SPRING 2014

Welcome to the Commercial District BID ‘THIS Spring’ publication. We are now on to the third issue of THIS Magazine, something that wouldn’t have been possible without the support and input from the great businesses and people that work within the District. With THIS Spring, we aim to build upon the success of the previous two issues; giving you a further insight into what we have coming up over the next few months.

WELCOME TO THE COMMERCIAL DISTRICT BID ‘THIS SPRING’ PUBLICATION

In this issue we ask you, members of the BID, to tell us your thoughts on the upcoming International Festival of Business and what you are hoping to gain from it. We also take a look at Liverpool Vision’s Business Growth Support Scheme, where we discuss some of the opportunities you have to develop your companies. Also, over the next few pages, and what is very much a recurring theme, we get to meet even more of our members, giving them a platform to tell us more about themselves and their work. Growth is very important to us. To ensure we are meeting our business plan objectives, we have hosted a number of planning sessions with Operating Board members, and of course, the BID team. These sessions have focused on what we can do to continually improve the area and the work we do within it. These sessions also allow us to ensure that projects are being delivered to meet objectives across our four main areas of Environment and Security, Development and Investment, Transport and Access and Marketing and Communications. We want to see all businesses engage with the BID and we want to continually show you the benefits of being a Commercial District BID member. We’re continuing to talk to you, our members, about what makes the Commercial District what it is. We’re telling your stories, so if you’ve got something important to say, or your organisation has done something you are proud of, please get in touch we’d love to share it. Enjoy THIS Spring! Bill Addy Chief Executive Liverpool BID Company

Liverpool’s Lord Mayor, Gary Millar, is hoping to raise even more funds for a number of causes in his last few months in the ceremonial role. In his 12 month term Gary has pledged to raise much-needed funds to tackle cancer and homelessness, help create a safe haven for LGBT youth and support children with special educational needs. Already the Lord Mayor has raised £63,000 which has been achieved in a number of ways, explains Gary: “Some of the ways I am raising funds is asking for donations, auction prizes, raffle prizes, event title sponsorship or simply for people to buy tickets to my fundraising events.” To raise even more money for charity, the Lord Mayor has highlighted even more opportunities for you to get involved; forthcoming fundraising events include the following: March 19th - Charity Lunch at Gusto – with entertainment from the legendary Connie Lush & Victoria Sharpe. Tickets for the event cost £30 and will include a 3-course meal, entertainment, a drink on arrival and a question and answer session with Marie Causer from the Michael Causer Foundation and the Lord Mayor. March 23rd - Michelle and Friends at the Empire Theatre, organised by Michelle and Sylvia Lewis. This fabulous show will be compered by the Scaffold’s Mike McCartney. DOWNTOWN TO HOST IFB BUSINESS WEEK

GENERAL MANAGER OF HOTEL INDIGO WINS TOP AWARD

Downtown Liverpool in Business has agreed a deal with Liverpool Vision to deliver an exclusive ‘Business Week’ at this year’s International Festival for Business (IFB).

The General Manager of Hotel Indigo, Stephanie CannellCorcoran, has been named General Manager of the Year at the annual Hotel Stars Awards. The awards, held in London, aim to recognise hotels and their people for their outstanding performance within the industry, alongside their contribution to the local community in which they operate.

The city’s leading independent private sector lobbying and networking club will be working in partnership with The Women’s Organisation to deliver an innovative and dynamic series of events. These events will include speeches from top business leaders from international brands such as Coca Cola, amongst others. The IFB will deliver over 200 events throughout June and July 2014 with the aim of helping to double UK exports by 2020, whilst generating £100m of new investment into the UK economy. It has been designed to accelerate growth by connecting businesses from around the world. Chief Executive of Downtown Liverpool in Business, Frank McKenna said: “We are delighted that Liverpool is hosting IFB this year, but equally determined that Liverpool businesses get the maximum opportunity to benefit from the festival. We will be bringing top business leaders and leading entrepreneurs to engage directly with the local business community. The Business Week will facilitate genuine involvement for Liverpool firms as part of the Festival programme. In addition to the events, there will be other activities offering access to potential investors, business advisors and wider regional, national and international networks.” Chief Executive at Liverpool Vision, Max Steinberg added: “We look forward to working alongside Downtown in Business and welcome their enthusiasm and involvement. IFB is a UK festival, but it is important that the region’s business community maximises on the opportunities too. This Business Week offers them a chance to do that in a very direct way.”

Hosted by InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG), the awards celebrate IHG hotels and individuals across Europe. Stephanie’s award recognises her outstanding achievements and contribution to Hotel Indigo and the IHG brand. Based on Chapel Street, in the heart of the Commercial District, Hotel Indigo also finished runner-up in the Hotel of the Year Category. Stephanie Cannell-Corcoran, General Manager of Hotel Indigo, said: “This award recognises all the hard work and team effort we’ve put in this year. We’re constantly striving to go the extra mile so guests can expect a consistently top notch experience when visiting our hotel and we’ll continue to work together to keep delivering the same experience each year.” Didier Boidin, vice president of operations, Western Europe, said: “We are fully committed to supporting and developing our people; our hotels are only as good as the people working in them. We aim to provide the right environment, support and the inspiration they need to fulfil their capabilities and these awards are a reflection of the fantastic talent we have working in our hotels across Europe.” For further enquiries about Hotel Indigo Liverpool and the Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill, visit www.hotelindigoliverpool.co.uk

CLAIRE’S CARNIVAL CHARITY NIGHT TO TAKE PLACE Liverpool charity, Claire House will be hosting Claire’s Carnival, a Brazilian Carnival themed charity night on 13th March 2014. The event, which starts at 7.30pm, will take place at Brazilian restaurant, Viva Brazil, based in the heart of the Commercial District on Castle Street. Guests will be treated to a host of carnival-themed entertainment including samba dancers, magician Lee Wellzy and of course, an authentic Brazilian band. The Wirral-based hospice, which has an office on Edmund Street, currently looks after 160 families, with each child visiting Claire House for 17 nights a year. During their stay, the children have one-to-one care and can use the hydrotherapy pool, enjoy a music therapy session, sing karaoke in The Den and take part in arts and crafts therapies. The money raised from the charity night will be used to provide this specialist care for children from the area who are suffering with life limiting illnesses. Tony Langan, Corporate Fundraiser at Claire House said:

STEPHEN EDWARDS

“This will be the third year we have held this event, with the previous two having both been great successes.

What do you do in the BID? I work at RBS as an analyst.

It’s not just a great event and amazing value for money, it’s also a very important part of our fundraising calendar - we’re hoping to raise around £2,000 from the night. This money is used to provide specialist care for children and to also help support their families when they need us most.”

Where’s your favourite spot in the BID: Panna – great coffee and a great atmosphere!

Tickets cost £35 and will include a ‘Claire’ caipirinha cocktail on arrival, alongside the full Rodizio menu with complimentary beer and wine. Funds will go to help Claire House continue to do the impressive work it does.

What do you like most about the BID: It’s very clean and tidy. It’s such a nice place in a good location to work in every day.

MORECROFTS OFFER GUIDANCE TO INDEPENDENT BUSINESSES WITH NEW BUSINESS M.O.T

MATTHEW COLE SALAD BOWL WWW.YOURSALADBOWL.COM

Commercial District-based law firm Morecrofts, is providing guidance to the city’s small to medium sized enterprises with their new business M.O.T. The service is designed to ensure that local firms are fully equipped with practical knowledge and in easy access of sufficient legal protection. Donal Bannon, Partner at Morecrofts on Tithebarn Street, said: “All too often small business owners become so focused on the day-to-day management of their businesses. As such they simply don’t have the time or the financial resources to step back, take stock and ensure the business is legally protected. Our business M.O.T check will provide companies with a comprehensive consultation, whereby we will discuss a vast range of legal aspects such as business structure, intellectual property protection and financial plans. Following the check, we will go on to deliver pragmatic advice that is tailored to individual needs, as well as producing a report outlining any subjects that may require further action.” A recent UK survey revealed that the top ten legal mistakes made by entrepreneurs include the practice of carrying out less urgent tasks, in preference to legal aspects.Donal added: “By implementing thorough legal security at an early stage, it would cost businesses much less than having to resolve future complications when they arise. This is why our business M.O.T should be performed as soon as possible to provide peace of mind and of course, ensure the ongoing prosperity of the business.” For more information, contact Morecrofts on 0151 236 8871 or visit www.morecrofts.co.uk

CYCLE HIRE OPERATOR ON-BOARD FOR APRIL LAUNCH Liverppol is gearing-up for its new cycle hire scheme with the appointment of an official operator. UK supplier HourBike Ltd. has been chosen to run the scheme – which is set to be the biggest in the UK outside London. HourBike won the deal after a competitive tender process. This announcement paves the way for the scheme’s launch in April, with the roll-out of up to 100 bikes at 10 city centre stations. By July, there will be 500 bikes at 50 stations with 1,000 bikes at more than 100 stations across the city, by March 2015. Based in Surrey, HourBike launched its Cycle Hire Service in 2007 and is currently running or installing systems in Dumfries, Lincoln, Nottingham, Reading and Southport. The company also acted as consultants on Moscow’s large cycle hire scheme. They will be bringing this expertise and experience to Liverpool to deliver a hi-tech, user-friendly service, which aims to get thousands of people in the city building cycling into their daily lives. Mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson, said: “Liverpool’s Cycle Hire scheme has the potential to bring huge benefits to our city, providing a convenient and environmentally-friendly way of getting around for hundreds of people including local residents and commuters, students and tourists. We’re delighted to have HourBike on board. They have extensive experience in running schemes around the country. I know they are as excited as we are to be delivering such a large, ambitious project here in Liverpool.” Liverpool City Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport, Councillor Tim Moore, said: “This is a really exciting project for our city, and I’m delighted that we have been able to secure an operator with such a strong pedigree to deliver it. We really want to put Liverpool at the forefront of sustainable transport, limiting the growth of car journeys and widening the appeal and accessibility of cycling for local people.”

COMMERCIAL DISTRICT BID SPONSORS LIVERPOOL TOURISM AWARDS Commercial District BID is a main sponsor at this year’s Liverpool City Region Tourism Awards. The best of Liverpool City Region’s £3.4 billion per year visitor economy will be honoured at a glamorous ceremony at St George’s Hall. The high-profile event, which will be held on Thursday 22nd May, is now in its third decade and recognises outstanding contributions to the City Region’s tourism sector. The sector supports 46,000 jobs and has helped to make the City Region the 5th most popular destination for international visitors in the UK. A panel of leading industry experts, including Peter Avis, Manager of Richard Branson’s award-winning Babylon restaurant at the Kensington Roof Gardens, Hamish Anderson, Head Sommelier and wine buyer for The Tate, and Helena Egan, Head of Destination Marketing Sales for Trip Advisor, will help to select the winners. The awards will showcase the very best practice across the industry with 16 categories for excellence across a wide range of sectors. Attended by around 500 people from public and private sector organisations, the awards are held on behalf of the Liverpool City Region Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP). The awards also create an incentive which encourages companies to continue to strive to deliver the very best visitor experience possible. Other sponsors supporting the awards include Liverpool ONE, City Central BID and Liverpool Hoteliers Association. Mike Doran, Communications Manager at Commercial District BID, said: “We are delighted to be one of the main sponsors for the Liverpool Tourism Awards. NAMA ZARROUG KIRWANS WWW.KIRWANS.CO.UK

What do you want to see more of from your BID? We want to see the continued positive representation of the Commercial District. For many businesses 2013 was about survival, but I hope that over the next 12 months those within the BID can focus on growth and investment. With the BID providing both support and exposure to new opportunities, we have the necessary structures in place to achieve this. At Kirwans, we’re sensing a quiet but definite growing confidence amongst the business community. I would hope to witness a renewed enthusiasm for business in 2014 as that confidence in the economy continues to grow, with the BID leading the way. It’s a great time to be part of the Business Improvement District and we’re delighted to have a base here. QUICK FIRE QUESTIONS Favourite Restaurant in the BID? Restaurant Bar & Grill. If you could visit one BID organisation for the day which one would it be? Liverpool Town Hall or Peaches & Cream on Dale Street. Best kept secret in the BID? Chop Chop Korean Noodle bar on Fenwick Street. Best thing about Liverpool? The people. You know it’s Spring when… The sun shines.

Tell us about the business. Kirwans is an established legal practice, which has been in operation since 1947. We offer a full range of services to both commercial clients and individuals alike, providing legal expertise, representation and advocacy. Our breadth of practice areas, which include Commercial Property, Dispute Resolution, and Family, allows us to draw from a wide range of experiences across a spectrum of legal disciplines. This enables us to consider the bigger picture for our clients – no matter what their needs are. What are the advantages of being part of the BID? We recently returned to the heart of Liverpool’s Commercial District BID and have been impressed at the remarkable transformation of the area into an established leading business community. It’s an exciting and successful time for the Commercial District and long may it continue. The main advantages of being located within a growing, thriving business community speak for themselves. However, the increased opportunities for new business relationships and watching the SME community become more established within the area have been particular highlights. Aims for your organisation over the next 12 months? Stability and growth - we certainly won’t be standing still. We have a number of priorities to implement in 2014 to ensure that we are best positioned to serve both the changing needs of our clients and the changing landscape of the legal services market. Biggest challenges over the next 12 months? It’s no secret that it has been a particularly tough time for the legal sector. Law firms across the country have faced unprecedented challenges in 2013 and the situation looks likely to continue in 2014. Our biggest task will be growing a business against the backdrop of further Government reforms. However, adaptation is key to the success of every business and those who are able to respond to changes in the market will not only survive but thrive over the coming years.

ETSU LAUNCHES GLUTEN-FREE MENU

Japanese restaurant Etsu, located right here in the heart of the Commercial District at Beetham Plaza, has launched a gluten-free menu. The new additions will run alongside their recently updated traditional offerings of sushi and other classic Japanese dishes such as Katsu Curry or Chicken Teriyaki. Gluten-free foods are usually reserved for those suffering from celiac disease, however with more and more people becoming aware of the health benefits associated with a gluten-free lifestyle it has grown increasingly popular. Celebrities such as Victoria Beckham, Rachel Wiesz and Gwyneth Paltrow have all been linked to the gluten-free lifestyle, which has been said to contribute to increased energy, weight loss and a reduction in belly bloat. David Abe, Owner of Etsu said: “It took us nearly 18 months of planning back when we opened in 2007 to come up with our offering - we thought there was a real lack of authentic Japanese style restaurants in Liverpool. Since then we have been committed to improving our offering with new meals to suit different tastes. As more and more people are now suffering from celiac disease and with more people becoming aware of the health benefits of gluten-free food, we’ve designed a menu that encompasses that. It seemed only logical to produce some of our classic dishes as gluten-free options as we already make our menu fresh from scratch anyway.” For more information on menu choices and for reservations please visit www.etsu-restaurant.co.uk or call on 0151 2367530.

LIVERPOOL’S FIRST ROCK ‘N’ ROLL MARATHON IS COMING THIS SPRING

SPOTLIGHT ON ÁLVARO COSTELA SÁNCHEZ SOCIAL MEDIA OFFICER, LIVERPOOL BID COMPANY

Parts of The Commercial District will play host to Liverpool’s first ever Rock ‘n’ Roll marathon due to take place on Sunday 25th May. With over 10,000 runners expected to take part, the marathon is shaping up to be one of Liverpool’s biggest events of the year. Starting at 9am at the Albert Dock, the route will pass by many of Liverpool’s iconic landmarks including Anfield and Goodison Park, the Chinese Arch and the Liver Buildings before finishing at the Echo Arena. On Friday 16th May, Liverpool will be unlocking the doors of its internationally-renowned museums, galleries and heritage sites, many of which are within the Commercial District, in a springtime celebration of the region’s arts and culture.

Hola! My name is Álvaro, I am from Granada, a lovely small city in the south of sunny Spain. I have been working for the BID since December 2011 when I first started with a temporary European placement. You might recognise me for my lovely Spanish-Scouse accent or my street banner on Old Hall Street. (I didn’t decide to be there, I promise!)

Thousands of inquisitive fun-seekers will descend upon Liverpool, to discover and celebrate Liverpool’s impressive world-class cultural offer.

Working for Commercial District has been quite challenging as it is a big change from the retail and leisure focus from our sister BID - City Central, but I am getting better and better at networking events.

LightNight visitors can expect spectacular light projections, interactive street performances, exhibition launches, heritage tours, open studios, live music, hands-on art workshops, dancing through the night and so much more.

I look after the BID social media, graphic design, websites, e-newsletters but, also anything our members could need, from dressing as an elf in Christmas or a giant ciggy for Love Where You Live, so don’t be shy and ask… you might get a nice Spanish lad involved in one of your projects.

Christina Grogan, Open Culture - LightNight Producer said: “The LightNight festival is really gathering momentum each year, with thousands more people flocking to the city to re-discover and celebrate Liverpool’s staggering arts offer. This year’s LightNight is sure to capture our imaginations with cultural venues of all sizes opening their doors until late alongside performances, walks, talks and more!

I love travelling and discovering new places. Before coming to Liverpool, I lived in Valladolid (close to Madrid) and in beautiful Florence (Italy) for a year while doing my Erasmus. But at the moment I am happy to call Liverpool home and thanks to Ryanair and National Express I can keep travelling all over the World while enjoying living in Liverpool! By the way, I am open to new destinations.

Everybody is invited to come and experience LightNight, Liverpool’s annual one-night arts and culture festival.”

What can I offer you as a member? Support promoting any workshop, networking event, offer, job vacancy, press release or activity you want to spread the word in and around the District. Commercial District is huge and I still don’t know you all, so drop me an email or tweet me and let see how we can help you! The more connected we are, the better! let’s talk

“We believe this truly is a program which differentiates us from how banking has been done in the past. For us, it’s about growing the businesses, not just through capital alone, but through its people, infrastructure and capability. We can provide the insight and expertise to allow this to happen; it is this notion that forms the pillars of this scheme. We feel that incubating businesses in this way, with this level of support, will give them the stimulus to help them push on and grow. Our aim is to create ‘Growth Champions of the Future’ to help stimulate business in Liverpool.” With three major universities in Liverpool, it’s safe to assume that there is a lot of local, raw talent at hand. However, there is a fear that this much sought-after local talent will leave, come the end of their education, for cities such as London and Manchester. This incubator scheme is a step in the right direction in helping to retain them. “There is an awful lot of great talent here in Liverpool; many are staying on after university with some even setting up their own businesses. It is of great importance to try to retain the wealth of local talent that we have here and we’re hoping our scheme will help show that Liverpool is a great place to be in business. The imminent International Festival for Business is right around the corner, seeing hundreds of businesses from around the world embark upon Liverpool to see what it has to offer. It is the ability to attract high profile events like this that show that Liverpool is a great place to work. We want to add to that. There are many national businesses working in the city and the wider area. There is nothing from stopping us helping the businesses here get bigger or even attracting more international companies to ply their trade here.” We all know that the Commercial District is a great part of the city; it’s a brilliant place to work, live and play with a multitude of apartments, bars, restaurants and places of work all a stone’s throw away. What was it about the area that has made it the home of Santander’s first incubator programme?

Managing Director of the North Division for Santander Corporate and Commercial Banking, Damian McGann, recently took some time out of his busy schedule to meet with THIS. He tells us about an exciting development taking place in the Commercial District at Santander’s offices in St. Paul’s Square. Santander, as part of their strategy to become the bank of choice for small and medium sized enterprises (SME’s) has launched an incubator business growth scheme in a bid to create ‘Growth Champions of the Future’. As Managing Director for the North Division, Damian is responsible for 19 offices including those in Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Chester and Warrington. The Liverpool offices have gone from strength to strength, employing over 2,000 people in their Bootle-based Headquarters and a further 40 more in the Commercial District. What’s more, the St. Paul’s Square-based office will now be home to Santander’s first Incubator Business Growth Scheme. “We’ll be welcoming eight businesses to take residency in our offices for a 12 month period - completely free of charge. We have a great space in our St. Paul’s Square office which we’ve partitioned off to create a real hub for business start-ups to grow, learn from others and develop their networks. The office space, however, is only a small part of what the businesses will receive. They’ll also get access to the bank’s Breakthrough programme which offers support with master classes, forums and mentoring with other local fast growing enterprises. The criteria for applying to become one of the eight businesses are pretty loose; great businesses often don’t have a template. As long as you’re in the Merseyside area and employ no more than three people you’re eligible to apply.” The Commercial District is home to some brilliant start-up businesses; and we are sure the support that this project provides will help them progress even further – boosting Liverpool’s workplace landscape. Where did the idea to do this come from and what’s the overall aim?

“Santander has a long heritage in Liverpool, we employ over 2,000 people in Bootle and we have our existing offices at St. Paul’s Square. We moved to the St Paul’s Square offices in November 2012 having originally set up at The Plaza Building in 2009, so we’ve been in the Commercial District for quite a while now. It’s brilliant to have so many great businesses on our doorstep, something that is key for our incubator scheme and of course, the Breakthrough programme.” So, if you’re a budding SME that needs a nudge in the right direction, it’d be wise to get in touch. However, if you are an established business that would like to get involved and help, what should you do? “We are really keen to speak to businesses in Liverpool. Any business that wants to get involved should contact us directly. Any local business that can add value to our project would be a great benefit to us and the small businesses coming through the scheme. The Breakthrough programme is exactly that, taking learning from businesses that have been there and done that.” The whole scheme sounds like a great idea that will certainly help push Liverpool as a business city in the right direction. Should the campaign be a success, it is likely that that it will be rolled out in other cities; however what does the future hold for the Incubator scheme in Liverpool? “This scheme is one of huge importance for Santander. We recognise that we have great relationships with many successful businesses; we want to leverage these contacts to help pass on this expertise and knowledge to the next set of successful businesses. This is certainly something we’re looking at continuing moving forward.” Last year Santander increased its SME lending on Merseyside by 18%, with £180m of new lending to small firms in the region. The Incubator scheme is another step in the right direction for Santander in becoming the bank of choice for Liverpool’s SME’s. www.santanderbreakthrough.co.uk

let’s meet

Walking down Tithebarn Street, you may have noticed a new addition to the scenery; just below eye level is PANNA. We took a walk down the concrete steps and enjoyed a flat white coffee with owners Peter and Ivana.

own brand of service to the Commercial District – we want to create a real community vibe.” As THIS looks around at the eclectic clientele – mums with prams, young professionals, budding artists – we can feel the community spirit that Ivana was talking about. Peter adds: “We wanted this to be a place where people can come to relax and take an hour out of their busy lives to enjoy a great cup of coffee and a warm welcome.” As we pressed for more information about the coffee we were drinking, a wry smile crept across Ivana’s face: “We drank a lot of coffee trying to find the perfect blend. We travelled pretty much the whole of the UK until we found the blend that was right for us.”

“We wanted this to be a place where people can come to relax and take an hour out of their busy lives” Peter explained: “From the very beginning we knew that we only wanted to sell our own unique coffee blend. We could easily take coffee from one of the big boys on the market, but this wasn’t and isn’t our philosophy of doing business. It took us a bit longer than anticipated but now we’re so proud to say that we have our very own PANNA blend!” We finished the last drop of our coffee and were ready to slip off just before the lunch time rush began, but not before asking for a piece of advice from these two budding entrepreneurs: “Never, ever give up.” We’re sincerely glad they didn’t. Pop just below street level for a cup of coffee and escape the rat race for half an hour – urban therapy at its finest.

As soon as we opened the doors of PANNA, we could tell there was something distinctively different about this café and we weren’t wrong. Having opened in July 2013 by partners Peter Barboriak and Ivana Borosova, PANNA is a new breed of café for the Commercial District. A contemporarily designed café with a distinct rustic menu, PANNA (meaning virgin or pure in Slovakian), even boasts its very own blend of coffee. We had to know more – Peter explains: “Our menu is inspired by our love of fresh ingredients straight from the garden, washed under running water and eaten as they are; full in flavours, rich in texture and fine in taste. I suppose this comes down to our childhood when we never bought any strawberries, raspberries or apples but instead grew pretty much all of our vegetable and fruit in the garden.” So, why the Commercial District? Ivana says: “We live down the road! It just seemed natural to us – we’re so familiar with the area and love the buzz around here. We also both have a long history in the hospitality sector, working in hotels in the area so it was a no-brainer. We wanted to bring our

let’s debate This summer will see Liverpool and The Commercial District become the epicentre of the business world. The highly anticipated International Festival of Business (IFB) is on the horizon and it is not long now until businesses and corporations from all over the world descend upon the city.

The festival will run throughout June and July 2014 with the aim of helping to double UK exports by 2020 whilst generating £100m of new investment for the UK Economy. With over 200 events lined up, the festival is designed to accelerate growth by connecting businesses from around the world. It truly is an exciting time to be in business in Liverpool, so with that, we wanted to know what some of our BID members anticipate from the festival and what’s they’re most looking forward to. Here’s what they said… Chris Brown, Director of Marketing Liverpool, said: “It’s clear that the IFB will have a major impact on the city’s economy for years to come, but one sector which will see an immediate boost is the visitor economy. The tens of thousands coming for IFB 2014 are not just business people; they are visitors who want to make the most of their time here and experience the best of the Liverpool City Region. The IFB cultural programme will be the perfect complement to the main activity of the festival, whilst the return of the giants at the end of the festival promises to be one of those unmissable moments in 2014. Together with events such as The Open Championship and the Biennial, businesses working in our visitor economy are right to be so optimistic.”

Anna Heyes, Managing Director of Active Profile said; “There will be an international spotlight on Liverpool in 2014 and we are very proud of the city’s ambitious plans. We began our planning process some months ago to develop an IFB events programme that would relate specifically to our specialist areas of PR and communications work. As a result, Active Profile teamed up with Place North West to host PlaceEXPO (BID is a partner of PlaceExpo), a series of property, regeneration and investment events to tie in with each of the IFB thematic weeks. PlaceEXPO will present a ‘pavilion’ style exhibition and networking setting throughout the IFB, to showcase the many exceptional investment opportunities available in the region.”

James Rush, Chair of the Liverpool Hoteliers Association (LHA), said: “I am delighted to be Chair of the Liverpool Hoteliers Association (LHA) during such an exciting year, which includes the IFB. Just as IFB is a great platform to showcase doing business in the UK and in Liverpool in particular, it is equally a great opportunity for Liverpool Hoteliers to show what we are made of.

12

Examples can be taken from the great Capital of Culture legacy; IFB presents a unique and unprecedented opportunity to demonstrate that Liverpool and the LHA are truly open for business. Liverpool Hoteliers will be welcoming both national and international visitors and the LHA will play a integral role in delivering great products and services as part of a joined up City approach which includes our key partners Liverpool Vision, Marketing Liverpool, the LEP and ACC Liverpool.”

Frank McKenna, Chief Executive of Downtown in Business said: “The IFB is a fantastic opportunity for Liverpool City Region. Delivering the largest business event in the UK for over a decade, it will bring 250,000 visitors from over 125 countries into the city, with a predicted £100m direct investment into the UK. At a recent ‘Countdown to IFB’ event hosted by Downtown in Business, many local business owners expressed their concerns about missing opportunities for them to get involved and maximise on the opportunities the IFB will bring. As such, Downtown Liverpool in Business has agreed a deal with Liverpool Vision to deliver an exclusive ‘Business Week’ at the IFB. We will be working in partnership with the Women’s Organisation to deliver a series of events in order to ensure Liverpool businesses get the maximum opportunity to benefit from the festival. The Business Week will bring top business leaders and leading entrepreneurs to engage directly with the local business community, and will facilitate genuine involvement for Liverpool firms in the Festival programme. It’s important that the local region benefits from this opportunity, and many local businesses want to make sure this doesn’t pass them by.”

LAW & SOCIAL MEDIA ENTHUSIAST WENDY BROWN FROM CANTER LEVIN & BERG MEETS PROPERTY AGENT PAUL MORAN FROM MASON OWEN.

THIS: Nice to meet you both. Tell us about yourselves and a bit about what you do. WB: I’m Wendy Brown. I’m the Social Media Editor for Canter, Levin and Berg Solicitors based on Dale Street. We are a legal firm; we cover family law, employment, crime, wills and probate, personal injury, professional negligence and disputes. PM: Hello, I’m Paul Moran - I’m the Managing Director of Mason Owen, commercial property consultants based in Liverpool, just off Cook Street. As our title suggests we concentrate on commercial property – we don’t touch residential. We are heavily involved in all aspects of the Liverpool commercial property market – retail, office, industrial – we do it all. THIS: How do you think location affects your business, especially being in the Commercial District? WB: I’ve never really thought about that, to be honest. We’re obviously in a great location being so central in the Commercial District and have never thought we’d be anywhere else? However, we do go out and deliver surgeries in communities so we’re accessible to all our clients. We’re very nicely situated near the courts because we do a lot of family and criminal law cases - that helps. PM: We wouldn’t want to be anywhere other than in the Commercial District. I was just at a meeting in Columbus Quay. Although they were nice offices they are completely out of it, with nowhere to go at lunch time, no shops nearby, etc.. On top of that, most of our meetings are with clients or potential clients or other professionals such as solicitors and accountants for example, who tend to be gathered in the City Centre. We’re also very lucky when it comes to parking as we can park ten or eleven cars outside our building – not many Commercial District occupiers have that benefit. THIS: Do you think it’s important to promote the range of businesses that reside in the Commercial BID? PM: We tend to have long established relationships because we are a 47 year old business. There are plenty of other businesses who are maybe two-three years old who have never used a solicitor or a surveyor before. Their first thought might be Manchester, they may not understand what there is available in Liverpool and specifically in the Commercial District. So I think a directory of members would be very useful to smaller and younger businesses in the area. THIS: What do you think the key ingredient is to being a successful business? WB: Service! This is the vital factor in keeping clients and sourcing new ones. We’re proud to provide our clients with a first-class service so they come back time and time again. We find that our clients really do like to spread the word that we’ve done a great job for them. PM: I would say the clients, however the two have to be put together. You wouldn’t get clients without the service to keep them bringing their business to you. THIS: What has been your stand-out business moment of your career?

WB: In my previous job for a video sharing website I was given a 10-day deadline to recruit and train a team of 10 reporters with no advertising budget or leads. Having absolutely no recruitment training, I employed the use of Social Media to successfully achieve my goal. A few months later this led to me interviewing one of my favourite bands, The Undertones – with the added bonus of pogo-dancing onstage with them during their sound check! That’s one ticked off my bucket list! Also, after only being at CLB for just six months I was nominated for Business Development Manager of the Year at the 10th Annual Livercool Awards. I didn’t win but it was still an honour to be nominated. PM: From a business point of view, it would be when we first won the Estates Gazette North West Agent of the year - we won it for three years running between 2005 and 2007, then again in 2009. However the first time was quite special, it was also great to beat some of the really big London based firms which we felt was a great achievement. THIS: What are your biggest challenges for 2014? WB: To sustain growth and keep going after all the changes the Government has introduced to the legal system. The legal profession is facing a lot of difficulty at the moment with a lot of smaller firms having gone into administration as they couldn’t afford to carry on. We have to find ways to bring new business in. The family department generally relies on Legal Aid now so there will be people who can’t afford to get divorced, for example. As a result, they will have to sort themselves out in court. We have to keep changing our business approach to ensure we are doing our best to support these individuals when they need us most.. PM: Property has been hit really badly by the recession - it has been hit by the crisis for the last 4- 5 years harder than some though perhaps not as hard as the legal profession. It’s brought us to a position where we are a smaller firm than we were 5 years ago. We have seen clients go bankrupt on us. We think we have done well to get where we are and now things are hopefully picking up we have to find a way of riding that wave out of the recession. We will be building on what we have got and bringing new businesses and clients in and ultimately trying to get ourselves back to where we were 5 years ago. THIS: What are your hopes for 2014? PM: I’m positive actually, because the economy seems to be up moving again. We are a business that does well in when the economy is buoyant. We have to be good at what we do, we have to have a good team, which we have got. We have to have good clients, which we have got, it’s for us to make the most of an improving economy, so yes we have a degree of confidence for the future. WB: We are pleased that we are still here. We have been going since 1947; we were the first Liverpool firm that took notice of the injuries that the Dockers were getting in the 1970s. We were known as the Dockers’ lawyers - the first people to represent them and win them compensation. We’re very proud of that and intend to be here for the people of the city well into the future. THIS: Thanks to you both for taking part in ‘Let’s Connect’.

It’s no secret that Liverpool is a city full of potential with clear economic strengths and a global outlook; it is, after all, recognised as one of the UK’s leading business destinations. Working within the strategic leadership of the Mayor of Liverpool and the City Council, Liverpool Vision is the economic development company designed to accelerate the city’s growth and build a sustainable economy. Liverpool Vision has played a pivotal role in co-ordinating the delivery of the city’s economic and physical renaissance, transforming Liverpool into the fastest growing UK economy outside of London. Key successes have included claiming the European Capital of Culture in 2008, the World Expo in Shanghai in 2010 and the Liverpool In London project – and now they are working hard as the key delivery body for the International Festival for Business, taking place this summer across the Liverpool City Region. It’s fantastic that Liverpool is generating so much outside interest - and the investment opportunities, business benefits and outstanding quality of life are helping attract businesses to the city. But what about the local businesses that start and thrive here – how do they fit into the wider growth picture? We have a great deal of talented individuals and flourishing organisations right here in the city. It’s vital that we capitalise on this talent to further improve the local economy by bringing in more investment and creating valuable

BID

SMEs in the

Here at Commercial District BID, we’re incredibly proud of the range of members we have based in the area – both big and small. So proud, in fact, that we want to showcase them in all of their glory; say hello to some of the SMEs in the Commercial District... Name: Neil Dutton

Name: Catherine Higgins

Business: Water Street Marketing Company

Business: Catherine Higgins Law

Sector: Marketing & PR

Sector: Legal

Co-directors Neil Dutton and Ian Dixon opened the doors to Water Street Marketing Company on October 1st, 2012. Specialising in providing jargon-free, no-nonsense marketing services and support for micro, small and medium–sized businesses, Water Street Marketing prides itself on understanding customers’ frustrations when it comes to marketing. Both Directors have a long track record of working with SME’s and believe this puts them in pole position to find solutions and drive their client’s growth in a creative and effective way. Location is a key factor in their success: “Locating ourselves in the Commercial District BID allows us to be visible in the city and build our networks. We chose to join the BID to underline our commitment to doing business in the city, to be part of the business community and to keep ourselves informed of any opportunities that may arise. The BID has helped us to raise our profile and that of our clients, and has helped to build our network of contacts and support. The BID is where business happens” The organisation celebrated a successful first year in business in 2013 and is looking to build on this during 2014: “It’s been a very positive start to the year and we are excited to be working with both existing and new clients on some really great projects.”

16

Legal firm Catherine Higgins Law is based in Cotton Exchange; at the very heart of the Commercial District. Specialising in work involving claims for damages for personal injury, the firm’s forte is in asbestos0related illnesses. We met with the woman behind the firm, Catherine Higgins, to find out more: “Many of our clients are elderly, and we tailor our services to meet their needs. We also provide a Wills and Probate service, and elderly client advice. Our clients may be apprehensive about dealing with solicitors, and usually need our services at a stressful time in their lives. We work hard to make the process as easy as possible for them, and pride ourselves on going the extra mile to give them the service they absolutely deserve.” “Having worked in this district throughout my time as a solicitor, I wouldn’t want to work anywhere else. I love the mix of the old and contemporary buildings. The Cotton Exchange is a really convenient location – handy for the courts, parking and public transport. We have all the services we need on hand. As a bonus, we enjoy the free Walking Lunches organised by Health@Work, which give my team and I an opportunity to get out at lunch for a look around the area with likeminded people.”

Name: Mathew Giles Business: MgMaStudio Sector: Construction/ Professional Services

Being a BID member offers support that Gaelle believes she wouldn’t get anywhere else: “The Commercial District BID offers great networking opportunities and has provided a platform for us to grow our business with local companies. We have forged excellent working relationships with our clients. We’ve become part of their business ‘family’ and they of ours.” Gaelle expects their busy start to the year to continue and leaves us with an air of intrigue:

Sitting in the surroundings of the beautiful and historic Grade 1 Listed Oriel Chambers is the Commercial District’s very own MgMaStudios; a creative architecture and design agency. As one half of the architects behind the firm, we caught up with Mathew Giles to find out more about the creative architecture practice: “We deliver client-focussed, design-led solutions for the commercial, residential and cultural sectors in both the North West and beyond. Our clients can expect to benefit from our expertise in the architecture of the home, encompassing full design and project management of a new build and refurbishment works. For commercial projects, we can deliver services tailored to a client’s project; from space planning to new build premises, assisting brand development or even obtaining statutory approvals. Initially, we chose the Commercial District for the affordable, ambitious architecture. However, what we love is being able to see the street outside and enjoy the sunset from the comfort of our own office. Our office was designed by Liverpool architect, Peter Ellis in 1864 and is located on Water Street; right on the descent to the riverfront. We’re nestled amidst the grand relics of Herbert Rowse and the city’s Commercial District – it’s the perfect place for us. Critical mass is essential for a sustainable centre of commerce and the BID is a vehicle for engaged businesses to demonstrate the breadth of the city’s offer to inward investors, and also to form productive relationships with each other. The BID is a civic endeavour, and we should be supportive of improvements to the public realm, and campaigns which highlight the commercial potential of the city.” Name: Gaëlle Scohier Business: Keepoint Ltd Sector: Virtual Assistants & Virtual Offices

“We’re also busy plotting away and should hopefully have something exciting to announce shortly so watch this space!” Image from BID photoshoot – Gaelle Scohier Name: Bryan Adams Business: Ph.Creative Internet Marketing Consultancy Sector: Media, Digital and Creative

Tucked away on Queen Avenue is Ph.Creative an Internet marketing consultancy which was founded in 2004. The business develops bespoke inbound marketing campaigns and offers a range of specialist services including Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), Conversion Rate Optimisation (CRO), website design and smartphone app development. We meet with Managing Director Bryan Adams to see what makes Ph. Creative stand out from the crowd. “If I had to isolate one thing that makes us distinctive it would be my team. I have a passionate and creative team of 50 with expertise across a wide variety of sectors, including legal, finance, recruitment, retail and e-commerce. Ph.Creative is one of a very small number of inbound marketing agencies in the North. Locating Ph.Creative in the BID has allowed us to be nearer some of our customers, close to targeted prospects and other important city stakeholders. As well as being in a prime central location, which reflects the professional image of our business, we found an office space that we fell in love with and which suited our needs perfectly. Bruntwood has been a fantastic partner, both in helping us to shape our perfect office and supporting us during our past two years here. Being a member of the BID provides us with an extra layer of service that’s very welcome and valued by our whole team. We benefit a great deal from the additional networking opportunities and it’s a great feeling to be part of such a vibrant, thriving business community” The future looks bright for Bryan and his team as they look forward

You may be forgiven for thinking that Keepoint Ltd is just another virtual office service. However, Keepoint is not just a business address; they also offer full back office support to companies of all sizes from sole traders to larger SMEs. Office Manager, Gaëlle Scohier believes that the organisation goes that extra mile for their clients by offering the full package. “We have a team of Virtual Assistants with a wide variety of skills which allow us to support a very diverse range of clients with almost any task. The devil is in the detail and we really do cover every inch to make sure we get it right, everytime. Our services include Social Media management, PA support and ‘business in a box’ which offers various packages including brand design, print management and website hosting.”

“We are planning to grow our team to service a raft of new account wins and we have plans to further extend our offer to clients with the addition of an bigger app development and design team in the near future. Following the success of last year’s event, we’re also proud to be launching the second Inbound Marketing UK (IMUK) conference, which will take place on 8th July as one of the premier events of the International Festival of Business (IFB). All in all, 2014 is shaping up to be a pivotal year for Ph.Creative as some truly exciting, long-term plans unfold.”

PRESS GANG

Where would we be without the news? Commercial District BID is proud to be surrounded by the people who give it to us monthly, weekly and even daily. We’re talking about the journalists and the editors of this city; the professionals who won’t rest until they’ve delivered the hard-hitting, the funny, the thought-provoking and the essential news that keeps this and many other cities running. This time they’re on the other side of the desk as it’s THIS interviewing them…meet the Press Gang.

Jade Wright, Showbiz Writer at Liverpool ECHO and Sunday ECHO

“Exclusivity is important – if everyone has the story it becomes less interesting to us. More than anything try to focus your story around people. It’s one thing talking about a new business initiative, but it becomes much more exciting when you can talk about jobs being created or the people in the community that might be helped by it.” Putting people at the heart of a community she loves; that’s journalism we can really sink our teeth into.

“I’ve been made cups of tea by Dolly Parton, Mel C and Pete Postlethwaite” starts Jade. “I’ve interviewed prime ministers and pop stars but the biggest honour is always being invited into people’s homes to write their stories.” You probably recognise Jade peering up at you from the Showbiz pages in the Liverpool Echo; but she’s also turned her hand to food, drink, music – and much more in between. Acting as the commentator for a city as forthright as Liverpool can’t be an easy job but Jade takes it in her stride – she’s certainly got the experience to prepare herself for it: “I’m fortunate to work with a great team of people. When I joined the ECHO in 2005 I was inspired by the journalists around me – writers like Dawn Collinson, Susan Lee, Paddy Shennan and Janet Tansley. Now almost 10 years on I’m still learning from them every day. We are all motivated by our readers. Nothing is more exciting than putting together a great ECHO story I think readers will love. They keep me going when things get tough – I get letters most days from them.” For scousers across the city, the Liverpool ECHO has earned its right as a household commodity for its editorial prowess, real life stories and, of course, its dedication to campaigning; Jade says: “Everywhere I look, the ECHO has a proud tradition of investigative and campaigning journalism. There can be few streets or businesses we haven’t covered over the years. The paper is woven into the history of the city. We have been part of the community we write about for more than a century, and I am immensely proud to have been a part of that.” Although the ECHO has provided us with over a century of news, its content has changed to meet the wants and needs of our city and its people. Jade explains: “Liverpool is Britain’s most vibrant city. It changes by the day and I never tire of its people and its character. The Commercial District houses some of its most creative businesses and it’s a pleasure to work here. I’m hoping to see the ECHO go from strength to strength with them. We’ve recently launched the Sunday ECHO which has been a really positive step so I’m looking forward to seeing how that grows over time.” So as a seasoned expert in her field, what advice can Jade offer to BID members to get their business in the press?

18

Rebecca Keegan, Editor of Seen Magazine “My career has been so fast moving it’s hard to stop and find a highlight!” begins Rebecca. Securing her first front page headline at the tender age of 19 and with a brand new publication in the pipeline, there really is no stopping Editor of Seen Magazine, Rebecca Keegan. She continues: “I can’t understand why someone wouldn’t choose Liverpool to run a business from. The city has everything from creative to commercial personalities and there’s always something new to report on or write about. It makes my job very easy indeed.” Rebecca launched Seen Magazine back in 2010 and was initially greeted by uncertainty: “When it was first spoken about that a gay magazine was launching in the city, people were sceptical. Many of these people are now regular readers and give very positive feedback to the publication and what it stands for. Seen has contributed to Liverpool in massive way over the past 3 years; working with the likes of Liverpool Pride, Homotopia and the Vogue Ball. Through our active and vocal support of them; we have really begun to pave the way in breaking down social barriers.” She continues: “Through Seen Liverpool, I’ve had the pleasure of working with so many organisations which make a positive contribution to the city. I take a lot of emails and calls from people who are struggling with their sexuality or situations that arise due to their sexuality. I work closely with local charities and support groups to refer people to speak to them. It’s heart-warming that people see Seen as a point of contact if they need help. This, along with the work we did to help the Stanley Street Quarter secure rainbows on the signs in the area, are the main positive influences we’ve had in Liverpool. That, and bringing out a great magazine!”

So in making a social change and supporting the LGBT cause, how does Rebecca hunt out her stories? “I talk to people. Seen isn’t about what my opinions are, it’s about what’s going on with people from Liverpool’s LGBT community. Whether that be a business story or a personal accomplishment, it’s important for me to keep in touch with readers of the magazine. A good editor writes well, but a great editor listens well too.” “The Commercial District in this city is so unique. As with the surrounding districts, the commercial area is close-knit. People are keen to assist each other by connecting each other – this is a key ingredient for any growing business. It’s the Liverpool way, and being surrounded by friendly, accomplished business people with so many skills is great for any business owner. I will be launching a new publication in 2014 which I’ve been planning for twelve months. It’s a really exciting project and very close to my heart, I can’t wait to show it off.” And we can’t wait to see it; keep your eyes peeled for what Rebecca has in store…

Tony McDonough, Business Journalist at Liverpool ECHO “There are those who would prefer we offer a more rosetinted perspective” starts Tony, “But I am proud of the fact that we resist that and simply tell the truth.” With 22 years of experience as a journalist, working across print, online and broadcast media; we think it’s fair to say that Tony McDonough, Business Journalist at Liverpool ECHO, has earned his right to tell the truth. “I have been electrocuted and I have been shot in the head (I even tweeted from the ambulance) and I sometimes wonder what will come next - a falling piano, perhaps?” After initially training as an electrician after leaving school, Tony defeated the graduate-dominated profession without a degree and now sits as a recognisable face in the Liverpool ECHO business pages. The role that Tony holds in the Liverpool journalist scene is one he doesn’t take lightly; his position in running the successful Liverpool Daily Post’s ‘Fight for a Flight’ campaign did a lot to secure his UK Press Gazette Business & Financial Journalist of the Year Award in 2004. So after all this time, where does Tony look for inspiration? “When I speak to people around the business district I see a genuine appetite for up-to-date business news. People miss the business content of the Liverpool Post and our aim is to convince them that quality content lives on in the expanded business pages of the ECHO.” Tony continues: “It is a very dynamic process. We do a certain amount of advanced planning and are constantly ready to react to sudden and changing events. The value of a story is relative. What might make today may not make tomorrow.” Sitting as somewhat a of a pinnacle in the Commercial District area, the ECHO building provides the perfect lookout point for incentive. “For a business journalist, the area provides a fascinating insight into what works and what doesn’t in terms of regeneration. New offices have been built with the help of state funding. Some believe that has been its saviour while others see it as inappropriate interference and a distortion of the market. From this, we offer real news published without fear or favour, not self-indulgent polemic or cosy consensus.” So what tips would this experienced journalist give to a small business wanting to get published?

“Don’t waffle or tease! Get to the point right at the top. Most importantly, before you send or call; ask yourself ‘would I really want to read this?’ Every day, we offer our readers a snapshot of the world around them.” An honest, straight to the point journalist – just keep him away from musical instruments and tall buildings…

Alistair Houghton, Story Editor at Sunday ECHO “I’ve written lots of great stories, on subjects from child slavery in the cotton industry to the end of Royal Liver” starts Alistair. “And, just as importantly, I’ve been able to meet lots of interesting and inspirational people on the way.” Alistair Houghton has recently been appointed as Story Editor at Sunday ECHO; the new sister newspaper to Liverpool ECHO. “It’s brilliant to be involved with the launch of a new newspaper, a rare event in these tough times for the Media but a sign that Liverpool is a city with lots of stories and a great demand for news.” Alistair continues: “The Sunday ECHO has started very strongly and now I want to see it go from strength to strength. We want to keep getting the big scoops and fighting for our readers, while having a lot of fun on the way.” With the spotlight well and truly turned to the new Sunday ECHO, it is integral to recognise which stories have the substance to make it into the paper. Alistair explains: “The Sunday ECHO wants punchy and exciting stories that will grab people’s attention. So at our weekly Sunday ECHO conference, where senior staff gather to debate the paper, we’re always looking for the stories that make everyone say ‘wow’. Our recent page one exposé into students working as vice girls was a case in point!” So where does the Commercial District sit within this new Sunday ECHO? Alistair shares his diagnosis: “In terms of news stories, as the name suggests, we want stories – tell us about new things you’re doing, how well you’re doing, great changes you’ve made on the way. As business reporter for six-and-a-bit years, I told the stories of many of the people making the BID area what it is.” However, storytelling is only the cusp of what the Liverpool ECHO has contributed to our city “We cover all life in the city; good and bad, so not everyone loves us. But all of us who work here are proud of the paper and the way we give a voice to the city. Just look at our campaigning on Hillsborough over so many years. As the judges at last year’s Regional Press Awards said, our work ‘was an excellent example of a newspaper standing by its community against politicians and the police.’ Standing by a community isn’t difficult in a city like Liverpool. “It’s great to be a journalist in such a “newsy” city and region – there’s always something interesting happening here. In the business world, I’ve met dozens of inspiring entrepreneurs and company leaders and now at the Sunday ECHO I get even more of a chance to discover even more about this great city. Alistair continues: As Scouser Dr Johnson might say, if a man is tired of wandering down to the Mersey and looking at the Liverpool skyline, he is tired of life.” And with that, we concur.

The First National Wine Bar, 2-8 James St, Liverpool

Ye Hole in Ye Wall, 4 Hackins Hey, Liverpool

There’s no doubting that most pubs in the BID look like pubs. The weary punter is greeted with the warming and familiar façade of fine oak or mahogany framing, coloured windows and a door that is hefty as it is welcoming. The First National has none of these things.

From the striking to the most senior! We’ve been itching to get this place on the Bidwiser list since we began planning last year. We touch upon Liverpool’s commercial, industrial and maritime heyday with the First National, but now we take to when it all began.

The First National, from an architectural perspective, is a masonry monolith of malted liquors, wines and spirits. It is a venue that gives you a real sense of security purely from its physical and imposing facia. And so it should. After all, this was the HQ of the First National Bank during a time when those who held a bank account were those that also held a title.

We’ve all got a friend like Ye Hole – one who’s a little bit older, a little bit quieter and one that knows shed loads more than you do. Ye Hole is Liverpool’s oldest pub, dating to the start of Liverpool’s maritime dominance in 1726. The heritage of this quiet space off Dale Street is immeasurable, but thankfully, it is something it wears on its sleeve. It is a place that celebrates what our city is because it has seen it all before. It gives you a sense that the conversation you’re about to have with members of your team, in reality, is no different a conversation a merchant, mariner, or banker will have had with theirs back when Liverpool was a merchant trading powerhouse.

As you’d imagine from Liverpool’s commercial and economic dominance during the industrial revolution, banks were all about making themselves look and feel impregnable on the outside, and luxurious, successful and domineering on the inside. Thankfully, the First National in its custodial form has lost none of that. Marble columns reach beyond your periphery into a vast overhead cavern of fresh air. The décor, whilst some may say has seen better days, is full of character and charm. As we collected our drinks from the friendly chatty barmaid, we sat down in a booth that could easily double as a part time board room. The space, comfort and range of refreshments on offer were superb and an hour had passed before we had begun to discuss the points on the agenda set for this month’s guide.

Needless to say, we love Ye Hole. The aforementioned old fashioned joinery and panelling is in abundance which gives the place a character that has only improved with age. It’s got the obligatory wood fire and sleepy dog that you’d find in a country retreat. Best of all, it has a selection of real ales that would force a second envious glance from one of Ye Hole’s larger competitors. The food is fantastic, the service is nothing but friendly, so the boxes are all ticked for what a good pub should have.

So why is the First National a good place to plan? Well, because of the sheer openness of the place, you have space to think. People are forever saying they need ‘head space’ and the First National has this in abundance. Couple this with some well-kept lines that’ll serve great tasting, erm, inspiration, the creative juices will be certainly flowing.

But what makes it a place to do business and plan your next stage of development/world domination? It comes down to the centuries old layout of the place. To ensure the creativity flows, you need comfort (check), nourishment – liquid and otherwise - (check) and you also need privacy. We’re sorry to harp on about the carpentry again, but there are some very well placed wooden partitions that enclose you and give you (and those around you) the opportunity to speak freely.

Spring has sprung and what a time of year it is. The time of year where hazy days and long nights muster an instinctive call to our outdoor summer feeding grounds (the beer garden, obviously) is soon upon us. For this edition, we’ve once again tried, tested and immersed ourselves in four of what the BID has to offer. Our aim? To find those quieter hidden gems in the BID that are perfect for sitting down and talking things through. After all, it was the great Leo Tolstoy that said ‘Spring is the time of plans and projects’ and where better can you think of to plan those projects than at one of these fine hostelries.

Cross Keys, 13 Earle St, Liverpool

The Railway, 18 Tithebarn St, Liverpool

The Cross Keys is one of those places that is easy to get to, provided you’ve been there before. It’s a number of left and right turns, not far from the Passport Office, but the fact that you’ve all got Google Maps in your pocket, you’ll not be hard pressed to find it.

We pulled into the Railway; a place where the wonderful marriage of food and ale come together to give a true taste of what eating (and drinking) in the BID has to offer.

When you do find it you’ll be glad you decided to share in an adventure (you and your colleagues we mean). It is a place that is vibrant as it is comfortable. It has gone under somewhat of a renovation which has had a dramatic effect on the atmosphere. One of our associates remembers the Cross Keys from when it was a hangout for both hippies and hardened rockers before heading into town. Nowadays, it is more likely to be frequented by a hotel manager or human resources officer after a long day at the office but nevertheless, it is a place that will still welcome all that come. On our tour of the BID pubs for this edition, it was here we began to get peckish. Now we weren’t in the mood for anything heavy or substantial, just something to take the edge off those irritating grumbles. As we scanned the pumps selecting our choice of drink, were words that could have been sung by larks, backed by a quintet of cherubs: ‘hand raised pork pies’. Combined with a pint from what tasted like a very well looked after line, we sat down to contemplate why The Cross Keys could serve as a place of ‘plans and projects’.

Alas, having scoffed a pork pie the size of our faces, both of us were gastronomically satisfied - and how we wished we’d skipped lunch! The food menu was what you’d expect from somewhere selling itself as a gastro pub (even though the Railway isn’t selling itself as a gastro pub). The usual buzz words were noted i.e. fresh, local and seasonal, but considering the entire place was packed at 9pm on a Wednesday night, they’re certainly doing something that those in the know, knew well. We sat back into two very fine and very comfortable winged backs in a quiet corner observing the bar in all its grandeur. As you’d expect from a public house in the BID, it’s very traditional and looks the part. There was a great selection of ales and, a fine array of spirits and wines to choose from; selected, we assume, to match the menu.

The answer was simple really. It’s comfortable. The chairs were easy to sit in, the ale was really good and the ambiance was very relaxed. Whilst the others would have given you room to do some blue skies thinking or the privacy to get right to the crux of an issue, this place gives you an environment to switch off, tune in and contemplate things from a different angle.

Which leads us nicely to why the Railway fits the bill for ‘business use’. Reading this, you might work in a job that is considered to be a 9-5, correct? WRONG! We take clients out for dinner, we go for teams briefings after hours and will often go for a bite having been working late, and this is where the Railway is a place to give some serious consideration as place to go. The food is spectacular (we went back a week later for their Sunday lunch which could have a whole section dedicated to it – it was sublime). The service is impeccable. The bar selection is superb. The atmosphere is what you want for a midweek outing and a place where you can relax and discuss whatever it is you need to. What’s more, given the quality of the food, your team will enjoy going and your clients will think you’re spoiling them.

Darren had a pint of Trooper Ed had a pint of pint of Reverend James.

Darren had a pint of Deucher’s IPA. Ed had a pint of Deuchers’s IPA.

Little Italy comes to Old Hall Street Standing proudly on the corner of Old Hall Street is Trattoria 51; the second instalment of the widely successful Southport restaurant. One rainy January lunchtime, we went along and took the Italian taste test - we weren’t disappointed. Welcoming us out of the rain and into the lavish, warm interior was Toni Karemanaj, Manager and Italian food expert. We were promptly seated close to the main windows overlooking the Commercial District’s lunchtime rush – the best seat in the house. As we scanned our eyes over the food and wine menus, our stomachs were growling so the complimentary warm artisan breads and olives arrived just in time. As with any good host, Toni was quick to recommend his favourite wine of the moment; the Primitivo, a full bodied and spicy red – the perfect way to start off our Italian adventure. As Toni skilfully (and generously) filled our glasses, he began to explain the story of Trattoria 51;

risotto, spicy sausages, mozzarella and tomato sauce. After registering our orders with the kitchen, Toni returns once more as we quiz him about what he has planned for 2014. “Where to start?! First off, we’re looking to maintain the excellent quality of the restaurant. Standards are very important to us and we pride ourselves, not only on the quality of our food, but also our team. This year we’re also looking to showcase the extent of our skills through things like cocktail nights, Sardinia-themed nights, live music and also our now famous glutenfree evening. We’re proud to be the first restaurant in the North West to be trained and specialise in gluten-free food with the help of DS Gluten Free. Watch this space!” Our starters arrive promptly; my thick slices of creamy mozzarella enhances the saltiness of the delicately sliced Parma ham and the peppery bed of rocket. My partner’s stuffed peppers look hearty and filling and he comments how well the sweetness of the pepper pairs with the tanginess of the tomato. So far, we’re very impressed.

As Toni talks, the restaurant is already filling up for the lunchtime service – even for a Thursday afternoon this place is busy -always a good sign.

For my main course, I couldn’t help but order the Spaghetti Carbonara (£7.95), while my partner plumped for the Porchetta (£11.95), slow roast suckling pig, served with mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables. As the lunchtime shift was starting to pick up, the smells from the kitchen began to waft over to us igniting our hunger once more. As with our starters, our main courses arrived efficiently - both presented exquisitely.

After much deliberation, we order our food. I went for the Parma Ham and Mozzarella (£5.95) to start, while my partner opted for the Peperone Ripieno (£5.50), baked sweet pepper filled with

My ribbons of pasta were cooked to perfection, laced beautifully with a sumptuous creamy sauce and succulent pieces of pancetta. Too busy tucking into my own meal, I failed to pay any

attention to my partner’s plate – now half empty. Just as I was developing a case of meal envy, my generous partner invited me to sample – I didn’t refuse. The pork was incredibly tender and the apple sauce offset the creamy mash perfectly. The seasonal vegetables were cooked with a crunch and decorated with a drop of olive oil, giving a lovely colour to the plate. Both plates finished with gusto, my partner and I began reflecting over our meal and the overall ambience of the place. The clientele seemed to range from young professionals in suits to couples popping in for a quick bite – a fair demographic based on our surrounding. Toni arrived back at our table to tempt us with a dessert.. While my partner had secured the Tiramisu, I decided to go with the warm homemade chocolate brownie, served with ice cream. My brownie arrived warmed with a rich, chocolatey base, topped with nuts and a touch of sugar – the perfect salty sweet finisher. However, my partner had picked the winner; with the perfect Tiramisu served in a glass, each layer more decadent than the last. The rich coffee-syrupy base was balanced with a smooth crème top layer and sprinkled with a dusting of chocolate powder. Although we could have stayed another hour, the office beckoned us back. We left with the satisfaction of a fabulous meal and the promise of an exciting 2014 and beyond for the authentic Trattoria 51. Ciao bella!

partner chose the 8 oz Sirloin with Hand Cut Chips (À la Carte menu, £23.95). The parmesan melted on the risotto as I lifted it from the plate and the plump mushrooms were the perfect earthy taste. My partner couldn’t hide his delight at the feast in front of him; the sirloin cooked with a lovely pink centre and the chips cooked properly with the skins kept on. Meal envy was setting in.

With four of the world’s most famous Liverpudlians standing atop its window ledges, Blakes has a lot to live up to. THIS investigated the counterpart of Hard Days Night Hotel; the restaurant we’d been looking forward to try out. We arrived at Blakes just as the restaurant opened for the evening service and were greeted by our friendly host, Wilhelmina. After taking our wine orders (we chose the Shiraz under her approval), Wilhelmina advised on which dishes she recommended. We chose from the All You Need is Blakes menu (2 courses for £11.95, 3 courses for £14.95) and I went for the Chargilled Squid with Red Pepper Pesto - my partner chose the Chicken Liver Parfait and Apple Chutney to start.

The starters arrived in no time and the presentation was truly gorgeous. As my squid was placed in front of me, I could smell the chargrill aroma and couldn’t wait to tuck in. As I did, I wasn’t disappointed; the squid, being notoriously difficult to get right, was cooked to perfection – and the subtle spice of the red pesto was just right. I couldn’t resist trying my partner’s parfait; the smooth creamy texture was a decadent bite and the tang of the chutney was a treat for the taste buds. When we finished our starters, they were removed with minimum fuss and, as with our starters, our mains arrived in a timely manner. On such a cold evening in February I opted for a heartwarming Mushroom Risotto, while my

60 SECONDS WITH

Tell us a little bit about your role: I am the Genral Manager of the Raddisson Blu on Old Hall Street. The role is very diverse so it never gets boring. I start between 7am and 8am every day and depending on the business levels in the hotel, don’t often finish until late at night. There is a healthy balance between spending time front of house with guests and employees and back of house in my office. We are a people-focused business, therefore it is very important to me to have that face-to-face contact with guests, clients and staff so this is one of the first things I do when I come in. I never describe my day to day job as “just” work. It is a way of life -it is 24/7 and I love it! How long have you been part of the BID? I have been in Liverpool since June 2011, so when the Commercial District became a BID I saw the potential immediately and was able to make the most of the opportunity. It was ultimately Paul Rice who introduced me to the BID and I was lucky enough to experience some of that enthusiasm he brought into his role and the BID. What do you think has been the biggest change in your business since the start of the BID? It is hard to say because I have not experienced the years pre-BID. I do believe that being part of the BID will benefit us in the coming years. The area looks clean and certainly is safe. Our guests always comment on the great location of the hotel and the area that it is in.

The huge portions were an absolute delight but we couldn’t shy away from the selection of desserts. I chose the Vanilla Cheesecake, while my partner selected a traditional Apple Sponge and Custard. My cheesecake was light, airy and sweet with a crunchy digestive base. I managed to swoop in just in time before my partner finished his dessert; a delectable sponge with a good traditional custard. We left with full tummies and a great night under our belts. All you need is love after all - oh, and a perfectly cooked sirloin. 41 North John St Liverpool Merseyside L2 6RR 0151 236 1964 www.harddaysnighthotel.com

Hans Konings What benefits do you gain from being in the BID? It is an area that is well looked after and since the improvement of the marketing activities last year it really is an area now with its own identity What’s your favourite part of the BID? I really enjoy the walk down Old Hall Street through the gates of Exchange Flags around the Town Hall and into Castle Street. Exchange Flags is a great space and has so much potential to become the social hub of the Commercial District. What it needs is more bars and restaurants with areas to eat and drink outside on the square. What inspires you? What is a real motivator within our business is to see the successful delivery of events, large groups and the individual everyday overnight stays. The preparation and detailed planning that goes into our work and then to get the positive feedback from your guests and clients is what keeps you going. The development of employees, retaining talent and attracting new talent are a real focus point for us so a lot of time is going into that as well.
