They all come together in a milling, arguing throng- each demanding responsibility for the final design. Predictably, the result is an unsatisfying compromise. No one's idea of a really good package is ever produced. To give you some idea of what you've been missing, here are sixteen uncompromised corn packages designed by some of the thousands of hitherto frustrated experts in this field.

NE HAS to hav~ been around, and conscious, for at least 25 years to realize that the Bettmann Archive has not been here forever. With venerable-appearing Dr. Otto Bettmann on one hand and his million items* on the other, all in the style of yester-year, one easily assumes that it all began a very long time ago. Actually, it began in 1935 when Dr. Bettmann brought the nucleus of the archive to the United States from Europe. To celebrate its 25th anniversary (1963-1935 = 25) Dr. Bettmann decided on a Panopticon, a name he invented to explain a show of some playful uses of his art files by New York artists and designers. This Show, the Panopticon, opened in New York with a suitably irreverent party, from which some scenes are shown here; and then stayed open a month, for the general public. Over 1000 people attended, and Dr. Bettmann scheduled a repeat performance at the School of Visual Arts, March 16-27. That showing will not be The End for at least two of the pieces. Emil Dispenza's A Civil War Boy has been purchased by art critic Aline Saarinen for her personal collection. David Epstein's three dimensional hippopotamus will become part of a window display at BonwitTeller - pretty good for a box that stood in the way around Epstein's studio. The easiest way for him to resolve that problem was to build it into his Panopticon contribution and send it to Dr. Bettmann. No restrictions were imposed on the designers. Any 'subject or combination found in the archives was acceptable. The Civil War, Sex and Aviation turned out to be popular -not in that order. Promotional materials and programs for the Panopticon were designed by Peter Max of the Daly & Max Studio. *Aardvark to Zodiac.
