y regular stroll through social media and curiosity to know what the world is caught up with reaffirmed that #COVID19 is still trending. Creating a tense environment the world over with Coronavirus known to have spread out to unexpected regions and automotive hubs the world over. Just in Time to go to the press and I learnt that more than a dozen countries have recorded their first cases in the past 48 hours even as the industry makes an effort to gauge the impact on the components supply chain in the country. China alone accounts for 27 per cent of India’s automotive component imports. The vehicle demand in the country is projected to decline by 8.3 per cent. Forging industries are no exclusions here. The timing couldn’t have been worse considering the industry is already weighed down by a curtailed production rate due to the market conditions and on account of the impending change over to BSVI emission norms from April 01, 2020, sans any visible pre-buying. BS-IV from the 1st of April 2020. The slowing supply of components manufactured in China is also expected to cause a shortage if the suppliers fail to switch over to meet customer demands from non-China facilities. The news that the OEMs have reduced their production plan for February and March due to the non-receipt of components doesn’t augur well for the suppliers. That the Chinese government has suspended shipments by sea until further notice and is allowing air-only shipments that are not suitable for Auto Components and forging industries add to the woes of the Indian OEMs. It is expected to cause an inventory bottleneck unless domestic suppliers rise to the challenge and plug the holes.

Q. What is Ashok Leyland’s BSVI strategy with the Mid-NOx system? A. The mid-NOx system applies to ICV and above range of vehicles. It is not the strategy for LCVs. The LCV strategy for BSVI we will announce soon. In case of packaging the Mid-NOx system on ICV and heavier CVs, the packaging challenge was reasonable. Q. How different is the iEGR on BSVI CV Mid-NOx system as compared to www.autocomponentsindia.com
the BSIV CVs? A. There’s not much change in the iEGR system; it is the same. Increasing the power and torque by turbocharging, we have been able to control the amount of NOx coming out of the engine. So, essentially one half of the NOx is at the iEGR stage, and the other half is at the SCR stage. The particulate matter is controlled by the DPF. The Mid-NOx could be defined such that the NOx control
happens at the engine level as well as at the exhaust level. Q. How many engines are you migrating to BSVI? A. We are migrating the entire range of engines to BSVI. Q. Was BSVI the prime reason for the new modular architecture? A. The prime reason was the Indian market requirements. It is typically a
Upfront taking modularisation across the 16- to 65-tonne portfolio of ours; across cab options, engine options, gearbox options, etc. Q. When you say that you are migrating all the engines to BSVI, migrating various cabs, where does modularisation fit in? A. With the new modular platform we concentrated primarily on the chassis. We did not modularise the cab. We made sure that there is a common interface between the cab and chassis. This would ideally facilitate the removal of one cab and the installation of another. Rather than modularise the engine, we focused on their interface with the vehicle. Consider for example, that the four and six-cylinder H-Series engines may have common parts, they are not necessarily modular. When either a four or a six-cylinder engine goes on the vehicle, the interface is common. The interface location is the same. For example, the radiator piping location, the turbocharger holes, etc. When it comes to aggregates like the cab or the axles, they have a common interface with the chassis. Modularisation in the form of the new platform is on the chassis side. Q. How do your customers stand to gain from the new modular platform? A. A big gain for the customer would be to get a CV that is customised for their requirements. Consider this: A customer wants a tractor, but with a 400-litre fuel tank; a six-speed or a nine-speed gearbox, and a 230 hp engine. To design such a vehicle, it would take months. With the new modular platform all that is needed is to remove the 300-litre tank and plonk a 400-litre tank in its place. Remove the nine-speed transmission for a six-speed transmission though in the interest of performance a nine-speed transmission will work better. What modularisation does is make it easy to customise a vehicle. It builds on the premise that the customer can actually configure a vehicle on a mobile device or a laptop. He could almost make it to order.
Q. Are you hinting at bringing vehicle configuration ability to customers the way Scania in Europe has been offering? A. Yes, we are starting in that direction though not with the level of configuration-ability Scania offers. If the trend catches on, we will have the flexibility to customise every feature on the truck. How we apply it will be important. It will most likely be step-bystep. Applied, the offering of 200 choices to configure the vehicle could lead to the buyer getting confused. We would therefore ideally want to limit it to cab options, powertrain options, and a few others. Q. Was it not tough to develop a new modular platform and migrate to BSVI at the same time? A. It may seem tough, but we felt that it was actually an easier way to get there. I will give you an example. Consider the designing of three exhaust systems for three platforms as part of their migration to BSVI. Add variants to the equation, and the number of exhaust systems would go up to 15. This would have meant dealing with 15 different back pressures. With the new modular platform there is one exhaust system to deal with. At a higher level, the development of the modular platform and to migrate to BSVI may look complicated, at the packaging level the exhaust system has been made much easier. We believe, that the move to higher modularity will ensure less complexity for us. Q. Did the move to BSVI give you an opportunity to innovate at the software level as well? A. A lot of attention has been on economy and performance, but also on agnostics. A lot of work has gone in detecting any failure happening in the system. It will prove to be of much benefit to the customer. Q. How is Ashok Leyland looking at addressing operators’ query regarding the TCO of BSVI CVs since fuel and AdBlue are involved? A. The cost of fuel and AdBlue may not www.autocomponentsindia.com

low volume, high mix market. There are a lot of variants thus. The variants spring different loading spans, body types, fuel tank capacity, hp and more. Each customer wants a different setup that suits his needs most. Considering the variety of requirements, every time there is a need to change something, driven by regulation or by some other reason, it becomes very complex. Consider Ashok Leyland having three platforms – the G45 platform, the M-truck platform and the U-truck platform, and changing them to BSVI would mean a big change since the CVs based on these span range from 16- to 65-tonnes. Migrating three platforms to BSVI would call for a certain varieties of exhaust systems, certain varieties of interface parts and more. To deal with such challenges we decided to develop a new modular platform that would help us to maintain the same variety, and at the same time take all the plus-points of these system and come up with a common platform. This would also provide us an opportunity to eliminate the minuspoints of these systems. The idea was not to standardise, but to have a common interface. Modularisation is sometimes mistaken with standardisation, which is not the case. Standardisation will add to cost. What modularisation does, is to ascertain the fitment of a certain component at a certain location. Consider the example of a fuel tank. Modularisation would ensure that it fits at a certain place. Depending on the market requirement, it could be made up of metal or plastic. It would relate to the affordibility of the segment. Consider another example of spring stiffness. The spring would have a certain span, and that span will remain the same. What will vary depending on the requirement is the degree of stiffness. Upon identification of a higher volume segment, it would be worth designing a customised spring. It would however have the same interface as the other springs. Modularisation would thus allow mixing and matching through higher availability of common interfaces. This would make it much easier to design new variants. We are

Upfront be in our control, the amount of work that has gone into the development of the new modular platform, operators will derive benefits from higher tyre life, higher clutch life, etc., as compared to the existing platforms. This will lead to a different level of TCO gain. From the fuel economy point of view, Ashok Leyland is trying to be better than or equal to BSIV. From the TCO perspective therefore, our target has been to be very competitive in terms of BSIV.
AUTO COMPONENTS INDIA n MARCH 2020
Q. How did you leverage the experience and knowledge of associates like Albonair to develop BSVI CVs? A. At Ashok Leyland we spent a lot of time looking for the right technologies. We gained from the experience of Albonair. We combined it with the proven iEGR of ours. We have a reason to believe that we have a fairly competitive cost. However, unless we see where the competition really is, it will be difficult to know where we really are. What we have done at Ashok Leyland, is to be ready for any further cost reductions that may be required.
30
Q. What about the real-world driving emissions? A. The real-world driving emissions are going to be measured from April 2020. They will not be subject to accountability as of now. We at Ashok Leyland have already finished that. We have homologated the entire range of engines. We have recorded the real-world driving emission values and they are well within the limit. The real-world driving emission regulation is expected to come into force by 2023. Our Mid-NOx system has made it easier for us to meet the real-world emission requirements. We do not see any hardware change for real-world emission regulations expected in 2023. There will be calibration changes. From the hardware side, we are ready. As required, we will do the calibration for real-world driving emissions between 2020 and 2023. Q. Which have been the more www.autocomponentsindia.com

At a higher level, the development of the modular platform and to migrate to BSVI may look complicated, at the packaging level the exhaust system has been made much easier.
challenging to migrate to BSVI, the lighter CVs or heavier CVs? A. The lighter CVs have been the more challenging to migrate to BSVI. It is because of the cost and space. Q. Would alternate fuels gain prominence given the cost escalation BSVI diesel CVs will witness? A. My personal opinion is, that better availability of fuel will accelerate a shift to alternate fuels. The BSVI migration cost will push CNG volumes. Long-haul and dedicated corridors will start looking at LNG. We are also prepared for the shift. Q. What about the shift of buses to BSVI? Will the strategy differ from that of the trucks? A. The BSVI strategy for buses will be similar. Since the nature of their application differs from trucks, their calibration and tweaking will be different. The base technology for BSVI buses and trucks will be similar. We will treat the power levels depending on the application of the buses. In the case of BSVI, we may have turned to the new modular platform in trucks, in the case of buses we are offering an entire range of fullybuilt buses. From ICV to MDV buses. It would have different door options; will be available with AC or without AC, and a host of other features to match the requirements of the operator. A lot of
effort has gone into making fully-built buses available. Though we will continue to offer drive-away chassis, we are expecting customers to shift to fully-built buses sooner than later. Q. How have you dealt with the challenge of DPF regeneration for urban CVs given the driving cycle and situations in India? A. It is a challenge that we are working on. We are looking at minimising what is termed as ‘stationary’ regeneration. We are working on it and hopefully have a technology ready by the time of the launch. We are looking at offering a more robust solution than the competition. There is a certain perception about regeneration. Passive regeneration will happen most of the time typically. There will some active regeneration as well, and which should be safe. ‘Stationary’ regeneration is the last, and the most extreme case, which we are looking at minimising. BSVI will entail a big culture change. Q. What amount of testing and validation was carried out to fine-tune BSVI technology? A. We did more than 30,000 hours of engine testing. On vehicles, it was about six-million kilometers covered on the ICVs and M&HCVs. The buses were subjected to about nine-million kilometers of testing. Q. What changes did you have to carry out at the manufacturing level to accommodate BSVI technology and the new modular platform? A. To accommodate modularity we have had to do quite a bit of change at all our lines. Q. Did it call for a complete ramp down and ramp up? A. The good part of the slowdown is that we could get the time to execute the changes. We do not have control on that (slowdown) part, but it made it easier for us to make the transition. You could now look forward to a more agile Ashok Leyland from the product perspective. ACI

multidisciplinary field, Mechatronics combines multiple branches of engineering. Referring to the intersection of mechanics, electronics, and computing over the erstwhile approach of looking at each domain separately, the automotive industry has deemed it as the foundation for its expected growth. The industry it seems has mastered the art of creating simpler and smarter systems. Considered to be essential for the expected growth in automation and manufacturing in the automotive sector, Mechatronics broadly encompasses the sub-verticals of mechanics and electronics. Here electronics refers to the hardware and software and the domain of mechanics pertains to the disciplines of mechanical engineering and hydraulics. The objective is to use the synergistic optimisation

to project more functions at a lower cost, less weight and installation space, and in turn, offer better quality.
l Diverse Applications
Known to play a significant role throughout the vehicle architecture as per the Bosch Professional Automotive Information compilation, Mechatronics plays a key hand across engine management systems and injection systems especially in case of diesel engines. It further extends to the transmission control systems, electrical and thermal energy management systems, through to a wide variety of brake and driving dynamics systems. systems aren’t excluded either. With mechanical systems replaced by ‘X-by-Wire’ systems, for instance, the ‘Brake-by-wire’ is known to replace the hydromechanical connection between the brake pedal and the wheel brake. It works such that the sensors record the driver’s braking request and transmit the request to an electronic control unit. Using actuators, the unit generates the required braking effort at the wheels through the actuators. In case of the of brake stabilisation intervention by the Electronic Stability Program (ESP), the SBC electronic control unit calculates the required brake pressure setpoints at the individual wheels. Here brake pressure to each wheel is regulated by wheelpressure modulators. Speaking of the component level application, Common-rail injectors are testimony to an extremely high degree of functionality and utility levels explains the guide. It is attained by controlling electrodynamics, mechanical engineering and fluid dynamics to which these components are subjected. Brushless, electronically commutated DC motors (BLDC’s) are another example of how mechatronics led to erstwhile DC motors with brushes being replaced with a simpler design and led to separate parts being reduced by 60 per cent.

Shorter development times and the growing complexity of automotive systems has led to a design and development dilemma. Simulation models are said to be required to review key design decisions, especially in the early development stages lacking a prototype. The design approaches of mechatronic systems should strive toward continuity. It must ensure a topdown system simulation with the objective of overall optimisation, through to finite element simulation to achieve a detailed understanding. Sony Vision-S Prototype EV Starting with a vision to make “something that moves”, Sony’s competitiveness is said to have been bolstered by their technological prowess in both machinery and electronics also called mechatronics. Sony’s advance into the auto business is being looked upon as proof of the age of electric vehicles allowing an opportunity for new entrants with or without an automotive background to build cars as long as the basic electronic parts and components can be procured. It is akin to the era of LCDs replacing cathode-ray tubes. No wonder the landscape is expected to be drastically different from the days of internal combustion engines.

The proportion of electronically controlled systems in vehicles is known to have increased on a continual basis. It is predicted that an estimated 90 per cent of innovations in vehicles would constitute of electronics and microprocessor-controlled systems. For new systems and functions, manufacturers are said to be striving to have onboard minimum additional resources. Engineers, however, are faced with a new challenge in the form of networked thinking and subsystem integration. It is to do with the subsystem assemblies originating from different development partner suppliers Complaints due to electrical or electronic failures are said to be a

Hardware architecture, Software architecture, Network architecture in the area of realisation technologies, Cost and resource consumption in the area of economic analysis and in the area of social requirements where aspects such as safety, availability and legal conformity are of prime consideration.
l Automotive Mission Plan 2026
In accordance with the Automotive Mission Plan 2026 (AMP 2026), a technology acquisition fund with government support could be set up to finance the Indian Automotive industry’s attempts to acquire cutting edge technology with focus areas like light-weighting, engine, powertrain and auto electronics. Technology transfers, joint ventures, acquisitions, and buyouts are expected to fructify and expected to be a big step for
the Indian automotive industry particularly the auto component industry to leapfrog and acquire global best capabilities for research, design, engineering and testing. branding. Posing a great challenge, the import intensity of automobiles is likely to increase in the coming years on account of the increasing use of electronics and the enhancement in the value of design and engineering in the making of vehicles and components. India is known to be deficient in skills and capabilities in both these areas, namely autoelectronics and design/engineering. AMP 2026 seeks to increase the share of local manufacture of vehicles and components, in particular, automotive electronics, lightweighting materials, moulds and dies, and machinery, all in a bid to save the country substantial foreign exchange and boost the efforts in line with the ‘Make in India’ programme too. In a year where motor shows and awards are trending for being shelved owing to “depleting footfalls” as per industry reports, the fourth edition reflected on its sustained growth. It held the industry in high esteem and witnessed wholehearted participation as a testimony to the awards featuring prominently on the industry calendar. It also hinted at the awards continually evolving and carving out a niche identity in a competitive and crowded space. Drawing its strength from a strong

pillar of industry goodwill earned over the years of its existence, it is fair to say that the intellectual property of Next Gen Publishing Pvt. Ltd., returned in a stronger avatar this year. Among stakeholders of the components and the aliied industry, at the awards, new market entrants with disruptive technologies stood out, in particular. In his Welcome address, Hoshang S. Billimoria, Founder & Mentor, Next Gen Publishing Pvt. Ltd., expressed hope of the industry witnessing a turning point in the near future. Expressed Billimoria, “I’d like to give my congratulations to all the winners at the fourth edition of the Auto Components India Awards 2020 beforehand.” “2019 was a very testing time for the automotive industry as also for the auto components industry. The industry reacted to the slowdown with a great degree of resilience,” he stated. Billimoria opined that in terms of Government help little was achieved by the industry despite seeking intervention proactively. The first glimpse of the scrappage policy which is expected to help the industry in due course of time does not inspire much confidence, he opined. Referring to the coronavirus outbreak, he acknowledged that the industry was yet to gauge the impact on the auto industry as a whole especially the auto components industry when it comes to the supply chain. “In such challenging times, it is hard to forecast the state of the immediate few months as anywhere close to being rosy. I’ll take a chance and say the second half of 2020 should hopefully be a turning point,” he concluded on an optimistic note. Billimoria went on to thank the sponsors starting with Force Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra. He
Ashish Bhatia, Executive Editor, Auto Components India began his address by humbly thanking the stakeholders of the components and allied industry for giving Next Gen Publishing Pvt. The Maverick Jurors
You will agree that a jury process is as good as its jurors. The maverick jurors of Auto Components India Awards 2020 constituted of a fine blend of old hands and new this year. Continuing from the previous editions were old hands and technical pillars in VG Ramakrishnan, Managing Partner & MD, Avanteum Advisors, Kaushik Madhavan, Vice President - Mobility, Frost & Sullivan and Bhushan Mhapralkar, Editor, Commercial Vehicle magazine joined by Ashish Bhatia, Executive Editor, Auto Components India. In a shift of venue to Mumbai from Chennai erstwhile, the jurors began with a blank slate, months ahead of the jury meet, case in point the uber low industry sentiment; the fate of the awards dependent on the nature of nominations that would populate the universe of entries. Nomination forms were first published in the December 2019 Issue of Auto Components India followed by rigorous follow
ups. The inflow of entries did not disappoint albeit surprised the jury. Companies were found to nominate themselves in far fewer categories than proposed to them despite eligibility in a greater number of categories. With such a decisive approach, it meant that certain categories did not hold good. They turned obsolete owing to the prerequisite of a minimum of two company nominations required to hold the category good. The challenge to strike a fine balance between the existing pool of nominees and the relatively new entrants in participation was accepted by the jury and well-executed in hindsight. A few companies despite having the potential to be strong frontrunners lost out purely for not complying with the deadline of January 21, 2020, set for submissions. The camaraderie among the jurors at the start of the jury meets ensured a smooth process overall albeit not without each juror having to put up a strong case for their proposed
winning component/company. The shortlisted companies that adhered to the nomination process by presenting a comprehensive data compilation to stake their claim were judged on a level playing field taking cognisance of key metrics like technological excellence, business excellence and sustainability excellence. Scores gathered across these heads made for a grand total in each juror’s dossier. Post the jury scores were collated, the company with the highest cumulative score was adjudged as the winner in each of the respective categories. The jury also unanimously agreed to dive deeper into the vendor level efficiencies and overall management process in a bid to make the awards a matter of pride for participating companies for the forthcoming edition. The objective being to acknowledge the product, process and the people involved in the development cycles.

n auto component is at the heart of any vehicle and is what an auto component manufacturer strives to excel at all round the year. The coveted award for that one component which stood out in 2019 creating a disruption of sorts in its segment went to the company that rose to address the challenge of range anxiety and heavyweight of CNG cylinders coupled with a lack of CNG refuelling infrastructure on highways witnessed in the bus market. Committing to green energy fuel solutions globally, the winning company over the last few years put in sustained efforts to create a market for a longdistance CNG bus and first attracted eyeballs at Busworld India 2018. The company successfully overcame a steep challenge to convince the entire Indian ecosystem of OEM’s, statutory agencies, fleet owners, government officials, gas companies that a 70 per cent lighter composite cylinder was safer and more efficient to store CNG. It demonstrated a system design to be both cost-effective and range efficient to give a bus the firepower to travel over 800 kms. With local assistance from Advantek Fuel Systems, Agility India designed the first CNG Bus system in India, tested and validated by ARAI, that stored double the amount of CNG in a current bus system at half the weight (shaving of over 600 kgs). www.autocomponentsindia.com
