outremers, comment elle est vécu et surtout comment s’appuyer sur cette histoire pour partir de l’avant. On parle de réalisateurs, comment la caméra permet de percer les mûrs et d’autres activités de compétitivité.
Essayer de réfléchir à la façon dont l’industrie du sport peut être développé Et cette année, vous avez fait le choix d’aborder le sport. Le sport est un atout pour les Outremer et il important de se demander comment il peut devenir une industrie plus qu’aujourd’hui. L’outre-mer produit beaucoup de sportifs mais peut ou pas suffisamment d’industrie
liée au sport. Il n’y a pas vraiment de marque sportive associée à l’Outremer, on n’a pas de grands événements sportifs qui créent de la valeur ajoutée, on a peu d’infrastructures. Le sport en outremer est conduit par des associations à but non lucratifs, par des passionnés, mais les fédérations nationales investissent peu en outremer pour leurs activités de détection et de formation. Ce n’est pas tout à fait juste au regard de la contribution de l’outremer au sport national. On essaie de mettre en avant ce problème.

FOCUS Vous avez quand même réussit à mobiliser des intervenants de qualité? Oui nous avons de belles têtes d’affiche comme Bernard LAMA champion du monde 1998, M. SOREL Président du CROSGUA, Christophe MICHAEL conseiller Outre-mer auprès de la ministre de la Jeunesse et des sports, Simon JEAN-JOSEPH le champion de sport automobile et qui a lié le sport en Outre-mer et le sport sur le territoire national. Le tout sera animé par un journaliste sportif expert du sport Outremer Nicolas Bouiges qui reviendra des Jeux du Pacifique. Cela ne permettra pas de résoudre tous les problèmes du sport en Outre-mer, mais on posera le problème et toutes ces tables rondes sont faites pour ouvrir des discussions, faire naître des idées, créer des contacts et des envies et contribuer aux changements dans notre monde ultra-marin.
Quel public espérez-vous pour cette édition 2010? Une soixantaine d’intervenants pour nous l’espérons entre 800 et 1000 conférenciers qui vont participer à cette journée du 03 septembre de 8h30 à 20h au pavillon Gabriel à Paris. C’est le seul événement économique et social de l’année des Outre-mers et cela lui donne une valeur particulière, de ce fait il a obtenu le haut patronage du Président de la République, ce que peut d’événements ont obtenus au cours de l’année.
Comment avez-vous procédé au choix des intervenants sur cette thématique sport. Ils ont été choisis en fonction de leur notoriété, et à chaque fois dans les ateliers ont essaie d’avoir un équilibre de représentation des différents territoires. Il y a des convergences, mais il y a aussi des divergences et c’est ce qui fait la richesse de la journée outre-mer développement. On essaie donc d’avoir de la diversité, après il y a ceux qui en comprennent l’importance ou pas et ceux qui peuvent se libérer. La Journée Outre-mer développement est un jeune événement que tout le monde ne connait pas et on n’est pas toujours en mesure de convaincre les personnalités de s’y intéresser.

Pendant les 15 jours qui ont suivi, nous avons également eu des rediffusions en prime time des meilleurs moments dans chaque fuseau horaire et en afrique francophone, ainsi qu’une retransmission en direct sur livestream sur internet. Ensuite comme pour les deux premières éditions, les interventions de chacun ont été enregistrés pour être visionnés sur notre chaîne JOMD sur Utube. Cela nous fait une belle base documentaire vidéos des décideurs de leaders de l’Outre-mer qui peut être consulter à tout moment et de ce point de vue c’est assez innovant. Un moyen de mettre un visage sur un nom pour la diaspora
The Overseas Development Day (JOMD) is an annual event in which the socio-economic world from the French overseas regions (Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Martinique and Réunion) come to meet the diaspora in Paris. Many topics are discussed at these meetings, which, as pointed out by Cyril Comte, the JOMD President, are designed to stimulate debate. This year, the subject of Sport was on the agenda, with contributions from French overseas sporting personalities such as Bernard Lama, Simon JeanJoseph and Sandrine Gruda. A strong theme: Sport and the Overseas regions: a one-way journey.
Pourquoi ne pas avoir organisé cet événement dans les territoires d’Outre-Mer où on a souvent l’impression d’un manque d’échange entre le monde socio-économique et la population? On nous fait souvent le reprôche que cette manifestation ne soit pas organisée en Martinique, mais le monde socio-économique est en Martinique. Il faut toutefois reconnaitre qu’il n’y a sûrement pas assez d’événement pour impliquer les jeunes et la population dans la vie économique et social. Il y a pourtant des actions qui sont menées. En tant qu’ancien Président du Médef mon organisation a toujours été très soucieuse d’ouvrir ce type de débat. Maintenant, peut-être manque-t’il un bel événement comme celui-là pour lui donner plus de substance. En tous cas, chez nous ces occasions existent. Tandis que sur la métropole il n’y avait rien. Le but est donc d’avoir un discours privilégié pour la diaspora. Cela n’empêche qu’il y ai sûrement des initiatives à prendre localement et il est clair que la Martinique ne se caractèrise pas encore par un vrais consensus des socio-professionnels, des politiques et des syndicats autour de ces thèmes là. On the Road to Brazil 2014 Brazil will definitely be the home of football in 2014. This will be a great year for world football, and an added incentive to take part in the world’s biggest football tournament in the country where football is king. The qualifying rounds for the 2014 Brazilian World Cup have already begun in our region. Here we explain the long road that will take the Caribbean teams to the World Cup in Brazil in June 2014. By the end, only three will be left. Fingers crossed that at least one team from the Caribbean will be travelling to the country of King Pele in October 2013. The Caribbean teams belong to the group of North and Central America and the Caribbean, which includes 35 member associations and thus 35 teams in contention for 3.5 qualifying places, 3 qualifying directly for Brazil and 1 chosen for the play-off.

La plus grande fête cycliste de l’année L’Amstel Curaçao Race est un critérium d’exhibition organisé par Le Lions Dive & Beach Resort de Curaçao. Sa particularité est d’attirer les plus grandes stars du cyclisme mondial. De ceux qui trônent sur le podium du Tour de France, qui trustent les titres de champions du Monde, bref les meilleurs.
Tenez-vous bien, au palmarès de la Course, Oscar Freire, Tom Boonen, Alejandro Valverde, Alberto Contador, Andy Schleck, Franck Schleck entre autres. En 2010, 291 coureurs étaient au départ, professionnels, locaux, amateurs ont partagé quelques coups de pédales le long des 73,6 km. L’histoire retiendra que c’est à l’occasion de l’Amstel Curaçao Race 2010 que les frères Schleck ont porté pour la dernière fois le maillot de la Saxo Bank.

In France there is a paramedical speciality known as psychomotor education, based on the unity of the physical and the psychological. Psychomotor specialists work with anyone of any age, from babies to elderly people, with bodily and physical motor difficulties resulting from poor function or an imbalance.
Il existe en France une spécialité paramédical nommée psychomotricité basé sur le concept : unité sport psychisme. Les psychomotricien interviennent auprès de toute personne du nouveau né à la personne âgée qui présentent des difficultés de motricité, corporels et physiques qui découlent d’un dysfonctionnement ou d’un déséquilibre.

Note that we are talking about physical activity rather than sport. Children up to the age of 9 or 10 should practise a physical activity that enables them to move their whole body in space and apply the fundamental motor behaviours – walking, running, jumping, throwing – but also presents a social aspect (rules, working as a group etc.) outside school. Swimming, athletics, judo and gymnastics are the most recommended activities, as long as they remain within a context of discovery and play. In any case, this physical activity must correspond to and evolve at the same rate as the child’s mental maturity.

Un enfant jusqu’à l’âge de 9 ou 10 ans doit pratiquer une activité physique qui lui permet de mettre en pratique tout son corps dans l’espace et de mettre en oeuvre les conduites motrices de base que sont marcher, courir, sauter, lancer... mais également de rentrer dans une socialisation (règles, vie de groupe...) à côté de l’école. La nation, l’athlétisme, le judo, la gymnastique sont les activités les plus conseillées à conditions qu’elles restent dans un cadre de découverte et de jeux. En tout état de cause, cette activité physique doit correspondre et évoluer au même rythme que la maturité psychique de l’enfant.
It is a misconception to advocate accumulating physical activities for your child so that he or she will move a great deal and be tired out. The effect is actually the opposite. The child will associate physical activity with a means of existing. Instead, focus on the quality of the activity, and spread it out (once or twice a week). One physical activity and one artistic activity represent the ideal balance.

CÓMO ACERTAR AL ELEGIR LA ACTIVIDAD FÍSICA DE SUS HIJOS En Francia existe una especialidad paramédica denominada psicomotricidad, la cual se basa en el concepto de que el deporte y el aspecto psíquico están estrechamente relacionados. Los especialistas en psicomotricidad trabajan con personas de todas las edades, desde recién nacidos hasta ancianos, que presentan dificultades motrices, corporales y psíquicas asociadas a un trastorno o a un desequilibrio. Nuestro especialista en psicomotricidad, que asimismo es titulado en deportes y salud y ejerce como monitor deportivo, nos habla este mes de cómo elegir una actividad deportiva para nuestros hijos. Obsérvese que hablamos de actividad psíquica y no de deporte. Hasta los 9 o 10 años, los niños deben practicar una actividad psíquica que les permita utilizar todo su cuerpo en el espacio y desplegar todos los comportamientos de motricidad básicos, como caminar, correr, saltar, lanzar... además de participar en la socialización (reglas, vida en grupo...) al margen de la escuela. La natación, el atletismo, el judo y la gimnasia son las actividades más recomendadas, a condición de que se practiquen como un descubrimiento y un juego. En cualquier caso, esta actividad psíquica debe ir en armonía y evolucionar al mismo ritmo que la madurez psíquica del niño. Parece buena idea... pero no lo es: ofrecer muchas actividades psíquicas exigentes a un niño muy inquieto para que se canse y se tranquilice; el efecto obtenido es adverso, ya que el niño asociará la actividad psíquica a una manera de existir. Cómo proceder: privilegiar la calidad de las actividades que se practiquen, distribuirlas bien (1 o 2 a la semana). La combinación de una actividad psíquica con una actividad artística representaría el equilibrio ideal..

The Caribbean destination is Rodney Bay in Saint Lucia, one of the most beautiful islands in the Lesser Antilles.
