The T ravelers is an important carrier of casualty- property insurance for individua ls, with approx imately three mi Il ion policies in force. About three-quarters of premium income is from automobile coverages. The remainder is mostly from homeowners in urance but a l o include coverage of other persona l property such a plea ure boats and camp trai lers. Premiums increased in 1975 by 5 percent, entirely as a result of the higher rates necessitated by in ten ified inflation in claims co l . Because we were one of the first to recognize the need to rai e prices, our competitive po ition was temporaril y affected, thu reducin g the flow of renewa l policies as well as new sa le . Insurer of personal automobile experienced an ex traordinaril y difficult time in 1975 , incurring substantia l underwriting losses. In our own case, underwriting results deteriorated ignifica nt ly from those of 1974, due mainl y to higher lo co ts for current claims plus additions to reserves for claims outstanding from earlier periods. The root of the problem wa severe inflation in the particular segments of the economy that affect personal lines insurers. While the broad Consumer Price Index rose by 8 percent in 1975 , med ical costs ( which impact auto bodily inju ry claims) were up by 10 percent and automobile crash parts, uch a fenders and windshields were up an average of 25 percent Furthermore, our
