" When I arrived at the shipyard ," Runyan said , " the side I saw was painted white, ready for the mural. We went on board , and they were almost finished painting her other side. It stopped me, Baby. I wasn 't ready for the scale of this thing. It blew my mind. " The concept and final art for the exterior of the S. S. Independence had been executed on a 40-inch model. Even the most sophisticated designer has to be forgiven some difficulty in visualizing a mural surface 683 feet long. A transit was required to project the art onto the various surfaces of the ship, including the lifeboats and the stacks. While this was happening, Runyan told me, he was still sweating the " eyes" . During the planning for the initial presentation , I had seen a sketch that carried all of Harlow's features, but that was discarded in favor of simplicity and the decision was between " just eyes" or " no eyes. " " After I saw it painted, " Runyan stated, " there was no doubt. I know we made the right decision. " That early sketch also had curlycues making up the sun 's rays. As this moved into final planning stages, it was changed to straight bars of color with conformation to the ship's contours and planes. Somebody would have gone crazy trying to project those curving forms onto the actual ship. The mural, the firs~ impression of the refurbished Independence, apparently blew a lot of people's minds. Most of the press reports have conveyed a misleading impression of the ship. Newsweek, for example, titled their article " The S. S. Psychedelic " , which the ship definitely is not.. It is a " fun ship", thoughtfull y designed to appeal to a broad range of passengers, with flexibility, comfort, " loud" rooms and " soft" rooms.

H I~ -

In contrast to traditional ship interiors, color has been liberally used, but with logic. Staterooms are small and compact and sometimes convey an institutional feeling . To make them warmer, Robert Miles Runyan & Associates used color. There are four basic carpet styles and eight different colorcoordinated upholstery and furnishing schemes. Pattern and Print Studios, New York, was commissioned to develop special fabrics in overscale floral patterns and large checks. Bright colored velvets are also used in the more expensive rooms. Color serves function. Finding your way around a ship can be a problem. To help solve this, each stairwell is painted in a different, very individual color. One of the principal " soft" rooms is the Independence Lounge, formerly the first-class

Above , two of the stairwells with " advertising " murals. Left, exterior detail. Decorative posters used throughout the ship . Napkins and matches from the series of items in general use on ship other than in rooms with own motif. Menu for Cinco de Mayo coffee shop. Swimming pool with " splash ". Porthole murals and knot patterns in The Seven Seas. Detail of one of the overscale floral patterns used on stateroom bedspreads. Mural in The Gallery.
