A Word from the Editor
Now is the Time...This is the Place
A warm welcome to you...our new and returning students
Now is the Time…to stand up and be counted.
Now is the time…to take your place in a place that has shaped generations of artists before you.
Artists who are impacting communities and changing the world.
This is the place where you decide where you want to go and take the steps to get there. This is the place where you make connections.
Where you decide where you want to go. The relationships you make here, nurture here, will take you beyond your
college years. Take in all you can in your classrooms, labs, studios but live in the fullness of what the college experience offers outside of curricula.
Now is the time…And this is the place…I encourage you to make your voice count and send us your suggestions or opinion pieces.
If you happen to be struck by a performance or a piece of art, send us your thoughts/photos so we can share it with our audiences.
We are looking forward to an active year and preparations for the Rex Nettleford Arts Conference is in high gear. Keep attuned to this space for more information.
Have a great year and see you around on campus.

Principal’s Desk Welcome Aboard … Let’s Sail TOGETHER!
A new day and a new year have dawned today, and praise God you are still standing! It must be that your lives have been purposely and divinely navigated to be in this space, in this moment, at this time. It means you still have “miles to go before you sleep”.
Welcome, and welcome back to all students, staff and faculty to the hallowed halls and curve-balled corridors of the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts –the only one of its kind in the English Speaking Caribbean!
To our returning students, your energy and passion infuse life into every crevice of our college. Your absence was conspicuously noted, and we are thrilled to have you back in our midst, ready to inspire and be inspired. Your presence is what transforms this
institution into a bustling hub of artistic exploration and academic excellence. Each one of you contributes a unique brushstroke to the colorful canvas that is our college community. You are an integral part of the tapestry that makes Edna Manley College a place like no other.
Last year is done and irretrievably gone. The irreplaceability of time makes it an exercise in futility to dwell on what was not done, or what you failed to do, or which disciplines you failed to nail, except to make it an instructive canvas on which you will paint an even brighter and better resolve.
To our fresh and fired-up faces, embarking on this creative journey for the first time, we congratulate you on joining this exceptional community, destined to becoming a university
college ‘owned’ and supported by the Caribbean Community. You will definitely be the students who help to realize that vision.
Our campus is more than just a physical space. It is a sanctuary for the imagination to flourish, talents to be nurtured, and relationships to be forged. We encourage you to embrace every opportunity that comes your way. Let your passion guide you as you delve into your chosen discipline; stretch yourselves and your creative imagination.
The Edna Manley College is a veritable institution where talents are nurtured, dreams take flight, and visions come to life. You have now become an integral part of this colorful yet intricate tapestried ship. If for any reason you fail to finish, the ship will have some holes in it. I draw from Zora Neale Hurston’s

Dorrett Campbell - Principal (Assigned) Edna Manley College of Visual and Performing Arts
inspiring yet controversial narrative in Their Eyes Were Watching God: “Ships at a distance have every man’s (and woman’s too Neila) wish on board. For some they come in with the tide. For others they sail forever on the horizon, never out of sight, never landing until the Watcher turns his eyes away in resignation, his dreams mocked to death by Time. That is the life of men…”
While we acknowledge that each person’s life may be navigated differently, in this space, we do not accept that some dreams are realized with time, while others dry up “like a raisin in the sun” or lurk out of reach until the dreamer gives up. We do not stand on the edge of the sea of opportunity and “turn our eyes in resignation”. We ensure that our ships come in; we line up and tek rope and work
charged to continue shaping the next generation of artists and managers. We continue to rely on your expertise to coach our students into becoming their best selves. Thank you for returning and for your unwavering commitment to excellence.
Here’s to a semester filled with limitless creativity, intentional teaching and learning, and meaningful relationships. As we navigate challenges and celebrate victories, let’s remember that our unity makes us stronger.
Let’s get on board the ship and make this leg of the journey one for the ages!
Let’s do it TOGETHER!
A very special welcome back to our Staff; some of who never left. Your efforts are the anchor that holds our vibrant tapestried ship together.

The EMCVPA launched its 45th anniversary initiatives in November 2021 with a year-long list of activities which included a fundraising initiative – 45 for 45 with the objective of raising JM$45,000,000.00 over a period of one year. We approached Sagicor with a request of $23,000,000.00 Jamaican dollars to assist with repairs of the Hope Brooks Studio, which was damaged by fire in September 2021 based on projected costs for repairs.
The College was selected as a beneficiary along with the University Hospital of the West Indies, a first time for Sagicor as usually only one beneficiary is chosen in any given year and the institutions are generally health focused. With the EDNA “fire”, Sagicor raised just over ninety-one million dollars, the most in SIGMA’s history.
EMCVPA was given our request of J$23,000,000.00 to start works on the Hope Brooks Studio!

The Cecil Cooper Foundation Scholarship: Honouring a legacy and shaping lives
Brown, Joshuana Graham, and Daniel McHugh, School of Visual Arts; and Mikhayla Brown from the School of Drama. In expressing gratitude for the bursary, the recipient Mikhayla Brown noted that she has always been involved in various aspects of the arts but noted that over time she has come to lean towards theatre and acting. She will be pursuing an associate degree in Theatre Arts majoring in acting. The Cecil Cooper Foundation scholarships and bursaries are supported by CHASE Fund, VMBS, Sanmerna, and patron of the foundation Mrs. Juliet Holness, MP.
The Cecil Cooper Foundation was launched on June 17, 2022, to honour the work and legacy of Cecile Cooper with a mission to assist the arts and culture through bursaries and scholarships for students at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts. The 2023 Exhibition Titled ‘The Dream’, the exhibition opened June 17, which coincided with Cecile Cooper’s birthday, a tradition established last year. His widow, Attorney at Law and Head of the Foundation Mrs. Rose Bennett Cooper announced that Cecil’s birthday celebration would continue to support
the young artists studying at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts. By realising Cecil’s dream of showcasing his works alongside his students, the exhibition not only pays homage to his own artistic vision but also provides an opportunity for aspiring artists to pursue their own dreams of greatness. The Collegiate congratulates the 2023 recipients; five firstyear students who will join third-year, School of Visual Arts student Shemar Bernard as the recipients of bursaries. The new students are Marissa Thompson who will pursue studies at the School of Dance; Israel
