Intervention to cool stagflation With the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) at 15.08 per cent, a nine-year record high and a double-digit rate for the past 13 months, inflation is being deemed as “stagflation” by critics. In the wake of growing discontent with the high inflation rate, the muchawaited government intervention has come the industry’s way. Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman started off with the reduction of excise duty on petrol and diesel resulting in a substantial reduction in retail prices. The cut from the centre was followed by reciprocative measures from state governments like Maharashtra and
Rajasthan which announced a VAT reduction. Announcing a revenue implication of Rupees One lakh crore for the Centre, the FM went on to reduce customs duty on raw materials and intermediaries of plastic products where import dependence is deemed high. The Government announced Sitharaman is also calibrating customs duty on raw materials and intermediaries for iron and steel while opting for a reduction in import duty on some raw materials of steel. It will also levy export duty on select steel products to prioritise domestic distribution.
Crisil: Production volumes of tyre manufacturers to halve The production volumes at tyre manufacturing companies could halve to six to eight per cent this fiscal. Estimated to settle at 2.5 million tonnes, compared with 12-14 per cent last fiscal, the lower demand could be driven by the replacement, commercial vehicles and passenger vehicles segments besides demand from export markets. The moderation is expected to be a factor in the growth last fiscal benefitting disproportionately from the low-base effect of the preceding two fiscal. Back then, it is known, that volumes had contracted due to an economic slowdown induced by the covid-19 pandemic. Operating margins should rise to 12 per cent this fiscal, up 200 basis points (bps) from last fiscal’s decades low of 10 per cent as price hikes ease the pressure from high input costs. The credit profiles of tyre makers are expected to remain stable which is a good news for stakeholders. Better cash accruals should help fund higher Capital Expenditure (CapEx) and keep debt metric healthy, as per the Crisil analysis of India’s top six tyre manufacturers, accounting for 80 per cent of the Rs.75,000 crore revenue of the sector. The sector derives 60 per cent of its volume from the replacement market, and 27 per cent from OEMs with export volumes making up the rest.

In her address, she appreciated the CCI for taking timely initiatives during the peak of the pandemic to ensure continuity of regulatory work. The CCI stood the test of time and the expectations of stakeholders, she said. “In order to speed up recovery, companies need to scale up. Scaling up is already happening, and CCI should have a proactive understanding of what is shaping markets in this process, especially in M&As,” she opined. Citing the threat of cartelisation hovering over the infrastructure growth planned for the country, she underlined the threat of rising input costs. Referring to the adverse impact on supply chains, she called upon CII to understand the technical nuances of digitalisation and understand whether they were being used fairly, effectively and transparently. Ashok Kumar Gupta, Chairperson, CCI highlighted that CCI has been constantly upgrading its investigation toolkits and techniques to unravel anti-competitive conduct, which is often shrouded in secrecy. The CCI General Regulations, 2009, were recently amended after a rigorous consultation process, with an objective to establish a robust information-sharing regime through the setting up of a confidentiality ring that allows parties to effectively present their cases without compromising the sanctity of commercially sensitive information.

Gone Too Soon We are deeply saddened by the sudden loss of our colleague, Zal Cursetji
A
man of many talents and one of the most genuine people to have graced our company, Zal was very energetic, always had a smile on his face, and constantly lifted the spirits of those around him. His humour would find a way to cheer everyone up in just about any situation. It’s now been years that I have known Zal and there never was a dull moment with him around. He might be 39, but had the spirit of a teenager. To me, he was more than a colleague. He was a big brother who always looked out for me and went out of his way to keep me safe on our many adventures together. Zal vouched for me when I applied and, because of him, I was able to showcase my talents at Bike India magazine and believe in myself again. For that, I will forever be in his debt. He always motivated me to do better and helped me see my potential. I have learned so much from him and I will always keep those teachings in mind. I am thoroughly going to miss those rides with him and exploring places while he would enthusiastically tell me stories about his past. Whenever he introduced me to new bikers, he would start off by praising me, followed by making fun of all of the immature things I have done. I will never forget his unique personality and the many occasions we had just having a good laugh. His legacy will surely live on in all of the people’s lives he touched. Even though it’s still hard to believe what has happened, I know that you are in a better place now. Rest and ride in peace. You will always have a special place in our hearts. — Azaman Chothia
Surely the life of any party and a bubbly soul altogether. So talented with song, guitar, bike, and fluffing things up to immense proportions. eat dissipation is crucial to the efficiency of an Internal Combustion Engine (ICE). Especially since temperatures are known to breach the ~2300-2500 degrees Centigrade mark. Here, the role of air fins is crucial. The fin as an extended surface is used to direct the heat away from the engine back into the atmosphere. Failing which, in an uncontrolled environment, one risks burning the oil film between the moving parts. It may result in seizing the engine forcing the vehicle to enter the limp mode. With efficient cooling, the temperature can be brought down by up to 150-200 degrees Centigrade. Forming an essential component of air-cooled systems, fins can be spotted easily in two-wheelers in close proximity to the engine heads and the engine blocks. According to a Lap Lambert Academic Publishing, a paper authored by Sathishkumar Kuppuraj of Elgi Equipment Ltd. from the technology department writes on the engine high temperature and how its subjected to high-degree, thermal stress. He cites fins as the only component used to dissipate the engine heat. “Fins are generally used to increase the heat transfer rate from the system to the surroundings,” he explains. In his study, he further cites how computational flow analysis, on the engine cooling fins helps determine the heat dissipation rate and the principle implemented to increase the heat transfer rate. In a noteworthy modification carried out, fins were modified using different notch types and made up of the same material. Kuppuraj stresses on the need for knowing the efficiency and effectiveness beforehand to be able to ensure a proper design. The analysis was conducted using the ANSYS - CFD Fluent software, in this case (read the detailed cover story on ANSYS with an exclusive upfront interaction in our upcoming issue to learn more about the advancements in simulation). The study is known to have made use of fins with holes, fins with a V-shaped notch and fins with a rectangular notch. In another interesting case study, experts have argued over the architecture of single-cylinder engines being more efficient than multi- cylinder engines. In the case of the former, for instance, the airflow is directed all around the sides of the cylinder, making cooling far more effective. The drawback is, that most single-cylinder engines are petrol engines and do not fit the requirements of diesel, heavy-duty vehicles. Especially since diesel has a newfound identity as “clean diesel”. These are however extended to three-wheeler duty cycles. The amount of heat dissipation, however, depends on two crucial factors: the amount of airflow through the fins and the fin surface area. Fins are known to have a high thermal conductivity. It is this conductivity that allows it to conduct the excess heat through the fin wall. It provides the added capability of an increase in the convective and radiative heat exchange. The cool air is forced through the fins by the fans, and in air planes and automotive, this is determined and often made possible by the speed of the vehicle. Be it on the radiator, WWW.AUTOCOMPONENTSINDIA.COM

Annular fins are frequently used in liquid-gas heat exchanger systems to increase the heat transfer rate. It is noteworthy that an increase in the per centage of wetness on the fin area has an inverse correlation to the fin efficiency given that the temperature gradient increases.
Fins are not restricted to ICE only. These are also used in industrial engines and motors. In the case of Electric Vehicles (EVs) two-wheelers, these can be found on the motors. For instance, Ather uses a 6 kW permanent magnet synchronous motor designed to deliver 26 Nm of torque. To ensure heat is dissipated, the two-wheeler deploys annular fins. Simply put, when cast or bolted to the flywheel, it acts as a fan blade for enhanced air circulation. Indian suppliers like Delhi-based KBA Metal Products Pvt. section, annular fins, cylindrical fins and pin fins. The straight fins have an extended fin attached to a wall. The annular fin is attached circumferential to the cylinder head. The cross-section is known to vary from the centre line of the cylinder. It is further divided into rectangular and conical profiles. The pin fin is a crosssectional profile wherein the diameter is known to be smaller compared to its length. It may be of both uniform and nonuniform cross-sections. The material used for the pin plays a significant role here, and aluminium continues to be a choice with a growing interest owing to its chemistry. Low density and the ability to resist corrosion are the prime factors for its consideration. It also scores high on electrical and thermal conductivity. As a ductile metal, it has a low melting point and density. Notably, the study concludes with the consideration that fins with rectangular notches are far more efficient compared to V-shaped fins and fins without notches. We spotted a Royal Enfield Classic 500 fitted with rubber spacers on cylinder fins. As per riders, while it is a good sound damper, there are critics questioning the heat dissipation transfer, leaving scope for further evolution. ACI

vehicle is dependent on various lubricants to stay up and running. Coolants are crucial here! Here again, the breed of an antifreeze coolant is deemed quintessential for extreme temperatures to help the vehicle maintain an even, operational temperature. Like most fluids that need a vehicle to be drained and replaced at regular intervals, coolants are no different. The coolant levels need to be monitored periodically and checked at least twice a year—before the summer heat and before the winter cold. To address the need for optimising engine performance in such varied and extreme climatic conditions, Valvoline offers a range of Antifreeze, or engine coolants for different duty cycles. The Cummin JV partner made its presence felt at the recently concluded Excon 2k21. The most common variety of liquid antifreeze is an IAT coolant formula or Inorganic Additive Technology. ZEREX™ Original Green a type of IAT coolant is claimed to be a decade old, proven formula aimed at corrosion resistance. specifications for a wider acceptance. Contrary to green coloured base, the base of the latter is distinguished by its orange sheen. The good part is that the new generation coolants can also be used in older generation vehicles by using special additives available in the market. Solutions like the AlugardPlus® are widely available. In other products, Zerex™ G-05™ which is of HOAT (Hybrid OAT) type is a silicate coolant distinguished by a yellow sheen. The ZEREX™ G-48 Hybrid OAT (HOAT) is phosphate-free and turquoise in colour. ZEREX™ Asian Vehicle Phosphated HOAT (P-HOAT) type is available in either blue or pink base while the ZEREX™ G-40, another silicate variant HOAT (Si-OAT) has a purple hue. The company also recently introduced an advanced, Glycol-based full-antifreeze coolant claimed to generate a high cooling formulation that offers the twin advantage of an extra-long service life and a superior corrosion resistance. In general, an AntiFreeze coolant is a coloured liquid that is mixed with water usually at a 50/50 ratio to help synchronise engine. free environment when maintained at optimal levels. Some of the directly known use cases include keeping the radiator from freezing or overheating. With its expertise in this sphere, Valvoline offers a variety of coolants and caters to diverse markets like American, Asian and the European, from motorcycles to passenger vehicles, to the commercial vehicles (including solutions for agri and off-highway segments). Each can of coolant is formulated to keep its designated engine type optimally operational. While the company continues to develop different formulations to fill the white spaces, there is a strong speculation of acquisition looming large. Liquid Cooling To The Rescue
Battery Management Systems are increasingly finding a use case in liquid cooling. Ashish Bhatia looks at the grey areas of air-cooling, that suppliers have overcome.
@atashishbhatia
O
riginal Equipment Manufacturers are increasingly opting for liquid-cooled Battery Management Systems (BMS) in their Electric Vehicles (EVs). Drawing from the learnings gathered from liquid cooling in Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles, case-in-point, ICE vehicles using a gaseous liquid or a liquid coolant directed to the heat exchanger and further cooled by air. Prevalent in both cars and motorcycles, the liquid cooling component comprises the radiator fan and fan cowl, water pump and a thermostat as standard production equipment. The cooling system has found a use case in EV counterparts, including recently commercialised three-wheelers. With conventional cooling (air cooling) and the lack of standardisation found to make battery packs vulnerable to heat spikes, the case for liquid-cooling is stronger, perhaps more than ever before.
q Liquid cooling in ICE
In the case of ICE, water is circulated to dissipate heat from overheating parts like the cylinder head and blocks. A cooling flan cools the water as it passes through the radiator. According to AIS-137 2015 notification, for vehicles of the categories M and N,

liquid cooling circulation, in a testing environment, had to be operated by an engine water pump only. The liquid must be cooled either by the engine radiator or an external cooling circuit where the liquid comes in thermal contact with the engine component. It was bound to a condition that the pressure loss recorded in the circuit and the pump inlet pressure must match the engine cooling system. The radiator shutter was required to be in an open state all this while. The auxiliaries included the fan, and the thermostat, and were chosen based on the desired net engine power. For the L category of vehicles, the standard production equipment also took into consideration, the engine bonnet and the bonnet air outlet. When measuring the maximum engine torque and the power, the temperature of the coolant at the outlet of the engine was required to be maintained within +/- 5K of the upper thermostatically controlled temperature, in line with the manufacturer’s specifications.
q Liquid cooling in EVs
Drawing from the learnings of liquid cooling in ICE, battery-pack and BMS, suppliers have been able to roll out EV solutions. Just like an overheating engine, the EV heat is traced to the battery pack. Charging and discharging are known to generate heat inside the WWW.AUTOCOMPONENTSINDIA.COM
cells and the interconnection systems. Known to be directly proportional to the square of the current flow, multiplied by the internal cell resistance, and the interconnect systems, it’s the current flow that dictates the heat proportion. This has a direct bearing on the battery performance. The electrochemical system, charge acceptance, battery power output, safety and TCO all are at stake here. To prevent the battery pack from malfunctioning in sub-zero temperatures, sub-30 degrees and above 40-degrees with the threat of a thermal runaway, the role of BMS is crucial to keep it in an operational range. According to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), the temperature difference between cells must be limited to sub-three to sub-four degrees. In liquid-cooling systems, piped
cooling is one method. Found to be better at driving hot air away from the batteries in comparison to air-cooling, its flip side is the limited liquid coolantcarrying capacity. Liquid glycol has found acceptance by manufacturers like Tesla and GM. In this case, heat is transferred through a refrigeration cycle. The coolant has a more even distribution over the cells, as per studies conducted. AUTO COMPONENTS INDIA // JUNE 2022

It is the most industrialised state in the country and a
favourite destination for new investments, moving swiftly towards becoming a hub for electronics-related technological transformation. Micro market growth over the years and is on its way to achieving its vision of becoming a USD one trillion economy by FY 2030-31. The budget presented by Palanivel Thiaga Rajan, the Finance Minister of Tamil Nadu approaches critical needs to become future-ready and to make the environment conducive for new industries to proliferate. The TN 2022-23 budget was presented to strengthen the fiscal position of the state without increasing the tax burden of the taxpayers, increasing youth employability, attracting new investments, and data-driven governance. The reduction of the fiscal deficit from 4.33 per cent to 3.80 per cent is a great achievement of the State Government despite the pandemic situation and lockdowns during the last fiscal year. TN is an attractive destination for industrial investments and the supply chain
sector plays a crucial role in enabling the growth. The pandemic has affected the supply chain and hence stability in the entire value chain will take time. Robust supply chain infrastructure is a crucial element for growth in the manufacturing sector and it is important to improve the overall efficiency in the sector while trying to accelerate demand for logistics services. Additionally, the ongoing war in Ukraine can disrupt the global economic recovery. In such a scenario, the Government’s allocation of Rs.50,000 crore towards the
construction of industrial parks in Vellore and Coimbatore, and another allotment of Rs.32,667 crore to the industries department for the development of logistics and supply chain systems is a great step. An improved supply chain infrastructure will directly result in improving the ease of doing business, which will in turn make Tamil Nadu a lucrative market for manufacturing. With higher spending allocated for the infrastructure sector, this is significant considering that the government aims to boost employment opportunities and strengthen the economy of the State.

Micro market The Budget has also strongly focused on developing industries, encouraging MSMEs and Startups. Among MSMEs, the budget announced an allocation of Rs.50 crores for the development of 20 micro-clusters. An important aspect here is that the government is paying attention at the grass-root level or at the bottom of the pyramid to capitalise on traditionally available skills and provide impetus to developing them as an industry. It ensures economic growth and employment across the state. These are all smaller than the micro-units and they might not always require infrastructure for growth but rather address issues like their need for design inputs or visits to other clusters. The State Government is also proactively working in meeting the demand for skilled manpower. This is evident from the special fund of Rs.100 crores that will be created to build the necessary public infrastructure for export organisations in Tamil Nadu. This fund would be utilised to set up skill centres, testing centres, export warehouses, and inland container depots, with contributions from industries and industry associations. The agricultural sector has great potential to provide an essential contribution to employment opportunities and work quality. Sustainable and continued growth in the agricultural sector can act as a catalyst and make significant contributions to the fight against poverty and can lead to an increase in the household incomes of the people involved in the agricultural sector. Tractor components suppliers stand to benefit. The TN Budget rightly addresses this as the Tamil Nadu Agriculture Budget for 2022-23 emphasises the use of technology like IoT, drones, and remote sensing, besides envisaging a role for industries and other allied departments to ensure remunerative prices for farmers and enhancing employment opportunities in the farm sector.
32
AUTO COMPONENTS INDIA // JUNE 2022
It is also good to see that many of the recommendations of CII have been accepted by the Government which include an upgraded single window system for CMDA, increasing of FSI to encourage transit-oriented development and the adjoining areas of the outer ring road of Chennai, Startup centre at Nandambakkam, regional startup hubs at Madurai, Tirunelveli and Erode, increased funding for Chennai-Kanyakumari industrial corridor and the Rs.5750 crore, 20 km double-deck flyover from Chennai port connecting Maduravoyal, to reduce congestion, bring more logistical efficiency and to have a great connector for multi-modal logistics. In the coming years, we are expecting the Government to push for more investments in the Southern districts of Tamil Nadu which lack industries and infrastructure for the overall economic development of the region. Another aspect is focused on renewable energy generation whether it is wind power or solar power. TN already has a sweet spot in terms of the highest number of sunny days in a year and is also conducive to the generation of power harnessing wind. The government should encourage
further investments and make it easier for industries to switch to renewable energy sources as early as possible. I believe that future footprint decisions by global corporations will also take into account whether the investment destination provides a conducive atmosphere to have a low carbon footprint right from the beginning. Further, there must be a speedy implementation of the Chennai-Kanyakumari Industrial Corridor (CKIC). The Corridor is likely to generate over 4.7 million additional jobs, driven by an annual manufacturing output of USD 222 billion. Overall, the TN Budget is futuristic, inclusive, and propels economic growth. However, all these plans will only have a positive impact when there is proper execution. The Government and private sector will have to come together to develop sector-specific industry clusters with excellent and competitive infrastructure and an end-to-end ecosystem of value chains like suppliers and service providers. If there is no gap between the announcement and implementation, Tamil Nadu is going to witness a spur in economic growth. ACI

upfront
With multi-modal logistics parks coming up across the country, we will see a sharper differentiation between light-duty, medium-duty and heavy-duty trucks which at present is not at par with global benchmarks.
Where do you see the demand revival coming from? The market slowed down because of the slowing GDP growth, and that’s now coming back on its feet. This is leading to new demand and the movement of freight, and therefore demand for trucks. The second important aspect is, that in 2019 itself, the market had started to slow down. First due to the transition to BSVI, and then due to Covid-19. So it’s been three years which is a very long period of fleets not being replaced. Now, when GDP is relatively growing healthier, there is an increased demand for the movement of goods. All the fleet owners are coming back and buying new trucks. This is one major dimension which is rolling out in front of us. The second dimension, which we will see, going forward, and will impact the CV industry is the scrappage policy. The policy has been rolled out but as the infrastructure grows, this includes the scrappage centres and the testing centres, it will have a good impetus on the demand by way of fleet replacement. The third important dimension is regulations. After transition to Bharat Stage VI, we

are gearing up for the OBD II, safety regulations are lined up and these will also influence the industry going forward. The other standalone dimension is the infrastructure as a whole in itself. We have seen the government investing aggressively in infrastructure. Whether it’s the express highways or the multimodal logistics parks. These will have an impact in the medium- to long-term. People will prefer trucks which can do higher speeds which translates to higher horsepower for a better Turn Around Time (TAT), and lower Total Cost of Operations (TCO). It will mean that the entire product portfolio will shift in this direction. With multimodal logistics parks coming up across the country, we will see a sharper differentiation between light-duty, medium-duty and heavy-duty trucks which at present is not at par with global benchmarks. The next big impact as a ripple effect will be the logistics cost in India, estimated to be at 13-14 per cent of the GDP. This should settle somewhere in the region of eight to 10 per cent which would be at par with Germany, for example. These are some of the factors which are influencing how the industry as a whole is structured. How do you look at the defining trends like turning to a gas-based economy with a shift to CNG for example? There is an uptick in people adopting gas. We all know the reasons behind it. There is an increase in the price of diesel and there is parity with gas. So even if the product may not deliver the same horsepower or torque, people are ready to compromise to bring down their running costs. I believe India is charting its way to transition away from diesel or gasoline. It’s a mix of blended fuels, it’s a mix of gas whether it’s Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) or Liquefied Nitrogen Gas (LNG) and eventually, it will be electric as well as hydrogen. In the mid-term, I see India

taking these directions but over the long-term, I see many of these fuel options as transitory options. This means, eventually, in two or three decades, we will settle down with the final solution which could be a mix of electric and hydrogen. Tell us about the long-standing focus on driver ergonomics and occupant and pedestrian safety. How have plant safety standards evolved and how are these redefining the ecosystem? Safety is deeply ingrained in our value system. Whether it’s our manufacturing plant, our operations or our products we have always been the best on the bench and defined how the market moves. As one example which is a testimony, when we were entering this market just 10 years ago, we decided we will only have the factory-fitted, wellengineered steel cabins. I remember, at that time, the entire CV market had only a ~ 20 per cent penetration on the front. 80 per cent of the market constituted the cowl trucks which then go to a body-builder to be fitted with a wooden cabin. I think we both know, how unsafe that product is when it rolls out of the factory. It’s a half-built cabin. WWW.AUTOCOMPONENTSINDIA.COM
upfront markets and continue to solidify our position as well where exports are concerned. On the future technology front, we are working internally on fronts like Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) and preparing ourselves for what lies ahead. To sump, it will mean different fuel options, and also help our push to offer mobility as a solution rather than just a product itself.
I struggle with the fact that India is the only market now offering a Bharat Stage VI emission compliant product, at par with global benchmarks or a notch behind, but when it comes to safety, we have a lot of ground to cover. Even now, an estimated 40 per cent of the trucks sold in this market are cowl. It’s high time that the government should act on it. The entire society and the industry act on it and say we do not deliver what we consider unsafe even if it meets the regulations. We must go above and beyond. I believe, compliance is about doing things right but integrity is about doing the right thing. This has always been a firm belief and going forward we will continue to. You said it’s just been 10 years since you entered the Indian market. What have been the learnings of the decade gone by and what are the major focus areas for the next decade? There are a lot of learnings and no two ways about it. I believe, we have successfully delivered on our promise on many fronts. We began by promising that we will come out with products that are ahead of the market. They are more fuel-efficient, leaders in TCO, and they will set new safety benchmarks. We have delivered on each of these fronts. To give you an example, whenever I meet my customers, they tell me, that if a fleet owner has a BharatBenz and some other brands, the driver has a natural inclination to drive WWW.AUTOCOMPONENTSINDIA.COM
the former. They don’t want to drive another brand. Even while away on a vacation, they make sure that they get the BharatBenz key back on returning. That’s their way of expressing their love for the product. With this focus on technology leadership, we’ve also transformed the CV market in a lot of ways. We will continue to strive for this. It is ingrained in BharatBenz and we will never change course. So what will change? We also supply to 50 markets worldwide. Going forward, the focus will be to go deeper into these markets. So while we develop products for India, we will also continue to explore newer

How difficult is it to convince the Indian customer to look beyond acquisition costs to costs over an entire life cycle when selling mobility as a solution? It is the case with a lot of them but not everyone. When we entered the market, we came in with the Total Cost of Operation (TCO) logic. We use to sit across from the customer, understand their entire operation and calculate the cost, for instance, over five years. The idea is to explain, that if you buy a BharatBenz, with a slightly higher price than the competition, you will save a lot more in a very short period. This is attributed to better fuel efficiency, better TAT, and also higher safety. We have concluded that customers believe in this ideology. Customers today proactively ask for solutions to attain a better TCO. In one exercise, we looked at our entire customer portfolio and found that, on average, someone who buys a BharatBenz, for the first time, buys two trucks. The second time, the same customer buys eight trucks. The third time they buy 22 trucks on average. This tells you that the Indian customers are very cost-savvy but they also understand what gets delivered as a whole over the long term. You’ve repeatedly quoted the phrase, the more you sweat in peace the less you bleed in war. How does one translate it into business strategy? I very distinctly remember I was once on my way to the plant here at Oragadam. This was just after the first lock down. We all had apprehensions at AUTO COMPONENTS INDIA // JUNE 2022

upfront safety of our people. It was then that I read this Malaysian proverb, I found it to closely correlate with the situation faced. Peace is akin to markets being closed so there was less to sell and hence deemed a peaceful time. I decided we must not let our efforts down and we must continue with our mid-to-longterm strategy and not waver from it. It was the time to do more so that when the crisis is over you find yourselves better prepared. I am happy we could go through with it successfully over the past two years.
We also supply to 50 markets worldwide. Going forward, the focus will be to go deeper into these markets. So while we develop products for India, we will also continue to explore newer markets and continue to solidify our position as well where exports are concerned.
How do you see Tamil Nadu growing in stature beyond current levels to draw investment and find favour from the industry as a potential micro-market? I have a very strong belief and confidence on two fronts. As Covid19 subsides, India will emerge with the highest economic growth rate, globally. Within India, Tamil Nadu will be the number one state. We already rank second in terms of GDP after Maharashtra and with all the efforts of the government and the

entire industry is putting, Tamil Nadu will be a major attraction for multiple sectors of the economy as far as new investments are concerned. We’ve seen some of these announcements coming in; we’ve seen our honourable Chief Minister leading with participation and industry dialogues to understand their needs, and committing to them, the desired ecosystem to deliver. Trends In Mobility Anil Valsan, Director Knowledge Leader Advanced Manufacturing and Mobility Industry Market, Ernst & Young LLP, and Global Automotive & Transportation Lead Analyst spoke of trends in mobility and the impact on companies across the ecosystem. Ashish Bhatia draws attention to the insights shared.
T
he 13th Edition of Apollo CV Awards 2022 had a special guest. Anil Valsan, Director Knowledge Leader - Advanced Manufacturing and Mobility Industry Market, Ernst & Young LLP, and Global Automotive & Transportation Lead Analyst as the keynote speaker brought along with him an immense passion for data, analytic and knowledge management where he is known to constantly seek innovation, implement best-inclass practices and make change palatable. Currently leading a multicultural team of Analysts and Knowledge Managers spread across the US, Europe and Asia, serving clients and EY practitioners (a 40k+ community) in sectors as different as chalk and cheese but somewhere with a common connect - business. From aerospace and defence, industrial products, chemicals, automotive, transportation and Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS), over the last decades he has delivered thought-leading datadriven research, analysis and strategy projects for the professional services as well as advanced manufacturing and mobility sectors, globally. He set the tone of by sharing insights on the trends in mobility, and the impact on companies across the mobility ecosystem. He highlighted the two key themes that his address focused on. What’s trying to change across the mobility and transportation sectors and what does it mean for companies across the ecosystem? “We are living

Trending in unprecedented times, facing uncertainty on multiple fronts. We are still learning to live with the pandemic that has totally transformed our ways of living, working and consuming products and services,” he expressed. Drawing attention to the mobility sector still reeling from the economic costs and the horrors of the war in Ukraine, he pointed at globalisation as we have come to experience it in the last number of decades, stalling as a consequence of protectionist measures from developed as well as emerging countries. “Sustainability has become a top priority with pressures from consumers, governments investors and advocacy groups,” he averred. Citing governments the world over, announcing their commitments to a zero-emissions future either in law or draft legislation as also reaffirmed at the Conference Of Parties (COP26), he explained that these factors meant that while we are witnessing demand spikes from consumers around the world between covid-19 waves, it had also surprised and surpassed supply across many sectors. “Companies
WWW.AUTOCOMPONENTSINDIA.COM
across the value chain are struggling to ramp up fast enough to meet demand, a result of inflationary price pressures across the board, from energy to raw materials, a shortage of key components like semiconductors, and bottlenecks to logistics and transportation infrastructure to name just a few of the challenges,” he cited.
q Impact on mobility and transportation
Thinking as an optimist, Valsan urged stakeholders to set aside threats and instead focus on the significant opportunity it presents in the short and medium-term with a market projected to grow well over 10 per cent globally, in 2022 alone. “The significant gap between demand and supply has actually created room for a variety of products and services for instance changing consumer preferences and the demand for instant delivery is driving the growth of quick commerce or hyper local delivery platforms,” he opined. Adding that last-mile delivery has grown exponentially, and consumers and customers are willing to pay a premium fee for prompt and efficient deliveries, he explained the flip side as e-commerce volumes continue to grow. Product returns are also rising at a rapid pace, he pointed.
Drawing attention to the trend of significant growth in cross-border shipping as an outcome of better logistics, digital payment options make it easier and more secure. According to Forrester, cross product purchases will actually comprise 20 per cent of the worldwide e-commerce market in 2022 with sales of over USD 627 billion. “However, there is a significant capacity constraint all around from severe container shortages, port infrastructure bottlenecks, trucking capacity constraints, driver shortages to the unavailability of warehousing and storage capacities,” he mentioned.
We are also seeing a greater willingness of auto makers suppliers, logistics companies and governments to share more data to improve visibility across the supply chain.
AUTO COMPONENTS INDIA // JUNE 2022

Trending q Responding to the market dynamics
Valsan shifted focus to the ways companies across the transportation ecosystem are responding to these market dynamics. Admitting to leading companies adopting various strategies, he underlined the four broad themes emerging in his opinion. The first is about the focus on building enterprise resilience; the second is about accelerating digitalisation in products services and across the enterprise; the third is about catching up on sustainability and last but not the least, speeding up innovation on resilience in the short term. “We see OEMs working really hard to try and keep their plants running and securing their supply chains clearly, for instance, the war in Ukraine has meant that a number of manufacturers have had to suspend their sales and production operations in Russia. They’ve had to adapt their sourcing strategies and minimise their exposure to tiers of supplies that are coming from the region,” he shared. He added that there was another strategy wherein manufacturers are adopting cross-sourcing where they look to supply vehicles or parts from any of their production facilities to any of their target markets. To tackle lead time, for instance, some manufacturers are also adopting a postponement strategy where control units chips are being removed from finished vehicles that are not yet sold and installed in vehicles on order. “We are also seeing a greater willingness of auto makers suppliers, logistics companies and governments to share more data to improve visibility across the supply chain,” he said. He added that companies were also passing on the increase in logistics and transportation costs to customers. Logistics providers, for instance, are including a war surcharge on shipments to Asia, Latin America and Africa among other regions as the cost
40
AUTO COMPONENTS INDIA // JUNE 2022
of manufacturing increases. Adding to it, Valsan explained that there is also greater demand for aftermarket support including connected services. A majority of the fleet managers, dispatchers and truck drivers in the US, China, and Europe already have some level of connected services in their trucks. He cited fleet operators emphasising service level agreements that guarantee product uptime and that OEMs find value in bundling services that can pro-actively support their fleets and their equipment. He moved to the adoption of digitalisation across the organisation wherein logistics and transportation companies are said to be pilot testing technologies like digital twinning to stress-test supply chains and also applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning being put to good use to predict capacity needs, optimise routes and improve last-mile delivery efficiency. He drew attention to more block chain applications coming online to give stakeholders greater visibility and even eliminate intermediaries on fronts like sustainability. Almost all the major logistics companies have actually pledged to achieve carbon neutrality between 2040 and 2050. This directly translates into how they are adopting electrification to transform their fleets so the demand for sustainable and alternate fuel vehicles is higher than ever before now. In the short term, opined Valsan, there was a clear push for OEMs to have in place a portfolio of powertrains to meet the diverse needs across geographies and applications. He gave examples of markets like Asia and Latin America projected to see a phase of strong demand for alternate fuels such as natural gas and flex-fuel vehicles demand. Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) will grow in these regions over the medium term, he stated. In North America and Europe on the other hand, opined Valsan, the regions were witnessing an
appetite for both BEVs and hydrogenpowered vehicles, driven by the cost of ownership, better infrastructure incentives and even disincentives for fossil fuel-based vehicles. “The significant increase in energy costs is also likely to accelerate the demand for electric and hydrogen vehicles across markets,” he added. Citing how major manufacturers around the world including most Indian manufacturers have committed to a road map to shift product portfolios dramatically toward electrification within the next decade. Valsan also gave an example of the transportation sector innovating in line. A testimony to it is the OEMs witnessing a significant number of new entrants in just the last decade, from new products or services to intermediating or even disintermediation in new business models. In comparison, traditional auto makers are mostly self-reliant or partner with peers for developing electric or hydrogen powertrains. He urged them to look at the growing need for collaborating with startups, and technology companies for autonomous vehicles and networks. “We have certainly seen a proliferation of pilots for autonomous vehicle use cases such as automated lastmile delivery services platooning, retrofitting autonomous technologies and also for transfer hubs. Now the pandemic induced growing driver shortage, the introduction of regulations such as hours of service are also driving interest in autonomous trucking and delivery services,” he opined. In conclusion, Valsan stated that companies would actually need to learn to survive and thrive despite the uncertainties as we’ve seen with some practices by leading companies. Despite all of these challenges, a number of these companies are announcing good levels of profit margins, a reflection of the opportunities such times present. ACI WWW.AUTOCOMPONENTSINDIA.COM

Globe Scan it is envisioned. “MAHLE is a strong partner for workshops for all aspects of thermal management. We recommend that our customers build up their skills in this area and support them accordingly,” averred Olaf Henning, Corporate Executive Vice President and General Manager MAHLE Aftermarket. To addressing this emerging market demand, MAHLE through its aftermarket business will offer a growing range of components, and in addition to these also venture into service equipment, training, and digital information solutions. The company owns seven brands which represent innovation and high quality. MAHLE original, knecht, behr, metal leve, izumi, clevite and brain bee are operational. In January 2020, MAHLE Aftermarket acquired the entire shareholding in Behr Hella Service (BHS). This in effect meant that all of BHS
