HELLO AND WELCOME TO YOUR COMMERCIAL DISTRICT BID PUBLICATION

Hello and welcome to your Commercial District BID Publication, For those who aren’t familiar with what the Business Improvement District (BID) is, allow me to explain who we are and what we are here to do. Commercial District BID is an independent body which works on behalf of its 750+ members, helping develop and maintain the area to increase its connectivity and value, whilst promoting the fantastic businesses and individuals that make us so unique. Recently, we’ve spent time meeting with the various businesses around the area, finding out how we can continually work together to create a better, improved BID for the benefit of us all. Thank you to the 100+ businesses that got involved – we appreciate the time and energy you shared. I’m very proud and excited to reveal some of what we’ve been working on since we consulted with you earlier this year. We are proud to unveil our revised brand identity – all of which is centred around you – the people who make the Commercial BID what it is. As you walk around the area, you will be no doubt see many familiar (and some not so familiar) faces of the people who help make the area what it is. You told us that you wanted your BID to help promote you and your organisations - our new signage is just one of the ways we’ll be doing this - in a spectacular fashion. You also told us that you want us to communicate with you, helping promote the brilliant work you are doing. With this, I welcome you to the first edition of THIS magazine. THIS is a quarterly publication dedicated to this area and businesses that reside here. THIS magazine will feature news and updates, profiles of our members, as well as reminding you of the raft of leisure and night-time offerings we have here to enjoy. And there is so much more on the way from us as we head towards the festive season and into 2014 - all of which we will keep you updated on as we progress. A healthy dose of news, people and events in and around the Commercial District BID... CITY CENTRE IS A FLAG-BEARER

Liverpool’s city centre is being recognised as an example of best practice for its night-time experience. Not only has the city centre retained its prestigious Purple Flag accreditation, a national award which recognises safe, clean and wellmanaged city centres at night, but the award judges want Liverpool to show other areas how it is done. Three cheers! Assessors from the association of Town Centre Managers have said: “Civic pride is very evident, and the delivery by Liverpool’s Purple Flag partnership is especially impressive in the face of substantial public sector funding cuts. The Panel is keen for you to share your expertise as an example to other cities facing similar issues. Liverpool is a vibrant city with much to do. At all times the assessors felt safe and welcomed. There was a good mix of early, mid and late night entertainment and something for the entire family.” Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson, said: “The assessors visited the city on Light Night, which also celebrated the opening of the new Central Library. This may have been an exceptional night even for Liverpool but it also demonstrated how much we have to offer and how well managed the city centre is when we have even more people than usual visiting it. The fact that they want us to give advice to other cities speaks volumes. It is acknowledgement from independent observers that Liverpool city centre is safe, welcoming and well-run with a huge amount for any visitor to do.”

DAN MILLAR What do you do in the BID? I’m on work experience at Brabners Law Firm. Where’s your favourite spot in the BID? I like to go to Philpotts for lunch for fresh sandwiches. What do you like most about the BID? Commercial District BID feels different to any other part of the city. There’s always something going on and the views are fantastic.

Tell us a bit about what your business does. Liverpool Vision is the Mayor of Liverpool’s economic development company, enabling the city to complete and accelerate the economic recovery and growth it’s witnessed over the last decade. We’re focused on building a strong, sustainable economy which can compete more effectively in international markets than ever before. We work with Liverpool-based businesses and those wanting to move and invest in the city to support the creation of local job opportunities. Why did you decide to locate your organisation in the Commercial District? Liverpool Vision was located in the Observatory, Old Haymarket. At the time of the merger with Business Liverpool and Liverpool Land Development Company, when it became the city’s economic development company, it made sense to be situated in the heart of the business community. What are the aims for your organisation for the next 12 months? Liverpool Vision’s Business Growth Team is the team which has the most interaction with individual businesses across the city and we’re able to offer a wide range of funded business support to growing businesses. During the next 12 months, our aim is to assist as many businesses as possible. Ultimately, the hope is that by receiving this funded support, Liverpool-based businesses will be in a stronger position to create more jobs quicker. What do you want to see more of from your BID? It may be useful to help coordinate the push on improving broadband access across the BID. As an organisation, I think the BID does a great job and I try to ensure as many businesses know about the BID as possible! QUICK FIRE QUESTIONS Favourite Restaurant in the BID? POLLY EDLER What do you do in the BID: I’m on work experience at LFC. Where’s your favourite spot in the BID: There’s a few great shops in and around the area, which are quite cool for something different. What do you like most about the BID: It’s always so busy here and there’s a nice atmosphere. CALLING ALL RESPONSIBLE BUSINESSES

Business in the Community (BITC) is looking for responsible businesses to get involved with their Ready for Work programme. Working with a network of 160 companies across the UK, the programme provides training, placements, volunteering and mentoring opportunities for people who do not necessarily have access to them. Businesses that are currently on the programme have benefitted from increased staff development opportunities, greater community links and a stronger corporate image both locally and nationally. One of the key goals of BITC is to ensure everyone receives support from businesses to build skills, confidence and employability potential. We bought a number of properties here some years ago and see the Commercial District as the heart of Liverpool’s business community. What are the advantages of being part of a BID? We aim to continue to improve and differentiate our buildings, whilst still providing the highest possible standards of customer service. We also aim to provide generous incentives to help businesses expand, including paying moving costs, offering industry advice and giving rent free periods. What do you want to see more of from your BID? We’d like the BID to work in partnership with us to improve the public realm around our buildings. First impressions are important; and what people see when they arrive at Moorfields or park their car is imperative. QUICK FIRE QUESTIONS Favourite Restaurant in the BID? Moose. If you could visit one Commercial District BID organisation for the day, which one would it be? The one with the best coffee… Best kept secret in the BID? It’s got to be Salad Bowl at The Plaza – although it’s becoming increasingly less so! Best thing about Liverpool? The Waterfront. The best day of the week is when I do my 7:00am run from The Plaza to Otterspool Prom and back. It really does feel like the best city on Earth!

San Carlo is a great place for a glamorous atmosphere and great food and drink – and the celebrity spotting is always fun, too! What do you like most about the BID? It’s good to stop and look at some of the buildings around here as they’re so big and majestic – it’s nice to see such old fashioned buildings in a modern area. Tell us a bit about what your business. Since 1992, we’ve been supplying the business community with a high quality optical service; including eye examinations, designer eyewear, contact lenses and sunglasses.

EXCHANGE STATION REDEVELOPMENT IS RIGHT ON TRACK

Why did you decide to locate your organisation in the Commercial District?

Developer, Space Northwest has announced that coffee specialist Bean will be the operator of the new destination coffee shop at its flagship development ‘Exchange Station’ on Tithebarn Street in Liverpool.

I’d worked for a company called Miller and Santhouse Opticians from 1985-1992 in Lord Street and had built up a working knowledge of the business community. From this, I saw a niche opportunity to be the only optician serving the business community and took it!

Bean will provide an extra boost for tenants and visitors to Exchange Station, offering a range of ethically-sourced coffees and blends to suit all tastes. There will also be a range of sandwiches and salads throughout the day - even a glass of wine for more relaxed meetings.

What are the advantages of being part of a BID?

In keeping with Exchange Station’s connectivity focus, the Bean coffee shop will be fully Wi-Fi enabled, so that visitors can multi task during their breakfast and lunch breaks within a unique, contemporary social space.

I believe that the BID will help to ensure the environment is kept to a high standard, will help to promote the businesses in the area and, most importantly, encourage new businesses to move in. What are your biggest challenges over the next 12 months? The biggest challenge will be the economy. Thankfully, we’ve seen some green shoots and good signs and have continued to grow, in spite of the downturn. What do you want to see more of from your BID? More consultation with businesses about what they would like the BID to be doing. Attention should be given to promote the BID within the business community and to all its workers. QUICK FIRE QUESTIONS Favourite Restaurant in the BID? San Carlo. If you could visit one place in the BID, which one would it be? The Passport Office. Not too sure why – just interested! Best kept secret in the BID? The underground war rooms in Horton House. They were used in WWII for the Battle of the Atlantic. Best thing about Liverpool? Scousers!

Wayne Locke, director at Space Northwest, said: “Bean at Exchange Station will provide a new focal point for businesses within the building. Having an open plan space for people to host informal meetings has been a priority for the new Exchange Station and you can’t do that without having a coffee shop!” The coffee shop opens later this month when the £5 million first phase redevelopment of Exchange Station completes. Finishing touches are currently being made to the scheme which will revive the building’s heritage as a main hub of connectivity for commerce across the region. The first fully refurbished office suites were completed in March 2013 and the additional suites, the coffee shop, meeting room facilities and the main concourse are nearing completion. The building will officially re-launch at a glittering event in October 2013 – one to watch out for!

Tell us a bit about what your business does. The infamous Shiverpool tours have been around for ten years – but as well as doing the tours, we also do a lot of be-’spook’ events that don’t always involve the macabre. The beating heart behind what we do is our ability to capture the imagination and involve audiences in an interactive and exciting experience. Shiverpool is primarily a theatre company; we enjoy working in the community with schools, universities and organisations, as well as the general public. What are the advantages of being part of a BID? There is a renewed focus in the area – and we hope that, over time, the impact of the BID will continue through the many exciting developments happening in the area. We particularly want to see the BID continue to raise property values, increase footfall and keep crime down. What are your biggest challenges over the next 12 months? I think it will be the recruitment of new guides for our new and expanding tours; including a tour on wheels, which is soon to be announced! This, and also recruiting people with the right minerals; oh and the ever increasing lack of available storage – for the bodies of course! What do you want to see more of from your BID? We’d love to see more events! Things like farmers’ markets, music and charity events would increase footfall and also give something back to the community. If the opportunity for Shiverpool to do street theatre arose, we’d love to help out. The area is full of history and stories that deserve to be told. QUICK FIRE QUESTIONS Favourite Restaurant in the BID? Shiverpool works proactively with Restaurant Bar and Grill, Marco Pierre White’s Steak House and Olive Restaurant – so definitely one of those! If you could visit one place in the BID, which one would it be? Without a shadow of a doubt, it has to be the old Royal Sun Alliance Building, with the golden dome.

What do you do in the BID? I’m a Civil Servant. Where’s your favourite spot in the BID? I’m quite the fan of real ale, so the old fashioned pubs are always a great spot to visit. What do you like most about the BID? This area has everything you want; there’s plenty of cafés, shops and all the facilities you could need. It’s also cleaned up a lot too and is maintained really well.

ALL ABOARD THE CRUISE PASSENGER CONNECTOR BUS

The Albert Dock has partnered with Liverpool ONE, City Central BID, Liverpool Cathedral and The Commercial District BID to provide a direct bus link into the city centre for visiting cruise passengers. The Cruise Connector Bus provides tourists with a free and easy bus service which allows them to experience the best of the Liverpool Waterfront, as well as central retail and entertainment locations. The shuttle service has been developed by the partners to take full advantage of the number of day visitors arriving at the Liverpool Cruise Terminal. The aim of the Cruise Connector Bus is to increase the partners’ share of the Liverpool visitor economy - estimated to be over £3bn per year. Ged Gibbons, Chief Operating Officer of City Central and Commercial BID, said: ‘’Cruise passengers are a vital part of our tourist economy and a free bus service is a great way to showcase what the city centre has to offer. This bus is also a great example of how our city centre partners work together to further improve Liverpool’s reputation as a quality visitor destination.’’

What do you do in the BID?I’m a Customer Service Leader at More Th>n. Where’s your favourite spot in the BID? It’s definitely got to be Cinnamon Café in The Capital and City Exchange Building. They do great coffee and are so central to the Commercial District BID area. What do you like most about the BID? There’s such energy in the area and it gives you a buzz when you’re walking throughout its streets. FREE SUPPORT FROM HEALTH@WORK

Health@Work, based on Edmund Street, is offering organisations in the Commercial District BID free business support, including training and staff awareness sessions via the Workplace Wellbeing Charter - a nationally accredited scheme. The Workplace Wellbeing Charter provides organisations with the ability to demonstrate their commitment to the health and safety and well-being of their employees. The scheme is simple, clear and easy to follow, working with you to make the workplace a more productive, happy and health conscious place. At the end of the scheme, each successful business will be presented with an award that is accredited by the NHS. This recognised certification shows commitment, compliance and, most importantly, helps create a healthier workforce. This is an excellent opportunity and one that BID would certainly recommend! It’s a great little spot for amazing sushi and there’s always such a friendly and relaxed atmosphere in there. What do you like most about the BID? You feel so safe walking through here and the architecture is so beautiful.

What do you do in the BID?I’m Head of HR at Liverpool Vision. Where’s your favourite spot in the BID? I really like the new City Wine Bar. It’s in the perfect location (just off Old Hall Street) and has a really rustic feel – it’s a great addition to the area. What do you like most about the BID? I love the buzz around here – everyone has somewhere to be and someone to see. I’ve worked in the area for a long time now and have watched the area transform; it’s now buzzing with some great restaurants and amazing cafés.

MERSEYSIDE YOUNG PROFESSIONALS CHARITY BALL RETURNS FOR 2013

What do you do in the BID? I’m Head of Marketing & Communications at Downtown Liverpool in Business. Where’s your favourite spot in the BID? It’s got to be Restaurant Bar and Grill on Brunswick Street. It’s such a gorgeous place to go for a drink or something to eat after work.

The annual Merseyside Young Professionals Charity Ball is back. One of the highlights of the Young Professionals calendar, the Ball is taking place at the Crowne Plaza on Friday 11th October, 2013. This year’s chosen charity is Alder Hey’s Children’s Charity and the event will once again be sponsored by Investec Wealth & Investment. This year’s black tie ball promises to be a night a night of fun and frivolity, as anyone who has been before will know. It’s a chance to let your hair down, rub shoulders with colleagues old and new, whilst supporting a very worthy cause. Last year’s Charity Ball was a great success, raising over £6000 for Fairbridge Prince’s Trust.

What do you like most about the BID? I love the fact that you can network on your lunch run! There’s always someone you know walking past, it’s like a neighbourhood where you’re bound to bump into a familiar face.

What do you do in the BID? I’m Head of Business Planning at Liverpool Vision. Where’s your favourite spot in the BID? For lunch, it’s got to be a quick visit to Greggs! What do you like most about the BID? Over the last 18 months, you can really see the difference in not only the aesthetics of the area, but also the new developments. It’s noticeably busier around here and local bars and restaurants

Money raised on the night will go a long way in helping Alder Hey’s Children’s Charity continue to do the great work it does for the children of Merseyside. Along with a sumptuous three course meal, guests will also be entertained by a live band, as well as an auction with some truly outstanding money-can’tbuy prizes.

I really like the Exchange Bar for a drink after work – there’s always a lot of familiar faces and a great atmosphere. What do you like most about the BID? I love it here; everyone’s got time for you and everyone is so friendly. Everyone’s up for a laugh as well, which is great.

LORD MAYOR, GARY MILLAR SPEAKS TO BID

I’m also trying to create a safe haven for lesbians, gay and transgender youths by supporting the Michael Causer Foundation. I’m also fundraising for special educational resources for disabled children with Variety Club. People ask me why I’ve chosen these charities and it’s because they’re the charities that are close to my heart – and those I’ve worked with extensively in the past.” That’s four charities, as varied and important as the last – and a big responsibility for anyone, let alone the Lord Mayor. But with so many civic appointments, where does the Lord Mayor find the time? “By collaborating, mainly. We all have an incredible responsibility to help those around us, who really need it. It’s not about me; it’s about the thousands of people who are really in need across the city. The great thing is that the work we are all doing is going to help people right here in this city, right here in Liverpool. For example, having spoken to Lyn Staunton about the work we’re doing with the Variety Club, she’s promised that every penny we raise will go directly to helping disabled children in Liverpool. It’s this kind of thing that means the most, helping the people in your own city and making a real difference. It’s also the help from the businesses in the city, as well and about being a bit cheeky and actually asking people to make the difference. I recently launched the 1,000 club; where we’re asking 1,000 organisations across the city to donate £1,000. And that’s something we’ve been incredibly successful with – in the space of 12 weeks; we’ve already had pledges £101,000. It’s amazing.” Quite an impressive start for Liverpool’s Lord Mayor, but is it the city itself that’s making the difference? Gary seems to think so. “Here’s me, speaking with a strong Scottish accent! I’m an adopted Scouser; I recognise this and it’s very humbling but also a very honoured position. I truly do and genuinely believe that we are the best city in the world for a number of different reasons. Everybody here wants to make a difference – no matter how small; we all want to help. I call them baby steps towards paying it forward (one of the Lord Mayor’s favourite films). If we all make those baby steps towards making a difference, the end result is going to be something incredibly powerful.” Gary’s big passion is history; and when we quizzed him about what he loves most about the topic, he was quick to answer: “History is all around us, particularly in this Commercial District area! If I could advise you, I would say always walk around – walk around Castle Street, walk around Exchange Flags - there’s history everywhere. And not only walk around but look up, too! It’s important to look up at our magnificent city and the beautiful scenery and buildings – even the people! I often think it’d be great to create some kind of reality TV show about this area – a day in the life of BID! You have no idea what’s going on in those buildings, but what does go on is making our city great.

Lord Mayor, Gary Millar takes some time out with Commercial District BID to talk about his charity work, how Liverpool is the best city in the world and how a Commercial District reality show would go down a storm.

It’s what pays the taxis drivers, fills the restaurants, what creates jobs and what brings the money into our city and it’s fantastic. It keeps the cogs and wheels turning but at the end of the day, it’s the people right here that makes this area what it is – the best.”

We’re with Lord Mayor Gary Millar in the plush, historic surroundings of Liverpool Town Hall on a sunny afternoon to find out how he’s getting on with his role as Lord Mayor. Apart from being wholly welcoming, down to earth and knowledgeable, we learn about his fantastic charity work and just how he plans to raise £1 million for his chosen causes this year.

COMMERCIAL DISTRICT BID WELCOMES JIM GILL

Bill Addy, Chief Executive of Liverpool BID Company said: “We are delighted to welcome Jim on board. His appointment will bring further leadership and direction to Commercial District BID. Jim is a fantastic candidate whose distinguished career meant he was the perfect person for the role.” Born and brought up in the North West of England, Jim was then educated at the London School of Economics and the University of Sussex. Jim has had a long career; first as an economist and then a senior administrator in the Department of Trade and Industry, before becoming Director of AMEC Developments. In 1994 Jim moved to English Partnerships where, as Regional Director, he built up the Agency’s Programme in the North West. In subsequent years, Jim became Commercial Director, where he helped to transform the performance of Priority Sites; a joint venture with the Royal Bank of Scotland. Following the success of Priority Sites, he went on to set up other commercial joint ventures; Network Space and English Cities Fund. In July 2001, Jim became Chief Executive of Liverpool Vision, the Urban Regeneration Company responsible for overseeing the regeneration of Liverpool City Centre. Bill continues; “Jim’s role at English Partnerships and later at Liverpool Vision pays testament to what he will now do at Commercial District BID. Furthermore, he is a stalwart of this city; his reputation alone will help further some of the great work we are doing at Commercial District BID.” In 2007 Jim was awarded an OBE for Services to Regeneration and in 2008 he was made an Honorary Fellow of Liverpool John Moores University. Jim now sits as the Chairman of Commercial District BID. Liverpool currently has two BIDs – City Central, which covers the retail heart of the city centre and the Commercial District, which, as you know, embodies the business heart of Liverpool. Jim Gill OBE has been appointed as the new Chairman of Commercial District BID. The former Chief Executive of Liverpool Vision joins following three years as a freelance consultant. Jim replaces previous Chairman, David Guest and interim Chairman, Ed Oliver. In January 2011, the London Evening Standard published an article berating the ‘Scouse Embassy’ that was opening in the capital. ‘Let’s put these Scousers firmly in their place,’ read the headline. This was followed by the belief that ‘Londoners will never change their perceptions about this ‘chippy’ Northern city’. A little over two years after this story was published, Liverpool-based businesses that have expanded down south have good reason to challenge this claim. It’s Liverpool in London is a unique organisation, designed with ambitious, growth-hungry Liverpool firms in mind. Created to support, inspire, network and grow Liverpool-born firms, the organisation currently has 35 members, all of whom have enjoyed the benefits a London base can bring. What’s more, these 35 businesses have now accumulated in excess of £3 million worth of new contract wins since being in capital – not bad for a chippy Northern city. The idea for Liverpool in London came from a shared vision between Liverpool City Council and Liverpool Vision. Together they wanted Liverpool to have a base in London to send out a new ‘can do and will do’ message about the city and the talent that resides here. To reinforce this message, the office space and associated materials have been plastered with positive, thought-provoking messages about Liverpool, detailing why Liverpool and its enterprising companies are ready for business. Chris Heyes, Head of It’s Liverpool in London said: “Liverpool is still the only city in London to have its own dedicated presence in the Capital. Operational since January 2011, It’s Liverpool in London has delivered a significant number of investment enquiries, provided a platform for Liverpool businesses to grow, secured substantial PR value for its members as well as facilitating a range of high level business connections. It is not only the work done in London that makes the scheme a stand out project of relevance for the city; it’s also the links we make with key organisations for the benefit of Liverpool city projects. It’s Liverpool in London supports numerous Liverpool projects and acts as a central focal point for Liverpool’s inward investment activity with easy access into Government, UKTI and Foreign Consulates.” The Arena and Convention Centre, Merseytravel and USP Creative were just some of the first businesses to take membership. Following these, the floodgates opened and the scheme has gone from strength to strength. There are a number of businesses within Commercial District BID that have taken membership of the scheme. These include Evoke Solutions and Sutcliffe; THIS Magazine spoke with them to find out how London was treating them thus far. Ian Robinson, Director of Evoke Solutions said: “Being involved with such a positive ‘vehicle’ for both creating business links and investment opportunities between Liverpool and London has given us a real platform to develop our client network. It has also enabled us to continue with our growth strategy without the need for committing major capital upfront”

Ian MacIver, Director at Sutcliffe, has been a member since the beginning of the scheme, he said: “We’ve been members of Liverpool in London since its inception. On a micro level I find the offices at Royal Mint Court very useful as a base for when I visit London. As a marketing tool we find it very useful to have a London address - something that helps us when making introductions to new clients.” Alongside a physical base to work from and a London address to communicate to potential clients, It’s Liverpool in London also hosts monthly business networking events, titled The Business Club. These events typically focus on a current issue and feature high-profile guest speakers with that all important opportunity to network. Ian MacIver goes on to say “I find the scheme very useful; it gives me a focal point for my regular visits. Chris and the team are a great help with making key introductions to other businesses.”

The Commercial District BID, on behalf of its members, has agreed an exclusive package with partners at It’s Liverpool in London, which will be shared via a time-banking proposition across the BID membership. This deal will enable businesses from across the Commercial District to utilise the facilities available to build their brand nationally; helping establish new leads whilst developing relationships with existing national contacts and customers. Businesses can then decide if they would like to take up full membership themselves. Kevin Whittaker, Operations Manager at Commercial District BID said: “As well as the benefits that our members can enjoy by using It’s Liverpool in London’s facilities, this offer also enables the BID team to develop and promote the area to potential investors. ON YOU Liverpotol City Council is due to launch the UK’s largest cycle hire scheme outside of London later this year. The scheme will offer a cheaper, healthier and more environmentally conscious way of traveling around the city area. Plans are in place for 1000 cycles and 60 cycle stations spread across the city region, predominantly in the city centre - available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. As part of the consultation over the plans, a survey was launched by City Central BID and Liverpool Commercial District BID on behalf of Liverpool City Council. The survey, which helped to inform and shape the proposals for the scheme, gave people the chance to express their views on where the stations should be situated, what types of trips they would use the bikes for and how much they think scheme membership should cost.

The results of the survey have been very promising; indicating that 60% of all those consulted would use the cycle hire scheme, with 90% of those that work in the city centre area indicating that the cycle hire scheme would be useful. The scheme is further supported by the fact that 44% of respondents were more likely to use public transport if combined with a hired bike to complete their daily commute. This means fewer cars on the road and subsequently a better and healthier, environment to work, live and play in. Liverpool City Council is using £1.5 million of Local Sustainable Transport Funding (LSTF) from the Department for Transport (DfT) to deliver the cycle hire scheme. Cyclists will be able to pay for the service via credit or debit card or even through a mobile phone APP. Plans are also being put forward to make a number of electric-assist bikes available for hire, as well as installing points for charging low-carbon vehicles – further boosting the cycle hire stations’ credentials as green travel facilities.

With Commercial District BID being involved in the consultation process, we’ve seen that the responses show that it has the potential to be a huge success. It’s a great coup for the city; not only will it make the city a safer place to live and work, it also brings countless many health benefits. With people using the cycle hire scheme to get around they’ll be leading healthier lifestyles - it’ll also mean less cars on the road, meaning less traffic pollution.”

The scheme has been affectionately dubbed ‘Scousicles’ with many residents looking forward to its implementation; after all, nine out of ten people have said they would, or would possibly, use the scheme when it’s introduced. Businesses within the Commercial District BID have also shown interest with the scheme. Jenny Stewart, Chief Operating Officer at Liverpool Chamber of Commerce said: “We’re working with businesses across Liverpool to develop sustainable travel plans, most of which have been keen to know more about the cycle hire scheme and how it can benefit both their employees and visitors. HERE IN THE COMMERCIAL DISTRICT BID, WE LIKE TO SEE OUR MEMBERS INTERACT, NETWORK AND CONNECT. HERE’S WHAT HAPPENED WHEN FRANK MCKENNA OF DOWNTOWN LIVERPOOL IN BUSINESS AND DEAN BEE OF GOURMET KINGDOM GOT CHATTING...

Nice to meet you, both – tell us about yourselves and your businesses? FM: I’m Frank McKenna, Chief Executive of Downtown Liverpool in Business. We set up in 2004 and are based within the Commercial District BID at New Zealand House. We put on fantastic events, but not just as networking opportunities; there are also some covering the important policy issues affecting Liverpool and the wider city region. We also do a lot to campaign for any issues which affect the private sector and do what we can to make a real change. DB: My name’s Dean Bee and I am one half of the business Gourmet Kingdom, along with my partner, Andy Fernandez. It all started as a Coffee Republic franchise back in November 2008. Andy worked for British Airways and I was working for an environmental company as an account manager at the time, but we’d always dreamt of being our own bosses. We’d looked through some franchise magazines and came across Coffee Republic, which just seemed perfect - plus we loved the brand. We opened our own franchise but after a while we became disillusioned – not long after Coffee Republic went under. We realised how much we wanted to have control over our own company, so we dusted ourselves down and did it for ourselves from scratch. We had an idea for creating a catering arm to our offering when we began to see gaps in other catering companies’ offerings. We’re proud to say we now have a two year old, independent catering and coffee company.

So, Frank - have you been involved in the business throughout its life? FM: Yes, I founded the business, so it’s my baby, so to speak! We set up here nearly ten years ago; we’ve since set up the Downtown brand in Lancashire, Leeds and Manchester. These are all very successful ventures, but the HQ and the heart of the brand still remains in Liverpool. The great thing about Liverpool is that, over the past ten years, there has been untold development – but there’s still a lot more to come and so many more opportunities available.

What have been your stand-out business moments thus far? FM: I think we’ve helped to change the culture of Liverpool – we’ve been able to help facilitate the relationship between the public and private sectors. Additionally, the work we’ve done with Liverpool John Moores University and Liverpool Community College means that we’ve also made ties within the education sector. We go into these places of study and introduce our wide range of members to the students which in turn enables them to see the opportunities available

out there to start up their own businesses. To us, it’s the entrepreneurial and business mind-set that we’re trying to engrain within the city that we’re proud to be a part of – and there’s more to come!! DB: We pride ourselves on service and dedication to our customers. We love seeing our regular customers on a daily basis and enjoy creating real relationships with them. We know our customers and we know what they want – if we don’t, we ask. If a client wants a particular type of sandwich, we’ll make it for them – the way they want it. We work hard to make sure the products we provide are suited to their individual taste. In a professional capacity, we recently won an award for our customer service at the Lifestyle Monthly Magazine Awards, which we were delighted to win! Also, we have recently secured a fantastic contract with Weightmans so watch this space!

What made you both establish your businesses here in the BID?? DB: The best thing for us was the rates themselves. If you think about the rates in other parts of the city, compared to those in the Commercial District BID (and all of the additional professional service companies that surround you), it’s a nobrainer. We’ve seen the Commercial District BID area itself expand and shift, which proves what an ever-changing and dynamic area it is. FM: Like Dean, we knew that the business district was the best place to find our potential clients and members. We’re big supporters of the BID and when you utilise a tiny percentage of a business’ revenue to make a huge difference in their business area, it’s makes sense. The Commercial District BID area now is unrecognisable from how it was a few years ago; it’s safe, it’s clean, it looks the part and there are some great events taking place in the area too. The greatest thing about the Commercial District BID is the sense of community it harbours. Everyone is in this together and want to make a real and tangible difference to the business community; along with the BID, Downtown is a big advocate of that.

How do you think the Commercial District BID has enabled you to enjoy a successful and thriving business? DB: For us, it has a lot to do with footfall and the clientele who pass through our door every day. We’ve been able to win loyalty from these people and nine out of ten times, when someone walks through the door, they’ll come back. We’re proud to have a reputation based on the quality of our food and the quality of our service. This year’s footfall is the best

we’ve had since being in in business. The Food and Drink Festival on Light Night co-organised by the BID meant that the awareness of Gourmet Kingdom rocketed over just one weekend. Particularly, our second year as a member of the Commercial District BID has been our best yet, and we can’t wait to see what else is in store. FM: If you want to go out and network, it’s right here on your doorstep – what more could you ask for?

Here at Commercial District BID, we’re very proud of the fantastic array of restaurants we have in our area. This section is dedicated to showcasing them; introducing some hidden gems and reminding you of some old favourites. This issue, we introduce you to Japanese Restaurant, Etsu.

ETSU

Located within Beetham Plaza, Etsu is one of the district’s best kept secrets. On first impressions, the wooden entrance and miniature Eastern Garden would suggest you are visiting a traditional Osaka restaurant. As soon as we stepped through the threshold, we were greeted warmly by the staff and after a good look around the typically minimalist Japanese surroundings, we were presented with menus. The great thing about Etsu is the staff’s ability to make you feel right at home. Whether it’s your first time in a Japanese restaurant or you’re an old hand at the art of sushi, Etsu’s staff explain, with care and confidence, their food, to help you make the right choice. Yuko, our attentive waitress, recommended a mix of lightly battered tempura (which comes in both prawn and vegetable options) and sushi with a radish sauce for starters. When the dishes arrived, the presentation was stunning. The battered tempura was light and delicious and the sushi (which came with salmon and prawns) was fresh and smooth. The gentle Japanese music, which acted as a soundtrack to our meal, matched the traditional Japanese crockery and chopsticks and made the whole experience feel as genuine as possible whilst the busy Commercial District outside carried on regardless. For our main course, both myself and my partner both opted for different Bento Boxes containing a range of meat and vegetarian options – both of which proved to be the perfect introduction to Japanese food. Each Bento Box contained a mix of sashimi (raw fish), rice, salad and a stir fry, together with a choice of a meat, fish or vegetable main dish and a choice of accompanying sauces (these included Ponzu, Yaki Niku or the ever popular Teriyaki). Portions are plentiful; so diners unable to finish their portions are welcome to take advantage of the takeaway service. Although we were full to the brim, we did manage to make room for some dessert of Dorayaki (traditional Japanese pancakes), accompanied by some

delicious rice wine Sake. Dave Abe, the owner of Etsu told us that the restaurant was born out of a real passion for good food and his Japanese and Scouse heritage. He said: “I wanted to bring a taste of Japan to Liverpool that was as close and authentic to a real Japanese eatery as possible. Even more selfishly, I wanted to create an opportunity to sample good Japanese food myself!” Dave went on to recommend some of the items that are only available in Etsu, “If you want to try some real Japanese soft drinks, I’d try Calpis, Ohi Ocha and Oolong Tea. If your poison is a bit stronger, you should definitely try our wide range of imported Japanese Sake (rice wine), Shochu (Japanese spirits) and our hugely popular Umeshu (Japanese plum wine).” We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and were incredibly impressed by the attention to detail and quality of service. We both agreed that Etsu is most definitely a place we’d return to in a heartbeat – and are already picking which dishes we’re going to try next time!

Tell us what the Night Time Economy Group is: The Night Time Economy Group was set up by the Commercial District BID to provide a platform for likeminded businesses to meet and discuss the evening economy in the area. Tell us about any upcoming plans for the Night Time Economy Group: You may have read in the news recently that Liverpool retained its purple flag status. The purple flag is a prestigious national award which recognises safe, clean and wellmanaged city centres at night. The judges deemed that Liverpool city centre is a perfect example to other towns and cities for its night-time experience. As a result, we are working on a proposal to generate a Liverpool BID insurance policy which recognises Liverpool’s status as a purple flag holder reducing the cost of insurance to night time economy businesses. This is just one of the items on our agenda at the moment and we welcome any organisation that would like to get involved. Tell us about how businesses can get involved with the Night Time Economy Group: If any businesses would like to get involved in the Night Time Economy Group, we meet every quarter at a selected member’s venue in the Commercial District. history

In 1207, King John (1166-1216) founded the town and borough of ‘Leverpul’, and our wonderful city began its steady climb from being a tiny, obscure, medieval fishing hamlet to its current exalted status as a 21st century world-class city and UNESCO World Heritage Port. To defend the port and town, a great castle was built, sometime around 1235, and it stood on what is now Derby Square. This great bastion completely dominated what was then a ridge, about 20 feet or so higher than the land is now. The castle commanded the pool that had given the town its name. The River Mersey that was to be the town’s life-blood; and the 3,000 acres of the Stochestede (Toxteth) Forest, to the south, and which John claimed as his own, private hunting reserve. The castle also strategically overlooked the vast expanse of the Great Heath to the east and the rivers, farms, woodlands, and ancient Everton Ridge, to the north. Castle Street took its name from this huge structur, and became what it remains, one of Liverpool’s most important thoroughfares.

When one walks down this street, towards our impressive, 18th Century Town Hall, and as on so many of our city-centre streets, it is necessary to look up as well as around! This is because the architecture of so many of the Castle Street’s buildings is simply stunning, and reflects how the merchants, bankers, and city-fathers of Victorian and Edwardian Liverpool saw their town as the ‘new Rome’. On the corner with Derby Square stands the former North and South Wales Bank; later The Midland Bank and then, Trials Hotel and Bar. Now this is a boutique hotel and restaurant, known simply as 62 Castle Street. Amongst so many other remarkable buildings and on the corner of Brunswick Street, is the former Adelphi Bank, with its pink and grey façade and green onion dome. ‘Adelphi’ means ‘brotherly love’, and on the building’s splendid bronze doors you can see scenes depicting David and Jonathan, Castor and Pollux, Patroclus and Achilles, and Roland and Oliver - some of whose relationships were perhaps a little more than simply brotherly!

Local popular historian, Ken Pye explores the history of Castle Street one of Liverpool’s original ‘Seven Streets’

Further along on the opposite side of Castle Street is the delightful, L-shaped Queen’s Avenue Arcade. Next to this is the former British and Foreign Marine Insurance Company Building, which was built in 1889, and is Grade II Listed. Of special interest are the highly-detailed, coloured mosaic friezes that decorate the building halfway up its face; portraying ships from across the ages. Over the street from Queens Arcade stands the Grade II* Listed NatWest Bank; originally built as the headquarters of Parr’s Bank. This opened in 1902 and standing inside this commercial ‘palace’ is like being in the grand lounge of an early transatlantic liner - perhaps this had been the architect’s intention.

In a parking lay-by, in front of the bank, sits the ancient Sanctuary Stone. This has been in this position for over 800 years and is one of very few medieval relics that survive in the modern town-centre. There is so much more the see and discover along Castle Street, which is just one of Liverpool’s original ‘Seven Streets’.
