Come Out Children’s Festival 2015 Creative Producer
The importance of the early years in determining life-long health and wellbeing is now beyond doubt. I am delighted to say that the Come Out Children’s Festival will reach children from ages 0 – 14 years. Watching a child’s eyes light up as they experience our Come Out Children’s Festival reveals the magic of the arts. Artistic expression brings great joy to our children. It fosters creativity. Creativity helps a child to cope with change and makes for more resilient children. Creativity also encourages problem solving. Encouraging a more creative society is essential to South Australia’s future prosperity because creativity will drive scientific, technological and entrepreneurial activity in the future.
More than 2 million South Australian children have participated in the Come Out Children’s Festival since its inception in 1974 and it is an intrinsic part of growing up in South Australia. In 2015, the Adelaide Festival Centre is producing the festival for the first time. We embrace the responsibility that comes with putting on an event that holds such an important place in the hearts and souls of South Australians of every age. We want to grow and nurture the Come Out Children’s Festival to provide the opportunity and the benefit of participating in the arts to as many children in South Australia as we possibly can.
Positive engagement with the arts can have particularly powerful and far-reaching benefits for children. In 2015, the Come Out Children’s Festival will offer up an inspiring array of productions, workshops and curated events to excite, encourage, challenge, stimulate and motivate the children of South Australia. For 2015 I have chosen as the Festival’s theme, Building Bridges: bridges within oneself – mind, heart, body and soul; between friends, family and communities; across generations, locations, and cultural and social demographics; and, connecting a diverse range of curriculum areas. So please join the adventure of the Come Out Children’s Festival!

OPENING EVENT
School children will convene on the Telstra Plaza of Adelaide Oval and will launch the festival in lieu of the usual dignitaries. The Mighty Choir of Small Voices, comprising 1700 school children, will walk to the bridge and sing the iconic Australian song, Eagle Rock, thanks to the Public Schools Music Festival team. Led by Cirkidz, the children will parade across the bridge to the sounds of the Sing For Joy Choirs of older people singing a contemporary medley from the other side of the bridge. Come along and watch a beautiful moment in time when multiple generations engage in a shared experience.

6 Expect mayhem, riotous inventions and catastrophic disasters
Adelaide Festival Centre presents
By Dead Puppet Society
When Argus’s friends are taken away by the rubbish truck he determines to find them, no matter what. What follows is an epic and dangerous quest, and Argus travels across the desert, snow, space and the ocean to find his friends and rescue them. On his adventure he encounters seals, spacepeople, sharks, cars, trains, giants, birds and other creatures, and becomes a hero. Making use of nothing but household objects and four pairs of hands, Dead Puppet Society creates Argus’s fantastical world in a low-tech style that has its roots in puppetry and its heart in old-fashioned storytelling. This quietly touching piece will expand the imaginations of adults and children alike.

A model railway track will be laid out in Adelaide Railway Station. Adults and children alike can take a “career test” on a custom-built iPad application and from their answer, they will be allocated an intricately detailed miniature puppet. As they imagine themselves as that character, they tell their story to the puppeteer who will animate the character in the miniature world. The puppet is filmed and the footage projected live onto screens above, and each participant’s story will be documented in an online newspaper.

The Father of Autism, Dr Leo Kanner, takes the audience on a surreal, topsy-turvy journey from the identification of this mysterious condition through to current thinking. With comic abandon, genuine insight and gut-wrenching reality, the audience travels through history: from the Austrian woods in 1863, to the ‘refrigerator mother’ theory of the 1950s, the ‘screaming 70s’ and the growing understanding of the 90s, finally arriving in the present.
