EDITO ONCE YOU GO, YOU KNOW... This would definitely be a very apt slogan for the Reggae Marathon. You have to experience a Reggae Marathon to understand why those in the know cannot get enough, coming back every year to run along Negril’s beaches. It is one of the most beautiful sporting events in the Caribbean, the most famous race in the region and one of the top ten running destinations in the world. We have tasted its delights, and this year once again we have given in to the temptation to present it as THE event of early December. Our feature section focuses on the Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico. At the games for the American continent and the Caribbean, Cuba once again confirmed that this small island is a BIG sporting nation, with medals to prove it. We also give a nod to St Lucia, which is preparing to welcome the ARC competitors. They will be leaving Gran Canaria on 20 November, arriving at the island by mid-December. Another extraordinary event with wonderful support from the St Lucia Tourist Office. Moving to the island’s French neighbour, Martinique, the legendary Tommie Smith came to inaugurate a work by artist Claude Cauquil commemorating his salute at the Mexican Olympics in 1968. We take a very worthwhile look back at the inspirational life of this exceptional man and excellent athlete, who looked beyond his personal success and his own achievements to carry a universal message as high, as far and as strongly as he could. Not forgetting our continuing coverage of the zone’s elimination tournament, whose dénouement took place yesterday, with its share of surprises – happy for some, very bitter for many others. ONCE YOU GO, YOU KNOW... C’est sans doute le sloggan qui cole le plus au Reggae Marathon. Il faut vivre un Reggae Marathon pour comprendre pourquoi ceux qui l’ont connu ne peuvent s’en démordre et reviennent chaque année courir le long des plages de Negril pour l’un des plus beaux événements sportifs de la Caraïbe, le plus célèbre événement running de la région, l’une des dix meilleures destinations running au monde. Nous aussi, nous y avons mordu et avons cette année encore céder à l’envie de vous le présenter comme l’événement de ce début du mois de décembre. Dans notre rubrique reportage retrouvé les Jeux Panaméricains de Guadelajara au Mexique. Les jeux du continent américain et de la Caraïbe où une fois de plus Cuba a apporté la preuve, médailles à l’appui, que cette petite île est une GRANDE nation sportive. Un petit clin d’oeuil à Saint Lucie, qui se prépare à accueillir les concurrents de l’ARC qui partiront le 20 novembre des Grandes Canaris pour arriver mi-décembre sur l’île. Encore un événement hors du commun parfaitement accompagné par l’Office de Tourisme de St. Lucie. Focus sur sa voisine française, la Martinique où la légende Tommie Smith est venu inauguré une oeuvre de l’artiste Claude CAUQUIL commémorant son geste de revendication lors des J.O de Mexico en 1968. Petit retour en arrière historique ô combien profitable, et riche en enseignement de cet homme exceptionnel, excellent athlète, qui a fait abstraction de sa réussite personnel, de ses propres exploits; pour porter plus haut, plus loin, plus fort, un message universel. Sans oublier notre fil rouge sur le Tournoi éliminatoire de la zone dont le dénouement c’est joué hier et qui apporté son lot de surprises bonnes pour certains, mais au goût très amer pour beaucoup d’autres. Hay que vivirla para entender por qué quienes la han disfrutado ya no pueden vivir sin ella y vuelven cada año a correr por las playas de Negril en uno de los más bellos acontecimientos deportivos del Caribe, la carrera más celebre de la región y una de las diez mejores del mundo. Nosotros también hemos picado el anzuelo y este año hemos vuelto a caer en la tentación de presentárselo a ustedes como el acontecimiento estrella de principios de diciembre. En nuestra sección de reportajes, les presentamos los Juegos Panamericanos de Guadalajara, México. Los juegos del continente americano y del Caribe en los que una vez más, Cuba ha demostrado a base de medallas que esta pequeña isla es una GRAN nación deportiva. Un guiño a Santa Lucía, que se prepara para recibir a los participantes en el ARC, los cuales llegarán a mediados de diciembre desde Gran Canaria (salida el 20 de noviembre). Un nuevo acontecimiento extraordinario perfectamente canalizado por la Oficina de Turismo de Santa Lucía. Seguidamente, nuestra atención se centrará en su vecina francesa, Martinica, adonde el legendario Tommie Smith ha acudido para inaugurar una obra del artista Claude Cauquil en conmemoración de su gesto reivindicatorio durante las olimpiadas de México en 1968. Un vistazo hacia atrás que invita poderosamente a la reflexión, con un hombre excepcional y sobresaliente atleta que dejó de lado su éxito y sus logros personales para transmitir con cada vez más intensidad un mensaje universal. Tampoco nos olvidamos de destacar el torneo eliminatorio de la zona, cuyo recentísimo desenlace ha dejado un dulce gusto a unos y amargo a muchos otros. NEWS Equipo Cubano de voleibol (m) a Copa Mundial de Japon Equipo cubano de voleibol (m) a Copa Mundial de Japón EL EQUIPO masculino de voleibol competirá en la Copa del Mundo que tendrá lugar en Japón a partir del próximo día 20 donde intentará buscar su boleto para los Juegos Olímpicos Londres 2012. Según el calendario la selección cubana jugará la primera ronda en el grupo A con asiento en la ciudad de Nagoya y debutará el día 20 frente al elenco polaco. Un día más tarde se medirán con Irán y cerrarán esa primera fase ante los anfitriones. Luego jugarán en Osaka la segunda ronda, que comienzan con un duelo frente a Argentina el día 24, antes de sellar el segmento enfrentando a Serbia. La tercera parte continuará en la urbe de Hamamatsu el 27, y allí los rivales serán Italia, Brasil y Rusia. El periplo terminará en Tokio desde el 2 de diciembre, con los enfrentamientos con China, Estados Unidos y Egipto, por ese orden. Atlantic launches Real Madrid School Spanish football giants, Real Madrid, in collaboration with Atlantic LNG and the Ron La Forest Football Academy officially launched the Atlantic Real Madrid Foundation Social Sports School at Jaffa at the Oval restaurant at Queen’s Park Oval, St Clair, on Saturday. The event was attended by former Real Madrid great Emilio Butragueno, Spanish ambassador to T&T, Joaquin de Arisregui Laborde, Minister of Sport Anil Roberts and Atlantic LNG head of sustainability and corporate communications Caroline SirjuRamnarine. The school, which has operations in 35 other countries, will be based at St Dominic’s Home in Belmont. According to Sirju-Ramnarine, who gave the feature address, the foundation is part of an initiative to establish opportunities for underprivileged children between the ages of eight and 14 years, partly to become acquainted with the

The Tobago Junior Golf Academy to organize one international Golf tourney The Tobago Junior Golf Academy will host another major golf tournament in 2012, the Caribbean Connection International Pro-Am golf tournament. The event is carded for the Mt Irvine Golf Course from Jan 3-7.Earlier this year, the vibrant organisation led by Fitz Neptune hosted the Tobago International Easter Golf tournament from which one of the juniors Mikail Roberts who was successful in the tournament enjoyed a six-week stint at the CORE Golf Academy in the United States. Over 160 golfers including 30 pros from the United States, Europe and the Caribbean are expected to participate. However, only eight Trinidadians and four Tobagonians are expected to be in the fray.The champion for the Individual Professional category will receive US$25,000 while the winning Pro Am team will collect US$25,000.Neptune told the Tobago News that one of the major sponsors is in the process of trying to negotiate with ESPN, one of the United States major sports channel to cover the event. He added that if they are successful this will be a major boost for sports tourism on the island. L’équipe de France Féminin débute sa tournée aux Antilles L’Equipe de France féminine a entamé sa tournée promotionnelle en Guadeloupe et en Martinique où elles affronteront l’Uruguay et le Mexique. Une tournée particulière pour les antillaises de l’équipe de France, Laura Georges et Elodie Thomis. A son arrivée en Guadeloupe, Laura Georges n’a pas cachée sa joie «C’est la terre d’origine de mes parents qui y sont nés et y ont vécus. J’ai encore mes grands-parents maternels ici. Je vais honorer ma 110e sélection ici. C’est un chiffre rond à domicile, forcément je serai très contente, en plus mes proches ont fait le voyage, mon père, mon compagnon... Ca tenait à coeur à mon père de me voir jouer dans son île. Donc oui, gagner ce soir et marquer, pour moi, ce serait l’idéal !» Une tournée au goût de récompense pour toutes l’équipe après ses bons résultats au mondial féminin ainsi que dans le début des éliminatoires au Championnat d’Europe. Golf Legend Hin Bermuda for For Mid Ocean Tournament With a golf handicap that still seems to be in inverse proportion to his age, a 92-year-old US amateur golfing legend is currently back in Bermuda for the Mid Ocean Club Men’s Invitational. Kentucky native Harreld Kirkpatrick [pictured] has played in all the major tournaments — Masters, US Open, British Open, US Amateur Championship and the British Amateur Championship — open to an amateur. “I am proud to call Harreld friend and to list him among my mentors,” said Bermuda professional golfer Kim Swan. “I’m happy to welcome him back to Bermuda.” Mr. Kirkpatrick, who has participated in numerous Bermuda tournaments over the years, has won over 100 golf tournaments during his competitive amateur golf career, including the 1953 and 1954 Kentucky Amateur Championships. NEWS Cayman Islands Triathlon A total of 108 individuals (55 Olympic distance, 53 Sprint distance) and 16 teams (13 Olympic, 3 Sprint) took part in the 2011 Cayman Islands Triathlon on Sunday, November 6th. Marius Acker (2h9m37s) and Pam Abbott (2h26m31s) won the Olympic distance (1500m swim, 40 km bike, 10 km run). deGregory-Doherty, Nesbitt, McPhee to be inducted into National Hall of Fame Three local sports icons Anita Degregory-Doherty, Derek «Bookie» Nesbitt and Gladstone «Moon» Mcphee will be inducted into the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture National Hall of Fame Class of 2011 at the induction ceremony this evening at Government House in New Providence. Degregory–Doherty received her primary education at West End All-age school and began her secondary education at Hamptons Girls School in Jamaica, where she was the U16 and U18 tennis champion and later on in 1967 entered Ulster College of Physical Education in Northern Island, where she excelled in Netball. During her sporting career, Doherty represented Jamaica, Ireland and The Bahamas in field hockey, tennis, softball, Netball and in 1970 represented The Bahamas in the Commonwealth Games in Track and Field in Edinborough, Scotland. Cuba conserva liderato de ranking mundial de béisbol CUBA conservó el primer lugar del ranking mundial de béisbol, anunció ayer la Federación Internacional de ese deporte (IBAF). Pese a cumplir un 2011 para el olvido, sin títulos en certámenes de primer nivel, el equipo cubano pudo mantenerse en la cima por delante de Estados Unidos, Surcorea y Japón, segundo, tercero y cuarto, respectivamente. Cuba quedó subcampeón en la XXXIX Copa Mundial de béisbol, celebrada en Panamá del 1 al 15 de octubre pasado. Joy of six in CONCACAF The first round of group-stage action in North, Central America and the Caribbean was a festival of shocks as two Caribbean powers tumbled out to ignominiously early exits. While some stars faded, others like Antigua and Barbuda and Guyana set their sights on the heavens. Canada, El Salvador, Guatemala and Panama all did what was expected, booking their place in the next round of qualifying for the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™.

The surprises A quick look at Groups B and F back in August would have led any sane observer of the CONCACAF scene to tap Trinidad and Tobago and Haiti for an easy road to the next round. But Guyana and Antigua and Barbuda had other ideas. The Trinidadians, participants at the 2006 FIFA World Cup and now coached by German tactician Otto Pfister, saw their campaign begin to unravel with a loss to lowly Bermuda. Guyana took full advantage with a 2-1 win on the penultimate matchday that took them through to the semi-final group stage at the expense of the star-studded Soca Warriors and their much-heralded captain Kenwyne Jones. This is the first time since the qualifiers for Spain 1982 that T&T have failed to reach the semi-final round. Arguably an even greater triumph was pulled off by Antigua and Barbuda, a tiny Caribbean island chain of just under 90,000 people. Coached by young English ace Tom Curtis, and with a recent injection of some muchneeded professionalism into the country’s football, the Boyz made easy meat of lesser lights Curacao and US Virgin Islands before edging mighty Haiti on the allimportant penultimate day. The triumph was celebrated in St John’s with an enthusiasm and pride befitting the biggest day in the nation’s sporting history.

El Salvador ran away with Group A, winning all of their games against Suriname, the Dominican Republic and the Cayman Islands. Guyana’s Golden Jaguars were a cut above in Group B, where they shocked Trinidad and Tobago, Bermuda and Barbados. Panama – semi-finalists from last year’s CONCACAF Gold Cup – finished easily in first place in Group C, which contained only three teams after the Bahamas’ withdrawal early on. Over in Group D, Canada were inspired by old pro Dwayne De Rosario as they bested an all-Caribbean trio of St. Kitts and Nevis, Puerto Rico and St. Lucia. Central America demi-powers Guatemala strolled through Group E with a perfect six wins from six, alltime top scorer Carlos Ruiz added attacking panache and experience. Group F was ruled by tiny Antigua and Barbuda, who despite being “big underdogs” according to coach Curtis, sent Caribbean giants Haiti packing.

Le second tour du tournoi qualificatif à la Coupe du Monde 2014 au Brésil c’est achevé le mardi 15 novembre. A l’arrivée de grosses surprises dont les éliminations surprise d’Haïti et de Trinidad & Tobago. Les Trinidadiens qui semblaient s’être tracés une voie royale vers le 3ème tour ont été viancus et éliminés par le Guyana. Pour la première fois depuis 1982 les Soca Warriors n’atteindrons pas les demi-finales. Les Haïtiens pour leur part céderons leur place à Antigua & Barbuda ququi il est vrais a pratiqué d’une qualité exceptionnelle inscrivant 26 buts dans cette secconde phase. Rendez-vous dès lors au mois de Juin 2012 avec l’entrée ne lice notamment de Cuba et de nos Reggae Boyz.

It’s a real mission for the organisers to provide the best of what Jamaica has to offer in terms of sport, music and tourism every year, all combined with a festive, friendly atmosphere.

The Reggae Marathon is undoubtedly a model for sporting events with a tourism dimension. The organisers have done everything possible to attract participants from other countries. They have the help of the Jamaica Tourist Board, but above all they have succeeded in winning the lasting support of American Airlines, proving the quality and ambition of the organisation. Simply because «Once a Jamdammer, always a Jamdammer» – the event has something enchanting, captivating and enthralling about it. A breathtaking environment, a welcome you might expect from a close friend, the sunshine, the shimmering colours of Jamaica and good music before, during and after the race (ed.: you might almost be tempted to stop running to give way to the music …). A Christmas crafts village so that you can bring something of the dream back home, the «Pasta Party» (again, certainly one of the best in the world) … all this is the Reggae Marathon.

The Reggae Marathon is also a high-level competition on the IAAF calendar (International Association of Athletics Federations) and a member of AIMS (Association of International Marathons). This means sport for all, with a marathon, a half-marathon and a 10 km race. Not to mention champions of all levels to measure yourself against if you enjoy competition.As a guide, the men’s marathon record has been held since 2001 by Pamenos Ballentyne from St Vincent with a time of 2:21:05, and the women’s record, held by the Russian Ramilia Burangulova, is 2:42:25.

Many international tour operators offer packages for the Reggae Marathon. By plane: Negril is 49 km from Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay. The Montego Bay airport is served by 32 airlines including American Airlines, Air Canada, Virgin Atlantic, US Airways, Continental and Air Jamaica, flying from the United States, Europe, Canada and several Caribbean islands. Some hotels offer shuttles from Montego Bay to Negril. Domestic flights are also available from Kingston. Norman Manley Airport in Kingston is a destination for flights from Air Canada, Air Jamaica, American Airlines, British Airways etc. Caribbean Airlines from St Martin and Barbados (for the French West Indies).

Maria Gooding to race in Jamaica Sunday National female Olympic triathlon champion, Maria Gooding, 22, heads out today (Thursday) to take on the Jamaica Triathlon at 7am on Sunday morning. Gooding, sponsored by SporTT, Caribbean Airlines, Millenium Auto Dealership and Rainbow Warriors Triathlon Club, will be the only local triathlete taking on this challenge. The COSTATT Graphic artist student is hoping to improve on her injury-plague performance during the National Championships two weeks when she limped home in three hours ten minutes. “I started having a lot of pain in my right knee during the 10km run, after swimming 1,500m and cycling for 40km,” she said, with disappointment. “But I visited a doctor afterwards and was told that there were several things I might have to do, including taking an MRI. “However, I have been icing it and resting. I did run this week and felt no pain, so hopefully things will be fine on Sunday. I am going to make sure and finish and show up the red, white and black at the finish line.” Maria will be back home in time to team up with her brother Jason, De Wayne Smith and Salome Buglass as RWTC Earthquake to compete in the Tag Team Triathlon relay at Las Cuevas, on November 20. Fourteen four-member teams are already registered for this exciting 20/20 version of Triathlon.

Né le 6 juin 1944, jour du débarquement américain en Normandie, à Clarksville au Texas, Tommie Smith est le septième d’une famille de douze enfants. Surnommé Tommie jet, il fut l’un des meilleurs athlètes de tous les temps sur 200 mètres, mais il est surtout resté célèbre pour avoir protesté avec son compatriote John Carlos contre les discriminations dont étaient victimes les Noirs aux États-Unis sur le podium du 200 mètres des Jeux olympiques d’été de 1968 à Mexico.

Etudiant en sociologie à l’université d’Etat de San josé où il s’entraine avec ces compatriotes Lee Evans et Jhon Carlos, il survole le 200 et le 400 mètres entre 1965 et 1968. C’est d’ailleurs dans cette ville qu’il battra en 1966 le record du monde du 200 en 19,5s, record qu’il détiendra pendant 44 ans, battu en mai 2010 par Tyson Gay. Le 11 juin 1966 à Sacramento il bat le record du monde du 220 yards avec virage en 20 s 0. La encore, ce temps est également le nouveau record du monde du 200 m bien qu’il ait couru un peu plus que la distance. Toujours en 1966, le 25 juillet à Los Angeles, il bat le record du monde du Relais 4 x 400 mètres avec l’équipe nationale américaine en 2 m 59 s 6. C’est la première fois que l’on descend sous les 3 minutes dans cette discipline.

Le 20 mai 1967 à San José il s’approprie dans la même course le record du monde du 440 yards (402m34) en 44 s 8, et le record du 400 mètres en 44 s 5. Il semble capable de faire bien mieux sur cette distance, mais il préfère se concentrer sur le 200 mètres. Au total, durant sa période universitaire, il égalera ou dépassera treize records mondiaux1 et sera reconnu « Most Valuable Athlete » (meilleur athlète) trois années consécutives en basket-ball, football américain et athlétisme. FOCUS Après avoir passé son baccalauréat en arts de sociologie avec comme spécialité la science militaire et l’éducation physique auprès de l’université d’État de San José, Tommie Smith reçu sa maîtrise en sociologie à GoddardCambridge, Boston.

Aux Jeux olympiques de 1968 à Mexico, le programme ne lui permet pas de s’aligner sur le 400 mètres. Sur le 200 m des sélections olympiques américaines, il est battu par John Carlos, en 19 s 9 contre 19 s 7 pour Carlos (19 s 98 électroniques). Ce temps n’est pas homologué comme record du monde, car Smith et Carlos portent des chaussures spéciales, interdites par le règlement. À Mexico, le duel entre les deux hommes est très attendu, d’autant que Carlos est aussi le champion en titre du 200 mètres aux Jeux panaméricains de 1967.

C’est donc après une course sous tension extrème que Tommie Smith remporte le 200 m olympique, le 16 octobre 1968 devant l’Australien Peter Norman en 20s 06 et son compatriote Jhon Carlos 20s 10. C’est donc un athlète qui n’avait pas besoin d’une reconnaissance supplémentaire ni d’une montée d’adrénaline qui se présente sur le podium des Jeux Olympique le 17 Ocotbre 1968.

Stand for Victory un geste historique «Stand fo Victory» Un grand geste pour l’humanité Lors de la montée sur le podium le 17 octobre, Tommie Smith porte des chaussettes noires montantes. Les trois athlètes reçoivent leur médailles et les félicitations des officiels, et l’hymne américain retentit dans le stade. A ce moment, Thommie Smith et Jhon Carlos baissent la tête e lèvent un poing ganté de noir... la suite en vidéo.

Pour l’annecdote (John Carlos l’accompagne en levant son autre poing portant l’autre gant de Tommie Smith,lui même ayant oublié les siens). Smith qui se revendiquait de l’Olympic Project for Human Rights, qui proposait un boycott des Jeux olympiques par les athlètes afro-américains tant que leurs droits civils ne seraient pas respectés, n’a jamais lié son geste aux Black Panthers Party.

Une place au Hall of Fame Smith & Carlos ont du attendre quelques années pour que la portée et le symbole de leur geste soit reconnus, même aux Etats-Unis où ils ont souvent fait l’objet de menaces de mort. Malgré ses onze records du monde obtenus, ce n’est qu’en 1978 qu’il est intronisé au Hall of Fame américain de l’athlétisme et en 1995 au Hall of Fame afro-américain de Californie du sport. Le grand public quand à lui découvrira en aôut 1999 les images et surtout les mots Tommie Smith à l’occasion de la diffusion sur la chaîne américaine HBO dans un documentaire titré : «Fists of Freedom: The Story of the ’68 summer Games» (Les poingts de la liberté: l’histoire des Jeux d’été de 1968) En 2004 Tommie Smith inaugure à Saint-Ouen, ille bienconnue des Domiens, un gymnase à son nom. En 2005 à San José, l’artiste Rigo 23 réaliser à l’université d’État de San José une statut commémorant le geste de Tommie Smith et de John Carlos. À la place du numéro 2, celle où se tenait l’Australien Peter Norman, on peut voir une plaque qui rend hommage au soutien de Peter Norman pour ses collègues athlètes, et qui invite le passant à prendre parti en prenant la place et en devenant un acteur de la statue. santacruz.indymedia.org

Le 17 mars 2007, La Courneuve donne son nom à la Maison des Sports inaugurée aussi en sa présence13 et Smith publie son autobiographie intitulée Silent Gesture avec l’écrivain David Steele. En juillet 2008, Tommie Smith et John Carlos reçoivent le Arthur Ashe Award for Courage en hommage à leur geste.

Cela n’empêchera pas le Président du Comité International Olympique (CIO) de l’époque d’interpréter le geste comme une protestation politique qui n’avait pas sa place dans un événement apolitique tels que le sont les Jeux Olympiques. Il demandera la suspension de l’américaine et le renvoie du village Olympique de Smith & Carlos. L’athlète américaine Wyomia Tyus, remportant à Mexico le titre du 100 mètres féminin qu’elle défendait après l’avoir remporté aux Jeux olympiques d’été de 1964 offrit ses médailles d’or de cette épreuve et du relais 4 x 100 mètres à Smith et Carlos pour leur geste.

En août 2008, Tommie Smith donne comme cadeau d’anniversaire au triple médaillé d’athlétisme aux Jeux olympiques d’été de 2008 de Pékin Usain Bolt une des chaussures qu’il portait aux Jeux olympiques d’été de 1968. En octobre 2010, il met en vente sa médaille d’or olympique à une enchère de départ de 250 000 dollars. Novembre 2011 Tommie Smith vient inauguré à la Martinique, une oeuvre réalisé en son honneur par l’artiste Claude CAUQUIL.

The American athlete Tommie Smith paid a visit to Martinique to inaugurate a work by the artist Claude Cauquil. The statue, nearly eight metres high, commemorates the highly symbolic gesture of the champion’s black-gloved fist pointing to the sky. Tommie Smith and John Carlos made this gesture in 1968 at the Mexico Olympics, in support of black rights in their country.

La estatua, de casi ocho metros de altura, conmemora el audaz gesto simbólico del campeón, al alzar hacia el cielo su puño cubierto con un guante negro. La mayor competición polideportiva del año Del 14 al 16 de octubre tuvo lugar en Guadalajara, Jalisco, México, la 16ª edición de los Juegos Panamericanos, la más importante competición polideportiva americana de alto nivel. Participaron 41 naciones y 6.003 atletas de 36 disciplinas diferentes. Este año en concreto, la competición ha servido a muchos países de lanzadera hacia los Juegos Olímpicos de Londres, nueve meses antes de la celebración de éstos.

México, organizadora de los Juegos Panamericanos por tercera vez Por tercera vez en la historia, tras las ediciones de 1955 y 1975 en México, este país ha vuelto a recibir a las delegaciones de América del Norte, del Sur y del Caribe con ocasión de la gran fiesta deportiva del continente. Tras la decepción de 2003 al perder frente a Santo Domingo, la ciudad de Guadalajara fue la única candidata en 2011 y obviamente fue seleccionada por la Organización Deportiva Panamericana PASO, en su asamblea general del 2 de junio de 2006 en Buenos Aires. Ella y sus ciudades vecinas de Ciudad Guzmán, Puerto Vallarta, Lagos de Moreno y Tapalpa, acogieron a las delegaciones que llegaron para conquistar las preciosas medallas.

Historia de los Juegos Los primeros Juegos Panamericanos se celebraron en Buenos Aires, Argentina en 1951 pero tuvieron su origen más de dos décadas antes. Durante el congreso Olímpico que coincidió con la celebración de los juegos Olímpicos de 1924 en París, Francia, allí los miembros del Comité Olímpico Internacional de Cuba, Guatemala y México propusieron que se establecieran juegos regionales en los que participarían los países de Centroamérica. Estos juegos se hicieron realidad dos años después cuando la Ciudad de México fue anfitriona de los primeros Juegos Centroamericanos.

Durante los Juegos Olímpicos de 1932 que se celebraron en Los Ángeles, algunos de los representantes de las delegaciones de Latinoamérica propusieron que se celebrara juegos regionales para todas las Américas. Esta propuesta finalmente logro que se reuniera en Buenos Aires, por primera vez, el Congreso Deportivo Panamericano en agosto de 1940. El Congreso eligió a Buenos Aires como la sede de los primeros Juegos Panamericanos en 1942 pero la segunda Guerra mundial obligo la postergación de dichos juegos. A pesar de que los Juegos Panamericanos de 1942 nunca se llevaron a cabo al menos un poster fue creado para esa ocasión. Los países de la Mancomunidad Británica (Commonwealth) no participaron en el Congreso Deportivo Panamericanos durante los primeros años. Un segundo Congreso Deportivo Panamericano se reunió en Londres durante los Juegos Olímpicos de 1948 y allí resurgieron los planes. Los primeros Juegos Panamericanos se inauguraron en Buenos Aires el 25 de febrero de 1951. Participaron más de 2.500 atletas provenientes de 22 países. La organización que gobierna los juegos es la Organización Deportiva Panamericana ODEPA [Pan American Sports Organization (PASO)]. En la actualidad la organización se integra por 42 naciones de América del norte, América central, Sudamérica y el Caribe. Las lenguas oficiales son el español y el inglés.

Una veintena de países caribeños han participado en los Juegos Panamericanos de Guadalajara, con diferentes grados de éxito. Marcel Kittel winner The 10th edition of the Amstel Curacao Race was won by Marcel Kittel. Due to heavy rains the race had to be postponed several hours, but finally started at 14:00 hrs. With approximately 250 participants at the start the German has proven to be better in the finals than Andy Schleck en Johnny Hoogerland.

Cross the Atlantic to St Lucia with the ARC This annual transatlantic rally starting each November in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, has now become the most popular way to cross the Atlantic. The largest transocean sailing event in the world, every year the ARC brings together over 200 yachts from all over the world. The Caribbean destination is Rodney Bay in Saint Lucia, one of the most beautiful islands in the Lesser Antilles. The 2700 nautical mile passage on the NE tradewind route takes on average between 14 and 21 days.

Conceived as a friendly race for cruising yachts to make the Atlantic crossing both safer and more enjoyable, participating yachts must carry a range of safety equipment including a liferaft, EPIRB and VHF radio. Daily radio nets contribute further to the safety of participants. The presence of experienced sailors is another incentive for those with little offshore experience. The ARC has a special flavour, which successfully combines racers with cruisers, old with young, and provides entertainment for all. A wide ranging programme of entertainment takes place both before the start and after the finish. The ARC enjoys the support of the Tourist Authority of Gran Canaria, the Port Authority of Las Palmas, Rol Nautic and the Saint Lucia Board of Tourism. C’est en effet le 10ème anniversaire de cette course à succès pour laquelle les organisateurs années après années mettent tout en oeuvre pour attirer les star du vélo et surtout leur donner envie de revenir. Pour cela, une recette simple a priori, bonne organisation, bon accueil, ambiance détendue, parfum de vacances. «Curaçao c’est notre deuxième maison. Nous sommes toujours bien accueillis par l’organisation mais aussi par la population locale» déclarait Franck Schleck, après sa victoire en 2010. Cette année encore les frères Schleck seront au rendezvous accompagnés par Mark Cavendish le Champion du Monde sur route 2011, histoire de boucler la saison sous le soleil, avec les dauphins et les copains.

Fastest Crossing Whilst fundamentally a fun rally for cruising yachts, the ARC does have a more serious racing division, run under the auspices of the Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC). Yachts in the racing divisions are not permitted to use their engines for propulsion (unlike the cruisers), although use of autopilots is allowed. Over the years, the time for the fastest yacht to make the passage entirely by sail as fallen steadi steadily, with the current course record being set in ARC 2006. Record‐breaking catamaran fleet adds to rally excitement The Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (ARC) 2011 edition promises to be another record‐breaker, with 222 boats taking part in the 26th edition, which starts on 20 November in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. In the fleet will be 31multihulls, the largest‐ever ARC multihull fleet, making the ARC the world’s largest transocean catamaranevent.

205 boats are now in Las Palmas, and crews are enjoying the first week of ARC activities, that started on 7 November. Ever‐popular ARC social activities such as parties, official receptions, crew suppers and seminars have been well attended, with more planned for week two before the start on 20 November. The pre‐start activities are devised to help crews relax and enjoy the final preparations before they set sail for Rodney Bay Saint Lucia, over 2,700 nautical miles away.

During the first week, 41 ARC participants planted 200 new trees in the ARC Forest in the mountains above Las Palmas. This is the second year of plantings in the ARC Forest, which is managed by local environmental charity Foresta as part of a wider scheme to establish ‘green streets’ linking areas of native woodland. Eventually the forest will form an important habitat for flora and fauna, with the trees reaching 15m in the next 10 years.

Lisa Skriloff, a veteran multicultural marketing expert, and CBS News Associate Producer Ivette Davila-Richards of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ), made the call in New York while preparing to address the 20th edition of the Caribbean Media Exchange slated for December 1 to 5, 2011 in St. Thomas, United States Virgin Islands (USVI). The multicultural population, which includes African Americans, Caribbean-Americans, Hispanic Americans, Asian Americans, American Indians and Alaskan natives among other groups, currently represents a staggering 36 percent of the US population, and US $2.6 trillion in annual buying power.
