The Culture, Innovation & Excellence of Venice The Great Concert with Lorin Maazel at La Fenice Theater

La Fenice Theater The La Fenice Theater, a glorious theater founded in 1792, is still one of the main Italian and European theaters. It is first of all a repertory theater, which finds its roots in the great heritage of Italian 19th century opera: for La Fenice, Rossini wrote Tancredi and Semiramide, Bellini I Capuleti e I Montecchi, Verdi wrote five operas, among which La Traviata and Rigoletto. During the 20th century, La Fenice was an international reference point, with world premieres of works such as Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress, and Britten’s The Turn of the Screw, Prokofiev’s The Fiery Angel and Nono’s Intolerance, and attention to contemporary creativity continues to be one of the highlights of its programme, as recent premieres of works by Kagel, Guarnieri, Mosca and Ambrosini have shown. The summer festival “Lo spirito della musica di Venezia” - the spirit of Venetian music

Follow La Fenice Theater on

- will be one of the strong points of the summer schedule and will touch, aside from the La Fenice Theater, also the Malibran Theatre and the Palazzo Ducale, along with many churches and historical palaces in the city, where operas, ballets and concerts will take place. The annual concert season of the La Fenice Theater Orchestra is also particularly rich, featuring renowned maestros among which the young main conductor Diego Matheuz, and will include, during the course of 2013, an extraordinary prestigious symphonic concert during the fall, to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the reopening of the La Fenice Theater after the 1996 fire which completely destroyed the theater. Great expectations also surround the inauguration of the 2013-2014 season in November with Meyerbeer’s L’africaine, on the 150th anniversary of the composer’s death.

The Serenissima around the world An interview with mayor Giorgio Orsoni who tells us about the Venetian “system between Culture, Beauty and Technology.

Mr. Mayor, the aim of this mission of the city of Venice in New York seems to be that of presenting a unified and organized system, but how can a complex industrial reality and a city of culture and beauty coexist?

It’s exactly that twist that represents the charm of Venice. Venice is a unique city: the industrial part of Porto Marghera, the various manufacturing districts of the land area, the port, the Mose, which, incidentally, is the largest public work in the world. But Venice is also the home of charming grand buildings along the Canal Grande, bridges, music and art, which permeates every narrow Venetian alley. Both aspects make of Venice a unified system which is not only organized but also able to rise to the challenges of modernity and carry the burdens of a glorious past.

What called for a mission in New York?

First of all, because of the interest shown by the State and the City of New York. As for any city that lives on water, in fact, New York must also try to resolve the issues generated by a giant such as the Hudson river. The focal point of this visit is the “tale” of that extraordinary environmental engineering creation represented by the Mose. Therefore, if it’s true that the Mose is a great engineering feat, it is also true that it is our duty to sustain our fundamental industrial system, which is able to compete effectively on the market. We cannot, however, forget that in a few weeks, we will celebrate the anniversary of one of the greatest European theaters, the La Fenice Theater, and its reconstruction, to which a large part of the world has contributed, and, if we needed to rate the main benefactors, we could certainly not forget the many New-Yorkers who supported us with great enthusiasm. Alongside these themes of fundamental importance for the interaction with the most important city of the United States, the entire Venetian cultural system - Civic Museums, The Biennale, State Museums, the connective tissue made of the enogastronomic culture, the culture of hospitality – constitutes the essential foundation on which the international success of Venice rests.

Great cities, as mentioned above, requiring solutions to great issues…. Of course, presiding over Venice means managing the most complex city in the world. Proof of that is the extremely vital debate that has begun: the balance between sustainable tourism and great ships with the city. No one possesses miraculous solutions. We all know that tourism is one of the riches of Venice,

and as such, we do not want nor can we do without it. But I do guarantee that Venice will not suffocate because of the slightly chaotic stream of visitors form all over the world. We will also surely find a solution that will not sacrifice one of the greatest Italian ports, while at the same time we will be able to guarantee Venetians an the world the safeguard of this splendid and lively jewel of a city for future generations.

Venezia

a winning system

Matteo Zoppas, President of the confederation of Italian industries, talks about the Venetian Excellence

For Europe, Venice is the portal to the Mediterranean. Since the days of the Serenissima, it has been the capital of both culture and commerce and craftsmanship, a city so important that it became one of the favoured stages for Shakespeare’s plays. This fascinating heritage attracts yearly more than 600 thousand American citizens, who come to visit the Venetian cities of art, amongst which Venice is undoubtedly the most sought after. Venice is not only a city to photograph, but is also a territory that prides itself for production of the highest level such as artistic glass, exquisite fabrics, luxurious shoes and shipbuilding. An area with great potential to express and in which to invest.

The Venice Confederation of Italian industries, on occasion of the next international Expo, has chosen to focus on key “Made in Venice” sectors like design, agriculture and luxury hospitality, so as to feature the potential of the Venetian industrial excellence, which, every year, exports products valued at aroung 4 billion euros, of which more than 230 million euros are destined to the American market.

Mose. Recent milestones and next steps How Mose works

Mose is the last and most important element in a far-ranging plan of measures to protect the lagoon area implemented by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport - Venice Water Authority through the Consorzio Venezia Nuova, in accordance with the Special Law for Venice. The heart of Mose consists of a series of mobile barriers made up of gates located in the Lido, Malamocco and Chioggia inlets. When inactive, the gates are full of water and completely invisible, resting in housing structures in the seabed. When there is a risk of particularly high tides, compressed air is emitted into the gates, emptying them of water. As the water is expelled, the gates rotate around the axis of the hinges and rise up until they emerge and block the tidal flow entering the lagoon. When the tide drops and the sea and lagoon return to the same level, the gates are filled with water again and return to the housing structures.

Mose - work progress, costs and jobs

• Construction of Mose was authorised by the “Comitatone” (Committee for Policy, Coordination and Control) in April 2003 and work began in May the same year; • About 80% of the work has been completed. In 2012, installation of the barriers themselves began, starting from the North Lido barrier. The first four gates have already been installed in the Lido Treporti inlet. On the 12th of October 2013 the four Mose gates in the Lido inlet were operated for the first time; • The barriers are expected to be completed and in operation by 2016/2017.
